Abstract:Conventional wastewater treatment systems generally require multiple steps and complex procedures to remove aqueous pollutants and oil contaminants from polluted water. Herein, we fabricate an underwater superoleophobic membrane by cross-linking konjac glucomannan on pristine fabrics, demonstrating that the concept of oil water separation and the principle of aqueous pollutant removal can be integrated. Such biopolymer-modified fabric not only separates oil water mixtures with high efficiency (up to 99.9%), but also exhibits the intriguing characteristic of removing water-soluble pollutants (including polyaromatic dyes and heavy metal ions). As a proof of concept, the synthetic wastewater purified with biopolymer membranes was used to cultivate and irrigate pinto beans, causing I KGMF after use no observable deleterious effect on seed germination and growth. These results further confirm the biocompatibility and effectiveness of biopolymer membranes, offering an encouraging solution to challenges including wastewater treatment and cleanup of oil spills.
Effective and low fouling oil/water separation by a novel hollow fiber membrane with both hydrophilic and oleophobic surface properties

Abstract:Membrane filtration for oil/water separation has the potential to provide a simple system with high separation efficiency for oily wastewater treatment. However, conventional membranes are usually subject to severe oil fouling, which has greatly limited the application of membrane technology in oily wastewater management so far. In this study, a novel hollow fiber membrane showing both hydrophilic and oleophobic surface properties was prepared and tested for its oil/water separation performance. The hollow fiber membrane was prepared from polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as the base material and a modified PVDF copolymer with hydrophilic and oleophobic segments as the additive (denoted as AP). The developed hollow fiber membrane was packed into membrane modules for the treatment of artificial oily wastewater samples prepared from hexadecane or crude oil emulsions and real oily wastewater samples collected from a palm oil mill in Malaysia. The experimental results indicate that, as compared to the control PVDF membrane or a modified PVDF membrane with hydrophilic surface property, the developed novel hollow fiber membrane exhibited excellent performances: with much higher water flux, less flux decay during oily wastewater filtration, and significantly higher or almost complete flux recovery from a simple physical cleaning (e.g., water flushing or backwashing) after a filtration run, while achieved the same or usually higher oil removal efficiency. Since the hollow fiber membrane can be easily scaled up to the full module for practical use, there is a great prospect for the developed novel hollow fiber membrane to be used as an effective method for oily wastewater treatment.
Efficient Oil/Water Separation Membrane Derived from Super-Flexible and Superhydrophilic Core–Shell Organic/Inorganic Nanofibrous Architectures

Abstract:To address the worldwide oil and water separation issue, a novel approach was inspired by natural phenomena to synthesize superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic organic/inorganic nanofibrous membranes via a scale up fabrication approach. The synthesized membranes possess a delicate organic core of PVDF-HFP and an inorganic shell of a CuO nanosheet structure, which endows super-flexible properties owing to the merits of PVDF-HFP backbones, and superhydrophilic functions contributed by the extremely rough surface of a CuO nanosheet anchored on flexible PVDF-HFP. Such an organic core and inorganic shell architecture not only functionalizes membrane performance in terms of antifouling, high flux, and low energy consumption, but also extends the lifespan by enhancing its mechanical strength and alkaline resistance to broaden its applicability. The resultant membrane exhibits good oil/water separation efficiency higher than 99.7%, as well as excellent anti-fouling properties for various oil/water mixtures. Considering the intrinsic structural innovation and its integrated advantages, this core–shell nanofibrous membrane is believed to be promising for oil/water separation, and this facile approach is also easy for scaled up manufacturing of functional organic/inorganic nanofibrous membranes with insightful benefits for industrial wastewater treatment, sensors, energy production, and many other related areas.

Abstract:Membranes have been widely used in oil/water separation due to their high efficiency, convenient operation and low cost. However, poor fluidity of viscous oil and membrane fouling remain challenges for efficient oil/water separation using membranes. This study proposes a “two-in-one” design strategy that integrates photothermal properties and liquid-filled slippery surface into a porous membrane, aiming to address these issues. The photothermal responsive liquid-filled membrane is prepared by sequentially depositing silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs), hydrophobic modification with octadecanethiol (ODT), and filling with castor oil, on the polyethersulfone (PES) porous membrane. Under irradiation, the photothermal effect of the Ag NPs layer causes a surface temperature rise, leading to more slippery surface formed by the filled oil layer that is stably locked in the rough nanostructured underlayer; in oil/water separation, the membrane shows significantly improved oil flux, separation efficiency and fouling resistance due to the decreased oil viscosity and the excellent water repellency of the slippery liquid layer. After 10 cycles, the separation efficiency remains above 93.0%. The membrane also has perfect photothermal antibacterial and anti-biological adhesion properties. This multifunctional membrane has important prospects in the recovery of viscous oil from the ocean or wastewater and the development of energy-saving materials.

Abstract:Designing and constructing a stable water-retention layer acting as the isolation between the oil and membrane surface holds great significance for solving the membrane fouling problems in oil/water separation, including common layered oil/water mixtures, immiscible oil-in-water emulsions, and even high-viscosity crude oil-in-water emulsions. Inspired by the self-cleaning property of sea urchin thorns, a bioinspired anti-oil-fouling hierarchically structured membranes decorated with urchin-like α-FeOOH particles was successfully prepared via the layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly method, maintaining numerous effective micro-nanopores. The hierarchical structured membrane exhibited superior superhydrophilicity/underwater superoleophobicity, high water-retention ability, and preferable anti-oil-fouling properties. Abstract:Separating emulsified oil from wastewater is urgent from both environmental and economic perspectives. Membrane separation has been considered as an efficient technique for handling these emulsified oils. However, membranes often suffer from serious fouling issue due to the adhesion of oil droplet on membrane surface. Owing to the strong water affinity, hydration ability, and anti-oil-fouling property of hydrogels, surface engineering of filter membranes with hydrogel has become an effective way to solve the fouling issue for highly efficient oil-in-water emulsion separation. This review provides an extensive summary and analyses on the progress of this topic. The principles for designing hydrogels with outstanding anti-oil-fouling property are firstly introduced. Then, surface engineering strategies for constructing hydrogel on filter membranes toward oil-in-water emulsion separation are highlighted. Finally, the challenges and outlook for the future of this field are discussed.

Abstract:Separating oil-water mixtures is critical in a variety of practical applications, including the treatment of industrial wastewater, oil spill cleanups, as well as the purification of petroleum products. Among various methodologies that have been utilized, membranes are the most attractive technology for separating oil-water emulsions. In recent years, selective wettability membranes have attracted particular attention for oil-water separations. The membrane surfaces with hydrophilic and in-air oleophobic wettability have demonstrated enhanced effectiveness for oil-water separations in comparison with underwater oleophobic membranes. However, developing a hydrophilic and in-air oleophobic surface for a membrane is not a trivial task. The coating delamination process is a critical challenge when applying these membranes for separations. Inspired by the above, in this study we utilize poly(ethylene glycol)diacrylate (PEGDA) and 1H,1H,2H,2H-heptadecafluorodecyl acrylate (F-acrylate) to fabricate a hydrophilic and in-air oleophobic coating on a filter. We utilize methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane (MEMO) as an adhesion promoter to enhance the adhesion of the coating to the filter. The filter demonstrates robust oil repellency preventing oil adhesion and oil fouling. Utilizing the filter, gravity-driven and continuous separations of surfactant-stabilized oil-water emulsions are demonstrated. Finally, we demonstrate that the filter can be reused multiple times upon rinsing for further oil-water separations.

Abstract:Importance of multifunctional membranes for efficient purification of contaminated oily wastewater is globally realized due to depleting fresh water sources and environmental pollution. Electrospun superwettable membranes with heterostructures have attracted attention because of their versatile features, high surface area and multifunctionality. Herein, fish gill inspired superhydrophilic nanofibrous membranes of selective wettability were prepared using zeolitic imidazole framework (ZIF-8) decoration. A unique near-gel resin (nGR) emulsion electrospinning was employed to produce core-sheath structured nanofibrous membranes comprised of crosslinked polystyrene (PS) as the core and crosslinked polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) based sheath. An in-situ growth of ZIF-8 over the fibrous membrane's surface ensured retaining membrane's superhydrophilicity and underwater oleophobic behaviour and captured oil droplets to demulsify various oil/water emulsions during separation. ZIF-8 based biomimetic membrane achieved higher emulsion separation efficiency (98.9%) toward surfactant stabilized emulsions as compared to undecorated membrane. The membranes were also developed to attain multifunctionality via variation in ZIF-8 growth process. The membrane was evaluated for emulsion separation under various environmental conditions and its reusability up to 5 separation cycles. The controlled growth of ZIF-8 also facilitated heavy metal ion removal (85% at 100 ppb concentration) along with emulsion separation. The effect of growth loading on sorption capacity was evaluated in different oils and organic solvents. The membrane with high ZIF-8 growth showed excellent sorption capacity (4000%) toward toluene with consistent sorption up to 5 cycles of sorption-desorption. Overall, this study demonstrated a facile strategy to create multifunctional nanofibrous membrane through emulsion electrospinning, which can effectively be used in efficient emulsion separation, heavy metal ion removal and oil sorption.

Abstract:The oil/water (o/w) separation is a global challenge because of the increasing water contamination by oil spill accidents, and oil-containing wastewater produced by food, textile, and petrochemical industries. In this study, we have developed bacterial cellulose (BC) based superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic (SUS) membrane for o/w separation. The membrane was designed through a facile method by blending BC nanofibers with silica microparticles (SiO2-MPs), which was further modified by bio-inspired polydopamine (PDA) coatings. The composite membrane exhibited SiO2-MPs dependent o/w separation with a high separation efficiency of >99.9% and a high flux rate of ∼10660 Lm-2 h-1 while applying a small negative pressure (0.3-0.5 bar). The membrane with different content of SiO2-MPs also showed the potential to separate oil-in-water emulsion with the highest oil rejection of 98.2% and the highest flux rate of ∼1250 Lm-2 h-1 on an ultra-low pressure <0.1 bar. Moreover, the membrane showed antifouling properties, recyclability, and stability in harsh conditions.

Abstract:Membrane fouling is a major challenge for long-term oil/water separation. The incomplete degradation of organic pollutants or membrane damage exists in the common methods of membrane regeneration. Herein, a dual-responsive nanofibrous membrane with high water-in-oil emulsion separation efficiency and smart cleaning properties is reported, which shows complete restoration of its original separation performance. The pH-responsive and upper critical solution temperature (UCST)-type thermoresponsive nanofibrous membrane with a micro/nanosphere structure was developed via a one-step-blending electrospinning strategy. The membrane displays high hydrophobicity/oleophilicity at pH 7 and 25 degrees C and hydrophilicity/oleophobicity at pH 3 and 55 degrees C. As a result, it exhibits an ultrahigh permeability of 60528.76 L m(-2) h(-1) bar(-1) and a separation efficiency of 99.5% for water-in-D5 emulsions at room temperature (25 degrees C). Moreover, the contaminated membranes could be easily reclaimed by being rinsed with warm acidic water (pH 3 and 55 degrees C). The membrane maintained high separation performance after being used for multiple cycles, indicating its scalable application for purifying emulsified oil. This study provides a facial method of constructing membranes with multiscale hierarchical structures and a new idea for the design of recyclable oil/water separation membranes.

Abstract:Superhydrophobicity is a physical feature of surfaces occurring in many organisms and has been applied (e.g. lotus effect) in bionic technical applications. Some aquatic species are able to maintain persistent air layers under water (Salvinia effect) and thus become increasingly interesting for drag reduction and other 'bioinspired' applications. However, another feature of superhydrophobic surfaces, i.e. the adsorption (not absorption) and subsequent superficial transportation and desorption capability for oil, has been neglected. Intense research is currently being carried out on oil-absorbing bulk materials like sponges, focusing on oleophilic surfaces and meshes to build membranes for oil-water separation. This requires an active pumping of oil-water mixtures onto or through the surface. Here, we present a novel passive, self-driven technology to remove oil from water surfaces. The oil is adsorbed onto a superhydrophobic material (e.g. textiles) and transported on its surface. Vertical and horizontal transportation is possible above or below the oil-contaminated water surface. The transfer in a bioinspired novel bionic oil adsorber is described. The oil is transported into a container and thus removed from the surface. Prototypes have proven to be an efficient and environmentally friendly technology to clean oil spills from water without chemicals or external energy supply. Abstract:Dual‐superlyophobic membranes that exhibit underwater superoleophobicity and underoil superhydrophobicity concurrently have gained considerable attention for oil/water separation. To effectively treat oily wastewater, consistent efforts have been made to develop fast and simple methodologies with low cost, environmentally friendly materials. Here, the dual‐superlyophobic membranes are obtained based on one‐step tailored growth of mussel‐inspired polydopamine (PDA) nanoparticles on the surfaces of biomass membranes. The results demonstrate that the universal adhesion of PDA allows the modification of biomass fibers of different surface hydrophobicity. The oxidation polymerization of dopamine leads to the rapid growth of PDA nanostructures, which form stable coatings of high roughness instead of homogeneous conformal coatings generated in the conventional synthesis of PDA. The amphiphilic nature of PDA and the rough surfaces imparted by the PDA nanostructures collectively lead to dual‐superlyophobic properties. Membranes of the coated biomass fibers prewetted by either water or oil become impermeable to the counterpart liquids, giving rise to efficient oil–water separation in a broad spectrum of mixtures. In particular, the membranes derived from cotton or kapok fibers show oil/water separation efficiencies of above 99.98%, fluxes ranging from 4000 to 22 200 L m−2 h−1, and robust performance for regeneration and repeated uses.

Abstract:The separation of oil-in-water emulsion is an urgent challenge because its massive production and discharge from daily and industrial activities have caused severe hazards to the ecosystem and serious threats to human health. Membrane technology is considered an outstanding solution strategy for the separation of oil-in-water emulsions due to its unique advantages of low cost, high efficiency, easy operation, and environmental friendliness. However, the membrane is easily fouled by the emulsion oil droplets during the separation process, causing a sharp decline in permeation flux, which greatly inhibits the long-term use of the membrane and largely shortens the membrane's life. Recently, it was found that endowing the membranes with special wettability e.g., superhydrophilic and superoleophobic can greatly enhance the permeability of the continuous water phase and inhibit the adhesion of oil droplets, thus promoting the separation performance and anti-oil-fouling property of membrane for oily emulsions. In this paper, we review and discuss the recent developments in membranes with special wettability for separating oil-in-water emulsions, including the mechanism analysis of emulsion separation membrane, membrane fouling issues, design strategies, and representative studies for enhancing the membrane's anti-oil-fouling ability and emulsion separation performance.

Abstract:This work presents an effective method of fabricating hierarchical Al2O3/SiO2 fiber membrane with reversible wettability for on-demand oil/water separation. In this strategy, the superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic surfaces are fabricated by in-situ growing hierarchical Al2O3 nanosheets on the SiO2 fiber surfaces that can be used as water-removing materials for oil/water separation. Then, the superhydrophobic/oleophilic surfaces are obtained by surface chemical modification with sodium laurate, which can be used as oil-removing materials for oil/water separation. Interestingly, the reversible wettability transformation of Al2O3/SiO2 fiber membrane can be controlled by the annealing and modification treatment alternately. The as-prepared Al2O3/SiO2 fiber membrane, combining the advantages and overcoming disadvantages of two modes, achieves reversible wettability transitions and on-demand oil/water separation. In addition, the Al2O3/SiO2 fiber membrane shows a significant chemical stability and super-wettability even after five annealing and surface modification cycles, indicating its excellent durability. The separation efficiency in both oil-removing mode and water-removing mode is over 95% for various oil/water mixtures through multiple recycle separation processes. This work not only provides a simple and cost-effective method to fabricate separation membrane with reversible wettability, but also shows great potential in remediation of large-scale oil spillage or organic solvents discharge at different environmental conditions.

Abstract:Membrane-based materials with special surface wettability have been applied widely for the treatment of increasing industrial oily waste water, as well as frequent oil spill accidents. However, traditional technologies are energy-intensive and limited, either by fouling or by the inability of a single membrane to separate all types of oil-water mixtures. Herein, a biomimetic monolayer copper membrane (BMCM), composed of multiscale hierarchical dendritic structures, is cleverly designed and successfully fabricated on steel mesh substrate. It not only possesses the ability of energy-efficient oil-water separation but also excellent self-recovery anti-oil-fouling properties (<150 s). The BMCM even keeps high separation efficiency (>93%) after ten-time cycling tests. More importantly, it retains efficient oil-water separation capacity for five different oils. In fact, these advanced features are benefited by the synergistic effect of chemical compositions and physical structures, which is inspired by the typical nonwetting strategy of butterfly wing scales. The findings in this work may inspire a facile but effective strategy for repeatable and antipollution oil-water separation, which is more suitable for various applications under practical conditions, such as wastewater treatment, fuel purification, separation of commercially relevant oily water, and so forth.

Abstract:Water pollution has become a worldwide problem, partly due to the frequently happened oil spilling and oily wastewater discharge. As there are various forms of oil existing in water, the separation of oil-in-water emulsion is essential for thoroughly water purification. With the development of membrane technology, efficient emulsion separation has been achieved by constructing surfaces with super-wettability and high roughness on membranes. In this study, a facile method was established to fabricate a kind of highly hydrophilic and underwater oleo phobic polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membranes. High efficiency, high flux and long-term stability were achieved during the oil-in-water emulsion separation process. The effect of surface wettability and membrane pore size on the demulsification and separation was studied. It was demonstrated that the emulsion separation is not only an interface problem, but also related to the pore structure of filtration membrane. Due to the high surface hydrophilicity and underwater oleophobicity, the membranes exhibited outstanding anti-fouling property and long-term performance. Our studies provided a theoretical guidance for the construction and application of emulsion separation materials for underwater use.
A self-cleaning zwitterionic nanofibrous membrane for highly efficient oil-in-water separation

Abstract:The oil and bacteria adhesion during membrane separation process brings great challenges to the operation costs and membrane service life. Meantime, the strong chemical corrosion in sewage seriously limits the durability of membrane as well. Herein, a facile strategy is developed for fabricating highly stable and efficient zwitterionic nanofibrous membrane (NFM) with self-cleaning feature via the combination of in-situ cross-linking of poly (sulfobetaine methacrylate) (PSBMA) and electrospun poly (ether sulfone) (PES) nanofibers. Owing to the introduction of zwitterionic functional groups, the PSBMA/PES NFM exhibits superior antifouling ability (over 3 cycles of crude oil fouling/self-cleaning and up to 7 days of bacteria adhesion/repelling tests). Moreover, the membrane also presents remarkable chemical stability in acidic, alkaline and salty environments; and exhibits excellent separation performance for both layered oil/water mixture and oil-in-water emulsion as well. Furthermore, the membrane is capable to remove bacteria during the continuous oil/water mixture separation. Overall, the proposed strategy provides a new perspective into developing long-term antifouling membrane materials for complicated oily wastewater remediation in various corrosive environments.

Abstract:Oil films on water are an increasingly major contamination problem worldwide. In 2020, we published a novel adsorption and transportation technology for oil–water separation based on biological role models like the floating fern Salvinia. This application provides an unexpected ability for the fast and efficient removal of oil films, particularly in ecologically important freshwater biota. A single small Bionic Oil Adsorber (BOA) with 1 m2 functional textile can collect up to 4 L of oil per hour, which equals about 100 m2 of oil film from a water surface into a collecting vessel. This is a safe, fast, and sustainable solution for the ubiquitous contaminations of, e.g., fuel oil in freshwater environments. Here, we present updated, new experimental data, and a review of the literature published since.

Abstract:Abstract Here, we present a proactive fouling prevention mechanism that endows superhydrophilic membranes with antifouling capability against migratory viscous crude oil fouling. By simulating the hierarchical architecture/chemical composition of a dahlia leaf, a membrane surface is decorated with wrinkled-pattern microparticles, exhibiting a unique proactive fouling prevention mechanism based on a synergistic hydration layer/steric hindrance. The density functional theory and physicochemical characterizations demonstrate that the main chains of the microparticles are bent towards Fe 3+ through coordination interactions to create nanoscale wrinkled patterns on smooth microparticle surfaces. Nanoscale wrinkled patterns reduce the surface roughness and increase the contact area between the membrane surface and water molecules, expanding the steric hindrance between the oil molecules and membrane surface. Molecular dynamic simulations reveal that the water-molecule densities and strengths of the hydrogen bonds are higher near the resultant membrane surface. With this concept, we can successfully inhibit the initial adhesion, migration, and deposition of oil, regardless of the viscosity, on the membrane surface and achieve migratory viscous crude oil antifouling. This research on the PFP mechanism opens pathways to realize superwettable materials for diverse applications in fields related to the environment, energy, health, and beyond.
