Abstract:In this paper, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) modified BiOCl ultrathin nanosheets photocatalyst was synthesized via a facile solvothermal method. The structures, morphologies, optical properties, and photocatalytic properties were investigated in detail. The photocatalytic activity of the obtained CQDs modified BiOCl ultrathin nanosheets photocatalyst was evaluated by the degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) and rhodamine B (RhB) under ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared light irradiation. The CQDs/BiOCl materials exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance as compared with pure BiOCl and the 5 wt % CQDs/BiOCl materials displayed the best performance, which showed a broad spectrum of photocatalytic degradation activity. The main active species were determined to be hole and O2•- under visible light irradiation by electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis, XPS valence spectra, and free radicals trapping experiments. The crucial role of CQDs for the improved photocatalytic activity was mainly attributed to the superior electron transfer ability, enhanced light harvesting, and boosted catalytic active sites.

Carbon Quantum Dots Accelerating Surface Charge Transfer of 3D PbBiO2I Microspheres with Enhanced Broad Spectrum Photocatalytic Activity—Development and Mechanism Insight

Abstract:The development of a highly efficient, visible-light responsive catalyst for environment purification has been a long-standing exploit, with obstacles to overcome, including inefficient capture of near-infrared photons, undesirable recombination of photo-generated carriers, and insufficient accessible reaction sites. Hence, novel carbon quantum dots (CQDs) modified PbBiO2I photocatalyst were synthesized for the first time through an in-situ ionic liquid-induced method. The bridging function of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide ([Bmim]I) guarantees the even dispersion of CQDs around PbBiO2I surface, for synchronically overcoming the above drawbacks and markedly promoting the degradation efficiency of organic contaminants: (i) CQDs decoration harness solar photons in the near-infrared region; (ii) particular delocalized conjugated construction of CQDs strength via the utilization of photo-induced carriers; (iii) π–π interactions increase the contact between catalyst and organic molecules. Benefiting from these distinguished features, the optimized CQDs/PbBiO2I nanocomposite displays significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance towards the elimination of rhodamine B and ciprofloxacin under visible/near-infrared light irradiation. The spin-trapping ESR analysis demonstrates that CQDs modification can boost the concentration of reactive oxygen species (O2•−). Combined with radicals trapping tests, valence-band spectra, and Mott–Schottky results, a possible photocatalytic mechanism is proposed. This work establishes a significant milestone in constructing CQDs-modified, bismuth-based catalysts for solar energy conversion applications.

C-scheme electron transfer mechanism: An efficient ternary heterojunction photocatalyst carbon quantum dots/Bi/BiOBr with full ohmic contact

Abstract:With a facile one-pot solvothermal method, an efficient ternary heterojunction photocatalyst carbon quantum dots (CQDs)/Bi/BiOBr is firstly prepared. Ethylene glycol (EG) is used as the solvent and carbon source for the first time. At 190 °C for 3 h, while BiOBr is synthesized, EG is employed to prepare CQDs through bottom-up method. CQDs are grafted by a large number of functional groups with reducibility, which reduce some neighboring BiO+ to metal Bi. By modifying the solvothermal temperature and time, CQDs and Bi are in-situ controllably deposited on the surface of BiOBr microspheres. Due to different Fermi levels and work functions, the interfaces of CQDs, BiOBr and Bi are connected through ohmic junctions with low contact impedance. The hot electrons from Bi with surface plasmon resonance (SPR) properties, and electrons in the CB of BiOBr flow to CQDs, forming a C-scheme electron transfer mechanism. O2- from CQDs and h+ in the VB of BiOBr respectively attack the sites with higher and lower electron density in methyl orange (MO) molecule, resulting in its photodegradation into small molecular products.

Abstract:The Ti3C2 quantum dots (QDs)/oxygen-vacancy-rich BiOBr hollow microspheres composite photocatalyst was prepared using solvothermal synthesis and electrostatic self-assembly techniques. Together, Ti3C2QDs and oxygen vacancies (OVs) enhanced photocatalytic activity by broadening light absorption and improving charge transfer and separation processes, resulting in a significant performance boost. Meanwhile, the photocatalytic efficiency of Ti3C2 QDs/BiOBr-OVs is assessed to investigate its capability for oxygen evolution and degradation of tetracycline (TC) and Rhodamine B (RhB) under visible-light conditions. The rate of oxygen production is observed to be 5.1 times higher than that of pure BiOBr-OVs, while the photocatalytic degradation rates for TC and RhB is up to 97.27% and 99.8%, respectively. The synergistic effect between Ti3C2QDs and OVs greatly enhances charge separation, leading to remarkable photocatalytic activity. Furthermore, the hollow microsphere contributes to the enhanced photocatalytic performance by facilitating multiple light scatterings and providing ample surface-active sites. The resultant Ti3C2QDs/BiOBr-OVs composite photocatalyst demonstrates significant potential for environmental applications.

Abstract:In this study, we reported a one-pot hydrothermal synthesis method for the preparation of nano-heterostructured composite carbon quantum dots (CQDs)/Bi2MoO. Carbon quantum dots were in-situ synthesized and grafted onto Bi2MoO6 nanosheets via hydrothermal oxidation of glucose. For comparison studies, carbon quantum dots and Bi2MoO6 were also synthesized by the same way. The structures and compositions of the photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activity of the photocatalysts was evaluated by degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) and methylene blue (MB) under visible light irradiation. The resulting (CQDs)/Bi2MoO6 composites possess excellent photocatalytic activity and stability towards the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) and methylene blue (MB) in aqueous solution under visible light irradiation. When the mass ratio of Bi2MoO6 to glucose is 1:1, the composite showed the highest photocatalytic activity for RhB and MB degradation. A possible charge transfer and the degradation mechanism of CQDs/Bi2MoO6 materials were proposed to understand the relationship between structure and performance of the photocatalysts. The present work proposed a new method for the preparation of CQDs modified Bi2MoO6 using a facile method, which provided a new insight into the design and fabrication of advanced photocatalyst for energy and environmental application.
Coupling of BiOCl Ultrathin Nanosheets with Carbon Quantum Dots for Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance

Abstract:Over the past few decades, photocatalysis technology has received extensive attention because of its potential to mitigate or solve energy and environmental pollution problems. Designing novel materials with outstanding photocatalytic activities has become a research hotspot in this field. In this study, we prepared a series of photocatalysts in which BiOCl nanosheets were modified with carbon quantum dots（CQDs） to form CQDs/BiOCl composites by using a simple solvothermal method. The photocatalytic performance of the resulting CQDs/BiOCl composite photocatalysts was assessed by rhodamine B and tetracycline degradation under visible-light irradiation. Compared with bare BiOCl, the photocatalytic activity of the CQDs/BiOCl composites was significantly enhanced, and the 5 wt% CQDs/BiOCl composite exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity with a degradation efficiency of 94.5% after 30 min of irradiation. Moreover, photocatalytic N 2 reduction performance was significantly improved after introducing CQDs. The 5 wt% CQDs/BiOCl composite displayed the highest photocatalytic N 2 reduction performance to yield NH 3 (346.25 μmol/（g h）), which is significantly higher than those of 3 wt% CQDs/BiOCl(256.04 μmol/（g h）), 7 wt% CQDs/BiOCl(254.07 μmol/（g h）), and bare BiOCl(240.19 μmol/（g h）). Our systematic characterizations revealed that the key role of CQDs in improving photocatalytic performance is due to their increased light harvesting capacity, remarkable electron transfer ability, and higher photocatalytic activity sites.

Abstract:Novel carbon quantum dot (CQD)-modified BiOI photocatalysts were prepared via a facile hydrothermal process. The CQD-modified BiOI materials were characterized by multiple techniques. The CQD with an average size around several nanometers was distributed on the surface of BiOI microsphere. Its photocatalytic activity was investigated sufficiently by the photodegradation of methylene orange (MO). The results showed that the CQD/BiOI 1.5 wt.% sample exhibited the optimum photocatalytic activity, which was 2.5 times that of the pure BiOI. This improvement was attributed to the crucial role of CQDs, which could be acted as a photocenter for absorbing solar light, charge separation center for suppressing charge recombination.

Abstract:A series of two-dimensional (2D) interlaced BiOCl/carbon quantum dot composites (denoted as BiOCl/CQD composites) were synthesized by a template-free coprecipitation method at room temperature, and the influence of different particle size distributions of the CQDs on the physiochemical properties and photocatalytic activities of the BiOCl/CQD composites was studied. CQDs can change the morphology and increase the specific surface area of the BiOCl/CQD composites. Moreover, the particle size distribution of the CQDs (CQD loading amount) has some effect on the light absorption, separation of photogenerated charge carriers, and photocatalytic performance of the BiOCl/CQD composites. The optimized size distribution of the CQDs is 50-150 nm. BiOCl/CQD (50-150 nm) composites showed the best improvement of light absorption and the highest photocurrent density of 0.44 μA cm(-2), and exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity with almost 100% 2-nitrophenol removal under visible-light irradiation. The high efficacy of BiOCl/CQD (50-150 nm) composites could be attributed to their excellent light absorption and highly effective separation of photogenerated charge carriers.

Abstract:Z-scheme CdS/CQDs/BiOCl heterojunction was synthesized by a facile region-selective deposition process. Owing to the electronegativity of the groups on the surface of Carbon Quantum Dots (CQDs), they can be sandwiched between CdS and BiOCl, based on the stepwise region-selective deposition process. The samples were systematically characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high resolution TEM (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS), photoelectrochemical measurements and photoluminescence (PL). The results indicate that CQDs with size of 2-5 nm and CdS nanoparticles with size of 5-10 nm dispersed uniformly on the surface of cuboid BiOCl nanosheets. The photocatalytic performance tests reveal that the CdS/CQDs/BiOCl heterojunction exhibits much higher photocatalytic activity than that of BiOCl, CdS/BiOCl and CQDs/BiOCl for Rhodamine B (RhB) and phenol photodegradation under visible and UV light illumination, respectively. The enhanced photocatalytic performance should be attributed to the Z-scheme structure of CdS/CQDs/BiOCl, which not only improves visible light absorption and the migration efficiency of the photogenerated electron-holes but also keeps high redox ability of CdS/CQDs/BiOCl composite. Abstract:A novel carbon quantum dots (CQDs)/Bi12O17Cl2 semiconductor composite was synthesized by a simple room-temperature precipitation method, in which the strong interaction between CQDs and Bi12O17Cl2 formed, and it was characterized by XRD, Raman spectroscopy, TEM, XPS, UV-vis DRS, N2 adsorption/desorption and electrochemical measurements. The performance of the CQDs/Bi12O17Cl2 composite for photocatalytic oxygen evolution from water splitting was studied under visible light irradiation at room temperature. The results indicated that the rate of oxygen evolution increased firstly and then decreased with the increase of CQDs content. A maximum oxygen evolution rate of 677 & mu;mol h-1 g-1 was achieved for the CQDs/Bi12O17Cl2 composite in which 5 mL CQDs solution was dispersed. Compared with the single Bi12O17Cl2, the CQDs/Bi12O17Cl2 composites with a relatively high specific surface area and large pore volume displayed much higher charge separation efficiency under visible light. The excellent photocatalytic oxygen evolution performance of the CQDs/Bi12O17Cl2 semiconductor composites is attributed to its strong visible-light absorption capability, high charge separation efficiency, and the more positive valence band position.

Abstract:Utilization of visible light and the separation of electron–hole pairs is the forever theme of photocatalysis. In this work, a series of carbon quantum dots decorated bismuth oxychloride (CQDs/BiOCl) were prepared by solvothermal method, and served as photocatalysts for Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation under visible light. CQDs/BiOCl-8 (8 mL CQDs) can remove 97% RhB (20 mg/L) within 40 min, which is 11.3 times higher than pure BiOCl. This can be attributed to the fact that the excitation-independent up-conversion fluorescent characteristics of CQDs enable BiOCl to be excited by visible light. Furthermore, CQDs acted as electron libraries, which enhanced the separation of photoinduced electron–hole pairs in BiOCl. Quenching experiments confirmed that the superoxide (·O 2 − ) and hole (h + ) were main reactive oxygen species (ROS) for RhB degradation. This study provides a strategy to design highly efficient photocatalysts for environmental remediation.

Abstract:As a typical Bi-based photocatalyst, BiOCl has been received increasing attention because of its many advantages. However, poor visible light response ability and high recombination rate of photoexcited charge pairs significantly inhibit the intense application of BiOCl, therefore, it is considerable to develop a strategy to overcome the inherent shortcomings of BiOCl to boost its photocatalytic properties. The former works have strongly affirmed that coupling carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with BiOCl to construct heterojunctions is a practical method to boost the photoactivity of BiOCl. In this demonstration, water hyacinth powder was used to provide raw material for CQDs, and CQDs/OVs-BiOCl heterostructures were in-situ fabricated through a solvothermal synthesis. The successful modification of CQDs on BiOCl and the formation of abundant oxygen vacancies (OVs) were confirmed by several analytical methods. The test results of photoelectric property reveal that CQDs/OVs-BiOCl has faster photogenerated charge separation rate than the reference BiOCl. Photoactivity of all the samples was examined by destruction of rhodamine B (RhB) and defluorination of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). The CQDs/OVs-BiOCl heterostructures exhibit the ascendant photocatalytic destruction activity. Among them, the degradation efficiency of RhB over 1%CQDs/OVs-BiOCl under visible light irradiation is 2.6 folds of that of over the reference BiOCl. Besides, the defluorination rate of PFOA on 1%CQDs/OVs-BiOCl under UV light irradiation is 1.4 times of that of on BiOCl. The cyclic experimental results solidly prove that the CQDs/OVs-BiOCl samples have outstanding stability and good application prospect. Free radical detection experiments reveal that 1%CQDs/OVs-BiOCl reaction system produces more active species than the reference BiOCl system, and ·O2 - is the most important active substance. Additionally, the total organic carbon (TOC) test strongly demonstrate that RhB can be effectively mineralized into inorganic small substances on 1%CQDs/OVs-BiOCl under light shine. Based on the results of all the characterizations, a photocatalytic improvement mechanism for CQDs/OVs-BiOCl was reasonably elaborated. This work provides a new approach to obtain CQDs to modify BiOCl, which not only improves the photocatalytic degradation activity of BiOCl, but also achieves the purpose of use waste to treat waste.

Abstract:A novel spherical N-CQDs/BiOI photocatalyst was successfully synthesized through a facile solvothermal method. The optimization experiments of hydrothermal time and temperature were carried out. The effect of ammonium citrate addition was investigated. The as-synthesized photocatalysts were characterized via X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrum and elemental analysis. The adsorption and photocatalytic performance of as-synthesized photocatalysts were studied, 0.2N-CQDs/BiOI showed the best performance. For the removal of anionic dye RhB, adsorption occupied a major position. The maximum adsorption capacity was 97.09[Formula: see text]mg/g for RhB. For the removal of cationic dyes X3B, photocatalysis occupied a major position. The photocatalytic activity of 0.2N-CQDs/BiOI was superior to that of nano-TiO 2 under the simulate sunlight irradiation. Different scavengers were used to analyze the effect of active species and photocatalytic degradation mechanism of X3B. The outstanding stability and performance make 0.2N-CQDs/BiOI has highly potential applications in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Constructing Z-scheme heterojunction has been regarded as a fascinating method to enhance the charge carrier separation rate and retain the high photoredox ability. In this paper, a novel 0D/2D MoS 2 QDs/BiOCl Z-scheme heterojunction with outstanding visible-light photocatalytic performance has been successfully prepared by a facile one-step strategy. The MoS 2 QDs with a diameter of 5 nm were uniformly distributed on the surface of BiOCl nanosheets. The optimized MoS 2 QDs/BiOCl heterojunction showed the most robust CIP and RhB degradation efficiency, which was approximately 32.2 and 44.7 times higher than that of pure BiOCl under visible light irradiation, respectively. This result can be attributed to the synergetic effects of up-conversion and direct Z-scheme heterojunction of the MoS 2 QDs. The optical property , morphology and surface feature of the catalyst were analyzed through the UV–vis DRS, PL, XRD, Raman, FT-IR, XPS, SEM and TEM. The study of ESR characterization and free radical capture experiments confirmed the Z-scheme heterojunction electron transfer route. Finally, a rational photocatalytic mechanism for pollutants degradation over the MoS 2 QDs/BiOCl heterojunctions were proposed. This study may provide a reliable strategy for the construction of Z-scheme bismuth-based heterojunction and its potential application in photocatalytic organic pollutants degradation.

Preparation Of Bi2s3/Carbon Quantum Dot Hybrid Materials With Enhanced Photocatalytic Properties Under Ultraviolet-, Visible- And Near Infrared-Irradiation

Abstract:To solve the growing pollution issues, it is a promising alternative to develop efficient sunlight-driven photocatalysts for purifying organic wastewater. Herein, we report a new and efficient full-spectrum-responsive photocatalyst composed of Bi2S3 nanotubes incorporated with carbon quantum dots (C-dots) for rapidly degrading methylene blue (MB) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TC). Compared with naked Bi2S3 nanotubes, the as-prepared Bi2S3/C-dot nanohybrids show a remarkably higher photocatalytic efficiency for degrading MB or TC under ultraviolet (UV-), visible (vis-) and near-infrared (NIR-) light irradiation within 5 minutes. A possible mechanism is proposed for the enhanced photocatalytic activity of the Bi2S3/C-dot nanohybrids. A lower band gap as well as a wider absorbance in the UV-, vis-and NIR-regions can increase the light harvesting ability of the Bi2S3/C-dots. Meanwhile, the existence of C-dots can facilitate the charge separation of the photo-generated electron/hole pairs while electrons transfer from Bi2S3 to C-dots. Besides, an increased surface area of the Bi2S3/C-dot nanohybrids also contributes to the excellent photocatalytic activity.
In situ synthesis of a Bi2O3 quantum dot decorated BiOCl heterojunction with superior photocatalytic capability for organic dye and antibiotic removal

Abstract:As a decoration method, coupling a photocatalyst with semiconductor quantum dots has been proven to be an efficient strategy for enhanced photocatalytic performance. Herein, a novel BiOCl nanosheet decorated with Bi 2 O 3 quantum dots (QDs) was first synthesized by a facile one-step in situ chemical deposition method at room temperature. The as-prepared materials were characterized by multiple means of analysis. The Bi 2 O 3 QDs with an average diameter of about 8.0 nm were uniformly embedded on the surface of BiOCl nanosheets. The obtained Bi 2 O 3 QDs/BiOCl exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance on the degradation of the rhodamine B and ciprofloxacin, which could be attributed to the band alignment, the photosensitization effect and the strong coupling between Bi 2 O 3 and BiOCl. In addition, the dye photosensitization effect was demonstrated by the monochromatic photodegradation experiments. The radical trapping experiments and the ESR testing demonstrated the type II charge transfer route of the heterojunction. Finally, a reasonable photocatalytic mechanism based on the relative band positions was discussed to illustrate the photoreaction process. These findings provide a good choice for the design and potential application of BiOCl-based photocatalysts in water remediation.

Abstract:A new carbon quantum dots/porous InVO4 (CQDs/p‐InVO4) microsphere composite was synthesized by a facile reflux method. The relationship of structure and property of CQDs/p‐InVO4 was studied in detail. The results show that the as‐prepared composite samples maintain the porous structure of the p‐InVO4 microspheres, while CQDs are uniformly loaded on the surface of the p‐InVO4 microspheres with an intimate interface. With this unique structure, the as‐obtained samples exhibit enhanced photocatalytic degradation ability towards Rhodamine B (RhB) under visible‐light irradiation. The synergistic effect of more active sites, increased visible‐light absorption, and high separation efficiency of photogenerated electron–hole pairs is believed to be the reason for the enhanced photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Cocatalysts play important roles in enhanced efficiency of heterojunctions that their selection and synthesis are essential. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs), as one of important cocatalysts, often suffer from complicated synthesis, low functionality, and low photocatalytic efficiency issues that need to be solved effectively. In this study, we constructed a new molybdenum disulfide/N,S-doped carbon quantum dots (MoS2/N,S-CQDs) heterojunction with enhanced light absorption and electrons transfer di-functional properties via a facile one-pot hydrothermal method. The MoS2/N,S-CQDs simultaneously degraded 99.8% of methylene blue (MB) and 95.1% of malachite green (MG) in an actual water system (Tianjin Lake) under simulated sunlight irradiation for 120 min. The heterojunction showed obvious efficiencies under both infrared light (degraded 83.8% of MG after 120 min) and visible light (90.1% MG after 120 min) irradiation. According to energy level and density functional theory (DFT) analyses, the electrons in MoS2/N,S-CQDs were demonstrated that transferred from N,S-CQDs to MoS2 interfaces, and the light-absorption range of the composites was effectively extended to near-infrared ranges owing to excellent up-conversion fluorescence property of the N,S-CQDs. We believe that the facile synthetic technique and effective multifunctional properties of composite have the potential for further research on CQDs-based heterojunctions and their industrial applications.

Abstract:The 3D flower sphere Bi2S3/Bi4O5Br2 heterojunction was successfully synthesized by handy solvothermal methods. With the addition of nanorod Bi2S3, the morphology of flower sphere Bi4O5Br2 gradually did not appear spherical with a heterojunction interface formed, which accelerated electrons transfer and inhibited the occurrence of photocorrosion. It proved that the Bi2S3/Bi4O5Br2 heterojunction was constructed by XRD, SEM, TEM and XPS. Meanwhile, the light absorption range, intensity, specific surface area and photocurrent of the synthesized materials were prominently improved. The ciprofloxacin (CIP) and tetracycline (TC) were most efficiently degraded by the 0.10BSB. The contribution values of superoxide free radicals (·O2 −) and holes (h+) in the trapping agent experiments were calculated. A rational Z-scheme photocatalytic mechanism for Bi2S3/Bi4O5Br2 heterojunction was proposed in the degradation process.
