Abstract:AbstractThe Indian summer monsoon (ISM) monsoon is critical to billions of people living in the region. Yet, significant debates remain on primary ISM drivers on millennial-orbital timescales. Here, we use speleothem oxygen isotope (δ18O) data from Bittoo cave, Northern India to reconstruct ISM variability over the past 280,000 years. We find strong coherence between North Indian and Chinese speleothem δ18O records from the East Asian monsoon domain, suggesting that both Asian monsoon subsystems exhibit a coupled response to changes in Northern Hemisphere summer insolation (NHSI) without significant temporal lags, supporting the view that the tropical-subtropical monsoon variability is driven directly by precession-induced changes in NHSI. Comparisons of the North Indian record with both Antarctic ice core and sea-surface temperature records from the southern Indian Ocean over the last glacial period do not suggest a dominant role of Southern Hemisphere climate processes in regulating the ISM variability on millennial-orbital timescales.

Protracted Indian monsoon droughts of the past millennium and their societal impacts

Abstract:Protracted droughts lasting years to decades constitute severe threats to human welfare across the Indian subcontinent. Such events are, however, rare during the instrumental period (ca. since 1871 CE). In contrast, the historic documentary evidence indicates the repeated occurrences of protracted droughts in the region during the preinstrumental period implying that either the instrumental observations underestimate the full spectrum of monsoon variability or the historic accounts overestimate the severity and duration of the past droughts. Here we present a temporally precise speleothem-based oxygen isotope reconstruction of the Indian summer monsoon precipitation variability from Mawmluh cave located in northeast India. Our data reveal that protracted droughts, embedded within multidecadal intervals of reduced monsoon rainfall, frequently occurred over the past millennium. These extreme events are in striking temporal synchrony with the historically documented droughts, famines, mass mortality events, and geopolitical changes in the Indian subcontinent. Our findings necessitate reconsideration of the region's current water resources, sustainability, and mitigation policies that discount the possibility of protracted droughts in the future.

Abstract:On the basis of correlating some significant proxies,such as TOC,δ13C,grain-size and pollen data,from the Napahai lake,Shangri-la and the Beihai wetland,Tengchong,and referring the sedimentary rhythm and δ18O record since 60 ka BP from the Bay of Bengal,we found that all of them have been closely affected by the Indian monsoon system.Because of the difference in their latitudinal,longitudinal and sea-land situations,however,the climatic records clearly show a differential affinity to the summer monsoon or to the winter one.The most impressive climatic shock over the past 60 ka was a great thermal and wet event that happened roughly from 37 ka BP to 32 ka BP and was evidently manifested within both the Beihai's and the Napahai's sedimentary sequences.Discordantly,that event cannot be recognized in the marine records.We deduced from the correlation between the continental deposit and marine deposit that the control of the regional climatic event originated from the land side rather than the sea side during the late MIS3.It is likely that an extreme warming up at that phase at the Tibetan Plateau,which resulted in the decline of the Indian winter monsoon and other changes of the atmospheric circulation,was responsible for the event.The geomorphologic configuration played an important role in the monsoonal precipitation as well.
Decoupling Warming and Monsoon Precipitation Over the Last 3110 Years in Northwestern Yunnan Province, Southwestern China

Abstract:Understanding the variability and related dynamic mechanisms of the Indian summer monsoon evolution over the past millenniums is crucial for disaster prevention and mitigation in the context of strengthening global warming. Here, we present a high‐resolution hydroclimate reconstruction over the past 3110 years in northwestern Yunnan Province, southwestern China, based on grain size analysis using the End‐member modeling algorithm and other environmental proxies. The results indicate that the temperature in northwestern Yunnan Province generally decreased since 3110 cal. yr BP, aligning with other temperature records on regional and global scales. Precipitation in the study area remained relatively stable before 1000 cal. yr BP, but exhibited an obvious out‐phase change compared with the temperature records over multidecadal to centennial timescale. While after 1000 cal. yr BP, the precipitation steadily increased, revealing the hydroclimate pattern of notably dry Medieval Warm Period (MWP) and relatively wet Little Ice Age (LIA) in the study area. The decoupling combination of temperature and precipitation spanning the MWP and LIA in southwestern China contrasts with that in the East Asian summer monsoon area and the Indian subcontinent which is also controlled by the Indian summer monsoon, indicating the spatial heterogeneity of precipitation in the Asian summer monsoon region. The discussion about dynamic mechanisms points out that solar activity emerges as a significant factor influencing regional temperature changes, and El Niño‐Southern Oscillation and Intertropical Convergence Zone migration jointly impact the precipitation change in the study area and the hydroclimate discrepancy in the Asian summer monsoon region.

Abstract:Climate changes on Southeastern Tibetan Plateau have important impacts on social and economic development, as well as the ecosystem of southwestern China and Indo-China Peninsula. Here, we collected two stalagmites from Shenqi (Miraculous) cave in southern Sichuan, China. The stalagmite δ18O record shows good coherence with local instrumental rainfall record, as well as tree ring- and pollen-based moisture reconstructions from southeastern Tibetan Plateau during overlapped time periods. As a result, we reconstructed high-resolution (∼4.9 yrs) monsoon precipitation variations on southeastern Tibetan Plateau over the past 2300 years by using the combined stalagmite δ18O record. The result reveals an overall decreasing precipitation trend, with two most notable wet periods occurred in 60–280 AD and 370–510 AD. The most remarkably dry period is the recent 200 years. Some decadal scale wet and dry intervals were also identified. The abnormal drought during 1160–1245 AD might have accelerated Dali kingdom's demise at 1253 AD. Power spectrum analysis indicated significant 373-, 187-, 22-, 12- and 11- yr cycles in our stalagmite record, suggesting the impact of solar activity. Increased monsoon precipitation on southeastern TP was observed in solar activity minima during the last millennium. We further synthesized an integrated precipitation record for southwestern China and discussed spatial patterns of precipitation over China during the last two millennia. The comparisons confirm a "dry southern and wet northern" pattern in monsoonal China during the Medieval Warm Period and a "wet southern and dry northern" pattern during the Little Ice Age and Dark Age Cold Period. Solar activity, the strength of westerly jet and summer monsoon, as well as the SST of tropical Indo-Pacific might play important roles on the rainfall spatial patterns over monsoonal China during the last 2000 years.

Abstract:Holocene climatic and environmental changes on the northeastern Tibetan Plateau (TP) have been widely discussed based on the climatic records from sedimentary cores. However, differences in the reconstructed climatic history from various studies in this region still exist, probably due to influence of climatic proxies from multiple factors and the chronological uncertainties in lacustrine sediments. Here we present records of terrestrial plant δ13C, soil color and total organic carbon content over the past 8400years from a well-dated meadow section on the northeastern TP. The terrestrial plant δ13C value serves as a good summer precipitation/moisture indicator in the studied region. Soil color property and TOC content are also able to disentangle the moisture evolution history. All the data show much wet climates at 8400–7400calyr BP, dry climates at 7400–6000calyr BP and then wet conditions with fluctuation at 6000–3200calyr BP. Late Holocene moisture appears to be comparable with moist conditions from 6000 to 3200calyr BP. By further comparing the climatic variations in the Lake Qinghai area with records of the reconstructed summer temperature and the Asian Monsoon precipitation, we believe that the pattern of moisture/precipitation evolution in the Lake Qinghai area was not completely consistent with regions around Lake Qinghai, probably due to complicated interaction between the East Asian Summer Monsoon and the Indian Summer Monsoon.
Impact of Climate Change on Past Indian Monsoon and Circulation: A Perspective Based on Radiogenic and Trace Metal Geochemistry

Abstract:The Indian summer monsoon (ISM), one of the dramatic illustrations of seasonal hydrological variability in the climate system, affects billions of lives. The ISM dominantly controls the northern Indian Ocean sea-surface salinity, mostly in the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea, by the Ganga-Brahmaputra-Meghna and Irrawaddy-Salween rivers outflow and direct rainfall. In the past decade, numerous studies have used radiogenic neodymium (εNd) isotopes of seawater to link Indian subcontinent erosion and the ensuing increase in discharge that results in changes in the north Indian Ocean sea surface. Here we synthesized the state of the ISM and ocean circulation using the neodymium and hafnium isotopes from north Indian Ocean deep-sea sediments. Our data suggest that the Bay of Bengal and north Indian Ocean sea-surface conditions were most likely modulated by changes in the ISM strength during the last glacial-interglacial cycle. These findings contrast to the hypothesis that suggests that the bottom water neodymium isotopes of the northern Indian Ocean were modulated by switching between two distant sources, namely North Atlantic Deep Water and Antarctic bottom water. Furthermore, the consistency between the neodymium and hafnium isotopes during the last glacial maximum and Holocene suggests a weak and dry ISM and strong and wet conditions, respectively. These data also indicate that the primary source of these isotopes was the Himalayas. Our results support the previously published paleo-proxy records, indicating weak and strong monsoons for the same periods. Moreover, our data further support the hypothesis that the northern Indian Ocean neodymium isotopes were decoupled from the global ocean neodymium budget due to the greater regional influence by the great Ganga-Brahmaputra-Meghna and Irrawaddy-Salween discharge draining the Indian subcontinent to the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea.

Abstract:Identifying variability and the mechanisms driving variability in the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) since the last deglaciation is critical for understanding past hydroclimatic change. In this study, we present an accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon dated record of delta O-18 variations in authigenic carbonates derived from Lake Chenghai in southwest China, a region that receives moisture mainly from the Indian Ocean. The delta O-18 values vary from -11.9 to +0.1 parts per thousand, providing a detailed record of variations in ISM precipitation delta O-18 values, and lake hydrological balance. The record shows that the ISM generally strengthened in the post-glacial between 15.6 and 8.8 cal ka BP, but that three centennial to millennial-scale drought events were superimposed on the long-term trend. Drought events, as indicated by substantial positive shifts in 8 18 0 value, occurred from 15.6 +/- 0.2 to 14.4 +/- 0.2, 12.5 +/- 0.2 to 11.7 +/- 0.2 and 10.1 +/- 0.1 to 10.0 +/- 0.1 cal ka BP, corresponding to the Heinrich 1, Younger Dryas, and Bond 7 cold events in the North Atlantic region, respectively. The timings of these droughts are suggested to be related to meltwater discharge into the North Atlantic. The weakened Atlantic Meridional Overturning circulation, which leads in turn to the southward migration of the intertropical convergence zone and cooling in the tropical Indian Ocean. Indian Summer Monsoon History During the Last Glacial Cycle Revealed by a Loess Sequence from the Tibetan Plateau

Abstract:The Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) has a profound influence on the environment and people of East Asia. However, despite its importance, the variability and dynamic mechanisms of the ISM remain inadequately understood. This study investigates the evolution of the Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) since the Last Interglacial by analyzing the well-preserved Cuoweng (CW) loess–paleosol sequence in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau. A robust chronological framework is established using quartz optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating and K-feldspar post-infrared infrared stimulated luminescence (pIRIR) dating. The history of the ISM over the past ~135 ka is reconstructed based on multiple environmental proxies. The results indicate that the ISM experienced significant glacial–interglacial fluctuations during the last glacial cycle, exhibiting a strengthened monsoon during warm periods and a weakened one during cold periods. Additionally, suborbital-scale cyclic variations in the ISM during the marine isotope stage (MIS) 5 are revealed, with enhanced monsoon conditions during MIS 5a, 5c, and 5e and weakened conditions during MIS 5b and 5d. These findings suggest that the ISM variations are primarily influenced by a combination of high- and low-latitude forcing. This study provides new insights into the complex responses of the ISM to climate change, enhancing our understanding of its potential future changes.
Coherent response of the Indian Monsoon Rainfall to Atlantic Multi-decadal Variability over the last 2000 years

Abstract:Abstract Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) rainfall has a direct effect on the livelihoods of two billion people in the Indian-subcontinent. Yet, our understanding of the drivers of multi-decadal variability of the ISM is far from being complete. In this context, large-scale forcing of ISM rainfall variability with multi-decadal resolution over the last two millennia is investigated using new records of sea surface salinity (δ 18 Ow) and sea surface temperatures (SSTs) from the Bay of Bengal (BoB). Higher δ 18 Ow values during the Dark Age Cold Period (1550 to 1250 years BP) and the Little Ice Age (700 to 200 years BP) are suggestive of reduced ISM rainfall, whereas lower δ 18 Ow values during the Medieval Warm Period (1200 to 800 years BP) and the major portion of the Roman Warm Period (1950 to 1550 years BP) indicate a wetter ISM. This variability in ISM rainfall appears to be modulated by the Atlantic Multi-decadal Oscillation (AMO) via changes in large-scale thermal contrast between the Asian land mass and the Indian Ocean, a relationship that is also identifiable in the observational data of the last century. Therefore, we suggest that inter-hemispheric scale interactions between such extra tropical forcing mechanisms and global warming are likely to be influential in determining future trends in ISM rainfall.

Abstract:Continental weathering plays a key role in regulating the long-term climate stability via negative feedback. However, whether and how erosion and weathering respond to rapid climate change (e.g millennial scale) in large river basins remains unclear, partly due to the lack of archives with robust age models and high sampling resolution. As one of the largest sediment source-to-sink systems, the Himalaya-Ganga/Brahmaputra River-Bay of Bengal system is considered as an ideal laboratory for examining the weathering-climate relationships over the past. Here we present the elemental and mineralogical data from well age-constrained core sediments in the Bay of Bengal, which document the erosion and weathering conditions in South Asia during the last glacial period. All proxies generally show larger values during glacial interstadials than the stadials, consistent with the millennial variabilities of regional sea surface temperature (SST) and the Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) strength. We confirm that the erosion and chemical weathering signals in Ganga/Brahmaputra River basins, which sensitively respond to the ISM strength and/or temperature change, could be propagated through the large river systems and faithfully preserved in the South Asian marginal seas, without noticeable time lag on a millennial scale. Our findings provide valuable data for response of erosion and weathering dynamics in a large river basin to rapid climate changes, and highlight the immense potential of monsoon-driven continental silicate weathering in floodplains as a substantial short-term carbon sink, thus underscoring a pivotal natural carbon sequestration mechanism amidst the escalating threat of global warming.

Abstract:We reconstructed the variability of the Earth's strongest hydrological system, the Indian Monsoon, over the interval 6.24 to 4.91 Ma at International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 353 Site U1448 in the Andaman Sea. We integrated high‐resolution benthic and planktic foraminiferal carbon and oxygen isotopes with Mg/Ca measurements of the mixed layer foraminifer Trilobatus sacculifer to reconstruct the isotopic composition of seawater (δ 18 O sw ) and the gradient between planktic and benthic foraminiferal δ 13 C. A prominent increase in mixed layer temperatures of ~4°C occurred between 5.55 and 5.28 Ma, accompanied by a change from precession‐ to obliquity‐driven variability in planktic δ 18 O and δ 18 O sw . We suggest that an intensified cross‐equatorial transport of heat and moisture, paced by obliquity, led to increased summer monsoon precipitation during warm stages after 5.55 Ma. Transient cold stages were characterized by reduced mixed layer temperatures and summer monsoon failure, thus resembling late Pleistocene stadials. In contrast, an overall cooler background climate state with a strengthened biological pump prevailed prior to 5.55 Ma. These findings highlight the importance of internal feedback processes for the long‐term evolution of the Indian Monsoon.

Abstract:The Holocene, Ahead of Print. The Indian Central Himalaya Region (ICHR), the northern topographic front of the Indian summer monsoon (ISM), is an ideal location to study topography-climate interactions because two weather systems—the ISM and mid-latitude westerlies (MLW)—create distinct eco-climatic regimes from tundra (north) to tropical (south). The region's paleoclimatic studies show considerable climatic variations since the late Pleistocene. We evaluated 29 paleoclimatic records from the region and synthesized the results semi-quantitatively using the weighted palaeoclimate index (WApCI) to better understand the important climatic events and their driving mechanisms. According to the WApCI, the region has at least six enhanced monsoonal periods and eight drier spells during the past 34 ka. The cold-dry climatic events, such as the last glacial maxima (LGM), Younger Dryas (YD), 8.2 ka, and 4.2 ka, are associated with northern-hemisphere (NH) climate dynamics and propagated via MLWs. While, the warmer phases are dictated by the insolation-driven ISM dynamics. The WApCI's reconstructed rainfall anomaly aligns with paleoclimatic-model experiments for dynamically generated Paleoclimate Modeling Intercomparison Projects (PMIP3/PMIP4) rainfall for chosen time-slices (last-millenium, historical, mid-Holocene, and LGM). Finally, the Granger causality test determines the temporal relationship between the climatic drivers/forcing indices and primary meteorological parameters. The results showed that summer and post-monsoon precipitation is primarily influenced by total solar irradiation, winter precipitation is driven by a complex mix of variables, and pre-monsoon precipitation is driven by the Arctic oscillation. Based on the facts, we hypothesize that past climate variability demonstrates a complex interplay of local and hemisphere teleconnections in ICHR's climate dynamics.

Abstract:The modern Indian summer monsoon (ISM) is characterized by exceptionally strong interhemispheric transport, indicating the importance of both Northern and Southern Hemisphere processes driving monsoon variability. Here, we present a high-resolution continental record from southwestern China that demonstrates the importance of interhemispheric forcing in driving ISM variability at the glacial-interglacial time scale as well. Interglacial ISM maxima are dominated by an enhanced Indian low associated with global ice volume minima. In contrast, the glacial ISM reaches a minimum, and actually begins to increase, before global ice volume reaches a maximum. We attribute this early strengthening to an increased cross-equatorial pressure gradient derived from Southern Hemisphere high-latitude cooling. This mechanism explains much of the nonorbital scale variance in the Pleistocene ISM record.

The relative roles of such forcing can be elucidated by constructing robust paleoclimate records, which help to better predict future variability in precipitation due to rising greenhouse gases. This study was carried out using a suite of paleoclimate proxies on a combination of marine and terrestrial sediment cores from Sri Lanka. The sites receive differing amounts of precipitation from the ISM versus convective and cyclone-driven intermonsoon rainfall and allow differentiation of precipitation sources through time. The constructed 80000-year-long precipitation record for the ISM-dominant regions of Sri Lanka shows strong sensitivity to orbital scale insolation variations as well as to millennial-scale events in the North Atlantic region. This precipitation response to external and internal forcings is a result of the combined effects of ISM and Intermonsoon intensity either of which dominated periodically. The strong positive correlation between different periods in the precipitation record and different monthly insolation curves shows that changes in solar insolation due to precession decide the dominant rainfall mechanism in the region, suggesting the ISM dominated after 13 ka (MIS1) while the first intermonsoon dominated between 29 and 13 ka (MIS2) and the second intermonsoon dominated period between 77 and 40 ka.

Abstract:Pollen analysis and radiocarbon dating of a 1.4 m deep lacustrine sediment profile from Chhattisgarh State, central India, in the core monsoon zone (CMZ), has revealed the vegetation history, associated climate change and the Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) rainfall variability during the Late-Holocene. The pollen evidence suggests that between ca. 3000 and 2600 cal year BP, tree-savannah vegetation occurred in the region having a comparatively lesser monsoon rainfall. The forest expanded and culminated into an open-mixed tropical deciduous forest between ca. 2600 and 2200 cal year BP under a warm and moderately humid climate with an increase in monsoon rainfall. Subsequently, between ca. 2200 and 2000 cal year BP, the existing open-mixed tropical deciduous forest transformed into a mixed tropical deciduous forest under a warm and humid climate with further increase in monsoon rainfall. Finally, between ca. 2000 and 1800 cal year BP, a dense mixed tropical deciduous forest occupied the landscape under a regime of a warm and relatively more humid climate with further strengthening of the ISM. The gradual warming, and the climatic amelioration with the intensification of the ISM, during the Late-Holocene (ca. 2600–1800 cal year BP; ~650 BC to AD150) corresponds to the Roman Warm Period (RWP), recorded globally between 2500 and1600 cal year BP (~550 BC to AD ~350). Human activities were present around the study area, which varied according to the ISM variations. The present study provides insights into the gradual intensification of the monsoon since the last ca. 2600 cal year BP (between ca. 2600 and1800 cal year BP), and an increase in the ISM strength in the CMZ of India, against the generally weakening trend during the Late-Holocene.

Abstract:A robust, well-dated record of centennial-scale abrupt changes in the Asian summer monsoon is crucial for understanding the potential forcing factors and their environmental effects. In this study, we analyzed the stable carbon isotopes of pyrogenic carbon (delta C-13(PC)) in a 556-cm long sediment core retrieved from Lake Chenghai in the Yunnan Plateau, China. The results provide a continuous 7660-year precipitation record of the Indian summer monsoon (ISM). They indicate that from similar to 7600 cal yr BP precipitation in the Lake Chenghai catchment gradually increased until 5030 cal yr BP, and then subsequently decreased in the second half of the Holocene. In addition, at least six centennial-scale droughts occurred at about 7300, 6300, 5500, 3400, 2500 and 500 cal yr BP. Our findings suggest that ISM intensity is primary controlled by variations in solar irradiance on a centennial time scale. This external forcing may be amplified by North Atlantic cooling events and El Nino-Southern Oscillation activity in the eastern tropical Pacific, which shift the intertropical convergence zone further southwards. Holocene variation in the Indian Summer Monsoon modulated by the tropical Indian Ocean sea-surface temperature mode

Abstract:The evolution of the Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) has been widely investigated owing to its significant climatic and socioeconomic influences. However, debates remain concerning the temporal variation during the Holocene and its driving mechanisms, particularly the potential contribution of sea-surface temperature (SST) in the tropical Indian Ocean (TIO). Here, we present a continuous sediment record covering the past 11.1 kyrs from the Beihai Wetland, southwestern China. The grain size, geochemical element composition and total organic carbon content (TOC) were analyzed and interpreted in terms of the sedimentary conditions, catchment erosion and regional climate variations. Higher detrital inputs and possibly high water levels were determined during the early to mid-Holocene period, suggesting strong catchment erosion under an intensified ISM. The maximum monsoon intensity appeared between 7.5 and 5.2 cal. kyr BP, which is broadly consistent with various ISM records. We propose that such mid-Holocene monsoon strengthening was primarily triggered by the TIO SST anomaly modes, i.e., the Indian Ocean Basin (IOB) mode and the Indian Ocean dipole (IOD) mode. Based on Holocene SST records from the TIO, a positive SST anomaly (positive IOB mode) and positive zonal SST anomaly gradient (positive IOD mode) may have occurred during the mid-Holocene, which jointly triggered intensifi-cation of the ISM. Our findings emphasize the significant contribution of the TIO in modulating the summer monsoon system. The abrupt increases in TOC content and median grain size indicate the formation of the current wetland system at approximately 5.2 cal. kyr BP following the decline in regional moisture as well as the retreat of the ISM. In addition, notable human impacts were determined during the last 800 years, as indicated by intensified catchment erosion in response to human-induced deforestation.

Abstract:The Holocene, Ahead of Print. Monsoon precipitation plays a crucial role in shaping the diversity of vegetation in the Himalayas, both in terms of temporal and spatial distribution. While palynology has traditionally been employed to reconstruct the past climate of the Himalaya, there has been limited understanding of how monsoon-related changes affect the structure and distribution of vegetation. To address this, we analysed pollen data from a 3 m deep sedimentary profile in the higher Sikkim Himalaya to reconstruct monsoon driven changes in vegetation diversity. Our results show a highly fluctuating trend of pollen and diversity parameters at late-Pleistocene-Holocene transition for which fluctuating hydroclimatic conditions and differential pollen preservation in coarser sediments is attributed. During the Early Holocene (10,438–7934 cal yrs BP) favourable hydroclimatic conditions led to a rapid expansion of mixed broad-leaved forests, marked by higher values of richness and alpha diversity. Between 7934 and 5481 cal yrs BP, the region experienced moderate hydroclimatic conditions that facilitated expansion and diversification of woody taxa, and correlated with the global Holocene Climate Optimum (HCO). Conversely, from 5481 to3949 cal yrs BP, declining total pollen count (TPC), species richness, and alpha diversity indicates significant shifts in vegetation composition under deteriorating climatic conditions, which corresponds with the 4.2 ka event worldwide. From 3949 to 2049 cal yrs BP, an increasing yet variable trend in TPC and diversity indices, suggests warm-humid conditions prevailed in the region. During the last 1086 cal yrs, an increasing trend is recorded in the palyno assemblage and diversity parameters suggesting ameliorating climate, matches well with the Mediaeval Climate Anomaly (MCA). Our inferences suggest that the palyno assemblage and diversity parameters are quiet sensitive to warm and humid conditions.

Abstract:The temperature and moisture distribution over the Indian subcontinent are changing in recent decades with the accelerated global temperature rise. These changes in distribution result in shifting wet/dry and warm/cold zones within India. The differential warming rate over land and surrounding ocean determine intricate dynamics of the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) and make the Indian region a more susceptible towards drought and flood events. In recent time, the frequent flooding over northwest India viz., over Gujrat and southern Rajasthan is attributed to the weakening of prevailing heat-trough circulation (northerly wind) and gradual increase in the convective activity (enhanced moist static energy). The recent weakening of the southwesterly reduced transport of moisture leading to reduced rainfall over Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) and northeast India; while the strengthening of the same enhanced the moisture transport and hence the rainfall over northwest India. In addition, northward shift of the sinking airmass over equatorial region, in recent time, leads to the decrease of the rainfall over the southern Indian region. The recent changes in rainfall pattern have shifted the climate of IGP and northeast India towards the relatively arid regime and that of western India towards a relatively moist regime, which supports the possible greening of the Thar region. The recent change in rainfall distribution in the form of wet and dry zones across the country will impact the water resource, food security as well as the fragile local ecosystems.
