Abstract:Northern Vietnam is situated on a major route of Pleistocene hominin dispersal in East Asia, and the area's karstic caves preserve many prehistoric shell middens. Fossil and genomic evidence suggest a complex human history in this region and more widely across Southeast Asia and southern China, but related archaeological investigations are hampered by challenging site stratigraphies. Recent investigations of shell middens in other geographical settings have revealed the microstratigraphic complexity of these anthropogenic deposits. But caves promote distinctive site formation processes, while tropical climates may catalyse geomorphic and diagenetic changes. These environmental factors complicate the interpretation of northern Vietnam's shell middens and constraining their effects upon the formation, preservation and destruction of these sites is critical to understanding the archaeology of this region. We examine two archaeological cave sites, dated to the Late Pleistocene and located in the limestone uplands surrounding the Hanoi Basin. Each contains multiple shell midden layers associated with prehistoric occupation and burials. Using thin-section micromorphology (microstratigraphy), we reconstruct the depositional and post-depositional histories of these sites, presenting a geoarchaeological framework of interpretation that is applicable to shell middens in mainland Southeast Asia and tropical zones more widely. This work represents a further step towards improving our understanding of prehistoric human dispersals and adaptations in this region. Abstract:This paper presents the results of geoarchaeological and geochronological investigations at Con Moong Cave, North Vietnam. Beneath the published, terminal Pleistocene sequence, recent excavations have uncovered a similar to 5m stratigraphic sequence containing flaked stone artifacts and sedimentary features that indicate extensive post-depositional change. As the effects of tropical conditions on Pleistocene cave sediments are poorly resolved, a range of complementary techniques was selected to reconstruct the nature of on-site sedimentation and occupation, while assessing the taphonomy of archaeological and palaeoecological materials. Our approach incorporates microstratigraphic, geochemical and sedimentological analyses, using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating to estimate the time of sediment deposition in the cave. This case study has broad application to tropical zones worldwide. Sedimentation began in early Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 4, while micromorphologically observed human occupation commenced before 42 thousand years ago (ka). By placing our results within the context of published, high-resolution regional records of climate, we demonstrate that on-site rhythms of Pleistocene occupation correlated with environmental changes in the region. During MIS 3, episodic abandonment of the site coincided with periods of drier conditions, while rapid climate fluctuations in MIS 2 corresponded with short-lived occupation events and a switch to predominantly geogenic deposition in the cave.

Abstract:The collection of both shaped and unshaped stone tools discovered at Cho Cave during the 2004 excavation has provided new data on an early system of Hoabinhian archaeological sites in northern Vietnam. However, the attributes of unifacial and bifacial flaking techniques in Vietnam and Southeast Asia remain underexplored. This article, in addition to building upon past research data, applies attribute-based research methods to the stone tool assemblage from Pit 3 to investigate the diversity of stone tool production techniques over time. The research findings indicate that from approximately 24,000 to 20,000 cal. BP, both shaped and unshaped tools coexisted. After 20,000 cal. BP, the group of unshaped tools diminished, while the types of shaped tools exhibited greater diversity. The transition from unifacial to bifacial flaking techniques in the shaped tool group is evident at Cho Cave. In the early Holocene, the evolution from flaking techniques to grinding techniques was also recorded. Thus, this study contributes new insights into the emergence of stone tool-making techniques of Hoabinhian residents from the late Pleistocene to the Holocene in Vietnam and Southeast Asia.

Abstract:A series of new heritage discoveries were found during several field-trips from November 2018 to May 2019 in whole area of The Central Highlands with supporting from the project, coded TN17/T06. The most remarkable discoveries are two archaeological sites: The first one is located on Ho Tre crater in Krong Ana district, Dak Lak province and the second one – along the Ba river ancient valley, in Phu Thien district, Gia Lai province. On Ho Tre crater, we collected many types of archaeological artifacts, including stone hand-axes in oval and short shapes, stone cores, flakes, grind-stones, making-fire stones (?), and several broken fragments pieces of pottery, which featured for the shape and technique types in the Neolithic Age. In archaeological sites in Phu Thien district, a series of stone tools, including uni-facial and bi-facial tools, rough-cutting tools such as side-chopper, end-chopper scrapers, spearhead tools, flake tools, etc., characterized as the shape and technique types in duration the Paleolithic Age were found. These findings play an important role in science to clarify development process of human history since pre-history up to now in Vietnam and in the region as well. Moreover, it is more significant to possibly establish a conservation strategy and to locally develop tourism. The Sa Huynh Culture and Related Cultures in Southern Vietnam and Cambodia

Abstract:Over the last decades, numerous excavations in central and southern Vietnam as at the lowland plains near the coast as in the mountainous interior allow a more detailed perspective on the origin, characteristics, development, and expansion of the Sa Huynh culture and related jar burial communities dated into the last centuries BC. Attention is also given to the pre-Funan population between the Angkor region and the Mekong Delta during the Late Bronze and Early Iron Age (end of the second millennium BC to the beginning of the first century AD). Despite accepting that the cultures around the South China Sea influenced each other by trade or people’s movement, an indigenous origin of different jar burial cultures in Vietnam is suggested. By considering the artifacts of the Iron Age Sa Huynh culture in three stages, migrations and distinct time spans of local groups are visible. For the Mekong Delta and Cambodia, the focus is oriented to funeral practices and technical innovations, especially the beginning of preindustrial salt production and local goldworking.
SHOULDERED ADZES, BIFACES, AND CHERT PRISMS: A CHARACTERIZATION OF MIMOTIEN STONE TOOL ASSEMBLAGES FROM LATER CAMBODIAN PREHISTORY

Abstract:Mimotien circular earthworks in the red soil area of east Cambodia and southern Vietnam (Anonymous 1930; Malleret 1959; Groslier 1966 a, b) are dated to the end of the Neolithic and the beginning of the Metal Age with the settlements ending in the second half of the first millennium BC (Haidle 2001). Fifty-six of these very homogeneous settlement sites with outer wall, inner ditch and central platform have been recorded so far (Nguyen 1984, 1997, 1999; Luong 1985; Nguyen 1986; Kojo and Pheng 1997; Dega 2002; Thuy 2002; Haidle 2006), of which Krek 52/62, in Ponhea Krek district, Kampong Cham province, Cambodia, is the most intensively examined (Dega et al. 1997; Kojo and Peng 1998; Albrecht et al. 2000; Vin 2003). A total area of 100 m2 has been excavated there between 1997 and 2004 by a GermanCambodian team from Tubingen University, Royal University of Fine Arts Phnom Penh and Memot Centre for Archaeology. Artefacts are concentrated on the edge of the inner platform. These include pottery, spindle whorls and other ceramic artefacts (Heng and Som 1999; Haidle et al. submitted) as well as fragments of glass bangles (Haidle 2001; Haidle and Neumann 2004) and an abundance of lithic artefacts. Some hundred stone tools in different stages of their artefact life, from blanks to finally discarded pieces, have been discovered together with debris from production and reworking. The lithic inventories of this (Heng and Mao 1999) and other Mimotien earthworks (Chhor et al. 1999; Thuy 1999; Dega 2002) present a diverse picture of raw materials (Neumann and Haidle 2002), tool types, production modes, and functions.

THE DISCOVERY OF A BIFACIAL INDUSTRY IN VIETNAM

Abstract:This study deals with the origin of bifacial industry in the Lower Paleolithic of Southeast Asia. We describe stone tools from the stratifi ed sites of Goda and Rocktyng near the town of Ankhe, Vietnam. The lithics represent a homogeneous industry characterized by uniform Lower Paleolithic techniques of primary and secondary reduction. Cores and tools were made of pebbles, and some tools were manufactured on fl akes. The tool-kit includes bifaces, pics, becs, carinate end-scrapers, various types of side-scrapers, choppers and chopping tools, denticulate and notched pieces. Bifaces and pics are the principal types. Primary reduction was aimed at manufacturing simple pebble cores with cortex striking platforms, whereas radial and orthogonal cores are less frequent. Tektites found with the lithics were dated by 40K/38Ar-method to 806±22 and 782±20 ka BP. We propose to name this industry the Ankhe culture. It likely emerged by convergent evolution of the pebble-fl ake industry associated with the fi rst wave of Homo erectus migration from Africa 1.8–1.6 million years BP, and is unrelated to the Acheulean tradition introduced by the second migration wave from Africa.
Relationship between South China and Vietnam : Technology, Function and Distribution of Jade Stone Ornaments (40周年記念号)

Abstract:Introduction: The practice of ring ornament making in China began over 5,000 years ago during the early Neolithic period. In Yangshao culture and Longshan culture, in the midstream of the Yellow River, these ring ornaments are made from stone and two varieties of Jade: jadeite and nephrite. Nephrite was the most commonly used, and its value depended more on the quality of artistry involved in the shaping and the carving of it, than on the actual stone itself. Most of the jade used in China prior to the 17th and 18th centuries was nephrite. In this article, “jade” refers to nephrite. Many jades were excavated from various manufacture sites. Here, I will analyze the relationship between various cultures based on the technology and function of the artifacts. I will focus on three elements: stone tools, uncompleted products, and completed products.

Abstract:The effectiveness of using a groundwater geochemistry approach in karst hydrogeologic research is highlighted. In particular, this approach is useful for preliminary investigations, such as for the study described here on the Dong Van karst aquifer system in Northern Vietnam. Analyses of different groundwater chemistry parameters complement each other, to clarify hydrochemical processes that are occurring in the karst system. The results of this study show that major ion composition can be used to clarify water chemistry signatures, as well as to identify the mixing processes and water–rock interactions in aquifers. Meanwhile, trace element concentrations and rare earth element patterns can be used as potential natural tracers when some processes are not revealed through conventional hydrochemical methods. These natural tracers can also be used to identify contaminant sources and/or contaminant transport pathways in karst aquifers. Viewed holistically, the groundwater geochemistry approach provides scientific information to establish a basic hydrogeological conceptual model and to estimate the water balance, which has implications for water resources protection and management in karstic systems.

Abstract:Ground stone tools were a revolutionary technology that appeared during the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene periods and played a key role in the economic and ritual activities of many prehistoric and early historic societies. Previous functional analyses of ground stone tools in China have focused primarily on Neolithic materials and had a regional preference for northern China. This article reports on the results of a functional study of an assemblage of ground stone tools found at the Dingjiacun site in southern China. Use-wear analysis was adopted to interpret the tools' function through observing and identifying the wear patterns that corresponded to different substantial activities. Our results showed that the site once contained a settled agricultural community where a large array of activities such as wood-working, harvesting, earth-working, and hunting were carried out. The results of our study should provide a better understanding of human behaviors and subsistence strategies in the Lower Yangtze River region during the Bronze Age.

Abstract:Abstract The establishment of a connection to sustainability is evident through the expansion of the Global Geoparks network and geotourism initiatives, emphasizing the protection of geodiversity alongside biodiversity conservation. The outcomes of the geosite inventory laid the foundation for the development of the geopark. In the South-Central Coast of Vietnam, characterized by its small and narrow area, intricate tectonic structure, distinctive topography, and unique climate, where conservation efforts are yet to be initiated, the geosite inventory assumes particular significance. The geosite inventory was conducted using four research approaches, which are as follows: 1) Studying documents on geosite inventory, geological and geomorphological investigation documents; 2) Field survey; 3) Expert methods and 4) GIS techniques. The results of the inventory demonstrate how diverse the geosite types and geometries are along Vietnam South-Central Coast. The research findings reveal a total of 90 geosites distributed among 10 geo-theme groups, categorized into 5 types: area, section, point, viewpoint, and complex. These geosites align with 5 primary scientific interests, encompassing tectonics, lithology stratigraphy, hydrology, and geomorphology. Notably, three distinct tectonic units characterize the geosites, with the Kon Tum massif exhibiting the highest number and diversity. Across the eight provinces/cities along the South-Central coast, all are endowed with rare or precious geosites. Despite Ninh Thuan province’s arid climate, it boasts a notable count of 16 geosites. In contrast, Quang Nam province has the fewest geosites (only 6), while other provinces range between 8 and 13 geosites. Remarkably, three provinces – Quang Nam, Khanh Hoa, and Binh Thuan – showcase geosites of all five types.
Behavioral modernity and variability of late Late Pleistocene humans in South China: A case study of Diaotonghuan in Wannian, Jiangxi Province

Abstract:Diaotonghuan is a rock shelter located in the limestone hills of the southwestern Dayuan basin in Wannian County,Jiangxi Province.The Diaotonghuan site was excavated in 1993,1995 and 1999.Thousands of stone artifacts that include both flake and pebble tools were found during the excavations.A large number of antler and bone tools,as well as shell knives,were also found,and fireplaces and occupation surfaces were uncovered in different cultural horizons.The diversity of the finds indicates that the rock shelter had been used by Late Pleistocene hunter-gatherers for a variety of activities,including base camps,stone workshops,animal butchery,etc.in the late Late Pleistocene.The research at Diaotonghuan is significant as it opens a new window for examining the diversity of modern human behaviour in the Late Pleistocene of South China.
An Experimental Investigation of the Ground Stone Knives and Sickles in the Lower Yangtze River Region During the Late Neolithic and Bronze Age

Abstract:Ground stone knives and sickles were important implements in the Lower Yangtze River Region during the Late Neolithic and Bronze Age. Previous studies had suggested that harvesting gramineous plants such as rice was probably one of their functions, but there is very few empirical evidence of whether these tools were used and how. In this study, a set of replicative experiments were carried out to examine their effectiveness as harvesting tools and use-wear analysis was adopted to determine the multi-stage formation process of the use-wear traces on tool's surface. The results showed that the knives and sickles were efficient for rice harvesting when used in proper working motions. The use-wear patterns generated by rice harvesting are dominated by bright domed polish linked in reticulated patches often accompanied by fine striations. The distribution of the polish and its morphological characteristics are influenced by working motion, use intensity, and the nature of the stone raw material in varying degrees. The results of our study provide significant reference data and images for deciphering the functions of stone knives and sickles in archaeological records, which are crucial for investigating the development of rice farming agriculture in the Lower Yangtze River Region during the Late Neolithic and Bronze Age.
Enhancing hydrological insight: isotopic methods revealing groundwater-surface water interactions in the Lower Quang Tri River Group, Vietnam

Abstract:The Lower Quang Tri River Group, situated in central Vietnam, faces a myriad of challenges, notably the decline in groundwater levels and the salinisation of both groundwater and surface water, significantly impacting water availability for domestic, agricultural, and industrial purposes. To address these pressing concerns, this study adopts a comprehensive methodology integrating hydrogeological measurements, isotopic techniques, and chemical analyses of various water sources, including local precipitation, surface water bodies, reservoirs, and groundwater samples. Utilising the deuterium and oxygen-18 signatures (δ2H and δ18O) in water molecules as environmental tracers for the assessment of base flow and water sources enables a nuanced understanding of the intricate interaction between surface water and groundwater. Research findings elucidate that during the dry season, groundwater recharge primarily stems from water in the reservoirs over approximately seven months. Base flow contributes between 80 and 85 % of streamflow during the rainy season, escalating to 100 % during the dry season. The mean travelling time of the base flow is estimated at 120 ± 10 days using the sine curve model developed by Rodgers et al. The insights gleaned from this study are poised to play a pivotal role in guiding the local water resources managers in licensing for the exploitation of a right quantities of groundwater as sustainable management strategies in the region.
[Voyage to Bahnars country, people living in the high plateaus of central Vietnam]

Abstract:Southeast Asia was born from the collision between the Indian subcontinent and mainland China. Vietnam owes its 54 ethnic groups and four languages to a succession of migrations over the milleniums. The high plateaus are inhabited by a multitude of small ethnic groups commonly referred to as the "Moi". Vietnamity and the Association for Aid to the Ethnic Minorities of Vietnam are dedicated to developing and implementing cooperative projects with Vietnam. Living in the remote hinterland, the now less than one million mountain people of the High Plateaus were untouched by Indian and Chinese influences and remained independent until French colonisation which had only minor effects on their culture. During an expedition to the high plateaus, a privileged group sent by Vietenamity encountered one of these peoples, the Bahnars. In the context of a village festival, the authors describe the traditional way of life and beliefs of the Bahnar people.

Abstract:The objectives of this research are to study the current status of the earthenware production profession, develop and disseminate knowledge gained from research about the cultural landscape network of Khmer-culture ceramics, and promote the exchange of knowledge in Khmer-culture ceramic production between Thailand and the Kingdom of Cambodia. The ultimate goal is to transfer the research findings into practical applications for both commercial and public benefits. The results of the research study have provided insights into the characteristics, patterns, and motifs of Khmer-inspired glazed ceramics in Thailand. Through the collection and study of various relevant data related to Khmer-inspired glazed ceramics, the wares used in Khmer-style glazed ceramics can be broadly categorized into two main groups based on their usage. The first group includes wares used in daily life, such as earthen jars, pots, cassettes, bottles, bowls, water pots with spouts, animal sculptures, and jewelry. The second group consists of wares used on special occasions or in religious ceremonies, such as fish and conch objects. Both groups of glazed ceramics are classified as stoneware fired at high temperatures. The cultural landscape network of Khmer-culture ceramics has identified three groups of pottery producers in present-day Cambodia. These groups are 1) the National Center for Khmer Ceramics Revival (NCKCR), 2) the Kampong Chhnang Ceramic Artisans Group, and 3) the Siem Reap Mordock Ceramics Group. To facilitate the transfer of professional skills in Khmer ceramics, training and skill-sharing programs have been established in designated locations in Thailand, specifically at the Department of Ceramics Technology, Faculty of Industrial Technology, Buriram Rajabhat University, and in Cambodia at the Siem Reap Mordock Ceramics Group. These practical training programs cover the entire process of Khmer-style glazed ceramic production, including soil preparation, shaping, decorative techniques, glazing, and firing. A collaborative work evaluation and a summary of the training results are conducted together. After conducting training workshops to transfer knowledge and skills in the pottery profession, the research team presented the outcomes of the training in three locations in Thailand, namely, the exhibition "Millennium Porcelain Fair, Ban Kruat Tradition" in Ban Kruat District, Buriram Province, "Bond Klay Keramic: International Ceramic Art Workshop & Conference 2017" at Ruen Thai, Valaya Alongkorn Rajabhat University under the Royal Patronage, Khlong Luang District, Pathum Thani Province, and "Exhibition at RMA Gallery Sukhumvit Soi 22, Bangkok." In Cambodia, the works were showcased at the Angkor Handicraft Association (AHA) in Siem Reap, Kingdom of Cambodia. Both exhibitions received significant interest from the visitors, contributing to the international recognition and dissemination of the creative ceramic works resulting from the cultural landscape network of Khmer-culture ceramics.
Traditional creativity in the practice of Chol Chnam Thmay festival of Khmer people in Loc Ninh district, Binh Phuoc province, Vietnam today

Abstract:Chol Chnam Thmay is one of the typical traditional festivals of Khmer people living in Loc Ninh in the Southeastern region of Vietnam as well as in the Mekong Delta in the Southwestern region of Vietnam and in some other Southeast Asian countries. Similar to Khmer people in other regions, festivals of Khmer people in Loc Ninh are also formed and integrated from three cultural lines: folk beliefs, Brahminism, and Buddhism. However, due to the peculiarities of natural conditions, and historical and social circumstances, Khmer people’s festivals in Loc Ninh have specific cultural features, which have contributed to the formation and development of the Khmer ethnic identity in Loc Ninh as well as the cultural identity of the Southeastern region of Vietnam. Based on Hobsbawm's theoretical approach to “Traditional Creativity”, combining Ethnographic/Anthropological field methods, the research results show that Chol Chnam Thmay festival of the Khmer people in Loc Ninh has had a lot of changes. The the changes of the festival is the consequence of the “Traditional Creativity” process in the restoration and practice of the Khmer community's festival. In addition to the impact of the natural environment, and historical and social circumstances, these changes are also affected by cultural exchange factors, globalization, integration, and especially, impacts from the policies on socio-economic and cultural development of the Vietnamese Communist Party and State implemented in localities in the Southeastern region of Vietnam at present.

Geochronology and geochemistry of the PiaOac granites: Implication for Late Cretaceous magmatism and metallogeny in NE Vietnam

Abstract:Sn-W deposits have recently been found in NE Vietnam, which has been considered as southwestern extension of the South China Block. The timing and relationships between the Sn-W mineralization and associated granitic magmatism in this area have not been well understood. This study presents new zircon and cassiterite U-Pb geochronology, whole-rock geochemistry, and zircon Hf-isotope data for the PiaOac granites, greisens, and cassiterite veins in NE Vietnam. The PiaOac granites are characterized by high Na2O+K2O, and K2O/Na2O, and low Fe2O3T and Mg#. The presence of primary muscovite, and high A/CNK (1.23-1.26), Rb/Sr (20-25), and P2O5 (0.33-0.35%) suggest that they are strongly peraluminous S-type granites. Low K/Rb, Zr/Hf, Nb/Ta, and Eu/Eu* indicate that the granitic magma experienced strong fractional crystallization. The PiaOac granites have homogeneous zircon Hf-isotope compositions with average εHf(t) values of -9.6 to -8.7 and two-stage Hf model ages of 1.76-1.71 Ga. They probably were sourced from Neoproterozoic metasedimentary rocks with late Paleoproterozoic model ages in NE Vietnam. Low CaO/Na2O (<0.3) and high Rb/Sr and Rb/Ba ratios further suggest a clay-rich pelitic source. Zircons from greisen have significantly unradiogenic Hf-isotope compositions (εHf (t) = -12.2) and large variations, implying strong interaction with wall rocks in late fluid-rich stage during magmatic evolution. Extended magmatic differentiation was followed by interaction with wall rocks, which has altered the redox environment, facilitating the Sn-W mineralization.Zircon U-Pb dating results reveal that the PiaOac granites formed in the Late Cretaceous (89-88 Ma), coincident with the ∼89 Ma mineralization constrained by cassiterite U-Pb dating, suggesting that the Sn-W mineralization is closely related to the granitic magmatism and greisenization. Late Cretaceous magmatism and mineralization in NE Vietnam are similar to those in SW South China in terms of formation age, rock association, deposit type, source composition, and tectonic setting, all together constituting an E-W trending Late Cretaceous metallogenic belt. The Late Cretaceous granites and associated deposits in the belt were probably formed in an intracontinental orogenic setting in response to the combined action of the subduction of Pacific and Neo-Tethys Plates.

Abstract:The Late Pleistocene is a crucial period of dramatic changes in lithic technologies as well as interactions between modern humans and other archaic human groups. In this paper, we describe the technological analysis of lithic assemblages collected from 28 newly discovered Paleolithic sites along the Daoshui River, a tributary of the Lishui River (itself a tributary of Yangtze River) in northern Hunan Province, central South China. Luminescence dating of several sites in this region has provided a general Late Pleistocene age range for lithic assemblages. Technologically, high quality raw materials are predominantly exploited (e.g., chert and siliceous slate) and direct hard hammer percussion predominates which lacks the classic Levallois technology though conceptually, some specimens do exhibit a certain degree of volumetric control and share other common features with prepared cores, here we tentatively define them as “simply prepared cores.” Small flakes and flake tool production plays a primary role in the overall technological strategy, accompanying a small proportion of large flakes and Large Cutting Tools production. Our examination of lithic technologies in the region clearly contrasts with the traditional view of South China being characterized by a simple cobble tool industry over the course of the Pleistocene period. We further discuss the issue of the Middle Paleolithic in China, as well as the ecological adaptations of hominins in the Daoshui River valley within a Late Pleistocene climatic context.
Rice use history in Southeast China: Phytolith evidence from the Nanshan site in Fujian Province

Abstract:The southern spread of rice agriculture is of great academic interest. Although it already has a broad chronological framework, newly introduced rice use and its impact on local subsistence and ecological systems are still unclear. In this study, we explore these issues by analysing phytoliths recovered from continuous sediments of Cave No. 4 at the Nanshan site in Fujian Province, together with evidence from surrounding sites. The results show that rice was introduced into southeast China at 7,500 cal. yr BP, but the dominance of the hunting-gathering system was not challenged until later, between 5,000 and 3,500 cal. yr BP, when cultivation of rice, together with foxtail and broomcorn millets, was widely practiced in the region. This suggests that mixed farming in Southeast China, likely originating around the middle Yangtze River, became widespread and gradually systematic during the previous two-millennium adoption. This rice-millet mixed agricultural system changed the former hunting-gathering subsistence system, promoting the agriculturalization process, cultural prosperity and population growth, thus providing a solid basis for rice expansion and cultural migration to Southeast Asia.
