Abstract:A major fraction of secondary energy consumed for our daily activities, such as electricity and low-grade heat sources, emanates from the conversion of fossil fuels in power plants. In the seawater desalination processes, the energy efficiency is usually expressed in kWh electricity or kWh of low-grade heat per unit volume of water produced. Although kWh energy unit provides a quantitative measure of input energy, it has subtly omitted the embedded quality of supplied energy to desalination plants. In assuming the equivalency across dissimilar energy forms, it results in a thermodynamic misconception that has eluded the desalination industry hitherto, i.e., not all units of derived energy are created equal. An incomplete energy efficacy approach may result in the inferior selection of desalination processes to be deployed;—a phenomenon observed in the trend of installed desalination capacity globally. Operating a less efficient desalination plant over its lifespan would create much economic burdens including a higher unit cost of water, higher CO2 emissions and greater brine discharge to the environment. This book chapter clarifies the key concept and a thermodynamic framework to rectify the misconception in energy consumption, permitting energy planners and designers to optimize deployment of future desalination plants for energy sustainability. We have derived conversion factors to convert assorted derived energies into standard primary energy for fair comparison.
A Theoretical Study of an Innovative Ejector Enhanced Vapor Compression Heat Pump Cycle for Water Heating Application

Abstract:This study presents a novel vapor compression heat pump cycle in which an ejector associated with a subcooler is applied to enhance the heating performance for air-source heat pump water heater application. The heating coefficient of performance (COPh) and heating capacity of the novel cycle using the non-azeotropic mixture refrigerant R417A are theoretically investigated, for the ranges of evaporating temperature (−15 to 10°C) and condensing temperature (55–60°C). The theoretical results show that the COPh and volumetric heating capacity of the novel cycle are better than that of the conventional heat pump cycle. It is found that for the operating conditions considered, the maximum COPh and volumetric heating capacity can be improved by up to 1.62–6.92% and 15.20–37.32% over the conventional heat pump cycle, respectively. The performance characteristics of the novel cycle show its promise in air-source heat pump water heater applications.

Abstract:Low grade thermal energy, such as solar energy, waste heat from industries and geothermal energy, extensively exists in the environment. Heat pumps (HPs), such as vapor compression, absorption, and adsorption HPs, can upgrade the low temperature thermal energy into high temperature heat for central heating or industrial manufacturing processes. The selection of suitable cycles and refrigerants is important for getting good performance of HPs. In this paper typical refrigerants of vapor compression, absorption, and adsorption HPs, such as R152a, R1233zd (E), R1234yf, R1234ze, R134a, R245fa, R717, R718, and R744, methanol, etc., are analyzed. Various HPs and refrigerant options are compared, and different factors, which are low grade heat sources, heat sinks, and temperature lifts, are analyzed. A broad-spectrum diagram of HP applications is provided for different working modes.

Abstract:Ocean thermal energy (OTE) is a kind of ocean energy with a large development potential. In this paper, a new method making direct use of OTE for desalination was put forward and its principles and working process were also expounded. Firstly, this paper established the relevant process model of OTE desalination system. The system used OTE to maintain a vacuum and seawater could be evaporated at a much lower temperature and with less energy than conventional technique. Secondly, a parametric study was carried out quantitatively. It analyzed the influence on the system’s operation of three main parameters (temperature, mass flow and energy consumption). Finally, this paper improved the energy efficiency of the system. The lowest unit energy consumption could reach 4.54kWh/m3. The results indicate the feasibility of OTE used for desalination and its competitiveness against common solar desalination method.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to analyze the feasibility of the single-effect H2O/LiBr absorption heat pump cycle to produce combined heating and cooling. To achieve this, first, the main changes that the absorption cycle requires are described in comparison with the conventional single-effect absorption chiller. Then, the cycle’s operational limits in terms of temperature lift and LiBr crystallization are evaluated. In this sense, driving heat temperatures required for these applications range from 85 °C to 120 °C. The energy and exergy performance (in terms of cooling and heating capacities, cooling and heating coefficient of performance, and exergy coefficient of performance) of the cycle is theoretically studied for five different types of applications that require simultaneous heating and cooling: building air conditioning, a 4th generation district heating and cooling network, a sports center with an indoor swimming pool, a hybrid air conditioning system with an absorption heat pump and a desiccant evaporative cooling system, and simultaneous cooling and water purification application for coastal areas. The system performance in terms of the cooling coefficient of performance varies in the range of 0.812–0.842, in terms of heating coefficient of performance from 0.58 to 1.842, and in terms of exergy coefficient of performance from 0.451 to 0.667. The application with the highest exergy coefficient of performance is the 4th generation district heating and cooling network.

Abstract:One of the most promising methods of water purification and distillation is the evaporation method using heat pump energy transformers. The article describes the developed scheme of a heat pump for vacuum distillation, which operates under atmospheric pressure with water at saturation temperatures in the range of 20–40 °C. Results of experimental studies on a specially made installation are presented. The proposed technical solution using a two-lobe Roots type vacuum compressor pump as the basic means of increasing the pressure is shown to be viable. A mathematical description of the unsteady heat and mass exchange process of a single-stage distillation unit with mechanical vapor compression was verified. An equation for calculating the heat transfer coefficient for evaporation of water under vacuum in a free volume on vertical pipes is proposed. Data on the performance and power consumption of the installation were obtained.

Abstract:The application of renewable sources, such as solar energy, and the use of ecological refrigerants in refrigeration and heating systems contribute to more sustainable development and the reduction of global warming. With this perspective, the main objective of this work is to develop, validate and apply a mathematical model based on the energetic, exergetic, environmental, and economic analysis of a Direct-Expansion Solar-Assisted Heat Pump for the production of Domestic Hot Water operating with R290. Environmental analysis is based on Total Equivalent Warming Impact and economic analysis is based on payback. The proposed mathematical model was validated on an experimental bench with R290 through infrared thermography applied to evaluate the temperature distribution in the evaporator. The influence of environmental parameters on the system with R290 is investigated through simulations. Among the environmental parameters investigated, solar irradiance was the parameter that most contributed to the increase in energy (69.3 %) and exergy efficiency (8.72 %). In addition, the increase in ambient temperature contributed more to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (88.6 %) but promoted the longest payback time for the system. Finally, in the tests performed, heating the water at a lower temperature (45 °C) compared to the higher temperature (65 °C) increased energy (25.0 %) and exergy efficiency (2.86 %), contributed more to the reduction of emissions, but increased the payback time.

Abstract:Apart from absorption cooling, absorption heating technologies are also widely used for waste heat recovery and renewable energy utilization. Waste heat recovery in district heating systems covers cogeneration heat recovery and flue gas heat recovery, which can improve the overall energy efficiency by 5-30%. Meanwhile, in industrial processes (drying, evaporation, and distillation), technologies such as closed/open absorption heat pump (AHP/OAHP), closed/open absorption heat transformers (AHT/OAHT) and absorption-compression heat pump (ACHP) are employed with various stages, effects and working fluids, to meet temperature requirements of 50-160 degrees C. To evaluate the efficiency of absorption heating technologies in the renewable energy field, solar heating performances between a solar air source absorption heating pump (ASAHP) and a conventional solar collector heating, are compared within ASAHP's applicability domain (based on the temperature and radiation ranges). In addition, different geothermal heat pump systems are introduced for cascade utilization of geothermal energy. The absorption-compression heat pump (ACHP) is selected as a promising candidate, and detailed comparisons of this technology working with various novel NH3/IL working fluids are presented. This chapter also provides many advanced prospective for a more reasonable utilization of waste heat and renewable energy sources.

Abstract:The electrification of process industries is one of the main challenges when building a low-carbon society since they consume huge amounts of fossil fuels, generating different emissions. Heat pumps are some of the key players in the industrial sector of the carbon-neutral market. This study proposes an approach to improve the economic feasibility of heat pumps within process plants. Initial energy targeting with grand composite curves was used and supplemented with the detailed design of an evaporator and a compressor for different condensation and evaporation pressures. The trade-off between the capital cost of the heat pump and the electricity cost was investigated, and optimal configurations were selected. This case study investigates the gas fractioning unit of a polymer plant, where three heat pumps are integrated into distillation columns. The results demonstrate that the heat recovery is 174 MW and requires an additional 37.9 MW of electricity to reduce the hot utility by 212 MW. The selection of the evaporation and condensation pressures of heat pumps allows 21.5 M EUR/y to be saved for 7 years of plant operation. The emission-saving potential is estimated at 1.89 ktCO2/y.

Abstract:Based on established and proven technology of water/lithium bromide absorption chillers, customized single-stage and double-stage heat pump cycles adapted to specific applications can be designed, especially aiming at medium and large heating capacities of 500kW and above. These heat pumps can either be fossil fired or driven by heat from combined heating and power (CHP) systems or other sources. In terms of primary energy saving, in many cases this is the most suitable technology to utilize the available heat sources. This is demonstrated by three examples of current installations in southern Germany. An analysis of the energetic performance and of the economic situation has been performed.At a municipal composting plant, waste heat is generated at a temperature level of about 40–50°C. Previously, this waste heat had to be rejected to the ambient by means of a cooling tower. A direct-fired single-stage absorption heat pump has been installed which lifts the waste heat to a temperature level of 82°C enabling its utilization in the local heating network of a commercial area.At a spa with various swimming pools located next to a thermal spring, a CHP engine plant is installed. The reject heat of the gas engine drives a novel two-stage absorption heat pump that utilizes the spring water as renewable heat source to provide heating of the pools and the building.In Munich, a solar-assisted local district heating system is installed in a new housing development area with about 300 accommodation units. At this site, a seasonal hot water storage for the solar system of about 5700m3 is erected. At the beginning of the heating season, it serves the local heating network directly and afterwards – at a lower temperature level – it is utilized as heat source for an absorption heat pump that is driven by the municipal district heating network. By that concept two effects are accomplished: the available temperature change of the hot water storage is increased and the mean temperature of the solar system is decreased. Thus an increase of the annual efficiency of the solar collectors and finally an increase of the annual solar gain is accomplished.

Abstract:Absorption heating has attracted increased attention due to its irreplaceable advantages in energy conservation and pollution reduction in heating and domestic hot water supplies. This paper presents the classifications and principles of different absorption heating cycles and comprehensively reviews their statuses and development in different application fields. Civil applications include direct-fired chiller/heaters, fuel-driven absorption heat pump water heaters, the latent heat recovery of vapors, hybrid compression–absorption heating, solar-assisted absorption heat pumps, absorption-based district heating, thermal energy storage and transportation, ground source absorption heat pumps and thermal imbalances in cold regions. Industrial applications include absorption-assisted drying, absorption-assisted evaporation, absorption-assisted distillation, and absorption-assisted waste heat recovery. Additionally, several rural application concepts are also provided. Based on the reviews, essential summaries and suggestions are presented, which are expected to extend the absorption heating technologies for additional contributions to energy conservation and environmental protection.

Abstract:Heat pump systems can simultaneously produce cooling energy for space cooling in hotels, office and residential buildings and heat for desalination using membrane distillation (MD). The MD technique uses a heat input at a temperature compatible with the levels of heat pump condensers (<60 °C). A heat pump prototype coupled with an air-gap membrane distillation unit was constructed and tested. This paper presents the experimental study on a lab-scale prototype and details the two operating modes "continuous" and "controlled" simulating an air conditioning system and a food storage, respectively. The experimental results enable to analyze the performance of the prototype and the physical phenomena involved. Finally, the study shows that this system could be a promising solution to help supplying freshwater to people in hot regions of the world.

Abstract:This study presents the energetic and energetic analysis of the heat pump cycle, used for heating residential spaces. The heat pump is of the air-water type, taking heat at the level of the evaporator from the environment. The working fluids used are: R1233zd(E), R1234ze, R152a, R1234yf. Exergy analysis is used as a research tool. Based on the exergy analysis, the identification of malfunctions at the level of each device and process can be easily achieved. The study shows that the working fluid R1233zd(E) presents the highest coefficient of performance and the highest exergetic efficiency.

Abstract:Despite being efficient water heating technologies, conventional absorption heat pumps can hardly produce hot water with temperature over 90°C, and compressor-based systems have low primary energy efficiency. In order to fill this temperature gap and improve the energy efficiency, a gas-fired ammonia-water absorption heat pump with intermediate process is proposed to supply hot water with large temperature lift for residential and industrial applications. In addition to the ambient heat utilized in the evaporator, the proposed system recovers the exhaust heat in the intermediate evaporator, and the evaporated ammonia vapor is absorbed in the intermediate absorber to further heat the water, which is initially preheated in sequence in the condenser, rectifier and absorber. Simulation results indicate that at the ambient temperature of 20°C, the proposed system can produce hot water with temperature over 95°C and the obtained temperature lift is 75°C, while the primary energy efficiency is 1.38. Obtained results indicate that the intermediate pressure of 0.7 MPa is the optimum pressure from both thermodynamic and economic aspects. Moreover, it is found that the energy saving potential of the proposed system is in range of 36.7% to 43.5%, when the comparison is made with conventional gas-fired boilers, and the average payback period is 2.5 years in three typical cities of south China. It is concluded that the proposed system is an efficient scheme for high-temperature water heating with large temperature lift. This is especially pronounced in warm regions with average ambient temperature over 5°C.

Abstract:This study presents a theoretical thermoeconomic performance assessment of a novel solar-powered high-temperature heat pump (HTHP)/adsorption cogeneration system for simultaneous electricity production and cooling. Photovoltaic/thermal (PVT) solar collectors are used to capture solar thermal energy and generate electricity that is partially used to drive the HTHP compressor. The HTHP is mainly used to absorb the captured solar thermal energy through its evaporator coils to keep the collectors at lower operating temperatures for better electricity generation. Then through the HTHP compressor, the thermal energy is amplified to produce higher-temperature hot water to drive the adsorption chiller for improved cooling production. The performance of the proposed system (PVT-HTHP) is compared to the performance of the PVT-only, and evacuated tube collectors (ETC-only) powered adsorption chiller for the same solar collector area. A parametric study with different operating HTHP conditions has been performed to determine the optimal operational scenario for the proposed system. A low-GWP refrigerant R1234ze(Z) is considered for the HTHP and compared against the conventional high-GWP R134a option. A complete dynamic mathematical model is developed for the studied systems and solved by MATLAB software. Under the summer conditions of Alexandria, Egypt, the average cooling capacity is improved substantially from 3.91 kW for PVT-only to 8.6 kW for ETC-only and 10.21 kW for proposed PVT-HTHP configuration with R1234ze(Z) and operating evaporator and condenser temperatures of 35 °C and 90 °C, respectively. The best-performing configuration from the energy efficiency perspective is the proposed PVT-HTHP with R1234ze(Z) refrigerant at a value of 46.8% when the operating HTHP evaporator and condenser saturation temperatures of 35 °C and 80 °C, respectively. The economic assessment of the proposed PVT-HTHP system proves that the system can be applied feasibly with a payback period ( PBP ) of 7.5 years.

Abstract:A suitable heat pump coupled to low-temperature sources can upgrade heat to higher temperatures. This is commonly achieved by consumption of electricity (vapor compression heat pumps) or by thermal means (vapor absorption and solidndashgas sorption heat pumps). However, vapor compression and vapor absorption heat pumps are frequent, intensive research on chemical heat pumps conducted in recent years. Since no mechanical compression is required for attaining a considerable temperature rise, chemical heat pumps expected to take an important role in the utilization of solar, geothermal or waste-heats. They do not require electric power and generally have higher thermodynamic efficiencies than mechanical heat pumps. This paper present a detailed simulation of Isopropanol-Acetone-Hydrogen Chemical Heat Pump. The CHP system was simulated using ASPEN PLUS and further analyzed and optimized for the energy efficiency. Under the optimum distillation column condition (Table 2), the COP and exergy efficiency was considered0.25 and 0.33 respectively, which proved that simulation results are greater than the reported results. The developed model can be invoked as a guide for understanding the reaction kinetics for CSTR reactor.
The Energy Efficiency and Economic Feasibility Analysis of the Distributed Absorption Cooling Combined with District Heating System

Abstract:The distributed absorption cooling based district heating system was investigated in order to utilizing the reject heat from the combined heat and power (CHP) plant in summer.Compared with the electric compressor cooling, the energy efficient and cost-effectiveness of the distributed absorption cooling were furthermore analyzed by the Fuel Energy Saving Ratio (FESR) method. The sensitivity of some variables, such as the average electric efficiency, heating and electric generation efficiency of the CHP system, and the coefficient of performance (COP) of the chiller, were analyzed. The marginal heating price of the distributed absorption cooling can be obtained. According to the evaluation results, the applicability of the distributed cooling with district heating system is limited by the lower energy efficiency and economical benefits. The approaches to increase the energy efficiency were suggested in this paper. The improved distributed absorption cooling combined with liquid desiccant dehumidification which has higher heating utilization efficiency was put forward and analyzed, and the energy efficiency evaluation results showed that the improved distributed cooling has higher energy efficiency and economical benefits, and great applicability.

Abstract:The article presents the results of thermodynamic analysis of the theoretical model of the heat pump system of ventilation, air conditioning and dehumidification of the production room with variable values of internal moisture and heat generation during the transition and warm seasons. The influence of exhaust air energy recovery on the system efficiency is established and evaluated. As a prototype was adopted blacksmith shop, where it is necessary to maintain technological conditions (temperature and relative humidity). Calculations were performed using the method of successive approximations to estimate the air parameters at the nodal points of the system. This established the theoretical refrigeration efficiency of this system and showed the benefits of energy recovery to reduce energy consumption for the system. This model can be used for the design of air handling units with a set heat pump circuit.
