Abstract:In 2017, STAR Collaboration reported the measurements of hyperon global polarization in heavy ion collisions, suggesting the subatomic fireball fluid created in these collisions as the most vortical fluid. There remains the interesting question: at which beam energy the truly most vortical fluid will be located. In this work we perform a systematic study on the beam energy dependence of hyperon global polarization phenomenon, especially in the interesting $\hat{O}(1\sim 10)\ \rm GeV$ region. We find a non-monotonic trend, with the global polarization to first increase and then decrease when beam energy is lowered from $27~\rm GeV$ down to $3~\rm GeV$. The maximum polarization signal has been identified around $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 7.7~\rm GeV$, where the heavy ion collisions presumably create the most vortical fluid. Detailed experimental measurements in the $\hat{O}(1\sim 10)\ \rm GeV$ beam energy region are expected to test the prediction very soon.

Global spin polarization of multistrange hyperons and feed-down effect in heavy-ion collisions

Abstract:Global spin polarization of hyperons is an important observable to probe the vorticity of the quark-gluon plasma produced in heavy-ion collisions. We calculate the global polarizations of Λ, Ξ − , and Ω − in Au+Au collisions at energies s NN = 7.7–200 GeV based on a multiphase transport model. Our calculations suggest that their primary global polarizations fulfill P Ω − ≃ 5 / 3 P Ξ − ≃ 5 / 3 P Λ . We also estimate the feed-down effect of particle decay on the global polarization. With the feed-down effect taken into account, the global polarizations of Λ and Ξ − are clearly separated, and the final global polarizations are in the ordering: P Ω − > P Ξ − > P Λ . Such a relation can be tested in experiments, which will provide us more information about the global polarization mechanism.

Abstract:Vortical structure of hot-dense matter in heavy ion collisions can be probed through global polarization of emitted particles. Hyperon's weak decays provides opportunity to measure this phenomenon. Global polarization of hyperons was measured by the STAR experiment at RHIC for Au + Au collisions with = 3–200 GeV and at the LHC for Pb + Pb collisions with = 2.76 and 5.02 TeV. Global polarization of multistrange hyperons, such as can provide new information for hydrodynamic description of the system and its vorticity structure. In these proceedings, we report results of global polarization measurement for Au + Au collisions at = 19.6 and 27 GeV.

Abstract:In non-central heavy-ion collisions, a large orbital angular momentum of the colliding system is produced, which is then partially transferred to the created medium, resulting in the particle polarization on average along the initial angular momentum, known as global polarization. It was predicted almost 20 years ago and the first observation of $\Lambda$ global polarization was made by the STAR Collaboration in 2017. Since then, a lot of progress have been made in the polarization measurements including global polarization of multistrange hyperons and the polarization along the beam direction induced by azimuthal anisotropic flow. In these proceedings, we present recent experimental progress on the hyperon polarization measurements in heavy-ion collisions.

Polarization and Vorticity in the Quark Gluon Plasma

Abstract:The quark-gluon plasma produced by collisions between ultra-relativistic heavy nuclei is well described in the language of hydrodynamics. Non-central collisions are characterized by very large angular momentum, which in a fluid system manifests as flow vorticity. This rotational structure can lead to a spin polarization of the hadrons that eventually emerge from the plasma, providing experimental access to flow substructure at unprecedented detail. Recently, first observations of $\Lambda$ hyperon polarization along the direction of collisional angular momentum have been reported. These measurements are in broad agreement with hydrodynamic and transport-based calculations and reveal that the QGP is the most vortical fluid ever observed. However, there remain important tensions between theory and observation which might be fundamental in nature. In the relatively mature field of heavy ion physics, the discovery of global hyperon polarization and three-dimensional simulations of the collision have opened an entirely new direction of research. We discuss the current status of this rapidly developing area and directions for future research.

Abstract:The global and local polarization measurements of $\Lambda$ ($\bar{\Lambda}$) hyperons by STAR and ALICE Collaborations open up an immense interest in investigating the polarization dynamics in heavy-ion collisions. Recent studies suggest the transverse component of the vorticity field is responsible for the global spin polarization, while the longitudinal component of the vorticity field accounts for the local polarization. The local polarization of $\Lambda$-hyperons arises due to the anisotropic flows in the transverse plane, indicating a quadrupole pattern of the longitudinal vorticity along the beam direction. The present study focuses on the local (longitudinal) polarization of $\Lambda$ and $\bar{\Lambda}$ in Au$+$Au and Pb$+$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV and 5.02 TeV, respectively. Further, we explore the centrality and transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) dependence of longitudinal polarization using hydrodynamic and transport models. All these models predict a maximum longitudinal polarization in mid-central collisions around 30-50 \% centrality at $p_{\rm T} \approx$ 2.0 - 3.0 GeV/c. These findings on longitudinal polarization advocate the existence of a thermal medium in non-central heavy-ion collisions. Our findings are in agreement with corresponding experimental data at the RHIC and LHC energies.

Hyperon polarization and its relation with directed flow in high-energy nuclear collisions

Abstract:We investigate the hyperon polarization and its relation with the directed flow of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in non-central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} = 27$ GeV. A modified 3-dimensional (3D) Glauber model is developed and coupled to a (3+1)-D viscous hydrodynamic evolution of the QGP. Within this framework, we obtain a satisfactory simultaneous description of the directed flow of identified particles and $\Lambda$ polarization, and show sensitivity of polarization to both the tilted geometry and the longitudinal flow profile of the QGP. A non-monotonic transverse momentum dependence of the $\Lambda$ polarization is found in our calculation, which is absent from hydrodynamic simulation using other initialization methods and can be tested by future experimental data with higher precision. The relation between the global polarization and directed flow of $\Lambda$ is explored as the longitudinal flow field or the medium deformation varies. Due to the common origin of these two observables, their combination may provide a more stringent constraint on the initial condition of the QGP.

Abstract:Global hyperon polarization and anisotropic transverse flow are important observables for studying the properties of the strongly interacting matter produced in relativistic heavy ion collisions. The former provides information about the initial angular momentum in the non-central collisions and the latter contains information about the early evolution of the overlap region and the equation of state. Investigating of both effects at NICA energies is an important goal of the MPD experiment. In this work we study the global polarization of Λ hyperons and its correlation with the directed flow of the strongly interacting matter produced in the Bi + Bi collisions at = 9.2 GeV generated with the PHSD (Parton–Hadron–String Dynamics) model.

Abstract:The experimental data of the global polarization of Λ hyperon, ϕ and K*0 vector mesons in high-energy heavy ion collision confirm the new phenomenon of global polarization of hot-dense QCD matter, which has attracted extensive attention from researchers and has become a new hot research direction in the frontier of high-energy nuclear physics. This paper reviews the recent global polarization measurements. We focus on the global polarization measurements of Λ hyperon and ϕ, K*0 mesons, carried out by the solenoidal tracker detector (STAR) collaboration group at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at its Phase I of Beam Energy Scan program, and extend to the global polarization measurements containing multiple strange quark particles, such as Ξ, Ω and the local polarization studies of Λ along the beam direction. In the paper, we also briefly comment on the measurements at higher energy from the large hadron collider (LHC) and at very low energy in HADES experiment. In the end of the paper, the physical information given by these experimental results is also briefly discussed.

Abstract:We revisit the azimuthal angle dependence of the local spin polarization of hyperons in heavy-ion collisions at 200 GeV in the framework of the (3+1)D viscous hydrodynamic model CLVisc. Two different initial conditions are considered in our simulation: the optical Glauber initial condition without initial orbital angular momentum and the AMPT initial condition with an initial orbital angular momentum. We find that the azimuthal angle dependence of the hyperon polarization strongly depends on the choice of the so-called 'spin chemical potential' $\Omega_{\mu\nu}$. With $\Omega_{\mu\nu}$ chosen to be proportional to the temperature vorticity, our simulation shows qualitatively coincidental results with the recent measurements at RHIC for both the longitudinal and transverse polarization. We argue that such a coincidence may be related to the fact that the temperature vorticity is approximately conserved in the hot quark-gluon matter.

Abstract:We investigate the spin alignment of vector mesons arising from locally polarized quarks and anti-quarks (local spin alignment) in heavy-ion collisions. We find that <math>ρ00≠1/3</math> does not necessarily signal the global polarization of quarks and anti-quarks along the orbital angular momentum of the system, but may also originate from their local spin polarization. Such local spin polarization could be induced by local vorticity arising from the anisotropic expansion of the fireball. We further propose experimental observables that can distinguish between the local and the global spin alignments. Measurements of these observables in heavy-ion collisions can probe the vorticity pattern and shed light on the puzzles of ϕ and <math>K⁎0</math> spin alignments.

Abstract:The global polarization of the $\Lambda$ and $\overline\Lambda$ hyperons is measured for Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}$ = 2.76 and 5.02 TeV recorded with the ALICE at the LHC. The results are reported differentially as a function of collision centrality and hyperon's transverse momentum ($p_{\rm{T}}$) for the range of centrality 5-50%, $0.5 < p_{\rm{T}} <5$ GeV/$c$, and rapidity $|y|<0.5$. The hyperon global polarization averaged for Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}$ = 2.76 and 5.02 TeV is found to be consistent with zero, $\langle P_{\rm{H}}\rangle$ (%) $\approx$ - 0.01 $\pm$ 0.05 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.03 (syst.) in the collision centrality range 15-50%, where the largest signal is expected. The results are compatible with expectations based on an extrapolation from measurements at lower collision energies at RHIC, hydrodynamical model calculations, and empirical estimates based on collision energy dependence of directed flow, all of which predict the global polarization values at LHC energies of the order of 0.01%.

Polarization phenomenon in heavy-ion collisions

Abstract:The strongly interacting system created in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions behaves almost as an ideal fluid with rich patterns of the velocity field exhibiting strong vortical structure. Vorticity of the fluid, via spin-orbit coupling, leads to particle spin polarization. Due to the finite orbital momentum of the system, the polarization on average is not zero; it depends on the particle momenta reflecting the spatial variation of the local vorticity. In the last few years, this field experienced a rapid growth due to experimental discoveries of the global and local polarizations. Recent measurements triggered further development of the theoretical description of the spin dynamics and suggestions of several new mechanisms for particle polarization.

Abstract:We study the global polarizations of Λ, Ξ−, and Ω− hyperons in noncentral Au + Au collisions at √SNN = 7.7-200 GeV$\sqrt {{S_{{\rm{NN}}}}} = 7.7 - 200\,{\rm{GeV}}$SNN=7.7−200 GeV. We highlight the importance of effect of decay feeddown to the measured global polarization. With the decay contributions taken into account, the global polarization ordering PΩ− > PΞ− > PΛ${P_{{\Omega ^ - }}} > {P_{{\Xi ^ - }}} > {P_\Lambda }$PΩ−>PΞ−>PΛ can be naturally explained, which is consistent with the observation recently reported from the STAR experiment from Au+Au collisions at 200 GeV. We also extend our calculations to predict expectations from the RHIC-BES II data.

Abstract:In non-central relativistic heavy ion collisions,the colliding nuclear system possesses a huge global orbital angular momentum in the direction opposite to the normal of the reaction plane.Due to the spin-orbit coupling in strong interaction,such a huge orbital angular momentum leads to a global spin polarization of the quark matter system produced in the collision process.The global polarization effect in high energy heavy ion collisions was first predicted theoretically and confirmed by STAR experiments at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider in Brookhaven National Laboratory.The discovery has attracted much attention to the study of spin effects in heavy ion collision and leads to a new direction in high energy heavy ion physics) Spin Physics in Heavy Ion Collisions.In this paper,we briefly review the original ideas,the calculation methods,the main results and recent theoretical developments in last years.First,we present a short discussion of the spin-orbit coupling which is an intrinsic property for a relativistic fermionic quantum system.Then we review how the global orbital angular momentum can be generated innon-central heavy ion collisions and how the global orbital angular momentum can be transferred to the local orbital angular momentum distribution in two limit model|Landan fireball model and Bjorken scaling model.After that,we review how we can describe the scattering process with initial local orbital angular momentum in the formalism of scattering cross section in impact parameter space and how we calculate the polarization of the quarks and antiquarks in quark gluon plasma produced in non-central heavy ion collisions after single or multiple scattering.We also give a brief review on how the global polarization can be predicted from the formalism of relativistic hydrodynamics with the generalized Cooper-Frye formula with spin.Finally,we discuss how the quark’s polarization can be transferred to the final hadron’s polarization.We focus on the hyperon’s polarization and vector meson’s spin alignment produced in heavy-ion collisions.
Probing early-time longitudinal dynamics with the $Λ$ hyperon's spin polarization in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

Abstract:We systematically study the hyperon global polarization's sensitivity to the collision systems' initial longitudinal flow velocity in hydrodynamic simulations. By explicitly imposing local energy-momentum conservation when mapping the initial collision geometry to macroscopic hydrodynamic fields, we study the evolution of systems' orbital angular momentum (OAM) and fluid vorticity. We find that a simultaneous description of the $\Lambda$ hyperons' global polarization and the slope of pion's directed flow can strongly constrain the size of longitudinal flow at the beginning of hydrodynamic evolution. We extract the size of the initial longitudinal flow and the fraction of orbital angular momentum in the produced QGP fluid as a function of collision energy with the STAR measurements in the RHIC Beam Energy Scan program. We find that there is about 100-200 $\hbar$ OAM that remains in the mid-rapidity fluid at the beginning of hydrodynamic evolution. We further exam the effects of different hydrodynamic gradients on the spin polarization of $\Lambda$ and $\bar{\Lambda}$. The gradients of $\mu_B/T$ can change the ordering between $\Lambda$'s and $\bar{\Lambda}$'s polarization.

Abstract:The gold--gold collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=7.7$ and $11.5$GeV are simulated within the PHSD transport model. In each collision event, the spectator nucleons are separated and the fluidization procedure for the participants is performed. The local velocities are determined in the Landau frame and the kinematic and thermal vorticity fields are evaluated. We analyze the thermodynamic properties of the cells where $\Lambda$s and $\overline{\Lambda}$s were born or had their last interaction. Such cells contribute to the formation of the observed global polarization of hyperons induced by the thermal vorticity of the medium. The $\overline{\Lambda}$ polarization signal is found to be mainly determined by hot, dense, and highly vortical cells at the earlier stage of the collision, whereas the $\Lambda$ polarization signal is accumulated over the longer time and includes cells with lower vorticity. The calculated global polarizations for both $\Lambda$s and $\overline{\Lambda}$s agree well with the experimental finding by the STAR collaboration at energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=11.5$GeV. For collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=7.7$GeV, we can reproduce the STAR data for $\Lambda$ hyperons, but significantly underpredict the observed global polarization of $\overline{\Lambda}$. Furthermore, we consider the centrality dependence of the hyperon polarization in collisions at 7.7GeV. It increases with an increase of centrality, reaches a maximum at 65--75%, and then starts decreasing rapidly for peripheral collisions.
