Abstract:Against the backdrop of rural deprivation during the rapid urbanization of China since the end of the previous century, rural renewal has been regarded as a vital strategy for facilitating rural sustainability. Rural renewal in contemporary China involves activities that replan, consolidate, and redevelop the extant and idle rural construction land and then convert such land for alternative uses, including new rural settlement construction and rural industry development. However, given the regionally decentralized authoritarian (RDA) regime of China, i.e., a combination of political centralization and economic regional decentralization, the governance of rural renewal and its performance show great diversity. The objective of this study was to explore and elucidate the underlying patterns of sustainable rural renewal. Thus, from the social-ecological systems (SES) perspective, an archetype analysis was conducted based on primary data from 27 cases from the eastern, central, and western parts of China. In total, eight archetypical patterns were extracted, and the following three overarching implications were observed: (1) a governance system aligning with the attributes of rural land resources, the characteristics of actors, and the properties of interactions is essential for sustainable rural renewal; (2) decentralized or self-organized governance emerges to facilitate sustainable rural renewal; and (3) a long-term perspective of designing and enforcing rural renewal and distinctive land resource endowment contribute to rural sustainability. These findings may benefit China and other regions pursuing rural sustainability.

Abstract:In recent years, rural-urban integrated development has become a vital national strategy in China. In this context, many regions have implemented rural renewal projects to enhance the vitality and development of rural areas. The objective of this study is to reveal the reasons why different rural renewal modes have emerged in contemporary China and assess their ability to facilitate rural-urban integration. An analytical framework, the Institution of Sustainability (IoS) and a comparative analysis of two cases are used for the rural renewal evaluation. Our findings indicate that the properties of transactions and the characteristics of the actors involved jointly determine the governance structures of rural renewal. Furthermore, different governance structures contribute to performance differences, particularly differences in the physical outcomes, distribution effects and process efficiency. Finally, we suggest relevant policy recommendations.

Abstract:Rural ecology is a comprehensive field of study that takes the rural social-ecological-economic systems as the objective object and emphasizes spatial carrier governance. The development of rural ecology in the New Era embodies and implements comprehensively the core concepts of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Cha-racteristics for a New Era, including harmonious coexistence between humans and nature, rural revitalization, green development, and the comprehensive construction of a socialist modernized nation. Under the goal of Chinese-style modernization, rural ecology exhibits characteristics distinct from the past, such as the integration of research objects, the intersectionality of basic theories, the computational feature of technical methods, and the orientation of exporting outcomes. To provide disciplinary support for modernization-oriented science to meet the new demands of country's rural development, effectively narrating the story of sustainable rural development in China and providing fundamental guarantees for the safety of rural systems, a number of issues such as paradigm innovation in research, improvement of data quality, and integration of comprehensive technologies, should be fully considered.

Abstract:This article aims to discuss how to give full play to the comparative advantages of the rural ecological environment and realize the endogenous development of rural society and economy in China. First, based on the ecological economy theory of “lucid waters and lush mountains are golden and silver mountains” (the “two mountains” theory), we integrated the theories and methods of ecology, economics, and geography disciplines to examine the transformation of “ecological advantages” into “economic development” from a comprehensive perspective. Second, based on the matching relationship between the division of major function zones and the classification of ecological services, we creatively constructed a theoretical framework for the endogenous development of rural areas. Third, accounting indicators and methods for rural ecological products’ biophysical quantity and monetary value are established. Finally, we conducted an empirical study of Nanshi Village in central China as a case. The results showed that: The benefits provided by ecosystems to the development of human society would be underestimated if it is measured only by the provisioning services; the per capita Gross Ecosystem Product (GEP) of the case area was three times the per capita disposable income of rural permanent residents in the same period. Taking advantage of the rural ecological environment to promote the actual transformation of the potential value of ecological products is the feasible path for rural revitalization. One of the implications of this study is that it links the rural ecological and environmental advantages with social and economic development from the perspective of ecological economics and provides decision-making support for this case and other similar rural ecological industry revitalization practices.

Abstract:Ecological civilization is a new stage of human civilization. It is a more complex, more progressive and more advanced mode, accompanying the development of human society. In China, the promulgation of ecological civilization has been promoted to the level of national development strategies and has been gradually put into practice. From the perspective of the relationship between man and nature, the paper is started by analyzing the evolution process of human civilization, underlying that ecological civilization is a new form preceding the primitive civilization, agricultural civilization and industrial civilization. Furthermore, the paper explains the international and domestic backdrop for promoting ecological civilization in China. Based on the changes of the national development concepts since the foundation of a new China, this paper interprets the five opportunities for promoting ecological civilization in China. Finally, the paper proposes strategic recommendations based on the current situation, in order to provide reference for ecological civilization theory and practice in China.

Abstract:Rural ecotourism is of great significance to the construction of a new countryside in China, including thepromotion of social progress in rural areas, the adjustment of the agricultural industrial structure, and theincrease of farmers' income, which have huge development space. The prerequisite for the development of ruralecotourism is to rely on the current large-scale construction of new rural areas, avoid investment waste, destroythe agricultural ecological environment and lead to barren farmland, and farmers ’investment failures.Development ideas, improve social economic and ecological benefits, and have an effective role in promotingthe steady progress of new rural construction. First, this article starts with the basic concepts of rural ecotourismand new rural construction, and compares and analyzes the development, background, and main characteristicsof rural ecotourism at home and abroad, and evaluates the development of rural ecotourism in China. Secondly,the relationship between rural ecotourism and the construction of a new countryside is analyzed. Thesignificance of developing rural ecotourism to the construction of a new socialist countryside in China isdiscussed from all angles and levels. This article takes Shahe City, Hebei Province as an example to developrural ecotourism in the construction of a new countryside, and analyzes its tourism development status. Basedon its development orientation and basic conditions, it summarizes the main measures for the development ofrural ecotourism in Shahe City, Hebei Province and promote the effectiveness of new rural construction. Datashow that Shahe's income from tourism increased by 31.5% year-on-year, and income from receiving foreigntourists rose by 8.9%. Finally, some suggestions are made for the development of rural ecotourism and newcountryside construction in China. It is pointed out that the development of rural ecotourism needs to adhere togovernment leadership, pay attention to brand building, launch excellent rural ecotourism demonstration bases,implement differentiated competition, and strengthen the overall level of services.

Abstract:The world is in an era of ecological civilization after undergoing primitive civilization, agricultural civilization, and industrial civilization, which indicates that China's urban and rural planning is also in a new environment. The Chinese Communist Party and Government have proposed to "prioritize ecological civilization construction" and "make efforts to build a beautiful China to realize a sustainable development." In response to the current situation and the future trend of urban development, China has to achieve significant changes in urban transitional development. During the process that China carried out low carbon eco-city construction, it has gained a lot and also met with difficulties. From the perspective of ecological civilization, China has to alter its urban and rural planning concept, aim higher planning objectives, optimize planning contents, innovate planning technologies, and make relevant planning policies.

Abstract:Urban–rural linkages, which inevitably evolve over time, are influenced by economic, geographic, and demographic factors. In this paper, emergy accounting was used to calculate sustainability indicators and examine the metabolic processes that connect natural environments and rural–urban systems. A map of energy and material flow was visualized with a Sankey diagram, and urban–rural linkages were quantified according to ecological networks. Both rural and urban areas had open metabolic cycles, but the rural system was more dependent on the natural environment and showed better environmental performance. Urban–rural linkages reflected economic transformations during urbanization and formed a complex web of connections. The rural area’s economy and social system were unique in that they were not traditionally self-sufficient. Both rural and urban systems exploited the natural environment. From an ecological perspective, a competitive relationship exists between rural and urban systems, which may result in resource conflict and weaken the sustainability of urban and rural areas. The modern urban–rural linkage indicates a new trans-territorial type of rural system, the town village, which is an emerging phenomenon unique to China and imposes household registration systems. Urbanization has reshaped urban–rural linkages, and thereby influenced system sustainability. The results suggest that new resource management policies should be developed to coordinate the relationship between China’s urban and rural systems during urbanization.

Abstract:This study reveals that ecological intercorrelation in urban-rural area is a key role in changes of unobserved environmental effects of urban pollution, energy use inefficiency, and cultivated land loss. In a deductive model, we find that inequivalent economic growth in urban-rural area results in the variability of eco-efficiency of industrial production in urban area, which increases the risks of environmental effect to adjacent suburban and rural area, and directly affects changes of unobserved environmental effect spatial-temporally. Through ecological intercorrelation, both observed and unobserved environmental effects in this dynamic mechanism are formed, consequently intensify the regional inequality of environmental pollution, and frustrate the future coordinative development of regional economy. By employing the data of case study area of Gaoyou in China, estimations show that observed eco-efficiency is getting better but unobserved eco-efficiency is getting worse until this place becomes an eco-city. This study has proved that ecological intercorrelation in some extent sustains unobserved environmental effects to affect regional environmental degradation.

Abstract:In an age of globalization,exploring the issue of ecology and environment has attracted the attention of many intellectuals and literary critics.Ecocriticism,after its introduction to China at the beginning of this century,has gradually been localized,becoming both a methodology and a theoretical perspective for literary criticism and research on ecology and the environment.Obviously,exploring the man-nature relationship dates back to ancient times not only in western literature but also in Chinese literature,which enables the author to construct postmodern literary eco-environmental ethics.It's worth noting,however,that only after the dissolution of anthropocentrism,can there appear the eco-centric mode of thinking,which is another subject matter the author tries to contribute to.The author believes that calling for postmodern literary environmental ethics may well guarantee harmonious relationships between man and nature and in turn facilitate the practice of the Scientific Concept of Development and the sustainable development strategy in China.

Abstract:Rural revitalization strategy is the basis of promoting the comprehensive construction of a well-off society. It aims to achieve the harmonious coexistence between man and nature and realize the green development of rural areas by creating a new ecological and livable rural development model. Implementing the rural revitalization strategy is an important deployment to promote the construction of socialist ecological civilization, and ecological revitalization is the key to implementing the rural revitalization strategy. To effectively integrate the construction of ecological civilization into all aspects and the whole process of economic construction, we need to deal with the cooperative governance relationship among government, market, social organizations and the public. At present, the requirements of rural ecological civilization construction in China are well known, but the forces that hinder and destroy the construction of rural ecological civilization still exist. Based on the perspective of multiple cooperative governance, this paper discusses the value status and path selection of rural ecological revitalization in the implementation of Rural Revitalization Strategy, so as to realize the win-win strategy of multiple subjects, and construct the multi subject collaborative governance to promote the construction of ecological civilization in China.

Abstract:China's ecological agriculture has played a pioneering role in sustainable development, which has attracted extensive attention and high praise from the international community. This paper systematically analyzed the development process of China's eco-agriculture, by combining with the practice of ecological agriculture construction in China for many years and the construction process of modern ecological agriculture base of the Ministry of Agriculture, and comprehensive literature research. The results showed that: 1) The development of China's eco-agriculture has gone through two periods: traditional ecological agriculture and modern ecological agriculture. Traditional ecological agriculture provides rich production experience. China's modern agricultural ecology has experienced four development stages: initial exploration (1981–1992), expansion and consolidation (1993–2004), steady advancement (2005–2011) and innovation and promotion (2012–present). Each stage has distinctive features and landmark achievements, which rammed the foundation for the green and sustainable development of agriculture and rural areas in China; 2) China's modern ecological agriculture has been incorporated into the act of government in 1993, and has basically formed a five-level demonstration and driving system of ecological agriculture including 2 pilot provinces for eco-agriculture, 10 demonstration cities for circular agriculture, 100 demonstration counties for eco-agriculture, 12 demonstration bases for eco-agriculture, and 1100 beautiful villages, which cover province, municipality, county, base and village. The advancing mechanism of modern ecological agriculture of "small circulation in the main body, circulation in the park and large circulation in the county", has effectively promoted the development of ecological agriculture nationwide; 3) China's eco-agriculture has three distinct characteristics: comprehensiveness, sustainability and diversity. Its basic contents mainly include: agricultural ecology methodology and theoretical basis, optimization design of agricultural ecosystem, assembly and integrated application of eco-agricultural technology; 4) Under the trend of agricultural green development, China's eco-agriculture construction is innovating and improving system and mechanism, and ensuring the development towards high efficiency, industrialization, standardization, practicality and multi-function, thus gradually establishing a resource-saving, environment-friendly and ecological conservation-oriented modern ecological agricultural system with Chinese characteristics, constituting the ecological agriculture development pattern integrating rural production development, prosperous life and good ecology, and helping China's rural ecological revitalization.

Abstract:The rural industry is the foundation for promoting farmers' income and rural development, and adhering to the green development of the rural industry is the internal requirement for comprehensively promoting Rural Revitalization Strategy (RRS) in China. Firstly, the article explains the three aspects of China's rural eco-industries' development logic: the rural eco-industries have the historical inevitability of action under the Ecological Civilization (EC), academic rationality of development under the theory of urban-rural integration development, and strategic action under ecological poverty alleviation. Secondly, it establishes the six components of the Chinese rural eco-eco-industries' scientific connotation: one guiding concept, three theoretical foundations, three development carriers, two practical paths, a 3*3 development model, and two fundamental goals. Thirdly, Suggestions to encourage the development of rural eco-industry in the three dimensions of "space, organization, and subject" from primary mode to advanced mode.
