Abstract:Elevated concentration of total phosphorus (TP) or reactive phosphate (PO 4 3- ) in aquaculture wastewater (AW) can cause eutrophication to the wastewater discharge ponds. This work aims to evaluate the effectiveness of calcined eggshell (CES) in recovering TP and PO 4 3- alongside with its mechanism from actual AW. Eggshell waste collected from domestic source was pyrolyzed at 800 °C for 30 min with particle size less than 90 µm. Characterization indicated that the surface functional groups of CES played the major role in the adsorption process. Mechanism studies fitted well with Freundlich model for TP, however, the Langmuir model best described the adsorption of PO 4 3- . The adsorption process was better represented by pseudo-second-order with a maximum adsorption capacity of 2.47 mg/g and 2.24 mg/g for TP and PO 4 3 , respectively indicating chemisorption activity by CES. The thermodynamic studies suggested that the adsorption process was exothermic, feasible and spontaneous in nature. The result revealed CES could recover up to 98.40 and 99.63% of TP and PO 4 3- , respectively, from AW at 25 °C. Eggshell waste can be used as a sustainable alternative to effectively recover phosphorus from AW.
