Abstract:Carbazole-containing 1-phenyl-1-alkynes with different spacer lengths [C6H5C≡C(CH2)mCar 1(m) (m = 3, 4, 9), Car =9-carbazolyl] were synthesised in high yields by consecutive substitution and coupling reactions of n-chloro-1-alkynes. Polymerisation of the monomers was effected by NbCl5– and WCl6–Ph4Sn catalysts, furnishing soluble polymers P1(m) with high molecular weights in high yields. All the polymers were thermally stable, commencing to lose their weights at high temperatures (≥ 400°C). Photoexcitation of their THF solutions induced strong blue light emissions with high quantum efficiencies up to 92 %. Multilayer electroluminescence devices with configurations of ITO/P1(m)(:PVK)/BCP/Alq3/LiF/Al were constructed, which gave blue light with maximum luminance and external quantum efficiency of 438 cd m–2 and 0.63 %. UV irradiation of a thin film of P1(4) through a mask oxidized and quenched the light emission of the exposed parts, generating a two-dimensional luminescent photopattern.

Abstract:The synthesis of (E)-2-(4-bromostyryl)quinoline involves an acid catalysed condensation of 2-methylquinoline and 4-bromobenzaldehyde. (E)-4'-[(2-(Quinolin-2-yl)vinyl)]-(1,1'-biphenyl)-4-carbaldehyde has been synthesised from (E)-2-(4-bromostyryl) quinoline and 4-formylphenylboronic acid via a Suzuki coupling reaction. A series of novel quinoline derivatives containing both a biphenyl group and an alpha, beta-diarylacrylonitrile unit have been prepared by the base-catalysed condensation between (E)-4'-[(2-(quinolin-2-yl)vinyl)]-(1,1'-biphenyl)-4-carbaldehyde and various arylacetonitriles. By contrast, the acid-catalysed condensation of the latter aldehyde with several aniline derivatives has been used to synthesise quinolines containing an imine group. These compounds, which have implications for the manufacture of organic light-emitting diodes, emit blue to green fluorescence with maximum emission peaks of 419-531 nm in solution and in the solid state under UV irradiation. Thermogravimetric analysis reveals their good thermal stability with a decomposition temperature range from 313 to 387 degrees C.

Abstract:Novel donor-π-acceptor dyes bearing the pyrimidine unit as an electron-withdrawing group have been synthesized by using combination of two processes, based on the microwave-assisted Suzuki cross-coupling reaction and nucleophilic aromatic substitution of hydrogen. Spectral properties of the obtained dyes in six aprotic solvents of various polarities have been studied by ultraviolet–visible and fluorescence spectroscopy. In contrast to the absorption spectra, fluorescence emission spectra displayed a strong dependence from their solvent polarities. The nature of the observed long wavelength maxima has been elucidated by means of quantum chemical calculations. The electrochemical properties of these dyes have been investigated by using cyclic voltammetry, while their photovoltaic performance was evaluated by a device fabrication study. The experimental and calculation data show that all of the dyes can be regarded as potentially good photosensitizers for dye-sensitized solar cells.

Abstract:A series of novel 5-(3-aryl-1H-pyrazol-5-yl)-2-(3-butyl-1-chloroimidazo[1,5-a]- pyridin-7-yl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole derivatives has been synthesized from 3-butyl-1-chloroimidazo[1,5-a]pyridine-7-carboxylic acid and ethyl 3-aryl-1H-pyrazole-5-carboxylate. The compounds were characterized using IR, (1)H NMR, HRMS and UV-vis absorption. The fluorescence spectral characteristics of the compounds in dichloromethane were investigated. The results showed that absorption λmax and emission λmax was less correlated with substituent groups on N-1 position of pyrazole moiety and para position of benzene moiety. The calculated molecular orbital correlates well with their absorption.

Abstract:Carbazole and triphenylamine, are two well-known hole transporting units that are attached to electron transporting unit 4,5-diazafluorene in a fascinating way to bring out non-planar configuration of a molecule. The synthesized compound exhibits good thermal stability (T d > 515 °C) and high glass transition temperature (T g , 191 °C). Optical bandgap (E g opt ) obtained from solid state absorption spectra was calculated to be 2.93 eV. Solid state photoluminescence spectra displays the emission maxima at 473 nm. The emission characteristics of the compound observed in solvents of different polarity confirms the existence of intramolecular charge transfer in their excited state. Density functional theory studies reveal that HOMO and HOMO-1 localized on triphenylamine is spatially separated from LUMO of 4,5-diazafluorene, which manifest its bipolar character. The realization of long lived charge separated state upon photo-excitation from time resolved photoluminescence studies ascertains the charge transfer from triphenylamine to 4,5-diazafluorene. The experimental and theoretical analysis of the compound proved it to be a promising candidate for the fabrication of OLED devices.

Abstract:A series of symmetrical D-π-A-π-D molecules based on benzothiadiazole and oligo(thienylenevinylene)s were facilely developed. The investigation of their photophysical and electrochemical properties demonstrated that these compounds exhibited broad absorption covering the whole visible range with appropriate energy levels for light-harvesting donors.

Abstract:Two centrosymmetric D-π-D type triphenylamine chromophores with long π-conjugated bridge and strong electron-donating moiety were designed, synthesized and fully characterized. The crystal analysis revealed that multiple CH⋯π interactions existed in two chromophores, which played a crucial role in generating molecular 1D chains and 2D layers structures. Linear and nonlinear optical properties of the chromophores were systematically investigated with the aid of theoretical calculations. Two chromophores both exhibited intense and wide-dispersed one-photon/two-photon excited fluorescence, bear prodigious 2PA cross section (δ). Especially for Dye2, with ethyoxyl groups, displayed the strong 2PA activity, large cross-sections (δmax>16,000GM) and high NLO efficiency (δmax/MW>16GM/(g·mol)) in the range of 680-830nm in DMF. In addition, one- and two-photon fluorescence microscopy images of HepG2 cells incubated with Dye2 were obtained and found that Dye2 could effectively uptake toward living cells and display a uniformly localized in cytosolic space.

Abstract:Carbazole-based dyes containing aldehyde and cyanoacetic acid groups were synthesized through Sonogashira coupling and Knoevenagel reactions. These compounds included 6-((4-(diphenylamino) phenyl) ethynyl)-9-ethyl-9H-carbazole-3-carbaldehyde (CCC), 9-ethyl-6-((9-ethyl-9H-carbazol-3-yl) ethynyl)-9H-carbazole-3-carbaldehyde (TCC), (E)-2-cyano-3-(9-ethyl-6-((9-ethyl-9H-carbazol-3-yl) ethynyl)-9H-carbazol-3-yl) acrylic acid (CCN) and (E)-2-cyano-3-(6-((4-(diphenylamino) phenyl) ethynyl)9- ethyl-9H-carbazol-3-yl) acrylic acid (TCN). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed these structures to be coplanar-conjugated molecular and uniform in shape. The UV spectra showed three main absorption peaks from 240 nm to 400 nm, indicating pi-pi* and n-pi* electron transitions. The calculated vertical singlet excitation energy was within the range of n-pi*. This finding was confirmed based on the acceptor results in reduced highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital gap by launching cyanoacetic acid. These functional compounds could be used as dyes/photosensitizers.

Abstract:A novel A-π-D-π-D-π-A type compound, containing two benzothiazole rings as electron acceptors and two N-ethylcarbazole groups as electron donors, (E)-1,2-bis(3-(benzothiazol-2-yl)-9-ethylcarbazol-6-yl)ethene (BBECE), was synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, NMR, MS and thermogravimetric analysis. Electrochemical property of compound BBECE was studied by cyclic voltammetry analysis. The absorption and emission spectra of BBECE was experimentally determined in several solvents and simultaneously computed using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). The calculated absorption and emission wavelengths are coincident with the measured data. The lowest-lying absorption spectra can be mainly attributed to intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), and the fluorescence spectra can be mainly described as originating from an excited state with intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) character. The molecular orbitals (HOMO and LUMO), the ionization potential (IP), the electron affinity (EA) and reorganization energy of compound BBECE were also investigated using density functional theory (DFT). The results show that compound BBECE exhibited excellent thermal stability and electrochemical stability as well as high fluorescence quantum yield, indicating its potential applications as an excellent optoelectronic material in optical fields.

Abstract:Three star-shaped D-pi-A compounds with a 1,3,5-triazine core and N-aryl chromophore (3,6-di-tert-butylcarbazole, phenoxazine and phenothiazine) substituted fluorene arms were designed and synthesized. Their photophysical properties were investigated systematically via spectroscopic and theoretical methods. All compounds exhibit strong (1)pi-pi* transitions in the UV region and intense (1)pi-pi*/intramolecular charge transfer ((ICT)-I-1) absorption bands in the UV-vis region. Bathochromic shifts of the (ICT)-I-1 bands were caused by the electron-donating N-aryl chromophores. All compounds exhibit aggregation induced emission properties in asolvent, and relatively high quantum efficiency in solid-states (Phi = 10% -20%). Moreover, these compounds show two-photon absorption (TPA) properties due to their good planarity and large pi-conjugation. The largest TPA cross section value reaches up to 5000 GM at 800 nm. The multifunctional properties make these compounds potential candidates for application in organic light-emitting materials and two-photon bioimaging. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:3,6-Carbazole precursors were used to prepare an octaphyrin. The conformation and electronic structure of the system could be modulated through trifluoroacetate (TFA) protonation and BF2 complexation. The resulting nonaromatic macrocyclic complexes, 2-2TFA and 2-2BF2, displayed noteworthy photophysical properties. For instance, the diprotonated species 2-2TFA showed a strong panchromic absorption up to 800 nm, while the bis-BF2-chelated dipyrromethene (BODIPY)-like complex 2-2BF2 exhibited an intense visible absorption feature (ε535nm = 2.1 × 105 M-1 cm-1), as well as a relatively red-shifted emission at 640 nm characterized by a large Stokes shift. It was found that 2-2BF2 could be used to construct a high-quality organic microlaser that functions under optical pumping. The present study highlights the potential utility of expanded porphyrins as possible laser dyes.

Abstract:Four D-pi-A or D-pi-D phenothiazine compounds bearing different substituents on central pi-bridge (R = -H (PTZ-1), -Br (PTZ-2), -CN (PTZ-3) and -OC12H25 (PTZ-4)) were synthesized and characterized. The influence of the substituents on the photophysics of these compounds is systematically investigated by spectroscopic methods and simulated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. All compounds exhibit intense absorption bands in UV and visible region, which are influenced by the different substituents on the central pi-bridge. Both electron-withdrawing and electron-donating substituents cause bathochromic shifts of the low energy (1)pi-pi*/(ICT)-I-1 (intramolecular charge transfer) absorption bands. Meanwhile, all compounds are emissive in solution at room temperature (lambda(em) = 400-800 nm, Phi(em) = 0.01-0.74). Their fluorescent quantum yields decrease when the electron-withdrawing substituents attached on the central pi-bridge, but increase when electron-donating substituents were introduced. In addition, PTZ-1-PTZ-4 all exhibit strong triplet transient absorption (TA) in visible region. When the electron-donating substituents attached, the triplet excited-state molar extinction coefficient (190200 L mol(-1) cm(-1)) and triplet excited-state lifetime (53.2 mu s) of PTZ-4 were significantly enhanced. Their luminescent and excited state absorption properties could provide us a basis for elucidating the structure-property correlations of phenothiazine compounds and developing novel optical functional materials.

Abstract:Organic dyes containing trifluoromethylated-pyrazolo[3, 4-b]quinoline were synthesized by using condensation reaction between substituted pyrazolo-4-formaldehyde and aryl amines in moderate yields. Quantum calculation, electrochemical, photophysical, and electroluminescent properties were discussed in detail. Electron-withdrawing groups at 6-position of dyes stabilized the LUMO energy levels significantly resulting in red-shifted absorption/emission spectra. Addition of electron-donating group destabilized the HOMO strongly and the LUMO energy levels slightly resulting in red-shifted absorption maxima, but in blue-shifted emission maxima. Experimental and quantum calculation results are presented here to explain this unusual phenomenon. A linear relationship of dipole moments versus Stokes shifts is obtained for these fluorophores, where the increase of dipole moment is accompanied by a decrease in Stokes shift. Organic light-emitting diodes based on selected dyes showed emission at 456 nm, maximum external quantum efficiency at 1.43%, and current efficiency at 1.95 cd/A. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Three donor–acceptor (D–A) conjugated compounds consisted of carbazole and fluorene (Scheme 1) were synthesized via Wittig-Horner, Ullmann or Sonogashira reaction. Their photoluminescence properties were investigated in solution and solid state, respectively. Luminescence in various solvents revealed the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) process exists in these D–A molecules. Correlation between the Stokes’ shifts and solvent polarity parameters indicated that moderate large dipole moments exist in the excited states.

Abstract:Two new star-burst compounds based on 1,3,5-triazine core and carbazole end-capped phenylene ethynylene arms (1a and 1b) were synthesized and characterized. Their photophysical properties were investigated systematically via spectroscopic and theoretical methods. Both compounds exhibit strong 1π–π⁎ transitions in the UV region and intense 1π–π⁎/intramolecular charge transfer (1ICT) absorption bands in the UV–vis region. Introducing the carbazole end-capped phenylene ethynylene arm on the 1,3,5-triazine core causes a slight bathochromic shift and enhanced molar extinction coefficient of the 1π–π⁎/1ICT transition band. Both compounds are emissive in solution at room temperature and 77K, which exhibit pronounced positive solvatochromic effect. The emitting state could be ascribed to 1ICT state in more polar solvent, and 1π–π⁎ state in low-polarity solvent. The high emission quantum yields (Φem=0.90~1.0) of 1a and 1b (in hexane and toluene) make them potential candidates as efficient light-emitting materials. The spectroscopic studies and theoretical calculations indicate that the photophysical properties of these compounds can be tuned by the carbazole end-capped phenylene ethynylene arm, which would also be useful for rational design of photofunctional materials.

Abstract:Pyrazolinone derivatives are a new class of organic photochromic materials with excellent optical color change properties in the powder crystal state, which show great potential for applications, including high-density storage, fluorescence switching, and bioimaging. Their design and synthesis with structural photoreversibility and excellent fluorescence modulation properties are areas of research focus. Rational modification of the molecular backbone with the introduction of the 5-bromopyridine group at the 4-position of the pyrazolinone ring was used to prepare three pyrazolinone condensed aminothiourea derivatives with photoreversible color change in the powder crystal state. The molecular structures of the compounds were confirmed by mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The changes in the infrared spectra indicated alcoholic to ketonic transformation in the molecular structures upon ultraviolet (UV) illumination. The ultraviolet-visible (UV–vis) absorption spectra showed significant photoreversible changes in all three derivatives, and the introduction of the electron-absorbing phenyl group resulted in the most significant fading of DP5Br3PyBP-PTSC. The fluorescence emission spectra showed that the three derivatives have prominent blue fluorescence. Their fluorescence emission intensity gradually decreased until the increase in UV illumination time produced quenching. The property of excellent fluorescence reversibility under the alternating UV and visible light was shown by all three derivatives, which are expected to be applied in fluorescent molecular switches.

Abstract:Diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) functionalised with an electron donating unit acts as a donor‐acceptor molecules that have shown potential for application in dyes and photovoltaics. These molecules offer broad absorption/emission properties and structure‐dependent dynamics. In this study, we used femtosecond pump‐probe spectroscopy to investigate the photo‐initiated dynamics of thiophene linked DPP derivatives. The thio‐DPPs are further functionalised by different electrons withdrawing terminal groups, namely benzoxazole and thiophene dicyanide. The benzoxazole derivative is strongly emissive and directly relaxes directly to the ground state chloroform solution. Thiophene dicyanide derivative exhibits distinct spectral evolution in the first 10 ps, associated with structural and vibronic process. Later, it crosses over to the triplet state with a yield of 20%. In the solid‐state thin film, we observed a signal that resembles singlet fission. However, upon careful analysis of temperature‐dependent steady state absorbance spectra, we conclude that these features are due to laser‐induced thermal artifacts. We describe a simplified excited state evolution in the thin film that does not include any additional excited states. These findings have significant implications for the analysis of triplet formation, which plays a major role in the photophysics of many organic materials.
