Abstract:The unique point of non-Hermitian degeneracy in an open system, known as exceptional point (EP), holds great potential in cavity quantum electrodynamics, optical signal processing, and sensing applications. For on-chip miniaturized optical cavities, auxiliary means have been employed for steering a non-Hermitian system to an EP, which typically requires either precision post-fabrication tuning or external off-chip components. Here we report a route of engineering non-Hermitian degeneracies in spiral ring microcavities without any external or temporary assistance. In such a deformed whispering gallery mode cavity which can be readily obtained through the self-rolling of pre-strained nanomembranes, the coupling strength of original non-degenerate modes can be fine tailored by spiral edge-induced backscatterings. Our theoretical results suggest that an EP can be reached by adjusting the physical scales and relative positions of inner and outer spiral edges. For EP-enhanced sensing, a functional regime upon a tiny perturbation where splitting scales as the square root of the perturbation and a saturated regime upon a sufficiently large perturbation are distinguished. For EPs in such a single-resonator system, the enhanced sensitivity towards localized perturbations and robustness towards homogeneous perturbations are desirable for single-molecule detections. We expect that this work will serve as a generic guideline for realizing compact EP-empowered sensing systems and provide new insights into ultra-sensitive bioanalyses.

Abstract:Abstract Exceptional points (EPs) have recently emerged as a new method for engineering the response of open physical systems, that is, systems that interact with the environment. The systems at the EPs exhibit a strong response to a small perturbation. Here, we show a method by which the sensitivity of silicon resonant sensors can be enhanced when operated at EPs. In our experiments, we use a pair of mechanically coupled silicon micromechanical resonators constituting a parity–time (PT)-symmetric dimer. Small perturbations introduced on the mechanically coupled spring cause the frequency to split from the EPs into the PT-symmetric regime without broadening the two spectrum linewidths, and this frequency splitting scales with the square root of the perturbation strength. The overall signal-to-noise ratio is still greatly enhanced, although the measured noise spectral density of the EP sensing scheme has a slight increase comparable to the traditional counterpart. Our results pave the way for resonant sensors with ultrahigh sensitivity.

Abstract:Magnon-polaritons are hybrid light-matter quasiparticles originating from the strong coupling between magnons and photons. They have emerged as a potential candidate for implementing quantum transducers and memories. Owing to the dampings of both photons and magnons, the polaritons have limited lifetimes. However, stationary magnon-polariton states can be reached by a dynamical balance between pumping and losses, so the intrinsically nonequilibrium system may be described by a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. Here we design a tunable cavity quantum electrodynamics system with a small ferromagnetic sphere in a microwave cavity and engineer the dissipations of photons and magnons to create cavity magnon-polaritons which have non-Hermitian spectral degeneracies. By tuning the magnon-photon coupling strength, we observe the polaritonic coherent perfect absorption and demonstrate the phase transition at the exceptional point. Our experiment offers a novel macroscopic quantum platform to explore the non-Hermitian physics of the cavity magnon-polaritons.
Exceptional point enhances sensitivity of optomechanical mass sensors

Abstract:We propose an efficient optomechanical mass sensor operating at exceptional points (EPs), non-hermitian degeneracies where eigenvalues of a system and their corresponding eigenvectors simultaneously coalesce. The benchmark system consists of two optomechanical cavities (OMCs) that are mechanically coupled, where we engineer mechanical gain (loss) by driving the cavity with a blue (red) detuned laser. The system features EP at the gain and loss balance, where any perturbation induces a frequency splitting that scales as the square-root of the perturbation strength, resulting in a giant sensitivity factor enhancement compared to the conventional optomechanical sensors. For non-degenerated mechanical resonators, quadratic optomechanical coupling is used to tune the mismatch frequency in order to get closer to the EP, extending the efficiency of our sensing scheme to mismatched resonators. This work paves the way towards new levels of sensitivity for optomechanical sensors, which could find applications in many other fields including nanoparticles detection, precision measurement, and quantum metrology.

Abstract:We propose an optomechanical nano-gravimeter based on exceptional points. The system is a coupled cavity optomechanical system, in which the gain and loss are applied by driving the cavities with a blue detuned and red detuned electromagnetic field, respectively. When the gain and loss reach a balance, the system will show the degeneracy of exceptional points, and any perturbation will cause an eigenfrequencies split, which is proportional to the square root of the perturbation strength. Compared with the traditional optomechanical sensors, the sensitivity is greatly enhanced. This work paves the way for the design of optomechanical ultrasensitive force sensors that can be applied to detect non-Newtonian effects, high-order weak interactions, and so on.

Abstract:Singularities in the spectra of open systems,known as exceptional points(EPs),have been shown to exhibit non-trivial topological properties and enhanced sensitivities.Here,we propose a novel approach to realize the EPs in a plasmon-exciton hybrid system and explore their applications in enhanced nanoscale sensing technology.We consider a plasmon-exciton system composed of a gold nanorod and a monolayer WSe2.By controlling the geometric parameters of the nano-hybrid system,we obtain simultaneous coalescence of the resonance frequencies and loss rates of the hybrid system,which is a unique feature of EPs.Numerical simulations show its application in enhanced nanoscale sensing for environmental refractive indices.Our work opens the way to a new class of sensors based on EP-enhanced sensing,with intrinsic nanoscale sensitivity due to the sub-diffraction-limit size of the plasmon-exciton nano-hybrid system.
Sensing with exceptional surfaces: combining sensitivity with robustness

Abstract:Exceptional points (EPs) are singularities that arise in non-Hermitian physics. Current research efforts focus only on systems supporting isolated EPs characterized by increased sensitivity to external perturbations, which makes them potential candidates for building next generation optical sensors. On the downside, this feature is also the Achilles heel of these devices: they are very sensitive to fabrication errors and experimental uncertainties. To overcome this problem, we introduce a new design concept for implementing photonic EPs that combine the robustness required for practical use together with their hallmark sensitivity. Particularly, our proposed structure exhibits a hypersurface of Jordan EPs (JEPs) embedded in a larger space, and having the following peculiar features: (1) A large class of undesired perturbations shift the operating point along the exceptional surface (ES), thus leaving the system at another EP which explains the robustness; (2) Perturbations due to back reflection/scattering force the operating point out of the ES, leading to enhanced sensitivity. Importantly, our proposed geometry is relatively easy to implement using standard photonics components and the design concept can be extended to other physical platforms such as microwave or acoustics.

Abstract:By preparing a sensor system around isolated exceptional points, one can obtain a great enhancement of the sensitivity benefiting from the non-Hermiticity. However, this comes at the cost of reduction of the flexibility of the system, which is critical for practical applications. By generalizing the exceptional points to exceptional surfaces, it has been theoretically proposed recently that enhanced sensitivity and flexibility can be combined. Here, we experimentally demonstrate an exceptional surface in a non-Hermitian photonic sensing system, which is composed of a whispering-gallery-mode microresonator and two nanofiber waveguides, resulting in a unidirectional coupling between two degenerate counter-propagating modes with an external optical isolator. The system is simple, robust, and can be easily operated around an exceptional surface. On the one hand, we observe sensitivity enhancement by monitoring the resonant frequency splitting caused by small perturbations. This demonstration of exceptional-surface-enhanced sensitivity paves the way for practical non-Hermitian sensing applications. On the other hand, we also show the suppression of frequency splitting around the exceptional surface for the first time.

Abstract:An optical microcavity provides a prominent platform for single-nanoparticle detection with ultrahigh sensitivity. Recently, microcavity sensors working at the exceptional point have caught great attention due to their ability to enhance sensitivity, but suffer from simultaneously amplified noise. Here, we propose employing a nonlinear microcavity to enhance the sensitivity of single-nanoparticle detection based on spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking. It is found that sensors operating at the symmetry-breaking threshold experience a gigantic enhancement in sensitivity, which is caused by the square-root response to perturbation in a lossless microcavity. Through the analysis for a realistic microcavity, a 30-fold sensitivity enhancement is demonstrated by working at the threshold, and the enhancement is also confirmed by numerical simulation. Furthermore, the noise performance is analyzed to be superior in thermorefractive noise and quantum noise performance in comparison to a conventional microcavity-sensing scheme. Merging the spontaneous chiral symmetry-breaking effect with practical sensing applications, the results pave a universal way for high-performance microcavity sensing with enhanced sensitivity and reduced noise.

Abstract:The emergence of exceptional points in a non-Hermitian system has provided intriguing possibilities to enhance the sensitivity of a sensor, while it is yet a considerable challenge to implement subwavelength non-Hermitian systems. One possible solution to tackle this challenge is to take advantage of localized surface plasmon resonances, which enable large electromagnetic enhancement at the subwavelength scale. In this work, a novel sensing scheme based on the exceptional points in a spoof plasmonic structure working at microwave frequencies is proposed. It is shown that near-field plasmonic vortices can be efficiently generated at the exceptional points, resulting in the enhanced sensitivity when detecting a single particle or fluid analytes. Single particle detection with the particle size as small as 1/100 of the operating wavelength is reported. For liquid analysis in the microfluidic system, the sample consumption is down to 0.72 & mu;L. This work demonstrates the ultrahigh sensitivity of exceptional-point-based plasmonic sensing and opens up new possibilities for subwavelength and compact sensors operating in the microwave, terahertz, and even far-infrared regions.

Abstract:Abstract Exceptional points (EPs) as branch singularities describe peculiar degeneracies of non-Hermitian systems, widely studied in topological and non-topological optical architectures with introducing gain or loss technically. This work focuses on the EPs in a topological waveguide (TW)-cavity coupled structure, where there is no need to introduce practical gain or loss. The topological cavity contains two degenerate counter-propagation topological whispering gallery modes, whose coupling with the TW leads to the effective gain and loss, responsible for the EP. Such a photonic architecture is designed practically by crystal-symmetry-protected topological photonic insulators based on air rods in conventional dielectric materials. The relevant EP reveals the breaking of the parity-time symmetry, reflected by the change of the transmission-dip number in the optical transmission spectra of the system. Achieving EPs in topological photonic systems possibly opens a new avenue toward robust optical devices with exceptional-point-based unique properties and functionalities.

Abstract:Optical sensors, crucial in diverse fields like gravitational wave detection, biomedical imaging, and structural health monitoring, rely on optical phase to convey valuable information. Enhancing sensitivity is important for detecting weak signals. Exceptional points (EPs), identified in non-Hermitian systems, offer great potential for advanced sensors, given their marked response to perturbations. However, strict physical requirements for operating a sensor at EPs limit broader applications. Here, we introduce an EP-enhanced sensing platform featuring plug-in external sensors separated from an EP control unit. EPs are achieved without modifying the sensor, solely through control-unit adjustments. This configuration converts and amplifies optical phase changes into quantifiable spectral features. By separating sensing and control functions, we expand the applicability of EP enhancement to various conventional sensors. As a proof-of-concept, we demonstrate a sixfold reduction in the detection limit of fiber-optic strain sensing using this configuration. This work establishes a universal platform for applying EP enhancement to diverse phase-dependent structures, promising ultrahigh-sensitivity sensing across various applications.

Abstract:Optical microcavity has proven its potential for unlabeled sensing. Here, we propose and demonstrate in a lithium niobate on insulator microcavity an enhanced sensing approach enabled by the nonlinear mode oscillation generated by the competition between thermal-optic and photorefractive effect, which breaks the intrinsic limitation in wavelength resolution set by the cavity's optical quality factor. It allows us to perform precise measurements of the mode shifting introduced by a nanoscale scatterer with a signal to noise ratio of 13.1 dB and paves a distinctive way to improve resonance shift resolution in widely studied microcavity sensors with a platform of great integration capability.

Abstract:Based on the dispersive interaction between a high quality factor microcavity and nano-objects, whisperinggallery-mode microcavities have been widely used in highly sensitive sensing. Here, we propose a novel method to enhance the sensitivity of the optical frequency shift and reduce the impact of the laser frequency noise on the detection resolution through Brillouin cavity optomechanics in a parity-time symmetric system. The optical spring effect is sensitive to the perturbation of optical modes around the exceptional point. By monitoring the shift of the mechanical frequency, the detection sensitivity for the optical frequency shift is enhanced by 2 orders of magnitude compared with conventional approaches. We find the optical spring effect is robust to the laser frequency noise around the exceptional point, which can reduce the detection limitation caused by the laser frequency instability. Thus, our method can improve the sensing ability for nano-object sensing and other techniques based on the frequency shift of the optical mode.

Abstract:Exceptional points in non-Hermitian systems have attracted considerable attention due to their novel applications in several fields such as optics, electronics, and mechanics. Typically, exceptional points are constructed through gain and loss modulation or dissipative coupling within the framework of parity-time symmetry or anti-parity-time symmetry. Recent demonstration of unidirectional coupling in optical resonators to create exceptional points has offered an alternative approach. This study extends this concept to electronic circuits, examining exceptional points that emerge in unidirectionally coupled LC circuits. We show that this circuit undergoes resonance frequency splitting that exhibits either linear or square-root scaling with the strength of the applied perturbation. We further explore the circuit's scattering properties when connected to an input-output channel and demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally the splitting of transmission dips or peaks when a perturbation is applied-highlighting the potential for building sensors with enhanced sensitivity. This work not only deepens the understanding of exceptional points in electronic circuits but also encourages the exploration and application of non-Hermiticity in electronics.
Exceptional surface-enhanced Rotation Sensing with Robustness in an optical microcavity

Abstract:Exceptional points (EPs) are special singularities of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. At an EP, two or more eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenstates coalesce. Recently, EP-based optical gyroscope near an EP was extensively investigated to improve the response to rotation. However, the highly resultant dimensionality in the eigenstate space causing from the EP-based system is sensitivity to more external perturbations, that is, the great response at EPs requires strict implementation conditions. To solve this problem, a new non-Hermitian structure was proposed that realizes an exceptional surface (EP surface) constructed of numerous EPs embedded in a high-dimensional parameter space. With respect to the isolated EPs, non-Hermitian EP surface provides additional degrees of freedom to permit the undesired perturbations (such as fabrication errors) shifts along the EP surface which corresponds to the robustness. On the other hand, the rotation will force the system away from these EPs obtaining a sensitivity enhancement of three orders of magnitude, compared to the traditional Sagnac effect rotation detecting. The EP surface system has a potential to combine robustness with enhanced sensitivity of the rotation.

Biosensing Near the Exceptional Point Based on Resonant Optical Tunneling Effect

Abstract:Inspired by exceptional point (EP) sensing in non-Hermitian systems, in this work, a label-free biosensor for detecting low-concentration analytes is proposed, via a special multilayer structure: a resonant optical tunneling resonator. Due to the square root topology near the exceptional point, a recognized target analyte perturbs the system deviated from the exceptional point, leading to resolvable modes splitting in the transmission spectrum. The performance of the designed sensor is analyzed by the coupled-mode theory and transfer matrix method, separately. Here, the simulation results demonstrate that the obtained sensitivity is 17,120 nm/imaginary part unit of refractive index (IP) and the theoretical detection limit is 4.2 × 10−8 IP (regarding carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), the minimum detection value is 1.78 ng). Instead of the typical diffusion manner, the liquid sample is loaded by convection, which can considerably improve the efficiency of sample capture and shorten the response time of the sensor. The sketched sensor may find potential application in the fields of biomedical detection, environment protection, and drinking water safety.

Abstract:We observe the crossing and anti-crossing behaviors of nearly degenerate mode pairs in a rolled-up tubular microcavity, which can be explained by weak and strong couplings between the modes. Exceptional points (EPs) are thus obtained in the tubular microcavity since they are the critical point where a transition from strong to weak coupling occurs. Rolled-up tubular microcavities with a given resonant mode approaching an EP in parameter space expanded by two continuous variables are also realized without using near-field probes. Microcavities with EPs prepared in a rolled-up way could be mechanically stable and would be used for optofluidic detection.

Abstract:We propose to realize the pseudo-Hermiticity in a cavity magnonics system consisting of the Kittel modes in two small yttrium-iron-garnet spheres coupled to a microwave cavity mode. The effective gain of the cavity can be achieved using the coherent perfect absorption of the two input fields fed into the cavity. With certain constraints of the parameters, the Hamiltonian of the system has the pseudo-Hermiticity and its eigenvalues can be either all real or one real and other two constituting a complex-conjugate pair. By varying the coupling strengths between the two Kittel modes and the cavity mode, we find the existence of the third-order exceptional point in the parameter space, in addition to the usual second-order exceptional point existing in the system with parity-time symmetry. Also, we show that these exceptional points can be demonstrated by measuring the output spectrum of the cavity.
