Abstract:The recycling of waste carbon fibers (CF) has emerged as a crucial research area for both environmental protection and economic sustainability. To sufficiently exert the potential and extend the application life cycle of CFs, here we propose an eco-friendly and efficient electrostatic method for rapid recycling of tightly entangled reclaimed carbon fibers (rCFs) by spark-driven disentanglement and depolymerization. Our research indicates that the spark discharge generated by fiber induction under low-voltage conditions can excite the shock waves and Joule heating effects, resulting in the separation of individual rCFs and the removal of surface organic matrix. Furthermore, the constructed electric field can synchronously and continuously orient the dispersed rCFs to form a vertical alignment in a short time with good maneuverability and directionality for reutilization. The results demonstrate that this one-step disentanglement, depolymerization, and alignment method achieves a high-quality recycling process with 100% dispersion efficiency, minimal damage, cost-effectiveness, uniform distribution, upright orientation, and high-speed embedding performance. Our findings reveal the potential of the electrostatic strategy for the high-quality recycling of rCFs, in line with the principles of the circular economy. The proposed method offers broad prospects for application in continuous in-line production and material manufacturing, and is a step towards sustainable and cost-effective CF recycling.

Abstract:Using acetic acid instead of dimethylformamide as solvent, lignin-based nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning with industrial low molecular weight lignin. After pre-oxidation and carbonization, the fibril was transformed into carbon fiber. The results showed that different viscosity of spinning solution and different parameters of electrospinning have great influence on the morphology of fibers. The diameter of fibers could be concentrated in 300-500nm by using the best electrospinning process. After carbonizing the fibers, it was found that the lignin fibers could retain the morphology of the fibers after carbonization at a suitable heating rate and holding temperature. This study showed the conditions required for the preparation of carbon fiber from low molecular weight lignin, and provided a way for high value utilization of waste biomass and green preparation of carbon fiber.

Abstract:A nanofabrication method for the production of flexible core-shell structured silk elastin nanofibers is presented, based on an all-aqueous coaxial electrospinning process. In this process, silk fibroin (SF) and silk-elastin-like protein polymer (SELP), both in aqueous solution, with high and low viscosity, respectively, were used as the inner (core) and outer (shell) layers of the nanofibers. The electrospinnable SF core solution served as a spinning aid for the nonelectrospinnable SELP shell solution. Uniform nanofibers with average diameter from 301 ± 108 nm to 408 ± 150 nm were obtained through adjusting the processing parameters. The core-shell structures of the nanofibers were confirmed by fluorescence and electron microscopy. In order to modulate the mechanical properties and provide stability in water, the as-spun SF-SELP nanofiber mats were treated with methanol vapor to induce β-sheet physical crosslinks. FTIR confirmed the conversion of the secondary structure from a random coil to β-sheets after the methanol treatment. Tensile tests of SF-SELP core-shell structured nanofibers showed good flexibility with elongation at break of 5.20% ± 0.57%, compared with SF nanofibers with an elongation at break of 1.38% ± 0.22%. The SF-SELP core-shell structured nanofibers should provide useful options to explore in the field of biomaterials due to the improved flexibility of the fibrous mats and the presence of a dynamic SELP layer on the outer surface.
Highly Strong and Conductive Carbon Fibers Originated from Bioinspired Lignin/Nanocellulose Precursors Obtained by Flow-Assisted Alignment and In Situ Interfacial Complexation

Abstract:Composite filaments comprised of lignin and cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) were fabricated by a microfluidic spinning technique together with in situ interfacial complexation. The hierarchical assembly of well-ordered lignin/CNFs cross-linked using chitosan by ionic bonds resulted in the high orientation degree and compact microstructure of the filament, which was a promising precursor of carbon fibers. After stabilization and carbonization, bio-based carbon fibers with fine graphite microcrystals were obtained and carbon lattice was highly oriented along the fiber direction, contributing to the superior macro-performance. When the content of lignin was 75 wt %, the tensile strength and electrical conductivity of the carbon fibers reached 1648 MPa and 185.3 S/cm, respectively, surpassing the most reported values in the literature. Furthermore, a combined TG-FTIR approach was applied to further analyze the carbonization process of lignin/CNF precursors. The excellent mechanical and electrical performance of the bio-based carbon fibers would broaden their applications as a reinforcing agent and an electrical device. Abstract:Bio-based carbon fibers derived from lignin have gained significant attention due to their diverse and renewable sources, ease of extraction, and low cost. However, the current limitations of low specific surface area and insufficient electrical conductivity hinder the widespread application of lignin-derived carbon fibers (LCFs). In this work, highly conductive and porous LCFs are developed through melt-blowing, pretreatment, and carbonization processes. The effects of the carbonization temperature and heating rate on the structures and properties of the LCFs are systematically investigated. The resultant LCFs exhibit high electrical conductivity (71 400 S m-1) and a large specific surface area (923 m2 g-1). The assembled lithium-ion battery based on the LCF anodes demonstrates a long cycle life of >800 cycles and a high specific capacity of 466 mA h g-1. The findings of this study hold practical significance for promoting the utilization of lignin in the fields of energy storage, adsorption, and beyond.

Abstract:Carbon nanofibers are a type of carbon material known for their high mechanical strength and multifunctionality, and they have promising applications in fields such as electronics, transportation, and aerospace. Currently, the majority of carbon nanofibers are produced using nonrenewable resources such as polyacrylonitrile, which makes them relatively expensive. However, lignin, as an inexpensive and renewable resource, is considered a potential alternative material for carbon nanofiber production. This article explores the classification, molecular structure, and extraction methods of lignin, summarizing the preparation methods for lignin-based carbon nanofibers, including spinning and chemical vapor deposition. Furthermore, we address challenges such as low density and poor orientation in lignin-based carbon nanofibers and provide an overview of reinforcement methods such as drawing, rolling, and particle doping to overcome these limitations. Additionally, we focus on their primary applications in devices like supercapacitors, sodium-ion batteries, and lithium-ion batteries. Finally, we also offer a glimpse into the prospective advancements in lignin-based carbon nanofiber development.

Abstract:As a major component of lignocellulosic biomass, lignin is one of the largest natural resources of biopolymers and, thus, an abundant and renewable raw material for products, such as high-performance fibers for industrial applications. Direct conversion of lignin has long been investigated, but the fiber spinning process for lignin is difficult and the obtained fibers exhibit unsatisfactory mechanical performance mainly due to the amorphous chemical structure, low molecular weight of lignin, and broad molecular weight distribution. Therefore, different textile spinning techniques, modifications of lignin, and incorporation of lignin into polymers have been and are being developed to increase lignin’s spinnability and compatibility with existing materials to yield fibers with better mechanical performance. This review presents the latest advances in the textile fabrication techniques, modified lignin-based high-performance fibers, and their potential in the enhancement of the mechanical performance.

Abstract:At present, most carbon fibers are made from non-renewable polyacrylonitrile (PAN). Substantial efforts have been made to replace the need for petroleum-based precursors for carbon fiber production. Interestingly, lignin is a carbon fiber precursor material that is cheap, highly available, and sustainable. Sub-micron scale lignin-based carbon nanofibers could find use in numerous areas, such as electronic devices, batteries, supercapacitors, and low-cost, high performance structural composite materials. Trackspinning (TS) technology offers a way scale the versatile, but inefficient mechanical pulling technique to produce small diameter lignin fibers from environmentally friendly aqueous solutions. In this study, the effects of track spinning based on probe drawing of low concentration lignin nanofibers blended with polyethylene oxide (PEO) and glycerol in sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution were investigated. TS lignin fibers were well aligned and reached diameters as low as 500-1000 nm as the drawing length was increased. Lignin fiber macromolecular alignment was isotropic at low levels of draw and dichroic ratio was increased from 1 to 2.25 by doubling the drawing length. The most highly drawn track-spun lignin fibers had a mechanical strength of 3.92 MPa and a Young's Modulus of 2.15 GPa, which were similar to reported values for solvent electrospun lignin nanofibers. These findings support the potential to utilize TS to produce small diameter lignin fibers using a simple aqueous solvent approach.

Abstract:Compared to carbon fibers made from conventional petroleum-based precursors, lignin-based carbon fibers can lower the production cost while enabling cleaner manufacturing. The use of lignin-based carbon fibers is currently hindered by their poor mechanical properties that are mainly attributed to the lack of orientability in lignin structure. Herein, we demonstrated a novel method of producing high-quality carbon fiber, by which lignin is first transformed into a new precursor polymer with a linear molecular orientation, and the precursor is subsequently melt-processed. Specifically, a raw red oak lignin bio-oil consisting of multifunctional compounds with distributed molecular weights was converted into a lightly branched, acrylate polymer via a hybrid functionalization followed by controlled radical polymerization. By carefully investigating different synthesis parameters and determining the effects of the intrinsic properties of the crude lignin bio-oil have on the polymerization, a melt-spinnable thermoplastic polymer could be obtained in high yield. The new polymer was then used to produce carbon fiber with average tensile strength of 1.70 GPa and tensile modulus of 182 GPa. Our analysis results indicated that the new precursor structure can improve the degree of graphitization and reduce structural defects in the resulting carbon fiber. Structural analyses showed that the carbon fiber contains a highly ordered and well-stacked turbostratic structure. Overall, this study presents a promising approach to produce low-cost, high-quality carbon fiber that may have applications in the automobile industries.

Abstract:The production of low-cost and high-quality carbon fibers (CFs) from biorenewable lignin precursors has been of worldwide interest for decades. Although numerous works have been reported and the proposed "1.72 GPa/172 GPa" target set by the Department of Energy (DOE) has been closely met in a few studies, most lignin-based CFs (LCFs) have poor strength properties compared to industrial PAN (polyacrylonitrile)-based CFs. The production of LCFs involves several steps, and the final quality of LCFs is governed by both lignin's properties and the manufacturing processes. Therefore, understanding the key factors of producing high quality LCF is of high importance. In this review, we firstly outlined several lignin's properties (e.g., impurities, thermal properties, molecular structure) that may play important role in determining its processability and suitability as carbon fiber precursor. Secondly, conversion strategies include spinning, stabilization and carbonization, and corresponding parameters influencing the final quality of LCF are comprehensively analyzed. Last, additional characterization methods are proposed as a means to facilitate analyzing of lignin and LCF. This review attempts to provide insights towards high-quality LCF production from both material and manufacturing aspects.

Abstract:A general synthetic method has been developed to fabricate and assemble ferromagnetic transition metal nanofibers. By employing the novel electrospinning technique followed by subsequent heat treatment, we have successfully prepared uniform nanofibers of Fe, Co, and Ni with diameters of similar to 25 nm and lengths longer than 100 mu m. Using a specially designed fiber collector, we can conveniently assemble magnetic nanofibers into aligned arrays. The electrospun magnetic metal nanofibers have unique magnetic properties, with much enhanced coercivities relative to bulk materials. The outstanding features of this approach to get one-dimensional magnetic nanostructure are its simplicity, effectiveness, and ease of assembly. Therefore, electrospun magnetic nanofibers can potentially be used in fabrication of high-density magnetic recording, magnetic sensors, flexible magnets, and spintronic devices.

Abstract:We have successfully prepared nanostructured LiCoO2 and LiMn2O4 fibers using a novel high frequency electrospinning method. These fibers were composed of very small crystalline grains uniformly linked with an average size less than 100 nm. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) were used to characterize their structures and electrochemical properties, respectively. These results suggested that a high frequency electrospinning was expected to be an effective method for the fabrication of inorganic composite fibers.

Abstract:To meet the huge market demand for carbon fibers (CFs), great efforts have been focused on developing low-cost and sustainable CFs with comparable properties. Lignin, a polyaromatic heteropolymer in nature, is considered as a promising precursor suitable for CFs fabrication due to its abundant, renewable, low-cost, high-carbon, thermostable, and thermoplastic characteristics. Although research on lignin-based carbon fibers (LCFs) has achieved impressive results, their mechanical properties are still inferior to those of commercialized CFs. In this review, the structural characteristics of the lignin polymers from different plant sources and isolation methods are introduced. The key factors affecting LCFs performances and the effective strategies aiming to improve the properties of LCFs are also summarized in detail, revealing the influences of structural features of lignin on the performances of LCFs. Emphatically, recent advances in precursors, spinning techniques, stabilization, carbonization, graphitization, and activization of LCFs since 2017 are systematically reviewed. Furthermore, to expand the new applications of LCFs, a comprehensive overview of LCFs applications in diverse fields (electrochemical energy storage, adsorption, catalysis, and other emerging fields) is provided. Finally, the current challenges and opportunities for the future development of LCFs are proposed.

Abstract:As a new type of functional material, carbon fiber-derived materials have been regarded as promising electrocatalysts. Choosing a suitable carbon source and spinning process to prepare carbon fiber can maximize the electrocatalytic performance and resource recycling rate. Here, we use the waste lignin from the pulping industry to prepare lignin-based functional materials, electrospinning after blending with PEO. The obtained nanocomposite fiber exhibits the characteristics of anisotropic network structure and metal anchored by carbon fiber, improves conductivity, and provides a convenient channel for electron transmission. Furthermore, both the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in this study show that the prepared LFC-Ni/Co has good catalytic activity. This strategy not only provide guidance for the preparation of functional carbon fibers, but also promote the lignin development of high-value utilization.

Abstract:Lignin, as a widely distributed, renewable and environmentally friendly source of carbon, could been utilized for carbon nanofibers to not only maximize the usage of resources, but also expand the energy-related opportunities. In this research, flexible lignin-based carbon nanofibers are prepared by electrospinning lignin nanofibers in a new green aqueous solution of lignin and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), which is then characterized by physical and chemical characterizations. The results reveal that optimal carbonization temperature of 800 °C shows great improvements on the structural properties of lignin-based carbon nanofibers, which can be applied as binder-free electric double layer capacitor (EDLC) electrodes with good flexibility. The 2032 type button battery has a superior electrochemical performance with a large specific capacitance of 217.2 F g −1 at a 0.2 A g −1 current density, and remarkable cyclic stability of 94.9 % capacitance retention even after 10,000 charge and discharge cycles, due to the abundance of mesoporous volume and large microporous surface area of lignin-based carbon nanofiber electrodes carbonized in 800 °C.

Abstract:Lignin shows great potential for carbon-based functional materials and composite material electronics. However, high heterogeneity, poor thermal stability, and low molecular weight limit the practical application of lignin for fiber-shaped lignin-based materials, especially in the field of supercapacitors with high energy storage devices. Herein, a simple modification and fractionation strategy is designed to obtain lignin for the preparation of high-performance lignin-based carbon fibers (CFs). The modification and fractionation process effectively increases the molecular weight and reduces the heterogeneity of lignin. The introduction of lignin with large molecular weight and low heterogeneity is conducive to reduce the carbon weight loss of the precursor fibers, maintain the morphology of lignin-based CFs, and then significantly improve the specific surface area and energy storage properties. The specific surface area and energy storage density of the obtained lignin-based CFs reach 2042.86 m2/g and 442.2 F/g, respectively. Lignin samples with different chemical structures are prepared by polymerization modification and fractionation. This strategy completely gets rid of the dependence on petroleum-based polymers in the electrospinning process, and makes the lignin-based CFs show good performance in energy storage, temperature sensor, and moisture power generation. The specific capacitance and energy of lignin-based supercapacitors reach 357.2 F/g and 31.5 Wh/kg, respectively. The CFs exhibit good flame retardancy and thermal sensitivity, and the response time is 1 s. In addition, moisture power generators assembled with CFs exhibit great potential. The output voltage of moisture power generators has a linear relationship with the number of devices. With the increase of series equipment, the output voltage of 5 series moisture power generators is 4.7 V. This work provides a new approach to prepare high-performance lignin-based carbon nanofibers, which has a good application prospect in the fields of energy storage, sensing and power generation.

Abstract:It is of great challenge to prepare lignin-derived carbon microfibers with suitable graphite crystallites due to the volatilization of incorporated polymers. In this work, we proposed a simple method for the construction of graphite crystallites based on the regulation of the hydrogen-bonding interaction between hardwood Kraft lignin (HKL) and poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) (PMIA). The strong hydrogen-bonding interaction demonstrated by the results of TG, FTIR, XPS, Raman and XRD increased the graphite crystal size and perfected the crystal structure of HKL-based carbon microfibers, which further enhanced the electrochemical performance of HKL/PMIA-based carbon microfibers electrodes, especially for the increase of capacitance and cycle performance and the decrease of charge transfer resistance. The specific capacitance, energy density and power density of P2H2-based (HKL/PMIA = 1:1) carbon microfibers electrode were up to 190.8 F g−1, 34.4 Wh kg−1 and 540 W kg−1 at a current density of 0.5 A g−1, respectively, which were comparable to or even higher than those of lignin composites-based carbon fibers electrodes. This work reveals the relationship between hydrogen-bonding interaction and crystalline structure, which can be further considered in the preparation of lignin-based carbon fibers electrodes.
