Abstract:Inspired by the attempt to disrupt data gathering and asking ourselves about “spam” digital practices as forms of resistance, the project SPAM (An)Archive brought together the work of the (post)composer and media artist Óscar Escudero and the collective SoundTrieb, whose collaboration took place digitally via Zoom and physically in Switzerland in 2021. Escudero’s collaborative work in the last few years with the (post)composer and musicologist Belenish Moreno-Gil has been fruitful at a sociological and cultural level of analysis, beyond music aesthetics, as they both deal with social networks and digital behavior in their music theater compositions. Using Facebook as a digital stage, SoundTrieb’s version of [Custom #2] (a digital melodrama) allowed performers to develop a double personalization of the piece, intervening their own social media profiles. This paper does not intend to discuss a theoretical approach to these artworks, but their subversive capability. Through a cultural analysis approach, this article recognizes the critical potential against the architecture of digital surveillance that they can achieve, while drawing attention to our complacency to ubiquitous technologies. For this purpose, I introduce notions such as DIY music and coded representation, but I also borrow concepts such as Brigitta Muntendorf’s social composing and Escudero’s spam art. This paper explores, through work examples by all the above-mentioned artists, recent models of compositional work that blur the line between the digital and the physical, the virtual and the real, the private and the public.

Spanish Civil War caves of Asturias in archaeology and memory

Abstract:As the Spanish Civil War drew to a close, retreating Republican troops in the northern region of Asturias took refuge in caves in the mountains from the brutal victor’s justice of the Francoist forces. In this paper we examine three of these caves in the context of the Civil War experiences of the rural municipality of Santo Adriano, based on a combination of archaeological recording and oral history interviews. The paper focuses on the role of the La Ponte-Ecomuseum, a grassroots heritage organisation that has worked to preserve and communicate the tangible and intangible heritage of the district. The Civil War heritage presents cultural, political and practical challenges for the museum: nonetheless it has succeeded in establishing an ongoing programme for its communication and protection.

Abstract:This article considers the nature of the new communication devices or artifactual interfaces (Gobato, 2014) in the safe- guarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage processes. Through a critic recovery of the project Villa Mitre 3.0, which was conducted in an Argentinean city from 2010 to 2012, we focalize in the strengths and weakness of this proposal to understand their social meaning in the community where it took place. The analytical emphasis is on the possibilities of new devices to canalize the concerns of communities for their own history. From the coordination of various personal and institutional projects, started up Villa Mitre 3.0, a participatory history file and multimedia about Villa Mitre and surrounding neighbourhoods, which were designed from the georeference of the stories. Villa Mitre 3.0 was intended as a project of interactive and participatory cartography, aimed at the production, research and dissemination of digital culture, recovery and preservation of the collective memory, from the confluence of art, science, technology and society.

Abstract:The renowned Moors and Christians celebrations held in Alicante (specifically in Villajoyosa), are widely appreciated for their authentic recreations of historical events and battles that took place during the sixteenth century. Moreover, Villajoyosa is famous for its excellent state of conservation of architectonic elements such as walls, facades, watchtowers, churches, or fortifications. However, due to the poor information, these events have been moved to different places to the ones where the original battles happened. Hence, this study presents a practical examination aimed at cataloging and characterizing the impact of pyrotechnics and firing weapons in close proximity to these architectural elements. In order to gather these data, multiple sound‐level meters and accelerometers were strategically positioned on the building. Six arquebusiers fire their weapons to emulate the effect of this festival. Thanks to the obtained results, we have been able to propose some recommendations to move these events to the original emplacement at the time of protecting our heritage.

Abstract:Since its inception in ancient Greece, public space has played a key role in the politics and democracy of cities. Its role has been degraded in post-modernity, and reached its deepest crisis in the full maturity of the post-Fordist system (from 1990 onwards). This economic and representation depression, as well as institutional legitimacy, that States are experiencing, have promoted the emergence and resurgence of different social movements that flood cities globally. Here is where the concern of the Frente Urbano Amparo Poch y Gascón collective lies, formed by the authors, to recognize and characterize, from a socio-urban logic, these manifestations and the sustained occupation that public spaces have experienced in different Latin American cities during the last decade. This research, framed within the Virtual Latin American Meeting, Utopías Líquidas, is proposed starting from a mixed methodology of collective mapping, recognizing public spaces, and characterizing their occupation exercised by Latin American social movements, in the dispute to redefine them and regain their political character, and thus value the different Latin American social movements and their struggles, in an act that encourages resistance and solidarity.

Abstract:Las fotografías tomadas por Antoni Campañà (1906-1989) durante la Guerra Civil española estuvieron ocultas durante más de ochenta años hasta su descubrimiento en otoño de 2018. Este importantísimo hallazgo aporta una nueva mirada a la Barcelona en guerra y revolución ofreciendo material fotográfico complementario y desconocido de sucesos de gran importancia histórica como “la Desbandá” andaluza de 1937, las protestas por la escasez alimentaria o los efectos de los bombardeos nacionales, así como retratos inéditos de los milicianos anarquistas o de figuras como Joan García Oliver. De los más de 5000 negativos de guerra inéditos descubiertos, en este trabajo analizamos diez fotografías representativas del autor, su estilo y la época que retrata.

Abstract:Cinemapp is a web application (webapp) that enables the individual or group discovery of the Cinematic Ecosystem of the city of Valladolid. This city is distinguished for its architectural heritage and cinematic history, with numerous cinemas that have vanished and films that have been shot there, thus comprising a unique combination of architectural and cinematic heritage. The application fosters an interactive experience that facilitates the exploration and enjoyment of the city's cinematic history, as well as contemplation of film, media, and new technologies. The project compiles a wide range of historical information and citizen memories in various digital formats, which nourish the graphical database named FilmcityDB. By combining both resources and employing the Valladolid context as an extrapolatable prototype, users can explore different routes and immerse themselves in the accumulated cinematic history of the city since the past century.

Abstract:Abstract. Until now, the analysis of earthen architecture, characteristic of the Tartessian culture, has been overlooked by archaeological studies. With the aim of incorporating it into historical research as another social product, the result of the society that thinks and builds it, a research project was initiated with the title "Building Tartessos: constructive, spatial and territorial analysis of an architectural model in the central Guadiana valley." This project has three well-differentiated work phases whose development and applied methodology are described in the following pages. The purpose of this method is to identify the types of construction, to characterize the raw materials used and their catchment areas, the construction techniques employed, the types of analysis carried out for the mineralogical characterization of the materials, and to present the 3D technology applied to the documentation and registration of the buildings, from photogrammetry to the virtual reconstruction of the archaeological sites. The final objective is to streamline the process, the data collection and the documentation obtained from all of them, from both a purely scientific and informative perspective, improving the publication of scientific knowledge and education through the application of new methodologies. In order to carry out this process, the Tartessian buildings hidden beneath burial mounds characteristic of the central basin of the Guadiana, dating from the 5th century BC, have been selected. Specifically, we have the excavations being carried out in the area of Casas del Turuñuelo (Guareña, Badajoz), which to date is the best preserved building in the western area of the Mediterranean, and which will undoubtedly lead to a positive result from the project. The aim of the methodology that has been designed is that it can be applied to any architectural model and to any stage of history.
Virtual and didactic approach to the defensive heritage of the 16th century Fort of the Trinitat (Roses, Girona)

Abstract:The Trinitat Fort, built in the mid-16th century, is an extraordinary example of European military architecture from the mid-16th century, conceived as an artillery machine, whose mission was to protect the natural port of Roses (Girona, Spain). The fortification had a long history of warfare that ended with the Peninsular War (1808–1814), which turned it into ruins. In 2002, the Roses city council planned an ambitious architectural intervention to recover the fortification. The works restored the overall exterior volumetry, with current construction materials. The large interior spaces resulting from the intervention had little in common with the original structures. Starting in 2016, the museum projected to open the fort to the public. The strategy focused on 3D works, which were used to plan museographic proposals and to make an interior space understandable, with an aspect very distant from that of the original construction. It entailed extensive fieldwork analyzing the sources and structural remains that were preserved and surmising the possible architectural solutions the fortress originally contained. Based on evidence and hypotheses, the group carried out a reconstruction from virtual archeology, and it developed a didactic iconography to explain the artifact to a broad spectrum of visitors and students. This iconography was applied on the panels, in the scenography and audiovisuals of the museum, and in the dissemination materials. The museography was implemented between 2019 and 2021. Considering the variables and comprehensive needs for a wide range of users and visitors, we completed the virtual archeology proposal based on realistic criteria, giving importance in 3D to textures and colors. It incorporated the anthropic and movable factors through matte painting techniques and images obtained with the support of re-enactment groups.Highlights: - The Fort of the Trinitat, built in the middle of the 16th century, is an extraordinary poliorcetic piece, conceived as an artillery machine, whose mission was to protect the natural port of Roses (Girona, Spain). - Between 2019 and 2021, an ambitious reconstruction of virtual archaeology has been carried out, developing a didactic iconography aimed at broad-spectrum visitors and formal education students. - The didactic iconography proposal developed in the Fort of the Trinitat does not try to compete with the large market productions, but it does try to explore sustainable intervention models to make the past and its heritage known.

Abstract:Narrated through images and languages that evoke ever more extreme and often arresting realisms, the capturing of poverty through greater authenticity and intimate access, while arousing empathy or seeking social justice, has reached a creative abundance aided by cultural coalitions and incessant technological advances in the production, access, and mobility of text, photography, video, and film. This article addresses the aesthetic and political economies informing street children self-representation in two more or less recent Latin American examples in film and photography, where stark marginalization and truculent realities constitute the daily landscape but also the object of exposure, namely the Mexican documentary Voces de la Guerrero (dir. Adrián Arce, Diego Rivera Khon, Antonio Ziriòn, and the colonia Guerrero gang, 2004) and the bi-nationally produced book/project Cicatrices en mi piel: los niños de la calle se fotografían a sí mismos (Scars on my Skin: Street Children Photograph Themselves, Hartwig Weber and Sierra Jaramillo, 2005). This trend can be considered, I suggest here, as a vivid manifestation of the commoditized cultural content Maurizio Lazzarato analyzed as immaterial labor but reflective, correspondingly, of a ‘precarization’ woven into global image and labor flows with a utopian, transformative imprint of ever more extreme realities of destitution. As testimonies of postindustrial urban displacement and cruelty, but also as reformative pedagogic missions, the examples I look at and interrogate in this article also resonate with other visual trends in that they are structured explicitly as collaborative endeavors between artists, ethnographers, sociologists or various other activists, and marginal subjects, with the express goal of the latter's self-representation and restoration. What distinguishes such collaborations is an overt drive toward auto-representation and an expressed hope that being in the image and in some control of its production will, through photographic dispersion, result in social renovation and/or empowerment.

Abstract:Abstract: The theatre of Selfa Chew (Mexico City, 1962) takes ownership of historical events to add fictional but feasible possibilities within the represented political reality to which it belongs as a descendant or heir. The docudrama The Salt of War is an example of such theatre. The possible scenarios of this dramatic text, written in 2014, are constructed with the same subjectivity as the official U.S. versions of the exploitation of natural resources after the demarcation of the Mexico-U.S. border in 1848, the Apache extermination (1861-1886), and the conflict over the exploitation of salt between the residents of the town of San Elizario and the Texan authorities (1877). For the analysis, I focus on the main components of the text: 1) Documentary: the actual reference; 2) Archive/repertoire: the deficit of documentary sources and the use of the collective memory of the people involved; 3) Female characters: the relevance of the way in which women are portrayed; and 4) Cross-border region: the geographic coordinates where the factors that afflict its inhabitants take place: marginalization, racism, xenophobia; and other issues that, in a timeless way, persist in this liminal zone, facilitating the connection of the plays with their ideal audience.

Abstract:The practice of enforced disappearances fundamentally alters memorialisation rituals as relatives do not have a body to localise mourning as is possible with processes of death. Families in the Southern Cone of South America (Chile/Argentina) have sought new ways to remember the dictatorship missing who remain in a liminal space between life and death. As a vehicle to represent public grief, photography became vital; families marched with photographs of their disappeared relatives on placards or pinned to their chests. Studies on the importance of photography and disappearance have come some way in elucidating the photographic medium’s unique role of in representing the disappeared. However, little scholarship has looked at the role of photography and new media in these histories. Charting the use of photographs in Chile and Argentina to represent the disappeared and their families’ grief, this article engages with their suspended mourning drawing on content and visual analysis alongside expert interview data. By analysing two websites that reproduce photographs of the disappeared: www.memoriaviva.com and www.recordatorios.com.ar, the article looks at the use of photography in the digital ecology. Both sites show photography’s continued importance for rituals of remembrance and to demand accountability in the present and for the future.

Abstract:This study delves into the transformative role of air-raid shelters from the Spanish Civil War in Alicante, Spain, highlighting their significance in the recovery and preservation of intangible heritage. Through a detailed hermeneutic analysis based on interviews and existing research, the investigation explores the shelters’ contribution to cultural identity, memory, and sustainable urban development. It reveals how the hermeneutics of memory, applied via a rigorous scientific approach, serves as a vital tool for justifying, rehabilitating, and planning these historical sites for tourism aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals. The rehabilitation of these shelters not only acts as a conservation effort but also as a means to promote cultural tourism enhancing Alicante’s cultural and tourist offerings. The study underscores the shelters’ dual role as educational resources and tourist attractions, facilitating a deeper understanding and connection with the past, and fostering community development and sustainability.

Abstract:This paper is focused on the Middle Paleolithic rock shelter called “Abrigo de San Lázaro”, placed in the Eresma River valley (Segovia, Spain). In this area, a multisource geomatic approach is used. On the one hand, the external envelope of the shelter has been digitalized by the means of an efficient combination between aerial photogrammetry and laser scanning (static and mobile). On the other hand, the ground penetrating radar and the electric tomography were used with the aim of evaluating the inner disposition of the shelter. The combination of both digitalization (external and internal) has allowed for improving the knowledge of the site characteristics that, in turn, will facilitate the future excavation works. The results of these studies allow archaeologists to know new data for a better understanding of the site formation (geology of the site, sedimentary potential, rock shelter dimensions, etc.) and the events that took place in it (knowing its historical evolution, especially the interaction between man and the environment). Additionally, the information obtained from these studies is very useful to plan future excavation works on the site.

The politics of war memory in radical Basque nationalism

Abstract:This paper examines how war memory has been appropriated, interpreted and domesticated by radical Basque nationalism. The so-called patriotic left presents an interesting case study because of its need to justify ETA's use of unconventional methods and political violence. The politics of war memory places violent conflicts in a historical continuum where Basques and Spaniards stand against each other. The memory of the Carlist Wars, the Spanish Civil War and ETA's violent campaign are all used both as an ethnic boundary between Basques and Spaniards and as a powerful mobilizing agent. The conflict between the Basque insurgents and the Spanish state is celebrated as a narrative of heroic past wars and redemptive sacrifices, hence removing the need to reflect on the usefulness of the armed struggle.

Abstract:The practice of busking and street music performance is becoming key to the identity of cities. However, although the spatial configuration and acoustics of historic city centres are interrelated, few rigorous studies have been undertaken on this area. The paper presents the results of a quantitative and comparative analysis of the space syntax configuration and on-site sound recordings in four main open environments within the inner core of Barcelona. The aim of this work is to highlight the conflict points between outdoor acoustics and movement flows in order to inform future designs and management of those public spaces.

Ritual Life of an Altar-Home: A Photographic Essay on Transformational Places and Technologies

Abstract:This photographic essay brings evidence of the visible material and invisible spectral changes altar-homes, altar-rooms, and altars undergo, as interactions with them are experienced by ritual participants. Focusing on the visual documentation I gathered while working at the altar-home of Haydée, a Puerto Rican espiritista bruja, I explore the matter-of-fact, almost banal technologies by means of which healers may initiate transformational processes that sacralize their altar-homes, creating spatial proxies of distant sacred places in order to summon and cajole spirits to intervene in human affairs. In sum, this is an exploration of the ritual labor that enters in constituting the ritual life of altars, or how altars "do."
Appropriating Video Surveillance for Art and Environmental Awareness: Experiences from ARTiVIS

Abstract:Arts, Real-Time Video and Interactivity for Sustainability (ARTiVIS) is an ongoing collaborative research project investigating how real-time video, DIY surveillance technologies and sensor data can be used as a tool for environmental awareness, activism and artistic explorations. The project consists of a series of digital contexts for aesthetic contemplation of nature and civic engagement, aiming to foster awareness and empowerment of local populations through DIY surveillance. At the core of the ARTIVIS efforts are a series of interactive installations (namely B-Wind!, Hug@tree and Play with Fire), that make use of surveillance technologies and real-time video as raw material to promote environmental awareness through the emotion generated by real-time connections with nature. Throughout the project development, the surveillance concept has been shifting from the use of surveillance technology in a centralized platform, to the idea of veillance with distributed peer-to-peer networks that can be used for science and environmental monitoring. In this paper we present the history of the ARTiVIS project, related and inspiring work, describe ongoing research work and explore the present and future challenges of appropriating surveillance technology for artistic, educational and civic engagement purposes.
Architecture, urban planning and collective identity: Bilbao as a case study

Abstract:The emergence of a collective identity, a complex social and psychological process, may be linked to a specific place and a particular urban layout. Architecture demarcates interior and exterior spaces that not only frame our relationships but can also generate a mirror image of the internal world. The authors examine relevant contributions from the sparse psychoanalytic literature on this subject, to support their hypothesis that changes to a city's landscape, design, or architecture, when wholeheartedly embraced by its citizens, can serve to forge a new collective identity that helps to deal with absence, pain, and loss. They present the city of Bilbao, Spain, as a case study.
