Abstract:Conductive-polymer coated fabrics have been investigated as intelligent materials in the past years. In this paper, a flexible strain sensor from polypyrrole-coated fabrics which is featured with high sensitivity, good stability is reported. The strategies used for enhancing the sensitivity and stability of the sensor include: (a) the formation of thin coatings of polypyrrole (PPy) on the surface of fabrics using the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method, (b) low temperature polymerization of pyrrole, (c) introduction of large docecyl benzene sulfonate anion in PPy film and (d) annealing of the PPy-coated conductive fabrics. The conductivity–strain tests reveal that the developed sensor exhibits a high strain sensitivity of ∼80 for a deformation as large as 50%, while its good stability is supported by the small changes in conductivity and sensitivity over a storage time of 9 months. The effect of the temperature and humidity on the conductivity of the strain sensor is investigated.

Abstract:Polyaniline nanotube was prepared with aid of lactic acid assembly. A chemical prototype sensor was constructed based on nanotube-structured polyaniline and two typical structured chemical sensors, one is an interdigital electrodes on flexible polymer substrate, the other is a highly sensitive quartz resonators. The gas-sensing behavior of the two typical sensors to some organic vapors operating at room temperature was investigated. Results showed rapid response, and good reversibility of these two typical sensors. The response time is 10-20 s, the reversible time is about 100 s. This study provides a simple approach for preparation of materials needed for a chemical sensor to selected organic volatiles with rapid response or organic flexible nanoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Harmless and breathable flexible humidity sensor has important applications in continuous and real-time detection of human physiological activities. In this work, with hydrophobic poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane as both the template and substrate and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide as a structure regulator, polyaniline (PANI) was unilaterally deposited on a PVDF microporous membrane to facilely fabricate a single-sided integrated flexible humidity sensor (IFHS). Such IFHS is featured with unique micro/nano structure and good air permeability. Moreover, it exhibits good humidity sensing properties at room temperature including fast response, small hysteresis and stable response even under bending deformation. The flexible sensor could realize non-contact monitoring of human respiration and speaking activities. Unilateral deposition of PANI and good breathability of IFHS avoids direct contact between PANI and human skin, thus averting harms to human and minimizing the deterioration of humidity sensing properties of PANI layer. The simple method is universal to the preparation of single-sided, integrated, breathable, nontoxic and fast response wearable humidity sensors based on PANI and hydrophobic microporous polymer membranes, offering useful references for the construction of advanced flexible sensors.

Abstract:This paper describes a flexible pressure sensor based on polypyrrole(PPy)-Cotton composites, in which PPy is grown on cellulose fibers of cotton pads via an in situ vapor growth method, which is beneficial to the homogeneity of the composites. The resulting devices exhibits rapid response and recovery speed, the response and recovery times are 220 ms and 240 ms, respectively. The optimal PPy-Cotton Pads (PCPs) sensor shows low detection limit, which is about 50 Pa. At the same time, it exhibits excellent durability in the measurement of repeated loading-unloading pressure over 1000 cycles. The resultant sensor can be attached on different positions of body and applied to recording physiological signals, such as wrist pulse, vocal cord vibration, respiration and eyes blinking. Finally, a 4 × 4 pressure sensor array shows that the PCPs sensor has capability in pressure distribution detection and represents great potential in the fields of wearable electronics and biomedical devices.

Abstract:Flexible electronic sensors composed of conductive material and flexible film have attracted increasing attention in decades due to its commercial, medical and scientific value. However, the poor interfacial bonding robustness between conductive materials and flexible film influences widely practical application of sensors. It is still a great challenge to fabricate a self-adhesive conductive film. Herein, we report a freestanding and self-adhesive bovine serum albumin/polypyrrole (BSA/PPy) hybrid film at the air/water interface. It is discovered that the PPy nanoparticles aggregate uniformly on the BSA film that is formed by amyloid-like BSA aggregation. The BSA/PPy film was integrated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film to fabricate flexible electronic sensors. The test indicates that the BSA/PPy film-based sensor could tolerate 500 cycles of bending without the resistance performance variation. The BSA/PPy film functions as a key mediator to dynamically tune the PPy conductance in response to external pressures and strains. The sensors exhibit ability for detecting tiny acoustic vibration, real-time human motion, physiological behavior and for differentiating various breathing pattern. Our strategy may open a pathway to readily construct flexible electronic sensors toward practical applications.

Abstract:Polyurethane (PU) sponge with high elasticity and reproducibility shows promising application in flexible electronic devices. However, the poor conductivity and high flammability limit its application field, which also pose a potential threat to human health. Here, a flexible sponge sensor based on PU and polypyrrole-wrapped halloysite nanotubes (PPy@HNTs) was successfully fabricated by the dip coating technology. The PPy-modified HNTs showed strong binding ability on the PU sponge by employing N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) as an interfacial solvent. PPy@HNTs can well adhere on the surface of the PU sponge, which endow excellent structural stability to the flexible sponge sensor after 5000 cycles. The response and recovery times during the sensitivity experiment of the flexible sponge sensor are 265.63 and 265.62 ms, respectively. The flexible sponge sensor can effectively detect various physical activities, such as walking, facial expression, and gesture. It can be used as an analytical balance for quality monitoring. Moreover, the flexible sponge sensor exhibits excellent photothermal performance, which is reflected in the good relationship between resistance change and laser irradiation time as well as power intensity. The coating of PPy@HNTs also significantly improved the flame retardancy of the PU sponge. This work developed a mild, high-efficiency, and simple preparation method of flexible sponge sensors, and the prepared sensor displayed multifunctional applications such as biological detection and electronic balances.

Flexible Humidity Sensor Based on Electrochemically Polymerized Polypyrrole

Abstract:Environmental sensing is an important task in the development of infrastructures for the applications of the Internet of things. In this work, we introduce a flexible humidity sensor based on electrochemically polymerized polypyrrole to absorb or desorb water vapors to detect relative humidity (RH). A test platform was built to mix the different amounts of dry and wet air for the relative humidity ranging from 15% to 95%. Experimental results show that the response time from 20% to 90% RH of the sensor was 505 seconds and the recovery time from 90% to 20% RH was 328 seconds with good repeatability during three cycles. The wide dynamic range, excellent repeatability and reasonable response time make the sensor applicable for home monitoring applications. Furthermore, the flexible sensor is suitable for embedding into wallpaper or decorations for promising future systems to map the environmental status of buildings and homes.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a novel flexible gas sensor based on polypyrrole (PPy) coated SnO2 nanoparticles that can be employed to detect low concentrations of NO2 (0.5-5 ppm) at room temperature. This low-cost, easy-fabrication and wearable gas sensor was fabricated on PET substrate. The sensitive film was formed by first drop casting the solution of SnO2 nanoparticles and FeCl3 on the as patterned interdigital electrodes on PET substrate; then the substrate was exposed to saturated pyrrole vapor for 3h to obtain PPy coated SnO2 sensitive film. Our sensor shows good performance in detecting low concentration NO2 and the estimated detection limit is about 100 ppb at room temperature.

Abstract:A novel flexible thermocouple film sensor on a polyimide substrate is proposed that is simple and flexible for monitoring the respiratory signal. Several thermocouples were connected in series and patterned on the polyimide substrate, and each one is formed by copper and a constant line connected to each other at two nodes. The respiratory signal was measured by the output voltage, which resulted from the temperature difference between the hot and cold junctions. The sensors were fabricated with surface-microfabrication technology with three sputtering steps. The measurement results showed that the peak voltage decreased by 90% in the case of apnea compared with normal breathing. The sensor has potential application for wearable detection of sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS).

Abstract:Flexible electronic sensors, which can perceive and respond to mechanical stimuli, are essential components of wearable electronics. Here, the utilization of biomimetic microstructures from natural lotus leaves and freestanding polypyrrole/silver (PPy/Ag) hybrid films are demonstrated to design and fabricate multifunctional sensors. The sensors consist of sandwich structure, including the surface of the designed polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) films with biomimetic micropattern and the interlayer of the conductive PPy/Ag film (PDMS/PPy/Ag/PDMS). It is discovered that the polypyrrole and silver nanoparticles (PPy/AgNPs) aggregated and the freestanding PPy/Ag hybrid film formed at the air/water interface under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. The PPy/Ag film exhibits well electrical conductivity, which could be used for fabricating the sensors to detect pressures, stretching and bending forces. The sensors based on the micropatterned PDMS substrate show well strain gauge factor (≈21 for 18 ~ 20 strain) and pressure sensitivity (≈0.58 kPa−1 in 300 ~ 400 Pa) due to the effective contact areas. The sensors attract considerable attention for their application in monitoring finger pressure, respiration, acoustic vibrations, and real-time pulse wave at the current detection range from 0 to 60 mA. The results indicate that the PPy/Ag-based sensors with high sensitivity have promising potential for the future applications in wearable electronics and human-machine devices.

Abstract:In recent years, the research of flexible sensors has become a hot topic in the field of wearable technology, attracting the attention of many researchers. However, it is still a difficult challenge to prepare low-cost and high-performance flexible sensors by a simple process. Three-dimensional spacer fabric (SF) are the ideal substrate for flexible pressure sensors due to its good compression resilience and high permeability (5747.7 mm/s, approximately 10 times that of cotton). In this paper, Thermoplastic polyurethane/Polypyrrole/Polydopamine/Space Fabric (TPU/PPy/PDA/SF) composite fabrics were prepared in a simple in-situ polymerization method by sequentially coating polydopamine (PDA) and Polypyrrole (PPy) on the surface of SF, followed by spin-coating of different polymers (thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and Ecoflex) on the PPy/PDA/SF surface. The results showed that the TPU/PPy/PDA/SF pressure sensors prepared by spin-coating TPU at 900 rpm at a concentration of 0.3 mol of pyrrole monomer (py) and a polymerization time of 60 min have optimum sensing performance, a wide working range (0–10 kPa), high sensitivity (97.28 kPa−1), fast response (60 ms), good cycling stability (>500 cycles), and real-time motion monitoring of different parts of the body (e.g., arms and knees). The TPU/PPy/PDA/SF piezoresistive sensor with high sensitivity on a highly permeable spacer fabric base developed in this paper has promising applications in the field of health monitoring.

Flexible and Multifunctional Pressure/Gas Sensors with Polypyrrole-Coated TPU Hierarchical Array

Abstract:A promising strategy is proposed for fabricating flexible pressure/gas sensors, which have a microprotuberance and microwrinkle structure at micropillars on their sensing substrates. The sensing substrates were prepared by compression molding thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU; an industrial grade polymer) and subsequent pyrrole polymerization. Benefiting from the hierarchical structure on the sensing substrates, the flexible sensors exhibit high performances in detecting both pressure and ammonia (NH3). Mechanism for the functionalities of the hierarchical structure of the pressure sensors was analyzed. Such unique hierarchical structure endows the interlocked pressure sensor by assembling the substrates prepared at 60 min polymerization time with a relatively high sensitivity in a wider linearity range (1.15 kPa-1, 0-800 Pa), a lower detection limit of 6.2 Pa, and shorter response and recovery times (26/28 ms). The combination of stronger interfacial interaction between the TPU and polypyrrole layer, the mutual support of the interlocked micropillars, and the inherent high resilience of TPU endows the pressure sensor with lower hysteresis, good repeatability and stability, and higher durability (10,000 cycles). The interlocked pressure sensor can detect full-range human physiological activities from weak physiological signals (such as face muscle contraction, heartbeat, and breath) to body movements (such as head, elbow, and foot movement). The gas sensor assembled with the hierarchical sensing substrate prepared at 60 min polymerization time exhibits selective, stable, and faster sensing responses to NH3. The proposed facile and cost-effective preparation strategy can be an excellent candidate for fabricating high-performance and multifunctional sensors.
Respiratory fabric sensor based on the side luminescence and photosensitivity mechanism of polymer optical fibers

Abstract:It is significant to monitor respiration conveniently and in real time for people suffering from respiratory diseases. Polymer optical fibers (POFs) have the advantages of flexibility and light weight, which is highly desirable for wearable respiratory monitoring. However, in most current applications, the POFs are stitched on the textile substrates in the form of macro-bending. This method is complex to fix the bending with certain curvatures and uncomfortable compared with the POF sensors woven into the textile. In this paper, a respiratory fabric sensor based on the side luminescence and photosensitivity mechanism of POF is proposed and demonstrated. The 750µm-diameter POFs were woven into a fabric as warp and laser marking was performed at their designed positions to make them release or couple light. The spacing change between the POFs caused by the respiratory movement accordingly makes the light intensity change in the photosensitive fiber. We chose four fabric widths (10cm, 8cm, 6cm and 4cm) and four fabric weaves (plain weave, honeycomb weave, 1/3 right twill weave and 8/3 warp satin weave) to implement the full-factor experiment for exploring the measurement effect of the respiratory fabric sensor. The result is that the fabric with width of 4cm and weave of 8/3 warp satin is optimal. The calm and deep respiratory tests of the human chest and abdomen in sitting and standing posture were carried out and the test performance of the fabric sensor is almost comparable to that of the medical monitor. The proposed respiratory fabric sensor is comfortable, easily woven and high in precision, which is expected to realize industrialized scale production.

Abstract:Flexible pressure sensors are an essential component in artificial systems to monitor human health. Recently, flexible pressure sensors with micronanostructures in interlocked geometry have attracted extensive attention because they effectively improve the sensing performance. However, it is a challenge that the fabrication methods are complex and expensive, and the layered interface between microstructure and nanostructure is unstable. Here, a flexible pressure sensor with an interlocked polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) micropillars array combined secondary nanoprotrusions on their surfaces is proposed, which can be shaped in one step with the merits of simplicity, controllability, and low cost. The unique combined micronanostructures ensure the sensor with a wide linear range (0–32 kPa), relatively high piezoresistive sensitivity ( /kPa), low detection limit (15 Pa), fast response speed (response time is 56 ms and relaxation time is 140 ms), and excellent stability (>1000 cycles). These superior properties set a foundation for applying the sensor in detecting various human physiological signals from pulse to joint deformation. Based on this sensor, a smart mask integrated system is proposed, displaying and recording breathing conditions in real time. These results demonstrate that the sensor can be used in health monitoring and disease diagnosis, as well as its potential application in other wearable devices.

Abstract:Flexible sensors are of great significance in wearable electronic devices. Herein, this work solves the problems of unfriendly and high cost materials and not easy to recycle conductive parts. Multi-functional conductive polyurethane (PU) foam has been constructed based on lignin, PU, and MWCNTs. Lignin is widely available and environmentally friendly, which endows polyurethane foam with degradable properties. The sensor exhibited excellent resistance change performance in the ultra-wide compression range from 0 to 90%. After 2000 cycles of compression test, the resistance change curve was still stable, and then the resistance returned to the initial value. The detection pressure was as high as 275.95 kPa. This sensor can detect a minimum deformation of 0.23%. The gauge factor value is as high as 2.75 in the strain range of 30% to 60% of compression deformation. It does not change shape under 90% cyclic compression strain, and does not change micro surface morphology after washing in distilled water for 12 hours. The sensor can not only detect large-scale movements of human limbs and joints but also detect weak physiological activities such as mouth opening, swallowing, breathing, and pulse. At the same time, it has good repeatability and reproducibility for throat vibration caused by human pronunciation and for some non-contact movements (such as blowing and vibration). Finally, because MWCNTs@LPUF is degradable in an alkaline environment, MWCNTs can also be recycled and used. MWCNTs@LPUF sensors are environmentally friendly, recyclable, sensitive and have excellent environmental stability, enabling them to have great potential for future application in the fields of flexible wearable electronics and healthcare.

Abstract:Nowadays, there are many researches on flexible humidity sensors based on different composites, such as polymer with graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes as conductive fillers. Herein, a flexible wearable device used for humidity detection and breath monitoring was fabricated based on the molecular designable thermoplastic polyamide elastomer (TPAE). TPAE is block copolymers consisting of the polyamide hard segments and the polyether soft segments. Among them, the hard segments (PA1212 or PA6) form the crosslinking network providing resilience, and the soft segments composed of PPO and PEO endow TPAE with flexibility and solvent-responsiveness. The resistance of TPAE-based humidity sensor decreases with the increase of relative humidity (RH), exhibiting negative humidity sensitivity. Besides, it has a wide humidity monitoring range (11 %RH ∼ 91 %RH) and good fitting degree of R 2 > 0.99 which is hardly influenced by bending deformation. When the humidity sensor was exposed to organic vapor (e.g. ethanol), it exhibited a faster response of astonishing 4 s. This novel block copolymer not only shows good humidity sensing performance in many aspects, but also provides a novel strategy and approach for the preparation of the humidity sensing materials afterwards.

Abstract:With the advent of 5G and the Internet of Things era, sensitive and stable sensors have begun to develop rapidly, which are important substantial fundaments of smart medical care. In this study, based on the positive temperature coefficient (PTC) in conductive polymer composites (CPC), a novel polyolefin elastomer (POE)/carbon fiber (CF) composite was prepared. By regulating the rheological behavior of the polymer matrix, we realized its controllable thermal expansion in the temperature field and finally realized the reversible construction–destruction of the conductive CF network. Under optimal molecular weight conditions, the POE/CF PTC sensor showed a high sensitivity of 0.11 °C–1 and stability. It was also demonstrated that the heat transfer efficiency of the composite material played an essential role in the sensitivity of the as-prepared PTC sensor. Most impressively, we have assembled an invisible respiratory monitoring device based on the POE/CF composite to achieve real-time monitoring of human breathing, which displayed wide potential prospects in thermal monitoring and provided good prospects for micron-scale functional composites.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Monitoring respiration is a pivotal way to sense the health of the human body and deal with respiratory diseases. Here, we utilize the porous graphdiyne (GDY) material to construct printed respiration sensors suitable for life and health monitoring. These sensors exhibit ultrasensitive responses and rapid recovery performance under real-time respiratory conditions, realizing non-contact detection with a long distance of 40 cm. Even the instantaneous change of weak fingertip moisture can also be easily monitored by such respiratory sensors. Synchronous density functional theory calculations reveal the critical role of GDY's unique acetylene structure on the easy adsorption/desorption of water molecules, which results in enhanced conductivity during the entire sensing process. These results provide a new carbon-based material as ink to print ultrasensitive respiration sensors, which can be used to develop large-scale industrialized integrated smart breathing masks or skin monitors, significantly expanding the prospects of carbon materials in multifunctional electronic skin.

Abstract:Flexible pressure sensors have attracted tremendous attention for their various potential applications in wearable electronics, personal health monitoring, disease diagnosis, and smart electronic skin (E-skin). However, the preparation of pressure sensors with high flexibility, lightweight, breathability, favorable biocompatibility, and excellent sensing performance for comfortable and comprehensive human physiological movement monitoring is still a great challenge and highly desired. Herein, we present a biocompatible and breathable all-fiber-based piezoresistive sensor with high sensitivity. The device is elaborately assembled from a porous polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofiber film impregnated with conductive MXene nanosheets (MXene/PVDF) as the sensitive layer, and a porous PVDF nanofiber film with magnetron sputtered Ag interdigital electrode (Ag/PVDF) as the electrode layer, with polyimide (PI) introduced in between as the insulation layer. The all-PVDF nanofiber structure enables the sensor to demonstrate excellent flexibility, reliable breathability, and favorable biocompatibility. Remarkably, benefitting from the insulation layer, the sensitivity of the sensor is further enhanced (up to 1970.65 kPa −1 ), which is about 13 times that without the insulation layer. Moreover, the sensor also exhibits other excellent characteristics such as rapid response/recovery time (10/20 ms) and excellent cycling stability (10000 cycles). These superior performances lay a foundation for the application of comprehensive human motion monitoring and pressure spatial distribution detection. Our study provides an effective strategy for fabricating flexible pressure sensors with good comprehensive properties in the field of intelligent wearable electronics.

Abstract:Humidity sensors are crucial in sectors such as environmental sustainability, industrial production, and healthcare. The fabrication of sandwich-type humidity sensors that can serve as substrates, sensing materials, and electrodes remains a focus of effort in the healthcare sector now. This research entails the synthesis of rhombus-patterned flexible nanofiber membranes (PPZN) utilizing polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) as the foundational substrates, while employing polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a structural modulator and hydrophilic modifier. The fabrication process involved the utilization of electrospinning technique for membrane production. Furthermore, polyaniline (PANI) is in-situ polymerized onto rhombus-patterned nanofiber membrane to form a core-sheath structure (PPZN), which serves as an electrode to produce a rhombus-patterned flexible self-supported PVDF-based humidity sensor (YPPZN). The combination of hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties facilitates the transfer of water molecules. At the same time, the unique diamond structure and high surface area provide favorable channels for the transportation of water molecules. YPPZN offers a broad range of relative humidity for operation (13%–93% RH), excellent sensitivity, and quick response and recovery times (20s/75s). The YPPZN humidity sensor likewise provides excellent flexibility and dependability, which can be configured into an arch inside a mask for ongoing real-time monitoring of human respiratory parameters.
