By analyzing various research endeavors and key technologies, encompassing ontology structure, control and decision-making, and perception and interaction, a holistic overview of the current state of humanoid robot research is presented. Furthermore, emerging challenges in the field are identified, emphasizing the necessity for a deeper understanding of biological motion mechanisms, improved structural design, enhanced material applications, advanced drive and control methods, and efficient energy utilization. The integration of bionics, brain-inspired intelligence, mechanics, and control is underscored as a promising direction for the development of advanced humanoid robotic systems. Abstract:Humanoid robot has been one of the most active research topics in the field of robotics. Their human-like form and configuration gives it advantages in working in human-interactive environment. The bipedal walking capability makes them possible to step over and onto obstacles, providing accessibility and mobility in cluttered space. The multi-DOF design of arms and legs enables them assist or replace humans in their normal tasks, making human life easier and safer. Humanoid robots, with their human-like outlook, also bring better interactive experience and are expect to play a part in people's daily life and help the elderly and the children.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) technology has greatly expanded human capabilities through perception, understanding, action, and learning. The future of AI depends on cooperation between humans and AI. In addition to a fully automated or manually controlled machine, a machine can work in tandem with a human with different levels of assistance and automation. Machines and humans cooperate in different ways. Three strategies for cooperation are described in this article, as well as the nesting relationships among different control methods and cooperation strategies. Based on human thinking and behavior, a hierarchical human-machine cooperation (HMC) framework is improved and extended to design safe, efficient, and attractive systems. We review the common methods of perception, decision-making, and execution in the HMC framework. Future applications and trends of HMC are also discussed.

Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to provide technical details of humanoid robot developments from the 1970s to the present day and to consider their potential applications and prospects. Design/methodology/approach Following an introduction, this first identifies the motivations for developing humanoid robots. It then provides a technical review of developments conducted between the 1970s and the late 2010s. The most recent developments and their applications are then discussed and the paper concludes with a brief consideration of future prospects. Findings Since the first efforts to develop humanoid robots in Japan, the 1970s, the technology has attracted global interest and progress has been dramatic. Enabled by developments in computing, imaging, sensing, power sources, actuators and other technologies, today’s humanoid robots are agile, stable and capable of all manner of human-like capabilities such as running, climbing stairs and carrying heavy loads. Real-world uses in fields such as construction, assembly, disaster response and home assistance are expected to emerge in the near future as a result of application-specific developments. Originality/value This illustrates the technological evolution of humanoid robots from their inception in the 1970s to the present day.

Abstract:For humanoid robot, the current status and future development at home and abroad are reviewed in this paper. Meanwhile, the present researching characteristics are analyzed and the existing problems in the humanoid robots studies are pointed out. According to the current problems, some expectations were made for the future study. Abstract:The rapidly improving mechanical systems and control algorithms of humanoid robots brings them ever-closer to integration with humans in-situ. As this trend begins a process of research robots to general products, the dissemination of design decisions and application-specific compromises becomes as equally important as the underlying technology itself. Like-wise, the newly discovered applications and societal integration raise new questions for research, including how a humanoid robot should look - and what technological innovations are needed to support such look. While the uncanny valley is often the forefront of humanoid robot design discussions, we present a new full-size humanoid robot named TOCABI, that side-steps the valley and brings forth the question of academic challenges needed to support a new paradigm of industrial design for humanoid robots.

Abstract:The development of a versatile, fully-capable humanoid robot as envisioned in science fiction books is one of the most challenging but interesting issues in the robotic field. Currently, existing humanoid robots are designed with different purposes and applications in mind. In humanoid robot development process, each robot is designed with various characteristics, abilities, and equipment, which influence the general structure, cost, and difficulty of development. Even though humanoid robot development is very popular, a few review papers are focusing on the design and development process of humanoid robots. Motivated by this, we present this review paper to show variations in the requirements, design, and development process and also propose a taxonomy of existing humanoid robots. It aims at demonstrating a general perspective of existing humanoid robots' characteristics and applications. This paper includes state-of-the-art and successfully reported existing humanoid robot designs along with different robots used in various robot competitions.

Abstract:Spawned by fast-paced progress in new materials and integrate circuit technology, the past two decades have witnessed tremendous development of humanoid robots for both scientific and commercial purposes, e.g. emergency response and daily life assistant. At the root of this trend are the increasing research interests and cooperation opportunities across different laboratories and countries. The application-driven requirements of high effectiveness and reliability of humanoid robots led intensive research and development in humanoid locomotion and control theories. In spite of the progress in the area, challenges such as unnatural locomotion control, inefficient multi-motion planning, and relatively slow disturbances recovery set further requirements for the next generation of humanoid robots. Therefore, the purpose of this work is to review the current development of highly representative bipedal humanoid robots and discuss the potential to move the ideas and models forward from laboratory settings into the real world. To this end, we also review the current clinical understanding of the walking and running dynamics to make the robot more human-like.

Abstract:Whole-body humanoid robot, which regards human beings as the reference prototype, is the most representative research object and the ultimate goal of robotics, robot technology and artificial intelligence. Comprehensive review, summary and analysis of current theories and key technologies in whole-body humanoid robot, humanoid head, multi-finger hand, humanoid biped walking machine and so on are given, including review of the relevant works on humanoid robots by the author. By summarizing the current technical level of humanoid robots' development, the main technical problems and the trend of the future development are respectively discussed in the aspects of driving elements, walking stability, integrated designation and operation ability of the mechanical systems, environment adaptability and so on. References of decision making are provided for researchers and managers engaged in the relevant works of humanoid robots and their components.

Abstract:In the approximately century-long journey of robotics, humanoid robots made their debut around six decades ago. The rapid advancements in generative AI, large language models (LLMs), and large multimodal models (LMMs) have reignited interest in humanoids, steering them towards real-time, interactive, and multimodal designs and applications. This resurgence unveils boundless opportunities for AI robotics and novel applications, paving the way for automated, real-time and humane interactions with humanoid advisers, educators, medical professionals, caregivers, and receptionists. However, while current humanoid robots boast human-like appearances, they have yet to embody true humaneness, remaining distant from achieving human-like intelligence. In our comprehensive review, we delve into the intricate landscape of AI robotics and AI humanoid robots in particular, exploring the challenges, perspectives and directions in transitioning from human-looking to humane humanoids and fostering human-like robotics. This endeavour synergizes the advancements in LLMs, LMMs, generative AI, and human-level AI with humanoid robotics, omniverse, and decentralized AI, ushering in the era of AI humanoids and humanoid AI.

Abstract:Robots existed as separate entities till now, but the horizons of a symbiotic human-robot partnership are impending. Despite all the recent technical advances in terms of hardware, robots are still not endowed with desirable relational skills that ensure a social component in their existence. Abstract:The goal of RoboCup is to make research in the area of robotics measurable over time, and grow a community that works together to solve increasingly difficult challenges over the years. The most ambitious of these challenges it to be able to play against the human world champions in soccer in 2050. To better understand what members of the RoboCup community believes to be the state of the art and the main challenges in the next decade and towards the 2050 game, we developed a survey and distributed it to members of different experience level and background within the community. We present data from 39 responses. Results highlighted that locomotion, awareness and decision-making, and robustness of robots are among those considered of high importance for the community, while human-robot interaction and natural language processing and generation are rated of low in importance and difficulty.

Abstract:Application of humanoid robots has been common in the field of healthcare and education. It has been recurrently used to improve social behavior and mollify distress level among children with autism, cancer and cerebral palsy. This article discusses the same from a human factors perspective. It shows how people of different age and gender have a different opinion towards the application and acceptance of humanoid robots. Additionally, this article highlights the influence of cerebral condition and social interaction on a user behavior and attitude towards humanoid robots. Our study performed a literature review and found that (a) children and elderly individuals prefer humanoid robots due to inactive social interaction, (b) The deterministic behavior of humanoid robots can be acknowledged to improve social behavior of autistic children, (c) Trust on humanoid robots is highly driven by its application and a user age, gender, and social life.

It presents a multi-dimensional exploration through different interaction scenarios, ranging from fetus-mother interactions to advanced large language models like ChatGPT, revealing the intrinsic connection between the physical and social realms of existence. In conclusion, this paper broadens the horizon of our understanding of the intricate interplays between physical embodiment and social interaction, setting the stage for more nuanced, ethically sound approaches and explorations in the realm of humanoid robotics and artificial intelligence.

Abstract:The first industrial robot was set along the production line in Japan in 1969. Through the miracle recovery of the great economic growth in post-war Japan, more robots were developed. Today, we see robots operating in many environments other than indoor assembly lines. Meanwhile, robots truly have come of age as a result of amazing advances in programming (artificial intelligence) and sensor-information technology. In the future, we will find more super-intelligent humanoids coexisting with us, and cities will be structured as robot-friendly environments where not only humanoids but ubiquitous machines of all kinds with built-in computer, sensors, and actuators will enhance and supplement human existence in countless ways.

Abstract:Humanoid robots can achieve increasingly complex functions and adapt to more complex environments. To boost the development of humanoid robot technology, a team at Beijing Institute of Technology initiated the research on humanoid robots from 2000. Their research primarily focuses on stable walking, whole-body complex motion, human-robot interaction, and multimodal motion of humanoid robots. Thus far, the team has developed 6 generations of humanoid robots. The latest humanoid robot, BHR-6P, can achieve multi-mode motions (for example, walk, jump, fall protection, crawl and roll), which will significantly improve the ability of robot to adapt to the environment. This paper presented the historical evolution of BHR humanoid robots and outlined their functions and features.

Abstract:Recent technological advances in hardware design of the robotic platforms enabled the implementation of various control modalities for improved interactions with humans and unstructured environments. An important application area for the integration of robots with such advanced interaction capabilities is human–robot collaboration. This aspect represents high socio-economic impacts and maintains the sense of purpose of the involved people, as the robots do not completely replace the humans from the work process. The research community’s recent surge of interest in this area has been devoted to the implementation of various methodologies to achieve intuitive and seamless human–robot-environment interactions by incorporating the collaborative partners’ superior capabilities, e.g. human’s cognitive and robot’s physical power generation capacity. In fact, the main purpose of this paper is to review the state-of-the-art on intermediate human–robot interfaces (bi-directional), robot control modalities, system stability, benchmarking and relevant use cases, and to extend views on the required future developments in the realm of human–robot collaboration.
