Abstract:Biochar is produced by pyrolysis of biomass residues under limited oxygen conditions. In recent years, biochar as an amendment has received increasing attention on composting and soil remediation, due to its unique properties such as chemical recalcitrance, high porosity and sorption capacity, and large surface area. This paper provides an overview on the impact of biochar on the chemical characteristics (greenhouse gas emissions, nitrogen loss, decomposition and humification of organic matter) and microbial community structure during composting of organic wastes. This review also discusses the use of biochar for remediation of soils contaminated with organic pollutants and heavy metals as well as related mechanisms. Besides its aging, the effects of biochar on the environment fate and efficacy of pesticides deserve special attention. Moreover, the combined application of biochar and compost affects synergistically on soil remediation and plant growth. Future research needs are identified to ensure a wide application of biochar in composting and soil remediation. Graphical abstract ᅟ

Abstract:Biochar is produced from the pyrolysis of carbon-rich plant- and animal-residues under low oxygen and high temperature conditions and has been increasingly used for its positive role in soil compartmentalization through activities such as carbon sequestration and improving soil quality. Biochar is also considered a unique adsorbent due to its high specific surface area and highly carbonaceous nature. Therefore, soil amendments with small amounts of biochar could result in higher adsorption and, consequently, decrease the bioavailability of contaminants to microbial communities, plants, earthworms, and other organisms in the soil. However, the mechanisms affecting the environmental fate and behavior of organic contaminants, especially pesticides in biochar-amended soil, are not well understood. The purpose of this work is to review the role of biochar in primary processes, such as adsorption–desorption and leaching of pesticides. Biochar has demonstrable effects on the fate and effects of pesticides and has been shown to affect the degradation and bioavailability of pesticides for living organisms. Moreover, some key aspects of agricultural and environmental applications of biochar are highlighted.

Abstract:At the international level, improving soil with coal is seen as a means to increase soil productivity, fertility and also to mitigate climate change. Biochar, which is used to increase land fertility and store carbon, is currently gaining scientific attention and popularity in the agriculture sector. It is a solid material made by pyrolysis process of any biomass, including weeds, agricultural leftovers and other plant wastes, to carbonise it and use it as a soil amendment and carbon sequestration medium. Biochar is a viable option for enhancing soil chemical properties such as cation exchange capacity (CEC) and soil pH, as well as lowering exchangeable acidity. Biochar was also discovered to boost soil biota by boosting nutrient availability, improving habitat appropriateness, increasing water retention and aeration as well as lowering harmful compounds in the soil. Also, it can help to mitigate climate change by sequestering carbon in the soil and reducing nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4) gas emissions to the environment by enhancing soil absorption.

Abstract:Biochar refers to the black carbon that is produced by the process of slow pyrolysis and act as a vehicle of carbon sequestration from renewable and sustainable biomass. This review describes the ability of biochar to improve the physical, chemical and biological properties of soil and thus increase crop yield and productivity. Benefits of application of biochar also includes lowering of bulk density, improving porosity, aggregation, water infiltration and water holding capacity of soils. It also darkens the soil colour which affects soil surface reflectance and thus helps to moderate soil temperature. Biochar addition enhances cation exchange capacity, increases soil pH, improves the supply and uptake of nutrients, reduces nutrient leaching losses, captures NH3 and leads to reduction in volatilization loss of nitrogen thus improving nutrient availability in soils. Application of biochar can also remediate soils contaminated with heavy metals and organic pollutants. It can also facilitate microbial colonisation in soil, enhance soil microbial biomass carbon, enzyme activity and the activity of mycorrhizal fungi.

Abstract:Biochar, a by-product of biomass pyrolysis, has been suggested as a mean to combat climate change, and at the same time to achieve agricultural and environmental benefits. As one possible source of the components with high aromatic structure in soil humus, biochar is of great importance in increasing soil carbon storage and improving soil nutrient retention and nutrient availability, and in maintaining the balance of soil ecosystem. This paper briefly reviewed and synthesized recent findings and discussions regarding the production and characteristics of biochar, its effects on global climate change and particularly in relation to the environmental effects of biochar in soils. Agronomic benefits of biochar application are critically highlighted because researches show that biochar had varied effects on crop productivity thorough the different bio-physical interactions between the biochar and the soils, which are deserved for further investigations. Potential pitfalls and knowledge gaps were briefly discussed on the environmental behavior and the effects of biochar in agricultural ecosystem.

Abstract:As the product of thermal degradation of organic materials, biochar is considered as a potential material for environmental pollution control and ecological remediation. It has been reported that with the properties of multi?pores, large specific surface area, and abundant functional groups, biochar can sequester carbon, immobilize soil contaminants, and improve soil texture, confirming the important role of biochar in soil pollution control and remediation from the physico?chemistry aspect. However, studies on the effects and long?time functions of biochar on soil microbe have just started. This paper offers the information on the effects of biochar on soil microorganisms in recent years both at home and abroad. The altered soil physico?chemical properties, either in terms of an altered resource store (e.g., available C, nutrients, water), or shifts in abiotic factors (e.g., pH, CEC) may result in changes to environmental soil, in terms of increased growth and reproduction of soil bacteria and fungi, causing the changes of the soil microbial community structure and function. Although the advantages of biochar application are obvious, in order to realize large?scale application research on biochar dosage, interaction mechanism between biochar?microorganisms? contaminants, long?term effects of biochar to soil microorganisms and the nutrient cycle need to be investigated systematically.

Abstract:Biochar, known as "Black Gold", has become a novel approach with potential benefits for soil amendment, such as improving soil physicochemical properties, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and enhancing soil fertility. The previous research studies mainly focus on exploring different methods for the improvement of biochar enriched nutrients as fertilizers; however, the migration and transformation mechanisms of these nutrients induced by biochar are yet to be extensively investigated. This paper provides an overview of recent advances in the application and mechanisms of biochar for soil amendment focusing on soil properties and nutrients improvement. Biochar positively alters microbial-mediated reactions in the soil C and N cycles, i.e., mineralization of C and N, and N2 fixation, thus enhancing maximizing C and N use efficiency and reducing the potential losses. Moreover, biochar provides reactive surfaces where P and K ions are retained in soil microbial biomass and in exchange sites, leading to increasing the availability of P and K to plants uptake. In addition, the toxic substances and potential ecological risks of biochar were also reviewed and discussed, thereby providing a baseline reference and guiding significance for future biochar applications as promising soil amendments.

Abstract:Land degradation and climate change, two intricately intertwined phenomena, demand appropriate management solutions to effectively tackle the escalating issues of food and nutritional security. In this context, the realm of agriculture confronts formidable challenges in its pursuit of soil resource reclamation, improving water quality, mitigating climate change, and maintaining soil and natural resources for posterity. Central to these aspirations is the preservation of an optimum organic matter, serving as a linchpin threshold is crucial for protecting the physical, chemical, and biological integrity of the soil, while simultaneously sustaining agricultural productivity. To address these multifaceted challenges, the introduction of diverse organic amendments has emerged as a crucial strategy. Noteworthy among these is the application of biochar, which functions as a soil conditioner capable of bolstering soil health, mitigating the impact of climate change, and securing global food security. Biochar is a carbon-enriched substance produced through pyrolysis of assorted biomass waste. It has a larger surface area, higher cation exchange capacity, and an extended carbon storage capability. The strategic integration of biochar production and subsequent soil application engenders an array of benefits, encompassing the amelioration of soil physical properties, augmented retention and the availability of nutrients, and the enhancement of biological activity, resulting in higher agricultural yields and societal benefits through the curtailment of soil to atmosphere greenhouse gas emissions. Abstract:The transformation of agricultural waste into biochar that is both eco-friendly and cost-effective is not only a wise recycling strategy but also a solution to environmental pollution management. Due to its low cost, high efficiency, simplicity of use, ecological sustainability, and reliability in terms of public safety, biochar from agricultural residues can be a useful alternative technique for controlling contaminants. Biochars have achieved significant progress in the following areas: reducing greenhouse gas emissions, reducing soil nutrient dispersion, sequestering atmospheric carbon into the soil, increasing agricultural productivity, and reducing the bioavailability of environmental contaminants. A comprehensive scientific assessment of the relationship between the properties of biochars and their impact on soil properties, environmental pollutant remediation, plant growth, yield, and resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses is warranted by recent advancements in the understanding of biochars. The primary factors influencing biochar's properties are the feedstock nature, heat transfer rate, residence duration, and pyrolysis temperature. The efficacy of biochar in the management of pollutants is significantly influenced by its elemental composition, ion-exchange capacity, pore size distribution, and surface area, which are contingent upon the nature of the feedstock, preparation conditions, and procedures. The chapter investigated the potential of biochar derived from agricultural refuse as a viable alternative for the long-term application of biochar in the environment, soil conditioning, and the remediation of environmental pollutants.

Abstract:Biochar is an extremely valuable carbon black material used since the Pre‐Columbian Era and is known for its properties to promote soil fertility and sustain crop production. Modern civilization has followed the footsteps of ancient civilizations and has prepared nano‐sized biochar (nano‐BC). The synthesis of nano‐BC can be achieved using different feedstock materials via pyrolysis, yielding bulk‐BCs which are mechanical transformed into the nano‐BCs, the final value‐added product. This review provides insights into structural, functional, and elemental properties concerning synthesis, surface properties including functional groups, and carbon stability. Moreover, the prospects of improving soil physicochemical properties including CEC, nutrient availability, soil water retention, and buffering capacity are discussed with agricultural implications. Mechanistic insights have been provided regarding how nano‐BC can improve soil health and could promote plant growth and physio‐biochemical properties, which further pave the way for its application to improve plant resilience to abiotic stress factors. Lastly, limited studies have been conducted that elucidate potential negative effects including contaminant mobilization and residual effects and these are also critically discussed. Above all, nano‐BC could be used as a beneficial soil amendment to boost crop production and enhance soil fertilities.

Abstract:In recent years, due to the impact of climate change caused by the emission of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane, scientists have begun to pay attention to the use of biochar, because it helps to capture and remove greenhouse gases in the atmosphere by means of biochar storage, converting it into a very stable form and storing it in the soil for thousands of years. This paper focuses on the hazards of organic pollutants, the treatment of pollutants by biochar and the benefits of environmental remediation. Biochar is the product of biomass energy raw material after pyrolysis, and its main component is carbon molecule. In terms of pollution treatment, biochar has a strong adsorption capacity for organic pollutants such as phenol, and can also improve soil heavy metal pollution by increasing soil cation exchange capacity (CEC) and PH. In addition, biochar is also used in low-temperature NH3-SCR denitrification catalysts to deal with nitrogen oxides in atmospheric pollutants and other aspects. Biochar is easy to ignite, non-polluting, smokeless and tasteless, less residue after combustion, light weight and high calorific value, the use of performance is better than most similar materials, known as the main force of human new energy and future fuel. The purpose of this paper is to provide the basis and reference for the development of biochar basic science and application technology.

Abstract:Biochar—charcoal used to amend land and sequester carbon—is attracting considerable interest. Its distinctive physical/chemical/biological properties, including high water-holding capacity, large surface area, cation exchange capacity, elemental composition, and pore size/volume/distribution, effect its recognized impacts, especially on microbial communities. These are explored in the context of agriculture, composting, and land remediation/restoration. Considerable focus is given to mycorrhizal associations, which are central to exploitation in environmental technologies involving biochar. The characteristics of biochar, its availability for nutrient cycling, including the beneficial and potentially negative/inhibitory impacts, and the requisite multidisciplinary analysis (physicochemical, microbiological, and molecular) to study these in detail, are explored.

Abstract:Biochar can be used for multifunctional applications including the improvement of soil health and carbon storage, remediation of contaminated soil and water resources, mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions and odorous compounds, and feed supplementation to improve animal health. A healthy soil preserves microbial biodiversity that is effective in supressing plant pathogens and pests, recycling nutrients for plant growth, promoting positive symbiotic associations with plant roots, improving soil structure to supply water and nutrients, and ultimately enhancing soil productivity and plant growth. As a soil amendment, biochar assures soil biological health through different processes. First, biochar supports habitats for microorganisms due to its porous nature and by promoting the formation of stable soil micro-aggregates. Biochar also serves as a carbon and nutrient source. Biochar alters soil physical and chemical properties, creating optimum soil conditions for microbial diversity. Biochar can also immobilize soil pollutants and reduce their bioavailability that would otherwise inhibit microbial growth. However, depending on the pyrolysis settings and feedstock resources, biochar can be comprised of contaminants including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and potentially toxic elements that can inhibit microbial activity, thereby impacting soil health.

Abstract:Engineered biochars are promising candidates in a wide range of environmental applications, including soil fertility improvement, contaminant immobilization, wastewater treatment and in situ carbon sequestration. This review provides a systematic classification of these novel biochar composites and identifies the promising future trends in composite research and application. It is proposed that metals, minerals, layered double hydroxides, carbonaceous nanomaterials and microorganisms enhance the performances of biochars via distinct mechanisms. In this review, four novel trends are identified and assessed critically. Firstly, facile synthesis methods, in particular ball milling and co-pyrolysis, have emerged as popular composite fabrication strategies that are suitable for large-scale applications. Secondly, biochar modification with green materials, such as natural clay minerals and microorganisms, align well with the on-going green and sustainable remediation (GSR) movement. Furthermore, new applications in soil health improvement and climate change mitigation support the realization of United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Finally, the importance of field studies is getting more attention, since evidence of field success is critically needed before large-scale applications.

Abstract:Today our planet is threatened by climate change, degradation of fertile soil (food insecurity), depletion of fossil fuel a combined by greenhouse gas emissions. The persistency of these problems forces scholars finding better solutions. Biochar becomes the prominent material to secure climate change by carbon sequestering, food security by enhancing soil fertility and creates replacement of depleted fossil fuel by bio-oil and syngas. These are achieved by good of biochar in sequestration, higher in surface area, capturing pollutants and other versatile properties. The application of this imminent biochar in Ethiopia is in low level. Even researchers and the government are not evolved and payed attention to it. Generally, the fascinating properties and enormous application of this material needs serious indeed and further researches for clear impact to Ethiopia and other developing countries.

Abstract:We are racing to manage a phenomenally increasing volume of organic wastes from urban, industrial and agricultural entities. Composting is one of the preferred ways to convert biodegradable wastes into nutrient-rich soil conditioners. The age-old technique of composting process is being improved with innovative scientific means. Biochar, a widely studied soil amendment, is a carbonaceous material that can hold nutrients from endogenic/exogenic sources. Biochar-compost, a biochar-complemented compost, may provide a wide range of benefits expected from both materials. Compost and biochar can improve physicochemical and microbiological attributes of soils by supplying labile and stable carbons, and nutrients. Compost may also supply beneficial microbes. This means biochar-compost is a synergic soil amendment that can improve soil quality, increase crop production, and remediate contaminated soils. Having stable carbon, large reactive surface with nutrient loads, biochar can interact widely with organic biomass and modify physicochemical and-microbial states during a composting process while making biochar-compost. Production and application methods of biochar, compost and biochar-compost are covered for agricultural and contaminated soils. Metal and organic contaminations are also discussed. A case study on making and field-testing a mineral-enhanced biochar and a biochar-compost to improve rice yield, is presented at the end. [GRAPHICS] .

Abstract:In recent times, biochar has emerged as a novel approach for environmental remediation due to its exceptional adsorption capacity, attributed to its porous structure formed by the pyrolysis of biomass at elevated temperatures in oxygen-restricted conditions. This characteristic has driven its widespread use in environmental remediation to remove pollutants. When biochar is introduced into ecosystems, it usually changes the makeup of microbial communities by offering a favorable habitat. Its porous structure creates a protective environment that shields them from external pressures. Consequently, microorganisms adhering to biochar surfaces exhibit increased resilience to environmental conditions, thereby enhancing their capacity to degrade pollutants. During this process, pollutants are broken down into smaller molecules through the collaborative efforts of biochar surface groups and microorganisms. Biochar is also often used in conjunction with composting techniques to enhance compost quality by improving aeration and serving as a carrier for slow-release fertilizers. The utilization of biochar to support sustainable agricultural practices and combat environmental contamination is a prominent area of current research. This study aims to examine the beneficial impacts of biochar application on the absorption and breakdown of contaminants in environmental and agricultural settings, offering insights into its optimization for enhanced efficacy.

Abstract:In recent years, soil contamination has become a global environmental problem. Biochar is a porous and carbon-rich material produced from pyrolysis of biomass residues from agricultural and forestry production. It can be used to immobilize heavy metals and organic pollutants in soil through adsorption. Here we report results obtained from our recent studies focusing on the interactions between biochar and soil contaminants. Incubation and pot experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of biochar type, application rate, and particle size on soil properties, bioavailability, mobility, and redistribution of the heavy metals in soil and the accumulation of heavy metals in the plants. Batch equilibration method was used to explore the effect of biochar type, aging process, dosage, and soil organic carbon content on adsorption and desorption of organic pollutants (e.g., phthalic acid esters, or PAEs) in soil. Incubation and pot trials were conducted to evaluate the impact of biochar on the degradation and bioavailability of PAEs in soils. Our results demonstrate that biochar can potentially be used as soil amendment for remediation of soils contaminated with heavy metals and organic pollutants. Abstract:Biomass thermochemical processes result in a common byproduct char. The char is also called biochar particularly when it is used as a soil amendment for soil health improvement. Effective utilization of biochar is critical for improving economic viability and environmental sustainability of biomass thermochemical technologies. Application of biochar for both agricultural and environmental benefits has been studied and reviewed extensively. However, there are limited reviews on other biochar applications, such as for catalysis and adsorption. This paper provides an overview of recent advances in several biochar utilizations including its use as catalyst, soil amendment, fuel cell, contaminant adsorbent, gas storage and activated carbon. Discussions on biochar production methods, properties and advanced characterization techniques are also provided. Biochar is a valuable resource, however, its effective utilization require further investigation of its structure and properties, and methods to modify those.

Abstract:PurposeBiochar, the by-product of thermal decomposition of organic materials in an oxygen-limited environment, is increasingly being investigated due to its potential benefits for soil health, crop yield, carbon (C) sequestration, and greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation.Materials and methodsIn this review, we discuss the potential role of biochar for improving crop yields and decreasing the emission of greenhouse gases, along with the potential risks involved with biochar application and strategies to avoid these risks.Results and discussionBiochar soil amendment improves crop productivity mainly by increasing nutrient use efficiency and water holding capacity. However, improvements to crop production are often recorded in highly degraded and nutrient-poor soils, while its application to fertile and healthy soils does not always increase crop yield. Since biochars are produced from a variety of feedstocks, certain contaminants can be present. Heavy metals in biochar may affect plant growth as well as rhizosphere microbial and faunal communities and functions. Biochar manufacturers should get certification that their products meet International Biochar Initiative (IBI) quality standards (basic utility properties, toxicant assessment, advanced analysis, and soil enhancement properties).ConclusionsThe long-term effects of biochar on soil functions and its fate in different soil types require immediate attention. Biochar may change the soil biological community composition and abundance and retain the pesticides applied. As a consequence, weed control in biochar-amended soils may be difficult as preemergence herbicides may become less effective.
