Abstract:The ability of thin materials to shape-shift is a common occurrence that leads to dynamic pattern formation and function in natural and man-made structures. However, harnessing this concept to design inorganic structures at the nanoscale rationally has remained far from reach due to a lack of fundamental understanding of the essential physical components. Here, we show that the interaction between organic ligands and the nanocrystal surface is responsible for the full range of chiral shapes seen in colloidal nanoplatelets. The adsorption of ligands results in incompatible curvatures on the top and bottom surfaces of NPL, causing them to deform into helicoïds, helical ribbons, or tubes depending on the lateral dimensions and crystallographic orientation of the NPL. We demonstrate that nanoplatelets belong to the broad class of geometrically frustrated assemblies and exhibit one of their hallmark features: a transition between helicoïds and helical ribbons at a critical width. The effective curvature $\bar{\kappa}$ is the single aggregate parameter that encodes the details of the ligand/surface interaction, determining the nanoplatelets' geometry for a given width and crystallographic orientation. The conceptual framework described here will aid the rational design of dynamic, chiral nanostructures with high fundamental and practical relevance.

Abstract:We report the conformational control of 2D ultra-thin indium sulfide nanoribbons by tuning their amine ligands' alkyl chain. The initial orthorhombic InS nanoribbons bare octylamine ligands and display a highly curved geometry with a characteristic figure of eight shapes. Exchanging the native ligand by oleylamine induces their complete unfolding to yield flat board-shaped nanoribbons. Significant strain variations in the InS crystal structure accompany this shape-shifting. By tuning the linear alkyl chain length from 4 to 18 carbon atoms, we show using SAXS in solution and TEM that the curvature of the nanoribbon subtly depends on the ligand-ligand interactions at the nanoribbon's surface. The curvature decreases gradually as the chain length increases, while carbon unsaturation has an unexpectedly significant effect at constant chain length. These experiments shed light on the critical role of the ligand monolayer on the curvature of ultrathin 2D crystalline nanosheets and demonstrate that weak supramolecular forces within the organic part of colloidal nanocrystals can dramatically impact their shape. This transduction mechanism, in which changes in the organic monolayer impact the shape of a nanocrystal, will help devise new strategies to design stimuli-responsive systems that take advantage of both the flexibility of organic moieties and the physical properties of the inorganic core.

Abstract:The mechanism of self-assembling process of inorganic nanoparticle (NPs) is still an open question due to the various and non-additive interactions between NPs. Kotov et al reported that the semiconductor NPs can be self-assembled by external activation such as irradiation. In this paper, the twisted CdTe nanoribbons were successfully assembled with circular polar light activation based on the chiral selective resonance absorption. The effect of NP size on the morphology of assemblies under circular polar light irradiation is discussed by introducing a new mechanism of photooxidation induced dipole moment which decreases with increasing sizes of the NPs because of the change of band offsets at the CdS/CdTe interface. Moreover, we find that the competition between the dipole-dipole interaction and electrostatic repulsion can be modulated by the size of the NPs and the concentration of dispersion, which are the key points to produce the chiral twisted nanoribbons.

Abstract:In the formation of chiral crystals, the tendency for twist in the orientation of neighboring molecules is incompatible with ordering into a lattice: Twist is expelled from planar layers at the expense of local strain. We report the ordered state of a neat material in which a local chiral structure is expressed as twisted layers, a state made possible by spatial limitation of layering to a periodic array of nanoscale filaments. Although made of achiral molecules, the layers in these filaments are twisted and rigorously homochiral—a broken symmetry. The precise structural definition achieved in filament self-assembly enables collective organization into arrays in which an additional broken symmetry—the appearance of macroscopic coherence of the filament twist—produces a liquid crystal phase of helically precessing layers.

The Thermodynamic Origins of Chiral Twist in Monolayer Assemblies of Hard Rod-like Colloids

Abstract:The propagation of chirality across scales is a common but poorly understood phenomenon in soft matter. In this work, we use computer simulations to study chiral monolayer assemblies formed by hard rod-like colloidal particles in the presence of non-adsorbing polymer and characterize the thermodynamic driving forces responsible for the twisting. Simulations show that straight (achiral) rods assemble into monolayers with a spontaneous twist that is either left- or right-handed, while helical (chiral) rods lead to assemblies with preferential chiral features that depend on their handedness and curliness. The onset of chirality in these monolayers can be traced back to small clusters formed at the initial stage of the self-assembly. In these microscopic monolayers, entropy drives twisting in ways that differ from the assumptions on which existing continuum theory is built. Depending on the geometry of the constituent rods, the preferred chiral twist can be driven by entropy gain of the polymers, or of the rods, or both. In addition, the variation of the polymer entropy with twist depends on changes in both the surface area and the volume of the monolayer. Rod fluctuations perpendicular to the monolayer also play an important role in stabilising the twisting.

Controlling nano- and microfilament morphology by strategically placing chiral centers in the side chains of bent-core molecules

Abstract:Self-assembled lamellar nano- and microfilaments formed by select types of bent-core molecules are prime examples of the interplay between molecular conformation and morphological chirality. Here, we demonstrate how the strategic placement of chiral centers at C-1 and/or C-3 in the terminal alkyloxy side chains, largely based on a priori calculations of molecular conformation, leads to the predictable formation of increasingly complex nano- and microfilament morphologies. Adding to the previously described diversity of twisted and writhed filament types, we here demonstrate and explain the formation and coexistence of flat nanoribbons, nanocylinders, or nano- as well as microfilaments where the morphology spontaneously changes along the filament long axis. For some these more exotic types of filament morphology, helical multilayer filaments suddenly unwind to form flat nanoribbons that also twist again under preservation (not perversion) of the helical twist sense. Moreover, the morphologies formed by this series of molecules now allows us to demonstrate the complete transformation from flat multilayer ribbons over microfilaments and helical-wrapped nanocylinders to helical nanofilaments depending on the number and position of chiral centers in the aliphatic side chains.

Abstract:The spiral is a fundamental structure in nature and spiral structures with controllable handedness are of increasing interest in the design of new chiroptical materials. In this study, micrometer-scale spiral structures with reversible chirality were fabricated based on the assembly of a liquid crystalline block copolymer film assisted by enantiopure tartaric acid. Mechanistic insight revealed that the formation of the spiral structures was closely related to the liquid crystalline properties of the major phase of block copolymer under the action of chiral tartaric acid. The chiral spiral structures with controllable handedness were easily erased under ultraviolet light irradiation and restored via thermal annealing. This facile thermal treatment method provides guidance for fabrication of chiral micrometer-scale spiral structures with adjustable chiral properties.

Abstract:In some liquid crystal (LC) mixtures of bent-core host molecules that form helical nanofilaments (HNFs) and chiral, rod-shaped molecular guests, the spontaneous chirality of the HNFs is not influenced by the guest handedness. In other mixtures, the filaments become homochiral, responding to the handedness of the guest. We show that the important distinction between these two behaviours is the solubility of the guest material in the HNF phase. In our experiments, chiral LC mesogens doped into the HNF phase result in an enantiomeric imbalance and sometimes change the phase sequence on cooling from the isotropic melt.[GRAPHICS].

Abstract:Using both experiments and finite element simulations, we explore the shape evolution of off-axis twist nematic elastomer ribbons as a function of temperature. The elastomers are prepared by cross-linking the mesogens with planar anchoring of the director at top and bottom surfaces with a 90° left-handed twist. Shape evolution depends sensitively on the off-axis director orientation at the sample midplane. Both experiments and theoretical studies show that when the director at midplane is parallel to either the ribbon's long or short axes, ribbons form either helicoids or spirals depending on aspect ratio and temperature. Simulation studies show that if the director at midplane is off-axis, ribbons never form helicoids, instead evolving to distorted spiral shapes. Experimental studies for two samples with off-axis geometry show agreement with this prediction. Samples in all these geometries show a remarkable transition from right- to left-handed chiral shapes on change of temperature. Simulations predict off-axis samples also change their macroscopic chirality at fixed temperature, depending on the angular offset. These results provide insight into the mechanisms driving shape evolution and macroscopic chirality, enabling engineering design of these materials for future applications.

Abstract:In nature, proteins self-assemble into various structures with different dimensions. To construct these nanostructures in laboratories, normally proteins with different symmetries are selected. However, most of these approaches are engineering-intensive and highly dependent on the accuracy of the protein design. Herein, we report that a simple native protein LecA assembles into one-dimensional nanoribbons and nanowires, two-dimensional nanosheets, and three-dimensional layered structures controlled mainly by small-molecule assembly-inducing ligands RnG (n=1, 2, 3, 4, 5) with varying numbers of ethylene oxide repeating units. To understand the formation mechanism of the different morphologies controlled by the small-molecule structure, molecular simulations were performed from microscopic and mesoscopic view, which presented a clear relationship between the molecular structure of the ligands and the assembled patterns. These results introduce an easy strategy to control the assembly structure and dimension, which could shed light on controlled protein assembly.

Abstract:Polymerization‐induced self‐assembly incorporating liquid crystallization, as a polymerization‐induced hierarchical self‐assembly (PIHSA) method to produce polymeric particles with anisotropic morphologies facilely and efficiently, has drawn wide attention recently. However, the means of regulating the morphologies of liquid crystalline (LC) polymer assemblies still need to be explored. Herein, we present a route to fabricate the twisted ribbons via PIHSA containing azobenzene based on poor reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) control, called as poorly controlled PIHSA. Cyano‐4‐(dodecylsulfanylthiocarbonyl)sulfanyl pentanoic acid‐2‐(2‐pyridyldithio) ethyl ester was used as the RAFT agent with poor controllability, and the morphological evolution from ribbons to twisted ribbons could be observed in the corresponding PIHSA system. The formation mechanism of the twisted ribbons was studied systematically and the broad molecular weight distribution was considered to be the decisive factor. Moreover, the supramolecular chirality induced by symmetry breaking was also related to the twist of the ribbons. This study enriches the methods of controlling the morphologies of LC polymer particles and is helpful for further clarifying the mechanism of PIHSA. This article is protected by copyright. Self-Assembly of Au Nanoclusters into Helical Ribbons by Manipulating the Flexibility of Capping Ligands

Abstract:Self-assembly is a powerful technology to construct nanomaterials with helical structures. However, using metal nanoclusters (NCs) as the building blocks for the construction of helical architectures is still rarely reported. In this paper, Au NC assembled helical ribbons (Au NCHRs) are successfully constructed by using Au NCs as the building blocks. Effects of heating mode, solvent polarity and ligand length on the self-assembly process of Au NCs are discussed. The results indicate that the lengths of overlapped and nonoverlapped ligands between adjacent Au NCs play the dominated role on adjusting the morphologies of the resulting assemblies. Ligands with appropriate overlap can provide sufficient flexibility for the helical assembly of Au NCs without losing the stability. If the length of the overlapped parts is too long, the assemblies are usually rigid without the helical structure. Instead, the overlength of nonoverlapped ligands will boost the flexibility but damage the structural stability of the assemblies. Supramolecular Interactions Induced Chiral Assembly of Plasmonic Nanoparticles with Enhanced Optical Asymmetry

Abstract:Science has recently reported the important progress of chiral nanomaterials achieved by LIU Kun' s group from Jilin University and coworkers. Supramolecular interactions of gold nanorods(NRs)with human islet amyloid peptides catalyze their assembly into metallic superstructures with unusually high cholesteric order. Contrary to current theories,the transition from individual NRs to long straight helices leads to increase of g-factor (up to 0.12) by 4600 times. This work establishes the link between the liquid crystals and chiral in. organic nanostructures;provides unifying design principles for organic and inorganic optically active media and opens new modalities for drug discovery for amyloid diseases.

Abstract:Self‐assembly of peptides into highly ordered chiral nanostructures has great potential applications in optics, sensing, biomedicine, and templated synthesis. However, the detailed mechanism for the chiral amplification and spontaneous ordering during the self‐assembly of peptides remains largely unexplored. Here, it is shown that by topology control of the co‐assembly of a simple dipeptide and a chiral diamine within a confined film, the supramolecular structures can be controlled precisely from hierarchically organized helical bundles to microcrystals and then parallel aligned nanohelices. The peptide and diamines can co‐assemble into aligned microcrystals when the molar ratio (χ = Cdiamine/Cpeptide) of the two components is 0.5. However, by changing the χ value, excess peptides or diamines create topological defects during the self‐assembly process. This leads to chiral amplification and the formation of long‐range‐ordered nanohelical arrays with controlled phase behaviors. Moreover, the formation of right‐ or left‐handed nanohelices can be further inversed by the topological control, without the need to change the chirality of the peptides. These findings provide new insights into the chiral self‐assembly of amyloid‐related peptides and offer a facile strategy to fabricate highly ordered functional materials.

Abstract:Helical topological structures are often found in chiral biological systems, but seldom in synthesized polymers. Now, controllable microphase separation of amphiphilic liquid-crystalline block copolymers (LCBCs) consisting of hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) and hydrophobic azobenzene-containing poly(methylacrylate) is combined with chirality transfer to fabricate helical nanostructures by doping with chiral additives (enantiopure tartaric acid). Through hydrogen-bonding interactions, chirality is transferred from the dopant to the aggregation, which directs the hierarchical self-assembly in the composite system. Upon optimized annealing condition, helical structures in film are fabricated by the induced aggregation chirality. The photoresponsive azobenzene mesogens in the LCBC assist photoregulation of the self-assembled helical morphologies. This allows the construction and non-contact manipulation of complicated nanostructures.

Abstract:Sticking together: Diblock molecules containing a Y-shaped aromatic segment with a linear poly(ethylene oxide) head and branched alkyl chains at the tail have been synthesized. Cylindrical fibers are formed by the aggregation of these molecules in aqueous solution (see picture). Intercalation of an aromatic guest induces lateral stacking of the aggregates to form flat ribbons and a dramatic change from a gel to a fluid solution.
Shaping van der Waals nanoribbons via torsional constraints: Scrolls, folds and supercoils

Abstract:Interplay between structure and function in atomically thin crystalline nanoribbons is sensitive to their conformations yet the ability to prescribe them is a formidable challenge. Here, we report a novel paradigm for controlled nucleation and growth of scrolled and folded shapes in finite-length nanoribbons. All-atom computations on graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) and experiments on macroscale magnetic thin films reveal that decreasing the end distance of torsionally constrained ribbons below their contour length leads to formation of these shapes. The energy partitioning between twisted and bent shapes is modified in favor of these densely packed soft conformations due to the non-local van der Waals interactions in these 2D crystals; they subvert the formation of supercoils that are seen in their natural counterparts such as DNA and filamentous proteins. The conformational phase diagram is in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions. The facile route can be readily extended for tailoring the soft conformations of crystalline nanoscale ribbons and more general self-interacting filaments.

Abstract:Real-time atomic force microscopy observation was carried out during crystallization in thin films of chiral poly(R-3-hydroxybutyrate-co-R-3-hydroxyhexanoate) copolymer, and the development details of single lamellae in the banded spherulites are revealed for the first time. The lamellae exhibit complicated growth behaviors: twisting, bending, backward growth, and branching. The lamellae continuously twist to show alternating edge-on and flat-on views along the radii of the spherulites. Giant screw dislocations bring forth to the birth of new lamellae. Interaction between the leading and trailing lamellae contributes to cooperative stacking of the twisting crystals. The lamellae twist before screw dislocations appear, demonstrating that screw dislocations are not causal of twisting. All the observed twisting occurs in the right-handed sense, likely resulting from the chirality of the crystal structure. Increased crystallization temperature results in decreased magnitude of lamellar twisting and bending. Models for morphological development are discussed in the context of these observations.

Abstract:Despite recent advances in synthetic nanometer-scale helical assembly, control of supramolecular chirality remains a challenge. Here, we describe the fine-tuning of the shape and morphology transitions of twisted and helical assembly from dumbbell-shaped rigid-flexible amphiphile triggered by concentration. The amphiphile 2 self-assembles into nonchiral 3D columnar crystals with alternative packing of aromatic segment in solid state. Remarkably, with the addition of water into the solid, the achiral crystal transforms into 2D hexagonally ordered liquid crystal gel with supramolecular chirality due to increased entropy of flexible coil in aqueous environment. Notably, the helical liquid crystal gel was observed to dissolve into optically active aqueous nanofibers caused by a conformational change of hydrophobic aromatic rods and enhanced hydro-volume of the ethylene oxide chains.
