Abstract:All atomically laminated MAB phases (M = transition metal, A = A-group element, and B = boron) exhibit orthorhombic or tetragonal symmetry, with the only exception being hexagonal Ti2InB2. Inspired by the recent discovery of chemically ordered hexagonal carbides, i-MAX phases, we perform an extensive first-principles study to explore chemical ordering upon metal alloying of M2AlB2 (M from groups 3 to 9) in orthorhombic and hexagonal symmetry. Fifteen stable novel phases with in-plane chemical ordering are identified, coined i-MAB, along with 16 disordered stable alloys. The predictions are verified through the powder synthesis of Mo4/3Y2/3AlB2 and Mo4/3Sc2/3AlB2 of space group R3̅m (no. 166), displaying the characteristic in-plane chemical order of Mo and Y/Sc and Kagomé ordering of the Al atoms, as evident from X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. The discovery of i-MAB phases expands the elemental space of these borides with M = Sc, Y, Zr, Hf, and Nb, realizing an increased property tuning potential of these phases as well as their suggested potential two-dimensional derivatives.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Effective Model for Rare-earth Kitaev Materials and Its Classical Monte Carlo Simulation

Abstract:Recently, the family of rare-earth chalcohalides were proposed as candidate compounds to realize the Kitaev spin liquid (KSL) [Chin. Phys. Lett. 38 047502 (2021)]. In the present work, we firstly propose an effective spin Hamiltonian consistent with the symmetry group of the crystal structure. Then we apply classical Monte Carlo simulations to preliminarily study the model and establish a phase diagram. When approaching to the low temperature limit, several magnetic long range orders are observed, including the stripe, the zigzag, the antiferromagnetic (AFM), the ferromagnetic (FM), the incommensurate spiral (IS), the multi- Q , and the 120° ones. We further calculate the thermodynamic properties of the system, such as the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and the heat capacity. The ordering transition temperatures reflected in the two quantities agree with each other. For most interaction regions, the system is magnetically more susceptible in the ab-plane than in the c-direction. The stripe phase is special, where the susceptibility is fairly isotropic in the whole temperature region. These features provide useful information to understand the magnetic properties of related materials.
Transformation and reconstruction towards two-dimensional atomic laminates

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials derived from non-van der Waals solids are promising due to their fantastic physical and chemical properties, but it remains challenging to obtain 2D atomic laminates with high stability owing to the strong intrinsic covalent/metallic bonds and highly exposed active surface. Here, we report a versatile and scalable protocol to produce 2D atomic laminates, based on an unexpected topological transformation of MAX phases under hydrogen chloride gas, and/or subsequent reconstruction under some programmed gases/vapors. In contrast to the known approaches with liquid or molten medium, our method involves in a gas-phase reaction with fast thermodynamics for A layers and positive Gibbs free energies for MX slabs. Remarkably, through subsequent reconstruction in some active gases/vapors (O2, H2S, P, CH4, Al and Sn metal vapors), a big family of 2D atomic laminates with elusive configurations as well as high chemical/thermal stabilities and tunable electrical properties (from metallic to semiconductor-like behaviors) are achieved. Moreover, the resultant 2D atomic laminates can be facilely scaled up to 10 kilograms. We believe that the 2D atomic laminates would have broad applications in catalysis, energy storage, electromagnetic shielding interface and microwave absorption.

Out-Of-Plane Ordered Laminate Borides and Their 2D Ti-Based Derivative from Chemical Exfoliation

Abstract:Exploratory theoretical predictions in uncharted structural and compositional space are integral to materials discoveries. Inspired by M5 SiB2 (T2) phases, the finding of a family of laminated quaternary metal borides, M'4 M″SiB2 , with out-of-plane chemical order is reported here. 11 chemically ordered phases as well as 40 solid solutions, introducing four elements previously not observed in these borides are predicted. The predictions are experimentally verified for Ti4 MoSiB2 , establishing Ti as part of the T2 boride compositional space. Chemical exfoliation of Ti4 MoSiB2 and select removal of Si and MoB2 sub-layers is validated by derivation of a 2D material, TiOx Cly , of high yield and in the form of delaminated sheets. These sheets have an experimentally determined direct band gap of ≈4.1 eV, and display characteristics suitable for supercapacitor applications. The results take the concept of chemical exfoliation beyond currently available 2D materials, and expands the envelope of 3D and 2D candidates, and their applications.

Abstract:Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) can adopt one of several possible structures, with the most common being the trigonal prismatic and octahedral symmetry phases. Since the structure determines the electronic properties, being able to predict phase preferences of TMDs from just the knowledge of the constituent atoms is highly desired, but has remained a long-standing problem. In this study, we applied high-throughput quantum mechanical computations with machine learning algorithms to solve this old problem. Our analysis provides insights into determining physiochemical factors that dictate the phase preference of a TMD, identifying and going beyond the attributes considered by earlier researchers in predicting crystal structures. A knowledge of these underlying physiochemical factors not only helps us to rationalize, but also to accurately predict structural preferences. We show that machine learning algorithms are powerful tools that can be used not only to find new materials with targeted properties, but also to find connections between elemental attributes and the target property/properties that were not previously obvious. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevMaterials.6.094007 ©2022 American Physical Society

Global Phase Diagram of Competing Ordered and Quantum Spin Liquid Phases on the Kagomé Lattice

Abstract:We study the quantum phase diagram of the spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model on the kagomé lattice with first-, second-, and third-neighbor interactions $J_1$, $J_2$, and $J_3$ by means of density matrix renormalization group. For small $J_2$ and $J_3$, this model sustains a time-reversal invariant quantum spin liquid phase. With increasing $J_2$ and $J_3$, we find in addition a $q=(0,0)$ Néel phase, a chiral spin liquid phase, a valence-bond crystal phase, and a complex non-coplanar magnetically ordered state with spins forming the vertices of a cuboctahedron known as a cuboc1 phase. Both the chiral spin liquid and cuboc1 phase break time reversal symmetry in the sense of spontaneous scalar spin chirality. We show that the chiralities in the chiral spin liquid and cuboc1 are distinct, and that these two states are separated by a strong first order phase transition. The transitions from the chiral spin liquid to both the $q=(0,0)$ phase and to time-reversal symmetric spin liquid, however, are consistent with continuous quantum phase transitions.

Abstract:Finding viable Kagome lattices is vital for materializing novel phenomena in quantum materials. In this work, we performed element substitutions on CsV3Sb5 with space group P6/mmm, TbMn6Sn6 with space group P6/mmm, and CsV6Sb6 with space group R-3 m, respectively, as the parent compounds. A total of 4158 materials were obtained through element substitutions, and these materials were then calculated via density function theory in high-throughput mode. Afterward, 48 materials were identified with high thermodynamic stability (E_hull<5meV/atom). Furthermore, we compared the thermodynamic stability of three different phases with the same elemental composition and predicted some competing phases that may arise during material synthesis. Finally, by calculating the electronic structures of these materials, we attempted to identify patterns in the electronic structure variations as the elements change. This work provides guidance for discovering promising AM3X5/AM6X6 Kagome materials from a vast phase space.

Abstract:Manipulating materials with atomic-scale precision is essential for the development of next-generation material design toolbox. Tremendous efforts have been made to advance the compositional, structural, and spatial accuracy of material deposition and patterning. The family of 2D materials provides an ideal platform to realize atomic-level material architectures. The wide and rich physics of these materials have led to fabrication of heterostructures, superlattices, and twisted structures with breakthrough discoveries and applications. Here, we report a novel atomic-scale material design tool that selectively breaks and forms chemical bonds of 2D materials at room temperature, called atomic-layer substitution (ALS), through which we can substitute the top layer chalcogen atoms within the 3-atom-thick transition-metal dichalcogenides using arbitrary patterns. Flipping the layer via transfer allows us to perform the same procedure on the other side, yielding programmable in-plane multi-heterostructures with different out-of-plane crystal symmetry and electric polarization. First-principle calculations elucidate how the ALS process is overall exothermic in energy and only has a small reaction barrier, facilitating the reaction to occur at room temperature. Optical characterizations confirm the fidelity of this design approach, while TEM shows the direct evidence of Janus structure and suggests the atomic transition at the interface of designed heterostructure. Finally, transport and Kelvin probe measurements on MoXY (X,Y=S,Se; X and Y corresponding to the bottom and top layers) lateral multi-heterostructures reveal the surface potential and dipole orientation of each region, and the barrier height between them. Our approach for designing artificial 2D landscape down to a single layer of atoms can lead to unique electronic, photonic and mechanical properties previously not found in nature.

Self-organized Kagome-lattice in a metal-organic monolayer

Abstract:We report on the successful on-surface synthesis of metal-organic covalent coordination networks with a dense Kagome lattice of metallic centers. In the case of Mn centers ab-initio calculations show that the adsorbed monolayer on Ag(111) has all the characteristic features of a strictly two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic Kagome metal. Tetrahydroxyquinone (THQ) and metal atoms (M=Cu or Mn) are co-deposited on the Ag(111) substrate to build well-ordered 2D lattices M$_3$C$_6$O$_6$. The surface is studied by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to optimize the growth conditions like fluxes and temperatures. The details of the atomic, electronic and magnetic structures are clarified by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. XPS and DFT reveal a Cu$^+$ charge state and no local magnetic moments for the Cu-organic network. For the Mn-organic network, we find the charge state Mn$^{2+}$ and a local spin S=5/2. Charge transfer stabilizes the Cu$^+$ and Mn$^{2+}$ charge states. We find two different modifications of the M$_3$C$_6$O$_6$ lattice. DFT calculations which neglect the small spin-orbit coupling show a Dirac point, i.e. a band crossing with linear electron dispersion at the K-point of the Brillouin zone. This Dirac point is at the Fermi level if there is no charge transfer but drops by 100 meV if electron doping of Cu$_3$C$_6$O$_6$ on Ag(111) surface is acknowledged. We predict the magnetic couplings of an isolated M$_3$C$_6$O$_6$ monolayer to be short range and antiferromagnetic leading to high frustration at the Kagome lattice and a tendency towards a spin-liquid ground state. In the case of hole transfer from the substrates ferromagnetic ordering is introduced, making M$_3$C$_6$O$_6$ an interesting candidate for the quantum anomalous Hall effect.

Abstract:Strongly interacting electrons in layered materials give rise to a plethora of emergent phenomena, such as unconventional superconductivity. heavy fermions, and spin textures with non-trivial topology. Similar effects can also be observed in bulk materials, but the advantage of two dimensional (2D) systems is the combination of local accessibility by microscopic techniques and tuneability. In stacks of 2D materials, for example, the twist angle can be employed to tune their properties. However, while material choice and twist angle are global parameters, the full complexity and potential of such correlated 2D electronic lattices will only reveal itself when tuning their parameters becomes possible on the level of individual lattice sites. Here, we discover a lattice of strongly correlated electrons in a perfectly ordered 2D supramolecular network by driving this system through a cascade of quantum phase transitions using a movable atomically sharp electrostatic gate. As the gate field is increased, the molecular building blocks change from a Kondo-screened to a paramagnetic phase one-by-one, enabling us to reconstruct their complex interactions in detail. We anticipate that the supramolecular nature of the system will in future allow to engineer quantum correlations in arbitrary patterned structures.

Metal-organic kagome systems as candidates to study spin liquids, spin ice or the quantum anomalous Hall effect

Abstract:We present the results of first-principle calculations using the Vienna Ab-initio Simulation Package (VASP) for a new class of organometallics labeled TM3C6O6 (TM =Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni and Cu) in the form of planar, two-dimensional, periodic free-standing layers. These materials, which can be produced by on-surface coordination on metallic surfaces, have a kagome lattice of TM ions. Calculating the structural properties, we show that all considered materials have local magnetic moments in the ground state, but four of them (with Fe, Co, Ni and Cu) show spin-crossover behavior by changing the lattice constant, which could be valuable for possible epitaxy routes on various substrates. Surprisingly, we find a very large richness of electronic and magnetic properties, qualifying these materials as highly promising metal-organic topological quantum materials. We find semi-conductors with nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic (FM) or antiferromagnetic (AFM) couplings for V, and Sc and Cr, respectively, being of potential interest to study spin ice or spin liquids on the 2D kagome lattice. Other TM ion systems combine AFM couplings with metallic behavior (Ti, Fe and Ni) or are ferromagnetic kagome metals like Cu3C6O6 with symmetry protected Weyl crossings at the Fermi surface. For the latter compound, the spin orbit coupling is shown to be responsible for small gaps which should allow the observation of the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE).

Geometry Induced Sequence of Nanoscale Frank-Kasper and Quasicrystal Mesophases in Giant Surfactants.

Abstract:Frank-Kasper (F-K) and quasicrystal phases were originally identified in metal alloys and only sporadically reported in soft materials. These unconventional sphere-packing schemes open up possibilities to design materials with different properties. The challenge in soft materials is how to correlate complex phases built from spheres with the tunable parameters of chemical composition and molecular architecture. Here, we report a complete sequence of various highly ordered mesophases by the self-assembly of specifically designed and synthesized giant surfactants, which are conjugates of hydrophilic polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane cages tethered with hydrophobic polystyrene tails. We show that the occurrence of these mesophases results from nanophase separation between the heads and tails and thus is critically dependent on molecular geometry. Variations in molecular geometry achieved by changing the number of tails from one to four not only shift compositional phase boundaries but also stabilize F-K and quasicrystal phases in regions where simple phases of spheroidal micelles are typically observed. These complex self-assembled nanostructures have been identified by combining X-ray scattering techniques and real-space electron microscopy images. Brownian dynamics simulations based on a simplified molecular model confirm the architecture-induced sequence of phases. Our results demonstrate the critical role of molecular architecture in dictating the formation of supramolecular crystals with "soft" spheroidal motifs and provide guidelines to the design of unconventional self-assembled nanostructures.
Combinatorial exploration of quantum spin liquid candidates in the herbertsmithite material family

Abstract:Geometric frustration of magnetic ions can lead to a quantum spin liquid ground state where long range magnetic order is avoided despite strong exchange interactions. The physical realization of quantum spin liquids comprises a major unresolved area of contemporary materials science. One prominent magnetically-frustrated structure is the kagome lattice. The naturally occurring minerals herbertsmithite [ZnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2$] and Zn-substituted barlowite [ZnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$BrF] both feature perfect kagome layers of spin-$1/2$ copper ions and display experimental signatures consistent with a quantum spin liquid state at low temperatures. To investigate other possible candidates within this material family, we perform a systematic first-principles combinatorial exploration of structurally related compounds [$A$Cu$_3$(OH)$_6B_2$ and $A$Cu$_3$(OH)$_6BC$] by substituting non-magnetic divalent cations ($A$) and halide anions ($B$, $C$). After optimizing such structures using density functional theory, we compare various structural and thermodynamic parameters to determine which compounds are most likely to favor a quantum spin liquid state. Convex hull calculations using binary compounds are performed to determine feasibility of synthesis. We also estimate the likelihood of interlayer substitutional disorder and spontaneous distortions of the kagome layers. After considering all of these factors as a whole, we select several promising candidate materials that we believe deserve further attention.

Abstract:Crystalline solids typically show robust long-range structural ordering, vital for their remarkable electronic properties and use in functional electronics, albeit with limited customization space. By contrast, synthetic molecular systems provide highly tunable structural topologies and versatile functionalities but are often too delicate for scalable electronic integration. Combining these two systems could harness the strengths of both, yet realizing this integration is challenging owing to distinct chemical bonding structures and processing conditions. Two-dimensional atomic crystals comprise crystalline atomic layers separated by non-bonding van der Waals gaps, allowing diverse atomic or molecular intercalants to be inserted without disrupting existing covalent bonds. This enables the creation of a diverse set of layered hybrid superlattices (LHSLs) composed of alternating crystalline atomic layers of variable electronic properties and self-assembled atomic or molecular interlayers featuring customizable chemical compositions and structural motifs. Here we outline strategies to prepare LHSLs and discuss emergent properties. With the versatile molecular design strategies and modular assembly processes, LHSLs offer vast flexibility for weaving distinct chemical constituents and quantum properties into monolithic artificial solids with a designable three-dimensional potential landscape. This opens unprecedented opportunities to tailor charge correlations, quantum properties and topological phases, thereby defining a rich material platform for advancing quantum information science.

Chemical Rules for Stacked Kagome and Honeycomb Topological Semimetals

Abstract:We study the chemical rules for predicting and understanding topological states in stacked kagome and honeycomb lattices in both analytical and numerical ways. Starting with a minimal five‐band tight‐binding model, we sort out all the topological states into five groups, which are determined by the interlayer and intralayer hopping parameters. Combined with the model, we design an algorithm to obtain a series of experimentally synthesized topological semimetals with kagome and honeycomb layers, i.e., IAMX family (IA = Alkali metal element, M = Rare earth metal element, X = Carbon group element), in the inorganic crystal structure database. A follow‐up high‐throughput calculation shows that IAMX family materials are all nodal‐line semimetals and they will be Weyl semimetals after taking spin‐orbit coupling into consideration. To have further insights into the topology of the IAMX family, a detailed chemical rule analysis is carried out on the high‐throughput calculations, including the lattice constants of the structure, intralayer and interlayer couplings, bond strengths, electronegativity, and so on, which are consistent with our tight‐binding model. our study provides a way to discover and modulate topological properties in stacked kagome and honeycomb crystals and offers candidates for studying topology‐related properties like topological superconductors and axion insulators.

Quantum states and intertwining phases in kagome materials

Abstract:In solid materials, nontrivial topological states, electron correlations, and magnetism are central ingredients for realizing quantum properties, including unconventional superconductivity, charge and spin density waves, and quantum spin liquids. The Kagome lattice, made up of connected triangles and hexagons, can host these three ingredients simultaneously and has proven to be a fertile platform for studying diverse quantum phenomena including those stemming from the interplay of these ingredients. In this review, we introduce the fundamental properties of the Kagome lattice as well as discuss the complex observed phenomena seen in several emergent material systems such as the intertwining of charge order and superconductivity in some Kagome metals, modulation of magnetism and topology in some Kagome magnets, and symmetry breaking with Mott physics in the breathing Kagome insulators. We also highlight many open questions in the field as well as future research directions of Kagome systems.

Kagome Bands Disguised in a Coloring-Triangle Lattice

Abstract:The kagome bands hosting exotic quantum phases generally and understandably pertain only to a kagome lattice. This has severely hampered the research of kagome physics due to the lack of real kagome-lattice materials. Interestingly, we discover that a coloring-triangle (CT) lattice, named after color-triangle tiling, also hosts kagome bands. We demonstrate first theoretically the equivalency between the kagome and CT lattices, and then computationally in photonic (waveguide lattice) and electronic (Au overlayer on electride Ca2N surface) systems by first-principles calculations. The theory can be generalized to even distorted kagome and CT lattices to exhibit ideal kagome bands. Our findings open an avenue to explore the alluding kagome physics.

Abstract:The unique magnetic properties of two dimensional (2D) materials have demonstrated huge potential for applications in nanodevices and spintronics. In this work, we propose a new Kagome lattice, Co3X8 (X = Cl and Br), based on density-functional-theory (DFT) calculation. We find that Co/X in Co3X8 has spontaneous movement in the lattice, resulting in 156- and12- phases of Co3X8 and diverse magnetic and electronic properties. We show that the magnetic and electronic properties of Co3X8 can be engineered by strain, and the magnetic properties of Co3X8 are highly related to the spontaneous movement of X. Moreover, the transportation property of 12-Co3X8 shows clear angle-dependent features due to the symmetry breaking as caused by the spontaneous movement of X. Our findings may provide not only a possible Kagome lattice with unique properties, but also the strategy for designing nanodevices and spintronics.
