Abstract:Three challenges remain unsettled for current flexible energy storage devices. One is that most developed devices are not soft enough to conform various deformations; another is that they can hardly guarantee a stable energy output when being dynamically deformed―most of the ever-reported tests on flexibility are performed under static conditions; the third is that they lack sufficient toughness at device level, meaning they are vulnerable to severe mechanical stresses. We believe these problems must be well settled before wearable devices can be practically applied. Here we report a hydrogel with excellent energy-dissipating ability that can be simultaneously used as high-performance electrolyte, super-tough separator and highly effective electrode protector for supercapacitors. The developed supercapacitor is highly soft and super tough at device level. It can well maintain its stable output when being dynamically bent and exhibits high resistance to severe mechanical stimuli including blade-cut, hammering, etc. It can be arbitrarily deformed into irregular shapes while keeping original performances. Moreover, it can even survive extremely harsh conditions including 6 days’ treading and 50 times of car run-over without notable deterioration in capacitance and long-term stability. This super tough supercapacitor shows great potential in truly wearable applications involving severe mechanical stresses and impacts.
Advanced deformable all-in-one hydrogel supercapacitor based on conducting polymer: Toward integrated mechanical and capacitive performance

Abstract:The inception of flexible supercapacitors that can work steadily under large deformation has been a research hotspot in recent years. To improve the device's stability, one needs to find innovative solutions to inevitable delaminations of electroactive components, which are resulted by relative displacement under external force. Herein, an extensive all-in-one hydrogel-based supercapacitor is designed. Based on the special physical properties of hydrogels, the polypyrrole-polyvinyl alcohol/dilute sulphuric acid-polypyrrole (PHP) sandwiched device shows the harmonious mechanical and electrical properties. When the tensile strain of PHP reaches to 110%, the areal capacitance still maintains at 90%. Similarly, the high areal capacitance retention under compression and twisting also verifies that the PPy active layer tightly permeates and adheres to the PVA-H2SO4 electrolyte layer. In addition to the fascinating mechanical properties, the undetectable contact angle reveals a superhydrophilic surface which is beneficial to provide an easy access for electrolyte ions, thus enhancing the electrochemical performance. Moreover, a stable cycle performance (97% after 10000 cycles) is obtained due to the excellent water retention ability which prevents the loss of electrolyte. The maximum extended voltage window is 1 V with the power density of 500 μW cm−2 (the energy density of 6.94 μW h cm−2). These hydrogel-based supercapacitors can be immune to the harm caused by external forces and maintain good mechanical integrity and electrochemical stability. Developing the hydrogel-based supercapacitors can provide a fresh perspective on multifunction applications and herald a new territory for flexible energy storage devices.

Abstract:The supercapacitors with conventional multilayer structure exhibit a large contact resistance and tend to delaminate because of the relative displacement under external force. Herein, the all-in-one flexible supercapacitors are fabricated by integrating chemically crosslinked hydrogel electrolytes with conducting copolymer electrodes. The hydrogel electrolyte is prepared by chemically crosslinking reaction of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) with glutaraldehyde (GA) where the hydroxyl groups (-OH) of PVA and PEG react with aldehyde groups (-CHO) of GA to form acetal or hemiacetal in sulphuric acid solution. The prepared hydrogel electrolyte exhibits better mechanical properties (tensile strength of 36 KPa under strain of 117%) and remarkable ionic conductivity (67.1 mS cm−1) than pure PVA hydrogel. Based on this gel electrolyte, a novel flexible supercapacitor with an all-in-one (electrode-electrolyte-electrode) configuration is designed by in situ polymerization of poly (pyrrole-co-aniline) onto PVA/PEG gel electrolyte to achieve exceptional electrochemical performance. This all-in-one configuration can maintain fast charge-carrier transportation and good structural stability. The resulting device shows a large specific capacitance of 773 mF cm−2 at the current density of 0.2 mA cm−2, excellent energy density (54 μWh cm−2) and power density (100 μW cm−2). Under different bending angles or 1000 bending cycles, the capacitance of the device is maintained at 100% which owing to the all-in-one configuration can overcome the relative displacement and avoid the loss of electroactive materials from gel electrolytes when the device is bent. These findings present potential applications in flexible, wearable and smart energy storage devices.

Abstract:Most of the currently developed flexible energy storage devices lack sufficient flexibility to withstand various deformations, such as stretching, compression, and bending under the action of external forces. It also lacks sufficient and stable energy output. In this work, we use the flexible material hydrogel as electrode and electrolyte to design an all-hydrogel integrated flexible supercapacitor. Both the electrode and the electrolyte contain the same polyampholyte hydrogel P(NaSS-co-DMAEA-Q) matrix, making them possess superb self-adhesion due to the electrostatic interaction between the anion and cation group, and highly softness/toughness thanks to the energy-dissipative mechanism. The electrode of supercapacitor is a composite of activated carbon and hydrogel, which has excellent mechanical and electrical properties. Supercapacitors prepared from hydrogel electrodes and hydrogel electrolytes are inherently scalable/compressible, and simultaneously deliver high areal capacitance (128.9 mF cm−2 at 1 mV s−1 and 340.18 mF cm−2 at 0.1 mA cm−2) and maintain stable energy output. The combination of simple device structure, stable mechanical properties and excellent electrical properties makes flexible supercapacitors promising for applications in wearable electronics/devices and energy storage.

Abstract:All-solid-state flexible supercapacitors provide favourable conditions for the development of portable and wearable devices. The development of electrolytes with excellent self-healing, mechanical and electrochemical properties have become an effective strategy to address the significant mechanical strain and damage of conventional solid state supercapacitors. Herein, a novel PAM/β-CD/EMIMBF 4 hydrogel electrolyte with slide-ring structure and hydrogen bonds was synthesized by copolymerization method. The PAM/β-CD/EMIMBF 4 hydrogel exhibits outstanding ionic conductivity (35 mS cm -1 ), remarkable self-healing behavior (healing efficiency of 91.3%) and large tensile strain (over 1000%). Furthermore, the supercapacitor with PAM/β-CD/EMIMBF 4 hydrogel electrolyte has a large specific capacitance (124 F g -1 ) and maintains 82.9% of its initial value after 5000 cycles. This study designed a multifunctional hydrogel electrolyte, which provides a promising insight for the development of emerging electronic products with customization functions.

Abstract:Adhesion and stretchable hydrogel electrolytes have emerged as an ideal candidate in the fabrication of flexible all-solid-state supercapacitor. However, the conventional hydrogel electrolyte would inevitably deteriorate or even deactivate after mechanical damage (stretching and cutting) or dehydrating. As an alternative to overcome these limitations, we designed a dynamic elastic molecular double network (DN) hydrogel electrolyte consisting of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(acrylic amide-co-2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid) (P(AM-AMPS)) networks. Glycerin was introduced into the PVA/P(AM-AMPS) system to enhance the inter-chain physically-crosslinked network. This DN hydrogel electrolyte exhibited remarkable stretchability (over 894%), strong adhesion (37.00 kPa to carbon materials) and high ionic conductivity (3.85 S m−1). In particular, the dynamic physically-crosslinked network endowed hydrogel electrolyte eminent mechanical tolerance. The toughness of hydrogel kept stable in 10 times 500% strain loading–unloading tensile test. Along with the CNT electrodes, a highly flexible all-solid-state supercapacitor was prepared by using our developed DN hydrogel as electrolyte. This hydrogel-based supercapacitor exhibited high capacitance (85.25 mF cm−2 at a current density of 0.5 mA cm−2). More importantly, benefiting from the unique network structure of hydrogel electrolyte, a steady bonding interface between electrode and electrolyte was constructed. Electrochemical performance of supercapacitor could be maintained in different working conditions. The capacitance of a device was stable upon stretching (200% strain) or bending (angle of 0–180°). In addition, hydrogel based supercapacitor could be resumed after dehydrating or cutting by accident. Our results provide a new slight into multifunctional all-solid-state supercapacitor preparation. We hope this hydrogel will promote the development of wearable energy storage.

Abstract:The development of eco-friendly and light-weighted solid-state electrolytes with a wide electrochemical window is critical to apply flexible energy storage devices for powering wearable and implantable electronics. Herein, we report the first demonstration of a quasi solid-state hydrogel electrolyte leveraging the formation of "interfacial wetting water" for facile two-dimensional ion transports instead of typical diffusion in bulk-like water. The hydrogel electrolyte exhibits a wide electrochemical window (2.5 V) in electrical double layer capacitance (EDLC) cell with an extremely effective low salt concentration (6.8 m), 3.1 times lower than the well-known water-in-salt electrolyte (WiSE, 21 m), and a small water retention (24 wt%). Besides, a significant toughness (ultimate tensile strength of 420 kPa and elongation of 6,000%) is achieved. The flexible supercapacitor demonstrates the high specific energy density of 39.1 Wh•kg−1 at 0.5 A•g−1 and 7.6 Wh•kg−1 at power density of 6218 W•kg−1, as well as a subdued self-discharge profile. This interfacial water dominated hydrogel electrolyte provides new directions in designing high-voltage hydrogel electrolyte for safe and sustainable soft energy storage devices.

Abstract:Hydrogels with high ionic conductivity consisting of a cross-linked polymer network swollen in water are very promising to be used as an electrolyte for all-solid-state supercapacitors. However, there are rather few flexible supercapacitors using ionic conducting hydrogel electrolytes reported to date. In this work, highly flexible and ionic conducting polyacrylamide hydrogels were synthesized through a simple approach. On using the ionic hydrogels as the electrolyte, the resulting supercapacitors not only exhibited a high specific capacitance but also showed a long self-discharge time (over 10 hours to the half of original open-circuit voltage) and a low leakage current. These newly-developed all-solid-state supercapacitors can be bent, knot, and kneaded for 5000 cycles without performance decay, suggesting excellent flexibility and mechanical stability. These all-solid-state supercapacitors can also be easily tailored into strip-like supercapacitors without a short circuit, which provides an efficient approach to fabricate wearable energy storage devices.

Abstract:Flexible supercapacitors can be ideal flexible power sources for wearable electronics due to their ultra-high power density and high cycle life. In daily applications, wearable devices will inevitably cause damage or short circuit during bending, stretching, and compression. Therefore, it is necessary to develop proper energy storage devices to meet the requirements of various wearable electronic devices. Herein, Poly(vinyl alcohol) linked various content of phytic acid (PVA-PAx) hydrogels are synthesized with high transparency and high toughness by a one-step freeze-thaw method. The effects of different raw material ratios and agents on the ionic conductivity and mechanical properties of the hydrogel electrolyte are investigated. The PVA-PA21% with 2 M H2SO4 solution (PVA-PA21%-2 M H2SO4) shows a high ionic conductivity of 62.75 mS cm−1. Based on this, flexible supercapacitors fabricated with PVA-PA21%-2 M H2SO4 hydrogel present a high specific capacitance at 1 A g−1 after bending at 90° (64.8 F g−1) and for 30 times (67.3 F g−1), respectively. Moreover, the device shows energy densities of 13.5 Wh kg−1 and 14.0 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 300 W kg−1 after bending at 90° and for 30 times during 10,000 cycles. It provides inspiration for the design and development of electrolytes for related energy electrochemical devices.

Abstract:Flexible supercapacitors are an important portable energy storage but suffer from low capacitance, inability to stretch, etc. Therefore, flexible supercapacitors must achieve higher capacitance, energy density, and mechanical robustness to expand the applications. Herein, a hydrogel electrode with excellent mechanical strength was created by simulating the collagen fiber network and proteoglycan in cartilage using silk nanofiber (SNF) network and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The Young's modulus and breaking strength of the hydrogel electrode increased by 205 % and 91 % compared with PVA hydrogel owing to the enhanced effect of the bionic structure, respectively, which are 1.22 MPa and 1.3 MPa. The fracture energy and fatigue threshold reached 1813.5 J/m2 and 1585.2 J/m2, respectively. The SNF network effectively connected carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and polypyrrole (PPy) in series, affording a capacitance of 13.62 F/cm2 and energy density of 1.2098 mWh/cm2. This capacitance is the highest among currently reported PVA hydrogel capacitors, which can maintain >95.2 % after 3000 charge-discharge cycles. This capacitance Notably, the cartilage-like structure endowed the supercapacitor with high resilience; thus, the capacitance remained >92.1 % under 150 % deformation and >93.35 % after repeated stretching (3000 times), which was far superior to that of other PVA-based supercapacitors. Overall, this effective bionic strategy can endow supercapacitors with ultrahigh capacitance and effectively ensure the mechanical reliability of flexible supercapacitors, which will help expand the applications of supercapacitors.
Highly Deformable, Conductive Double-Network Hydrogel Electrolytes for Durable and Flexible Supercapacitors.

Abstract:Developing flexible energy storage devices with the ability to retain capacitance under extreme deformation is promising but remains challenging. Here, we report the development of a durable supercapacitor with remarkable capacitance retention under mechanical deformation by utilizing a physical double-network (DN) hydrogel as an electrolyte. The first network is hydrophobically associating polyacrylamide cross-linked by nanoparticles, and the second network is Zn2+ cross-linked alginate. Through soaking such a DN hydrogel into a high concentration of ZnSO4 solution, a highly deformable electrolyte with good conductivity is fabricated, which also shows adhesion to diverse surfaces. Directly attaching the hydrogel electrolyte to two pieces of an active carbon cloth facilely produces a flexible supercapacitor with a high specific capacitance and theoretical energy density. Remarkable capacitance retention under tension, compression, and bending is observed for the supercapacitor, which can also maintain above 87% of the initial capacitance after 4000 charge-discharge cycles. This study provides a simple way to fabricate hydrogel electrolytes for deformable yet durable supercapacitors, which is expected to inspire the development of next-generation flexible energy storage devices.

A high-voltage quasi-solid-state flexible supercapacitor with a wide operational temperature range based on a low-cost "water-in-salt" hydrogel electrolyte

Abstract:Recently, "water-in-salt" electrolytes have provided a huge boost to the realization of high energy density for water-based supercapacitors by broadening the electrochemical stability window. However, the high cost and low conductivity of high concentration LiTFSI greatly restrict the possibility of practical application. Herein, we adopt a new strategy to develop a low-cost and quasi-solid-state polyelectrolyte hydrogel accommodating a superhigh concentration of CH3COOK through in situ polymerization, avoiding the problem that many conventional polymers cannot accommodate ultra-high ion concentration. The polyelectrolyte hydrogel with 24 M CH3COOK exhibits a conductivity of up to 35.8 mS cm-1 and a stretchability of 950%. With advanced N-doped graphene hydrogel electrodes, the assembled supercapacitor yields a voltage window of 2.1 V with an energy density of 33.0 W h kg-1 and superior cyclability with 88.2% capacitance retention at 4 A g-1 after 6000 cycles comparable to those supercapacitors using high-cost LiTFSI salts. Besides, the supercapacitor with excellent temperature stability in the range of -20 to 70 °C can light an LED for more than one minute. The assembled flexible device with the PAAK/CMC-24 M gel film sandwiched in between demonstrates excellent bendability from 0° to 180° and shows great potential for flexible/wearable electronic devices. Our feasible approach provides a new route for assembling quasi-solid-state flexible high-energy storage devices with "water-in-salt" electrolytes.
3D printable conductive polymer hydrogels with ultra-high conductivity and superior stretchability for free-standing elastic all-gel supercapacitors

Abstract:Conductive polymer hydrogels (CPHs), especially poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly (styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) hydrogels, have become research hotspot because they demonstrate tremendous application potential in cutting-edge technologies such as flexible electrochemical energy storage, bioelectronics, and wearable electronics due to their unique electrical, electrochemical and mechanical properties. However, the existing gelation strategies generally fail to achieve excellent electrical and mechanical properties simultaneously in PEDOT:PSS hydrogels and limit their broad applications. Herein, an effective gelation strategy is developed to achieve a kind of free-standing PEDOT:PSS hydrogels by double-additive induced physical cross-linking. Through the interconnection and entanglement between conductive PEDOT nanofibril chains in the physical cross-linking network, the electrical, mechanical and electrochemical properties can be synergistically optimized. The resulting PEDOT:PSS hydrogels simultaneously show ultra-high electrical conductivity, excellent mechanical stretchability, high resilience, low Young's moduli, superior swelling behavior, and extrusion 3D printability, demonstrating extensive applicability. As proof of concept applications, substrate-free, highly elastic all-gel supercapacitors (SCs) have been fabricated using the resulting PEDOT:PSS hydrogels as electrodes. The SCs exhibit simple structure, facile assembly process, high specific capacitance, excellent energy storage capacity, superior cyclic stability, and arbitrary deformability, holding great promise for wearable electronics.

Abstract:The development of flexible energy storage devices is critical while it remains challenging for wearable electronics. Herein, a new family of elastic and wearable ring-type supercapacitors is fabricated by winding aligned carbon nanotube/poly(3,4-ethyl-enedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) composite sheets onto an elastic polymer ring. The supercapacitor delivers a high specific capacitance of 134.8 F g 1 at a current density of 1 A g . Importantly, the specific capacitance has been well maintained after expanding and pressing, which endows the supercapacitor with unique advantages, e.g., it can be used for substrates with different sizes and shapes and may satisfy a variety of wearable applications as well as other fields.

Abstract:Elastic conducting hydrogel is a promising candidate for the construction of high-performance electronic devices because of the unique mechanical and electrical features of conducting hydrogel with three-dimensional network. But conducting polymers are considered to be inherently rigid due to the conjugated chains in the macromolecular structures, leading to poor processability. Making conducting polymer hydrogels elastic by a rational and facile design is paramount for the construction of remarkable electronic device. Here, elastic polypyrrole (PPy) hydrogels reinforced by TEMPO-oxidized cellulose are obtained in the presence of methyl orange and FeCl3 during the static polymerization and self-assembly process. The as-prepared hydrogels exhibit one-dimensional nanotubes-based porous networks with electric conductivity, high elasticity and mechanical stability. With this special design, the symmetric quasi-solid-state supercapacitor fabricated by PPy hydrogels reinforced by TEMPO-oxidized cellulose electrodes deliver good electrochemical performance and can be connected in series as an electronic circuit to light up a LED bulb. All of the characteristics of the resulting PPy hydrogels reinforced by TEMPO-oxidized cellulose open an avenue for potential energy storage applications.

Abstract:A lightweight, flexible, and highly efficient energy management strategy is a requisite for future flexible electronics. Herein, hollow polypyrrole/cellulose hybrid hydrogels featured with biphase porous structures, are firstly designed by in-situ implanting a hollow and continuous polypyrrole conducting network into porous cellulose hydrogels. Such hollow hybrid hydrogels show good mechanical strength and flexibility, enabling its ability to bear severe mechanical deformation without structural damage. Within the hybrid hydrogel, cellulose hydrogel acts as an interior electrolyte reservoir to host movable ions, biphase porous structure offers path for electrolyte ions, and hollow polypyrrole network is responsible for the electrochemical performance. As a result, a symmetrical supercapacitor assembled with the hollow hybrid hydrogels delivers optimized capacitive properties with a high specific capacitance, a good rate capability, and an enhanced cycling stability. Moreover, no evident loss in capacitance of the device is observed even bended at 180°. This work provides a design of flexible, low-cost, environmental-friendly and high-performance electrode materials for energy conversion and storage systems.

Abstract:Compressible solid‐state supercapacitors are emerging as promising power sources for next‐generation flexible electronics with enhanced safety and mechanical integrity. Highly elastic and compressible solid electrolytes are in great demand to achieve reversible compressibility and excellent capacitive stability of these supercapacitor devices. Here, a lithium ion‐conducting hydrogel electrolyte by integrating natural protein nanoparticles into polyacrylamide network is reported. Due to the synergistic effect of natural protein nanoparticles and polyacrylamide chains, the obtained hydrogel shows remarkable elasticity, high compressibility, and fatigue resistance properties. More significantly, the supercapacitor device based on this hydrogel electrolyte exhibits reversible compressibility under multiple cyclic compressions, working well under 80% strain for 1000 compression cycles without sacrificing its capacitive performance. This work offers a promising approach for compressible supercapacitors.

Abstract:Thermal runaway is a critical issue in energy storage process, leading to damage even failure of energy storage devices. Herein, active heat management, controllable energy storage and mechanical flexibility of supercapacitors are achieved by utilizing microgel-enhanced thermal-sensitive hydrogels as electrolytes. Because of the improved thermal sensitivity of microgel-enhanced hydrogel electrolyte, heat can be efficiently consumed by volume phase transition process, and meanwhile the energy storage process is also weakened by slowing down the ion transport. Reversibly controlled energy storage is also demonstrated in such supercapacitors. By varying temperature below and above volume phase transition temperature (VPTT) of hydrogel electrolytes, the specific capacitance is switched between 124 mF cm −2 and 9 mF cm −2 . Moreover, the hydrogel electrolytes also endow such supercapacitors mechanical flexibility and stable charge–discharge under a bending angle from 0 to 180° has been demonstrated. Overall, this work has provided a new clue to construct intelligent hydrogel devices by elegant structure design.

Abstract:With the rapid advancement of flexible, portable devices, hydrogel electrolytes have gained considerable attention as potential replacements for conventional liquid electrolytes. A hydrogel electrolyte was synthesised by cross-linking acrylic acid (AA), acrylamide (AM), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and zinc sulphate (ZnSO4). The formation of hydrogen bonds and chelate interactions between the P(AA-co-AM) polymer, CMC, and ZnSO4 created a robust network, enhancing the mechanical properties of the hydrogel electrolytes. Notably, the hydrogel electrolyte containing 0.6 % CMC demonstrated superior mechanical strength (compression strength of 1.22 MPa, tensile stress of 230 kPa, tensile strain of 424 %, adhesion strength of 1.98 MPa on wood). Additionally, the CMC/P(AA-co-AM) hydrogels exhibited commendable electrical performance (38 mS/cm) and a high gauge factor (2.9), enabling the precise detection of physiological activity signals through resistance measurements. The unique network structure of the hydrogel electrolyte also ensured a stable bonding interface between the electrode and the electrolyte. After 2000 charge-discharge cycles, the supercapacitor maintained good capacitance characteristics, with a capacitance retention rate of 71.21 % and a stable Coulombic efficiency of 98.85 %, demonstrating excellent cyclic stability. This study introduces a novel methodology for fabricating multifunctional all-solid-state supercapacitors and suggests that the hydrogel can significantly advance the development of wearable energy storage devices.
