Abstract:Laser cooling and trapping 1,2 , and magneto-optical trapping methods in particular 2 , have enabled groundbreaking advances in science, including Bose–Einstein condensation 3,4,5 , quantum computation with neutral atoms 6,7 and high-precision optical clocks 8 . Recently, magneto-optical traps (MOTs) of diatomic molecules have been demonstrated 9,10,11,12 , providing access to research in quantum simulation 13 and searches for physics beyond the standard model 14 . Compared with diatomic molecules, polyatomic molecules have distinct rotational and vibrational degrees of freedom that promise a variety of transformational possibilities. For example, ultracold polyatomic molecules would be uniquely suited to applications in quantum computation and simulation 15,16,17 , ultracold collisions 18 , quantum chemistry 19 and beyond-the-standard-model searches 20,21 . However, the complexity of these molecules has so far precluded the realization of MOTs for polyatomic species. Here we demonstrate magneto-optical trapping of a polyatomic molecule, calcium monohydroxide (CaOH). After trapping, the molecules are laser cooled in a blue-detuned optical molasses to a temperature of 110 μK, which is below the Doppler cooling limit. The temperatures and densities achieved here make CaOH a viable candidate for a wide variety of quantum science applications, including quantum simulation and computation using optical tweezer arrays 15,17,22,23 . This work also suggests that laser cooling and magneto-optical trapping of many other polyatomic species 24,25,26,27 will be both feasible and practical.

Blue-Detuned Magneto-optical Trap of CaF Molecules

Abstract:A key method to produce trapped and laser-cooled molecules is the magneto-optical trap (MOT), which is conventionally created using light red detuned from an optical transition. In this work, we report a MOT for CaF molecules created using blue-detuned light. The blue-detuned MOT (BDM) achieves temperatures well below the Doppler limit and provides the highest densities and phase-space densities reported to date in CaF MOTs. Our results suggest that BDMs are likely achievable in many relatively light molecules including polyatomic ones, but our measurements suggest that BDMs will be challenging to realize in substantially heavier molecules due to sub-mK trap depths. In addition to record temperatures and densities, we find that the BDM substantially simplifies and enhances the loading of molecules into optical tweezer arrays, which are a promising platform for quantum simulation and quantum information processing. Notably, the BDM reduces molecular number requirements ninefold compared to a conventional red-detuned MOT, while not requiring additional hardware. Our work therefore substantially simplifies preparing large-scale molecular tweezer arrays, which are a novel platform for simulation of quantum many-body dynamics and quantum information processing with molecular qubits. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.233402 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:Only bosonic molecular species have been directly laser cooled to date, primarily due to an abundance of bosonic isotopes in nature and to their simpler hyperfine structure. Fermionic molecules provide new opportunities for ultracold chemistry, quantum simulation, and precision measurements. Here we report direct laser cooling of a fermionic molecular isotopologue, calcium monodeuteride (CaD). With a nuclear spin I = 1, only 5 hyperfine states need to be addressed for rotational closure in optical cycling. These hyperfine states are unresolved for typical experimental linewidths. We present a method for efficiently producing alkaline-earth metal hydrides and deuterides. We demonstrate rotational closure and show magnetically assisted Sisyphus cooling in one dimension for a beam of CaD molecules. Our results indicate that the experimental complexity for laser cooling CaD is similar to that of calcium monohydride (CaH). Laser cooling of CaD is a promising first step for production of ultracold and trapped atomic deuterium.

We observe short BDM lifetimes at high magnetic field gradients, preventing magnetic compression as a means to increase densities. By directly measuring the BDM restoring force, we find that the short lifetimes are explained by low effective trap depths. Notably, we find sub-mK depths at typical magnetic gradients, in contrast to $\sim 50\,\text{mK}$ depths in red molecular MOTs and $\sim0.5\,\text{K}$ depths in red atomic MOTs.

Direct laser cooling of calcium monohydride molecules

Abstract:We demonstrate optical cycling and sub-Doppler laser cooling of a cryogenic buffer-gas beam of calcium monohydride (CaH) molecules. We measure vibrational branching ratios for laser cooling transitions for both excited electronic states A and B. We measure further that repeated photon scattering via the $A\leftarrow X$ transition is achievable at a rate of $\sim$ $1.6\times10^6$ photons/s and demonstrate the interaction-time limited scattering of $\sim$ $200$ photons by repumping the largest vibrational decay channel. We also demonstrate the ability to sub-Doppler cool a molecular beam of CaH through the magnetically assisted Sisyphus effect. Using a standing wave of light, we lower the molecular beam's transverse temperature from $12.2(1.2)$ mK to $5.7(1.1)$ mK. We compare these results to sub-Doppler forces modeled using optical Bloch equations and Monte Carlo simulations of the molecular beam trajectories. This work establishes a clear pathway for creating a magneto-optical trap (MOT) of CaH molecules. Such a MOT could serve as a starting point for production of ultracold hydrogen gas via dissociation of a trapped CaH cloud.

Abstract:We demonstrate sub-Doppler cooling of calcium atoms using a two-photon transition from the ${^1}S_0$ ground state to the upper $4s5s~{^1}S_0$ state via the ${^1}P_1$ intermediate state. We achieve temperatures as low as $260~\mu\text{K}$ in a magneto-optical trap (MOT), well below the Doppler limit ($T_{\text{D}} = 0.8~\text{mK}$) of the ${^1}P_1$ state. We characterize temperature, lifetime and confinement of the MOT over a range of experimental parameters, observing no reduction in lifetime due to coupling to the higher state. We perform theoretical simulations of the cooling scheme and observe good agreement with the experimental results. The two-photon cooling scheme presented in this work provides an alternative to the standard Doppler cooling applied to alkaline-earth atoms, based on a sequence of two magneto-optical traps. The advantages of our scheme are the possibility of varying the effective linewidth of the ${^1}P_1$ state, a higher transfer efficiency (close to 100$\%$), and a more straightforward experimental implementation.

Abstract:Different from atoms, molecules have unique properties, and play an important role in the research of atomic, molecular and optical physics. Cold molecules have important applications in science and have been studied for more than 20 years. But traditional methods, such as the Stark decelerator, have hit a bottleneck: it is hard to increase the phase space density of molecules. Extending the direct laser-cooling technique to new molecular species has recently been a hot topic and also a big challenge. In this review paper, on one hand, we make a brief review to recent progresses on the direct laser cooling of polar molecules. On the other hand, a demonstration on the feasibility of laser cooling BaF molecule has been experimentally illustrated, including the analysis on the molecular energy levels, measurements of the high-resolution spectroscopy, efficient pre-cooling and state preparation via buffer-gas cooling and detailed investigations on the molcule-light interactions. All these results not only pave the way for future laser-cooling and -trapping experiments, but also serve as a reference for the laser-cooling explorations on new molecular species.
A conveyor-belt magneto-optical trap of CaF

Abstract:We report the experimental realization of a conveyor-belt magneto-optical trap for calcium monofluoride (CaF) molecules. The obtained highly-compressed cloud has a mean radius of 64(5) $\mu$m and a peak number density of $3.6(5) \times 10^{10}$ cm$^{-3}$, a 600-fold increase over the conventional red-detuned MOTs of CaF, and the densest molecular MOT observed to date. Subsequent loading of these molecules into an optical dipole trap yields up to $2.6 \times 10^4$ trapped molecules at a temperature of 14(2) $\mu$K with a peak phase-space density of $\sim 2.4 \times 10^{-6}$. This opens new possibilities for a range of applications utilizing high-density, optically trapped ultracold molecules.

Abstract:Ultracold polar molecules are promising for quantum information processing and searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. Laser cooling to ultracold temperatures is an established technique for trapped diatomic and triatomic molecules. Further cooling of the molecules to near the motional ground state is crucial for reducing various dephasings in quantum and precision applications. In this work, we demonstrate Raman sideband cooling of CaF molecules in optical tweezers to near their motional ground state, with average motional occupation quantum numbers of $\bar{n}_{x}=0.16(12)$, $\bar{n}_{y}=0.17(17)$ (radial directions), $\bar{n}_{z}=0.22(16)$ (axial direction) and a 3-D motional ground state probability of $54\pm18\%$. This paves the way to increase molecular coherence times in optical tweezers for robust quantum computation and simulation applications.

Abstract:We present a magnetically enhanced laser cooling scheme applicable to multi-level type-II transitions and further diatomic molecules with adiabatic transfer. An angled magnetic field is introduced to not only remix the dark states, but also decompose the multi-level system into several two-level sub-systems in time-ordering, hence allowing multiple photon momentum transfer. For complex multi-level diatomic molecules, although the enhancement gets weakened, our simulations still predict a $\sim 4\times$ larger value of the maximum achievable cooling force and a wider coolable velocity range compared to the conventional Doppler cooling. A reduced dependence on spontaneous emission of this scheme makes laser cooling a molecule with leakage channels become a feasibility.

Abstract:Laser cooling is used to produce ultracold atoms and molecules for quantum science and precision measurement applications. Molecules are more challenging to cool than atoms due to their vibrational and rotational internal degrees of freedom. Molecular rotations lead to the use of type-II transitions ($F \geq F'$) for magneto-optical trapping (MOT). When typical red detuned light frequencies are applied to these transitions, sub-Doppler heating is induced, resulting in higher temperatures and larger molecular cloud sizes than realized with the type-I MOTs most often used with atoms. To improve type-II MOTs, Jarvis et al. PRL 120, 083201 (2018) proposed a blue-detuned MOT to be applied after initial cooling and capture with a red-detuned MOT. This was successfully implemented (Burau et al. PRL 130, 193401 (2023), Jorapur et al. PRL 132, 163403 (2024), Li et al. PRL 132, 233402 (2024)), realizing colder and denser molecular samples. Very recently, Hallas et al. <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2404.03636" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2404.03636">arXiv:2404.03636</a> (2024) demonstrated a blue-detuned MOT with a "1+2" configuration that resulted in even stronger compression of the molecular cloud. Here, we describe and characterize theoretically the conveyor-belt mechanism that underlies this observed enhanced compression. We perform numerical simulations of the conveyor-belt mechanism using both stochastic Schrödinger equation (SSE) and optical Bloch equation (OBE) approaches. We investigate the conveyor-belt MOT characteristics in relation to laser parameters, g-factors, and the structure of the molecular system.

Abstract:Laser slowing of CaF molecules down to the capture velocity of a magneto-optical trap for molecules is achieved. Starting from a two-stage buffer gas beam source, we apply frequency-broadened 'white-light' slowing and observe approximately CaF molecules in a single pulse with velocities 10 ± 4 m s−1. CaF is a candidate for collisional studies in the mK regime. This work represents a significant step towards magneto-optical trapping of CaF.

Abstract:From the study of long-range-interacting systems to the simulation of gauge fields, open-shell lanthanide atoms with their large magnetic moment and narrow optical transitions open novel directions in the field of ultracold quantum gases. As for other atomic species, the magnetooptical trap (MOT) is the working horse of experiments but its operation is challenging, due to the large electronic spin of the atoms. Here we present an experimental study of narrow-line dysprosium MOTs. We show that the combination of radiation pressure and gravitational forces leads to a spontaneous polarization of the electronic spin. The spin composition is measured using a Stern–Gerlach separation of spin levels, revealing that the gas becomes almost fully spinpolarized for large laser frequency detunings. In this regime, we reach the optimal operation of the MOT, with samples of typically 3 108 ́ atoms at a temperature of 15 μK. The spin polarization reduces the complexity of the radiative cooling description, which allows for a simple model accounting for our measurements. We also measure the rate of density-dependent atom losses, finding good agreement with a model based on light-induced Van der Waals forces. A minimal two-body loss rate 2 10 11 b ~ ́ cm s is reached in the spin-polarized regime. Our results constitute a benchmark for the experimental study of ultracold gases of magnetic lanthanide atoms.
Sub-Doppler Laser Cooling of Fermionic K-40 Atoms

Abstract:We report laser cooling of fermionic K-40 atoms, with temperatures down to (15 +/- 5) microK, for an enriched sample trapped in a MOT and additionaly cooled in optical molasses. This temperature is a factor of 10 below the Doppler-cooling limit and corresponds to an rms velocity within a factor of two of the lowest realizable rms velocity (~3.5v rec) in 3D optical molasses. Realization of such low atom temperatures, up to now only accessible with evaporative cooling techniques, is an important precursor to producing a degenerate Fermi gas of K-40 atoms.

Blue-detuned molecular magneto-optical trap schemes based on bayesian optimization

Abstract:Direct laser cooling and trapping of molecules to temperature below Doppler limit and density exceeding $10^8$ are challenging due to the sub-Doppler heating effects of molecular magneto-optical trap (MOT). In our previous paper [1], we presented a general approach to engineering the sub- Doppler force by tuning the AC stark shift with the addition of a blue detuned laser. Here, by employing the Bayesian optimization method to optical Bloch equations, we have identified multiple blue-detuned MOT schemes for the CaF molecule. From the three-dimensional Monte-Carlo simulation, we obtained a MOT temperature and density of 14 $\rm \mu K$ and $\rm 4.5 \times 10^8 cm^{-3}$, respectively. Our findings present a potential avenue for directly loading molecular MOTs into conservative traps, which can capitalize on the high density and low temperature of the MOT

Abstract:We demonstrate the largest number of 40 K atoms that has ever been cooled to deeply sub-Doppler temperatures in a single chamber apparatus without using an enriched source of potassium. With gray molasses cooling on the D 1 -line following a standard D 2 -line magneto-optical trap, we obtain 3×10 5 atoms at 10(2) μK. We reach densities high enough to measure the temperature via absorption imaging using the time-of-flight method. We magnetically trap a mixture of m F =-3/2,-5/2 and -7/2 Zeeman states of the F=7/2 hyperfine ground state confining 5×10 4 atoms with a lifetime of 0.6 s or ∼10 3 atoms with a lifetime of 2.8 s - depending on whether the temperature of the potassium dispensers was chosen to maximize the atom number or the lifetime. The background pressure-limited lifetime of 0.6 s is a reasonable starting point for proof-of-principle experiments with atoms and/or molecules in optical tweezers as well as for sympathetic cooling with another species if transport to a secondary chamber is implemented. Our results show that unenriched potassium can be used to optimize experimental setups containing 40 K in the initial stages of their construction, which can effectively extend the lifetime of enriched sources needed for proper experiments. Moreover, demonstration of sub-Doppler cooling and magnetic trapping of a relatively small number of potassium atoms might influence experiments with laser cooled radioactive isotopes of potassium.

Abstract:The grating magneto-optical trap (GMOT) requires only one beam and three planar diffraction gratings to form a cloud of cold atoms above the plane of the diffractors. Despite the complicated polarization arrangement, we demonstrate sub-Doppler cooling of 87Rb atoms to a temperature of 7.6(0.6) uK through a multi-stage, far-detuned GMOT in conjunction with optical molasses. A decomposition of the electric field into polarization components for this geometry does not yield a mapping onto standard sub-Doppler laser-cooling configurations. With numerical simulations, we find that the polarization composition of the GMOT optical field, which includes sigma- and pi-polarized light, does produce sub-Doppler temperatures.

Abstract:For experiments that require a quantum system to be in the ultra-cold regime, laser cooling is an essential tool. While techniques for laser cooling ions and neutral atoms have been refined and temperatures below the Doppler limit have been achieved, present-day techniques are limited to a small class of molecules. This paper proposes a general cooling scheme for molecules based on vibrational-state transitions. Superradiance is used to speed up the two-photon transition. Simulations of this scheme achieve temperatures comparable to those achieved by existing two-level schemes for neutral atoms and ions.

Abstract:We report optical trapping of laser-cooled molecules at sufficient density to observe molecule-molecule collisions for the first time in a bulk gas. SrF molecules from a red-detuned magneto-optical trap (MOT) are compressed and cooled in a blue-detuned MOT. Roughly 30% of these molecules are loaded into an optical dipole trap with peak number density $n_0 \approx 3\times 10^{10} \text{ cm}^{-3}$ and temperature $T\approx40$ $\mu$K. We observe two-body loss with rate coefficient $\beta = 2.7^{+1.2}_{-0.8}\times 10^{-10} \text{ cm}^3 \text{ s}^{-1}$. Achieving this density and temperature opens a path to evaporative cooling towards quantum degeneracy of laser-cooled molecules.
