Abstract:The desire for an attractive smile is a major reason people seek orthodontic and other forms of cosmetic dental treatment. An understanding of the features of a smile is important for dental diagnosis and treatment planning. The common methods of smile analysis rely on the visual analysis of smile aesthetics using posed photographs, and videos and gathering information about smiles through patient questionnaires and diaries. Recent emerging trends utilise artificial intelligence and automated systems capable of detecting and analysing smiles using motion capture, computer vision, computer graphics, infrared and thermal imaging, electromyography, and optical sensors. This review aims to provide an up-to-date summary of emerging trends in smile analysis in dentistry and orthodontics. Understanding the advantages and limitations of emerging tools for smile analysis will enable clinicians to provide tailored and up-to-date treatment plans.

Abstract:To better understand the expression of human smile, there have been considerable studies about automatic smile detection. Despite all the research, few attention is paid to analyze a smile in a comprehensive way. In this paper, a smile analysis system is presented to detailedly measure a person's smile, which consists of three main modules: smile detection, smile intensity estimation and spontaneous versus posed (SVP) smile recognition. Firstly, our recent proposed feature, Self-Similarity of Gradients (GSS), is employed to detect smiling facial images in unconstrained scenarios. Secondly, the smile intensity is estimated in terms of different facial regions rather than merely the mouth region, which is also applied in the temporal phase segmentation of a smile. Finally, in SVP smile recognition module, a discriminative learning model (DLM) is proposed based on a local spatial-temporal feature, which devotes to obtaining most robust and discriminative patterns of interest. The first two modules are the bases of the last, preparing a deeper understanding of a smile. Experiments on benchmark databases are carried out and compared with the state-of-the-art methods respectively, which validate the advantages of our approach of SVP smile recognition. Moreover, a comprehensive analysis of human smile is given for the first time to the best of our knowledge, which could pave the way for computers that better assess the emotional states of their users and provide useful and important information in helping the research of psychology and behavior science.
Preliminary Study on Analysis Method of Spontaneous Smile and Application

Abstract:Objective To investigate the smile esthetic elements of Chinese Han-nationality female based on high definition (HD) digital camera with computer-image measuring technique.Methods HD digital camera was used to capture spontaneous smile process combined with computer-image measuring technique to establish the analysis method of smile.Ninety-nine Han-nationality female with normal gingiva,aged from 20 to 30 years were recruited.The lip-incisor edge distance,gingival display were measured.The data was statistically analyzed.Results A standard and objective method to analyze spontaneous smile was established.Forty-three percent(43/99) of the subjects studied were classified as having a high smile and average smile respectively,13％ (13/99) as having a low smile. Gingival display accounted for (1.34 ±0.98) mm in high smile type.Conclusions Average smile and high smile type were most common in the Chinese Han-nationality female studied.
Evidence for Distinct Facial Signals of Reward, Affiliation, and Dominance from Both Perception and Production Tasks

Abstract:Smiles are nonverbal signals that convey social information and influence the social behavior of recipients, but the precise form and social function of a smile can be variable. In previous work, we have proposed that there are at least three physically distinct types of smiles associated with specific social functions: reward smiles signal positive affect and reinforce desired behavior; affiliation smiles signal non-threat and promote peaceful social interactions; dominance smiles signal feelings of superiority and are used to negotiate status hierarchies. The present work advances the science of the smile by addressing a number of questions that directly arise from this smile typology. What do perceivers think when they see each type of smile (Study 1)? How do perceivers behave in response to each type of smile (Study 2)? Do people produce three physically distinct smiles in response to contexts related to each of the three social functions of smiles (Study 3)? We then use an online machine learning platform to uncover the labels that lay people use to conceptualize the smile of affiliation, which is a smile that serves its social function but lacks a corresponding lay concept. Taken together, the present findings support the conclusion that reward, affiliation, and dominance smiles are distinct signals with specific social functions. These findings challenge the traditional assumption that smiles merely convey whether and to what extent a smiler is happy and demonstrate the utility of a social-functional approach to the study of facial expression.
Bridging geometric morphometrics to medical anatomy: An example from an experimental study of the human smile

Abstract:The method of Cartesian transformations introduced by D’Arcy Thompson a century ago in his celebrated book precipitated an important development in 20th-century biometrics: a fusion of the geometrical and biological approaches to morphology. Some decades later this fusion, in turn, spun off another multidisciplinary focus, that bridges between biostatistics and biomedical imaging. Our article is intended to seed a complementary focus: a bridge between biostatistics and medical anatomy, a field that has to this day remained mainly verbal rather than quantitative. Specifically, we are proposing a novel methodology for arriving at anatomical interpretations of statistical findings about large-scale contrasts of organismal morphology or its dynamics by combining two toolkits hitherto separate in their notation and their disciplinary housing: morphometrics and psychometrics. A contemporary morphometric analysis deals with patterns of shape coordinate covariation in terms of their geometric adjacency; psychometric factor analysis, the same patterns of covariation in terms of simplicity of interpretation. By combining these tools we account for the dynamics of a facial expression in terms of the actions of the underlying muscles, thereby realizing Thompson’s original metaphor, the “origins of form in force,” for systems that “vary in a more or less uniform manner.” This paper reviews the history of Thompson’s metaphor and then the current literature quantifying smiles, in order to set the stage for the combination of scaling analysis and factor analysis that we are putting forward. We demonstrate the new approach by reanalyzing a data set of ten landmarks around the vermilion borders of the human lip contrasting the dynamics of two socially stereotyped physiological cycles, the open-lip smile and the closed-lip smile, over a sample of 14 normal faces. Our analysis centers on just two dimensions of statistical shape space, those of largest geometrical scale, which can be identified with the action of two different muscles, orbicularis oris and zygomaticus major. The two smiles differ radically in their achieved deformations. Furthermore, while the closed-lip smiles arrived at their final forms along similar shape trajectories, the open-lip smiles did not. Our closing discussion explores some aspects of morphodynamics that are illuminated by the example here.

Assessment of Aesthetic Smile Components in Patients With Skeletal Class II Vertical and Horizontal Growth Patterns Compared to Class I Cases

Abstract:Introduction In orthodontics, having a beautiful smile is very important. It is frequently the main driving force behind people's efforts to enhance their oral health and professional opportunities. Orthodontic and dental treatment planning might benefit greatly when evaluating the aesthetic components of a patient's smile in individuals with varying skeletal growth patterns. In order to help orthodontists achieve the best possible functional and aesthetic results for their patients, the eight elements of a balanced smile are essential to orthodontic therapy. This study aims to evaluate, in comparison to Skeletal Class I Average instances, eight balanced smile components in patients with Skeletal Class II Vertical and Horizontal growth patterns. Methodology A total of 45 patients aged 14-30 were selected from the Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics Out-Patient Department (OPD). They were divided into three groups: Skeletal Class I Average, Skeletal Class II Vertical, and Skeletal Class II Horizontal cases based on their malocclusion type. Patients were made to smile in response to a joke or social conversation and their photos were analyzed using Photopea software (Photopea Inc., Prague, Czech Republic) to determine the eight components of a balanced smile. Result Three skeletal classes' worth of smile components were examined in this study. Lip line measurements varied greatly; the highest mean measurement was found in the Skeletal Class II Vertical group (p-value < 0.01). There were no noteworthy correlations found between smile arc and upper lip curvature. Measurements of lateral negative space did not show any significant group differences. On the other hand, a significant correlation was seen in smile symmetry, where asymmetrical smiles were more prevalent in Skeletal Classes I and II Vertical groups (p-value is 0.00072). While arch symmetry suggested a potential relationship between the groups, dental midline alignment revealed possible associations. Conclusion Assessing the aesthetic components of smiles in patients with varying skeletal growth patterns, i.e., contrasting Class II Vertical and Horizontal growth patterns with Class I Average cases, provides valuable information about the connection between smile aesthetics and facial skeletal structure. The results suggest that when compared to Class I typical instances, Skeletal Class II Vertical and Horizontal growth patterns may show clear variations in certain aspects of an attractive smile. Comprehending these variations is essential for devising treatment strategies for patients, and additional investigation is needed. In order to obtain optimal aesthetic outcomes, treatment strategies should strive to optimize smile aesthetics while addressing personalized treatment plans that take into account the patient's unique facial features, smiling preferences, and functional requirements.

Abstract:A formal theory is proposed that accounts for the motivational architecture underlying the spontaneous smiling response in its most salient varieties (i.e., smiling due to security, relief, embarrassment, fear, amazement, submission, and triumph). The theory is based on a single assumption according to which the smiling response, in all instances named, is due to a reduction of "autonomy claim" as defined within the framework of the Zurich Model of Social Motivation. The theory's consistency is evinced by way of computer simulation, its phenomenological plausibility can be demonstrated by animation based on Ekman's Facial Action Coding System.
Smile analysis and face-bow transfer: enhancing aesthetic restorative treatment

Abstract:The objective of current aesthetic dental treatments are to enhance the patient's smile by improving the overall dental appearance. A detailed analysis of the patient's face as it relates to the three-dimensional position, shape, and color of the teeth is required to improve this appearance. A full frontal and lateral evaluation of the patient's facial form is required to successfully complete on aesthetic smile evaluation. Additional considerations include cephalometry and a thorough dental analysis. This article demonstrates a comprehensive smile analysis technique and its communication to the dental technician.

Abstract:PURPOSE:This study aimed to identify the characteristics of full-smile images assessed by laypersons using visual analog scale measurement. MATERIALS AND METHODS:A total of 176 young Chinese subjects (88 males and 88 females; 20-35 years of age) with healthy dentogingival tissue were recruited to have their dynamic smiles captured using digital technology. A full-smile frame image of each subject was selected and evaluated by 22 laypersons (11 males and 11 females; 20-35 years of age) using visual analog scale measurement. Unattractive and attractive groups were designated according to the 25th percentile and 75th percentile of average visual analog scale score for the subjects, respectively. Eight smile variables were used to measure the characteristics of the full-smile images. Pearson's Chi-square test and unpaired t tests were used to analyze the data with significance level α = 0.05. RESULTS:The visual analog scale measurement scores of unattractive and attractive subgroups, respectively, were 37.89 ± 2.12 and 50.67 ± 2.75 (male subjects), and 37.14 ± 2.80 and 51.92 ± 1.99 (female subjects). VAS scores were significantly different between subgroups for both male and female subjects (P < .001). No significant differences were observed between male and female subjects (P > .05). CONCLUSIONS:Attractive full-smiles in young Chinese subjects demonstrated higher frequencies of average or low anterior smile line, average or low posterior smile line, upward upper lip curvature, and "broad and short" smile with high smile index. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE:The smile variables of anterior smile line, posterior smile line, upper lip curvature, and smile index are predominant factors of smile attractiveness, which should be given priority to consider and manage in the anterior esthetic treatment plan.

Abstract:Smile dynamics of Fijians and New Zealanders showed objective differences in their Action Units intensity, the most distinctive one being a higher activation of the Duchenne's marker (AU6) in the Fijian group, which is regarded as a sign of smile genuineness. Background The Fijian 'Bula Smile' is often described as the world's friendliest; however, its description remains anecdotal. Objective This study aimed to describe and compare the dynamics of Fijians' smiles with those of New Zealand Europeans. Methods An observational study was conducted on two ethnic groups, Fijians (FJ; N = 23) and New Zealand Europeans (NZ; N = 23), age‐ and gender‐matched. All participants were asked to watch amusing videos, and their reactions were video recorded. The videos were analysed by software to assess the frequency, duration, intensity and genuineness of smiling episodes. Based on the Facial Action Coding System, Action Unit 6 (AU6—cheek raiser), Action Unit 12 (AU12—lip corner puller) and Action Unit 25 (AU25—lips apart) were assessed. Abstract:BackgroundThe subject’s inherent growth pattern can be an effective factor in characteristics of smile. More vertical growth in the posterior maxilla than in the anterior maxilla could result in a changed relationship between the occlusal plane and the curvature of the lower lip upon smile. In order to broaden the understanding of how smile gets affected by growth pattern and the underlying hard tissues, the present study was undertaken to compare smile in various growth patterns, to determine sexual dimorphism, if any; as well as to correlate smile with underlying hard tissues.MethodsOne hundred and fifty subjects were selected amongst the students in the Dental Institute and from the outpatient department of Department Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. Sample selected for the study ranged in the age group of 17 to 25 years. Selected individuals were subjected to lateral head cephalometric radiography in the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology and videography. Cephalograms were traced and the subjects were divided into horizontal, average, and vertical growth pattern on the basis of GoGn-SN, lower anterior facial height, and Jaraback’s ratio. The video clip was downloaded to obtain frame of posed smile. Cephalometric and photographic measurements were recorded and subjected to statistical analysis.ResultsThe mean values of smile parameters were significantly higher in males as compared to females irrespective of the growth pattern. The mean incisal display, interlabial gap, lower lip to incisal edge distance, upper vertical lip length, and occlusal plane angle was highest in both males and females of vertical facial growth pattern group; whereas, the smile index, posterior corridor (left and right) were less in vertical facial growth pattern group in both males and females. Thus, the parameters in vertical dimension were increased in vertical growers whereas, the parameters in transverse dimension decreased.ConclusionsThe facial growth pattern has significant influence on the parameters of smile along with definite sexual dimorphism. The angular and linear parameters, except saddle angle and lower incisor to NB (linear and angular), influenced smile.

Abstract:Smile is an irrefutable expression that shows the physical state of the mind in both true and deceptive ways. Generally, it shows happy state of the mind, however, `smiles' can be deceptive, for example people can give a smile when they feel happy and sometimes they might also give a smile (in a different way) when they feel pity for others. This work aims to distinguish spontaneous (felt) smile expressions from posed (deliberate) smiles by extracting and analyzing both global (macro) motion of the face and subtle (micro) changes in the facial expression features through both tracking a series of facial fiducial markers as well as using dense optical flow. Specifically the eyes and lips features are captured and used for analysis. It aims to automatically classify all smiles into either `spontaneous' or `posed' categories, by using support vector machines (SVM). Experimental results on large database show promising results as compared to other relevant methods.
Smile intensity in social networking profile photographs is related to greater scientific achievements

Abstract:Theory and research indicates that individuals with more frequent positive emotions are better at attaining goals at work and in everyday life. In the current study we examined whether the expression of genuine positive emotions by scientists was positively correlated with work-related accomplishments, defined by bibliometric (e.g. number of citations) and sociometric (number of followers for scholarly updates) indices. Using a sample of 440 scientists from a social networking site for researchers, multiple raters coded smile intensity (full smile, partial smile, or no smile) in publicly available photographs. We found that scientists who presented a full smile had the same quantity of publications yet of higher quality (e.g. citations per paper) and attracted more followers to their updates compared to less positive emotionally expressive peers; results remained after controlling for age and sex. Thin-slicing approaches to the beneficial effects of positive emotionality offer an ecologically valid approach to complement experimental and longitudinal evidence. Evidence linking positive emotional expressions to scientific impact and social influence provides further support for broaden and build models of positive emotions.

Smile variation leaks personality and increases the accuracy of interpersonal judgments

Abstract:People ubiquitously smile during brief interactions and first encounters, and when posing for photos used for virtual dating, social networking, and professional profiles. Yet not all smiles are the same: subtle individual differences emerge in how people display this nonverbal facial expression. We hypothesized that idiosyncrasies in people's smiles can reveal aspects of their personality and guide the personality judgments made by observers, thus enabling a smiling face to serve as a valuable tool in making more precise inferences about an individual's personality. Study 1 (N = 303) supported the hypothesis that smile variation reveals personality, and identified the facial-muscle activations responsible for this leakage. Study 2 (N = 987) found that observers use the subtle distinctions in smiles to guide their personality judgments, consequently forming slightly more accurate judgments of smiling faces than neutral ones. Smiles thus encode traces of personality traits, which perceivers utilize as valid cues of those traits.
Analysis of the Factors Influencing the Subjective Smile Evaluation in Females after Orthodontic Treatment

Abstract:Objective To understand the factors influencing subjective smile evaluation and investigate the consistence between orthodontists and laypersons on smile evaluation.Methods 80 female patients with skeletal Class Ⅰ facial pattern (aged 14 to 27 years old) were included in the study after finishing orthodontic treatment.All subjects presented with Class Ⅰ canine and molar relationship,normal overbite and overjet and well-aligned teeth.The subjects were divided into extraction (42 subjects) and non-extraction groups(38 subjects).Posttreatment smile photographs of lower 1/3 of the face were taken.The smile photos were randomly numbered and distributed with a fixed sequence to 10 orthodontists and 10 laypersons for subjective smile evaluation (VAS).Results Significant difference was noted in smile scores when smile photographs were evaluated by orthodontists and laypersons.(P＜0.001).No significant difference was found in smile scores when smile photos in extraction group were compared with that in non-extraction group.Correlation analysis indicated that smile index was positively correlated with orthodontists and layperson's score,smile height,gingival exposure,canine width ratio,visible dentition width ratio was negatively correlated with their score.Conclusions Extraction or non-extraction decision itself might not significantly affect subjective smile evaluation of a patient.Gingival exposure may play a more important role in subjective evaluation of smile.
Benefits of the Duchenne Smile and Positive Emotions. A Systematic Review

Abstract:The Duchenne smile is the genuine smile characterized by the activation of the muscles around the eyes and mouth. It has been associated, in the specialized literature, with the experience of positive emotions. Through the present work, using a qualitative approach, we aimed to identify and systematize the studies carried out in the period 2010-2023 that investigated the relationship between the Duchenne smile and positive emotions. Following the application of specific keywords, 611 studies were identified, from which, after applying the inclusion-exclusion criteria, 8 studies were included in the review. A conclusion could not be drawn regarding the idea that the Duchenne smile is indisputably an indicator of positive emotions, but the data provide us with important information such as the following: the Duchenne smile is associated with experiencing positive emotions (happiness, joy, hope, contentment) and manifests itself in the context of affiliation and cooperation. It has an important role in triggering extended cognitive states (attentional ones) and can be performed voluntarily (in the presence/absence of a positive emotion), having the same health benefits as spontaneous smiling. In addition, the Duchenne smile increases the acceptance rate of feedback given by teachers in class. The relationship between the Duchenne smile and positive emotions is context dependent.

The average displacement, velocity, and acceleration during facial movements were measured. The mean change in 3D surface morphometry and activation of the zygomaticus major were determined. Results The volunteers, comprising 10 males and 10 females, had a mean age of 24 ± 10 years; for female, mean age was 23 ± 5 years and for men 26 ± 13 years. In this work, we propose a cluster of approaches to classify posed and spontaneous smiles using deep convolutional neural network (CNN) face features, local phase quantization (LPQ), dense optical flow and histogram of gradient (HOG). Eulerian Video Magnification (EVM) is used for micro-expression smile amplification along with three normalization procedures for distinguishing posed and spontaneous smiles. Although the deep CNN face model is trained with large number of face images, HOG features outperforms this model for overall face smile classification task. Using EVM to amplify micro-expressions did not have a significant impact on classification accuracy, while the normalizing facial features improved classification accuracy. Unlike many manual or semi-automatic methodologies, our approach aims to automatically classify all smiles into either `spontaneous' or `posed' categories, by using support vector machines (SVM). Experimental results on large UvA-NEMO smile database show promising results as compared to other relevant methods.
Measurement and Analysis of Smile Line of 62 Han-Chinese

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To analyze smile features in maximum lip-dynamic in Chinese.METHODS:Sixty-two Han-Chinese, travelling in Germany, with a mean age of 28.5 years were enrolled and photographed. Standardized digital photos were made to measure the height of displayed maxillary gingiva, papilla and tooth during an enjoyment smile. Statistical analysis was performed using Mann-Whitney-U Test and non-parametric analysis.RESULTS:The mean height of tooth display for the central incisors was 10 mm, with no significant difference between the gender (P > 0.05). The mean height of gingival display was 1.3 mm and the mean papilla height was 3.4 mm. There was no significant difference between the genders (P > 0.05). 31% (19/62) of the subjects belonged to high smile line type, 50% (31/62) to medium smile line type and 19% (12/62) to low smile line type.CONCLUSIONS:The red esthetics is a paramount factor for Chinese men and women in the esthetic restoration. 81% of the Chinese studied showed various degree of gingival exposure from central incisor to the premolars, which defined the esthetic area for Chinese people. Papilla is a critical parameter for esthetic evaluation and treatment design. The ratio of high smile line in Chinese may be higher than that in Caucasian.
