Abstract:Distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) produced in the US are predominately low fat, as the economics favor separating as much oil as possible for sale as renewable diesel feedstock and also for use in swine and poultry feed. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of feeding different amounts of low-fat DDGS (LF-DDGS) on the growth performance, growth efficiency, rumen fermentation, blood metabolites, and carcass characteristics of Kiko crossbred wether goats. Twenty-four goats, 5–6 months of age, were randomly assigned to one of the four experimental diets (n = 6/diet), 0%, 10%, 20%, and 30% LF-DDGS on an as-fed basis, and fed for 84 days. The data collected were analyzed using an orthogonal contrast test for equally spaced treatments. The average total gains, average daily gains, and gain-to-feed ratios were similar among the treatments (p > 0.05). The rumen acetate, propionate, and butyrate concentrations and the acetate:propionate ratios were similar (p > 0.05) among the treatments. There were no differences (p > 0.05) among the treatments for the dressing percentage, rib eye area, and backfat thickness. The findings suggest that at least up to 30% LF-DDGS can be included in the diets of castrated male goats without affecting the production performance and carcass characteristics.

Abstract:Forages fed to goats influence ruminal microbiota, and further contribute to affect growth performance, meat quality and its nutritional composition. Our objective for current study was to investigate the effects of different forages on growth performance, carcass traits, meat nutritional composition, rumen microflora, and the relationships between key bacteria and amino acids and fatty acids in the longissimus dorsi and semimembranosus muscles of goats. Boer crossbred goats were separately fed commercial concentrate diet supplemented with Hemarthria altissima (HA), Pennisetum sinese (PS), or forage maize (FG), and then slaughtered 90 days after the beginning of the experiment. Growth performances did not vary but carcass traits of dressing percentage, semi-eviscerated slaughter percentage, and eviscerated slaughter percentage displayed significant difference with the treatment studied. Meats from goats fed forage maize, especially semimembranosus muscles are rich in essential amino acids, as well as an increase in the amount of beneficial fatty acids. Our 16S rRNA gene sequencing results showed that the Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, and Proteobacteria were the most dominant phyla in all groups but different in relative abundance. Further, the taxonomic analysis and linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe) identified the specific taxa that were differentially represented among three forage treatments. The spearman's correlation analysis showed that rumen microbiota was significantly associated with the goat meat nutritional composition, and more significant positive correlations were identified in semimembranosus muscles when compared with longissimus dorsi muscles. More specifically, the lipid metabolism-related bacteria Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group showed positively correlated with meat amino acid profile, while genera Oscillospiraceae_UCG-005 were positively correlated with fatty acid composition. These bacteria genera might have the potential to improve nutritional value and meat quality. Collectively, our results showed that different forages alter the carcass traits, meat nutritional composition, and rumen microflora in fattening goats, and forage maize induced an improvement in its nutritional value.

Productive and Metabolic Increments of the Inclusion of Broussonetia Papyrifera to Replace Maize Silage in Growing Goats

Abstract:The study was conducted to investigate the effects of Broussonetia papyrifera (BP) on growth performance, rumen fermentation, digestion and meat quality in Huanghuai white goats. Diets were developed with increasing doses of BP to replace maize silage [0% (control), 15% (BP15), 30% (BP30) and 45% (BP45)]. The design was completely randomized with 4 groups of 10 animals each, totalizing 40 animals (aged 150 ± 10 days and body weight of 25.32 ± 0.52 kg). Final body weight, average daily gain and average daily feed intake increased (linear and quadratic, P < 0.05) as BP increased in the diet. The highest body weight and average daily gain were seen in the BP30 group. Feed conversion ratio also improved significantly (linear and quadratic, P < 0.05) with the increasing level of BP. Although the concentration of microbial protein (MCP) in a linear (P = 0.0028) and quadratic (P = 0.0035) fashion with increasing level of BP, however, NH3-N in a quadratic (P = 0.0841) fashion with increasing level of BP. Crude protein was increased with increasing BP in the diets (linear and quadratic, P < 0.05). Nitrogen intake, urinary excretion nitrogen and nitrogen retention were significantly improved (linear and quadratic, P < 0.05) with dietary BP addition in goats. Dietary BP supplementation increased pH (linear and quadratic, P < 0.05) and tended to reduce L* (lightness) (linear and quadratic, P < 0.05). Additionally, the redness value of meat was significantly improved by BP addition (linear and quadratic, P < 0.05). The inclusion of BP in the goat diet promotes growth and increases the digestibility of crude protein in addition to improving the meat colour and rumen fermentation.

Abstract:This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of exogenous fibrolytic enzymes (EFE) supplementation into diets with different non-fiber carbohydrates (NFC)/neutral detergent fiber (NDF) ratios on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, ruminal fermentation, and micro biome in Chinese domesticated Lezhi black goats. Treatments were 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of diets using low vs. high NFC/NDF ratios (1.06 or 1.66) and with or without EFE supplementation (0 or 0.4 g cellulase and xylanase/kg dry matter of diet). Sixty four Lezhi black goats (11 +/- 0.8 kg of live weight) were randomly assigned to the four treatments. High NFC/NDF ratio and EFE supplementation achieved greater average daily gain and improve feed conversion ratio (P < .05). The same treatments also significantly increased digestibility of organic matter (OM), acid detergent fiber (ADF) and NDF. In addition, the high NFC/NDF ratio diet, but not the EFE supplement, improved digestibility of crude protein (CP) and reduced ruminal pH (P < .001). Both high NFC/NDF ratio and EFE supplement decreased ruminal NH3-N concentrations significantly (P < .001), and increased the production of rumen total volatile fatty acids (VFA, P < .001), especially the molar proportion of propionate (P < .05). They reduced the molar proportion of acetate and thus the ratio of acetate to propionate (A: P) (P < .05). Both the high NFC/NDF ratio and the EFE supplement elevated the levels of microbial crude proteins (P < .01). Importantly, the combination of high NFC/NDF ratio and the EFE supplement diet raised the content of the microbial crude proteins to the highest levels among the 4 different treatment groups (P = .012). However, the high NFC/NDF ratio and the EFE supplementation had different impacts on fiber degrading activities. The high NFC/NDF ratio diet decreased, while EFE supplementation increased, the activities of cellulase and xylanase (P < .05). Among the three cellulytic bacteria detected (Ruminococcus albus, Ruminococcus flavefaciens, Fibrobacter succinogenes), only the abundance of Fibrobacter succinogenes was significantly decreased with the high NFC/NDF ratio (P = .004). These results illustrate that the diet with a high NFC/NDF ratio and EFE supplementation can improve ADG, feed conversion ratio and nutrient utilizationin Lezhi black goats. These improvements are likely attributed to the elevated production of microbial crude proteins and a shift in the molar proportions of VFA in the rumen, rather than increase of cellulolytic bacteria in the rumen microbiota.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of composite alkali-stored spent Hypsizygus marmoreus substrate (SHMS) on carcass quality, rumen fermentation, and rumen microbial diversity in goats. Twenty-four 6-month-old Chuanzhong black goats with similar body weights (20 ± 5 kg) were selected and randomly divided into four groups (n = 6 per group) and received four treatments: 0% (control group, CG); 20% (low-addition group, LG); 30% (moderate-addition group, MG); and 40% (high-addition group, HG) of SHMS-replaced silage corn and oat hay. The experiment lasted for 74 days (including a 14 d adaptation period and a 60 d treatment period). The results of this study showed that MG and HG significantly improved the marble score of goat meat (p < 0.05). The flesh color score significantly increased in each group (p < 0.05). The fat color scores significantly increased in LG and MG (p < 0.05). There were no significant effects on the pH value or shear force of the longissimus dorsi in each group (p > 0.05). The cooking loss in MG was higher than that in CG (p < 0.05). The histidine and tyrosine contents in each group of muscles significantly increased (p < 0.05), with no significant effect on fatty acids (p > 0.05). The rumen pH of MG significantly decreased (p < 0.05), while the total volatile fatty acids (TVFAs) and ammoniacal nitrogen (NH3-N) increased by 44.63% and 54.50%, respectively. The addition of the SHMS altered both the alpha and beta diversities of the rumen microbiota and significant differences in the composition and structure of the four microbial communities. The dominant bacterial phylum in each group were Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes, with Prevotella 1 as the dominant bacterial genus. Correlation analysis revealed that rumen bacteria are closely related to the animal carcass quality and rumen fermentation. In the PICRUSt prediction, 21 significantly different pathways were found, and the correlation network showed a positive correlation between the Prevotella 1 and 7 metabolic pathways, while the C5-branched dibasic acid metabolism was positively correlated with nine bacteria. In summary, feeding goats with an SHMS diet can improve the carcass quality, promote rumen fermentation, and alter the microbial structure. The research results can provide a scientific reference for the utilization of SHMS as feed in the goat industry.

Abstract:Abstract Cattle production within the US has and will continue to be negatively impacted by climate change. With the amount of natural resources and arable land decreasing every day, it is imperative to improve cattle production efficiency to meet the needs of the rapidly growing global population. Increasing the percentage of Bos indicus (BI) genetics within the US beef herd is one potential method of doing so, as BI cattle are better adapted to nutritional stress and increment weather when compared with Bos taurus (BT) cattle. Despite these positive attributes, BI cattle often have a more excitable temperament, exhibit decreased production performance, and have compromised carcass quality when compared with BT cattle. The objective of this study was to examine how breed type and genetic differences between BT and BT-BI crossbred cattle contribute to production performance, feeding behavior, and carcass quality in a temperate climate setting. This study utilized a total of 88 steers of two different breed types, Angus (AN; 100% BT) and Santa Gertrudis influenced (SG; 19% BI, 81% BT), and took place over 2 yr in 2020 (n = 23 AN and n = 9 SG) and 2021 (n = 35 AN and n = 21 SG). All steers were fed a typical feedlot ration, were housed in pens equipped with Vytelle units, and were harvested at a commercial facility once industry backfat standards were achieved. Statistical analysis was conducted using the Mixed Procedure of SAS with Tukey-Kramer adjustments. Production-related traits including dry matter intake (DMI), average daily gain (ADG), and feed efficiency (G:F) were not affected (P > 0.10) by breed type. Intramuscular fat was increased (P = 0.0003) in AN steers; however, other carcass traits including ribeye fat thickness, hot carcass weight (HCW), cold camera ribeye size, and cold camera yield grade were unaffected (P > 0.10) by breed type. Feeding behavior traits including the number and duration of bunk visits (BV) and feed bouts (FB) did not differ (P > 0.10) between breeds, but SG steers did spend more time with their heads down during such BV (P = 0.0047) and FB (P = 0.0078), respectively. To better examine the genomic differences between the two beef breeds, a Bovine GGP 100k assay was completed commercially and data were analyzed using models in SNP and Variation Suite. Following FDR corrections, SNPs with differences in allelic combinations that contributed to statistical significance were observed in ADG, DMI, HCW, marbling scores, and duration of BV and FB where the steers had their heads down. Potential breed effects were observed in marbling scores, cold camera yield grade, and cold camera ribeye size, however, due to the limited number of steers, additional research utilizing a larger population is warranted to validate such findings.

Abstract:Laiwu black goats comprise an excellent local germplasm resource; however, a shortage of feed resources has led to the application of unconventional feed. Ginger straw feed has good physiological effects, but research on this feed source for ruminant animals is lacking. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of enzymatic silage ginger straw on Laiwu black goat performance. The experiment used an independent sample t-test analysis method; 24 healthy Laiwu black goats with a body weight of 20.05 ± 1.15 kg and age of 5.67 ± 0.25 months were randomly divided into two groups with three replicates (bars) per group and four goats per replicate. The experimental diet was composed of mixed concentrate, silage, and garlic peel at a 2:7:1 ratio. The silage used in the two groups was whole corn silage (CON group) and 60% whole corn silage plus 40% enzymatic silage ginger straw (SG group), and the other components were identical. Daily feed intake/daily gain (F/G) was significantly higher in the SG group than in the CON group (p < 0.05), but there were no significant differences in dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and acid detergent fiber (ADF) digestibility between the groups. The shear force, cooking loss, centrifugal loss, and pressure loss of the longissimus dorsi muscle group were significantly lower in the SG than in the CON group (p < 0.05). Compared with those in the CON group, the serum and liver total antioxidant capacity was significantly increased in the SG group, and in the liver, the O2·-, malondialdehyde, and OH· contents were significantly decreased. Collectively, the rumen fluid microbial diversity was changed in the SG group. It was concluded that enzymatic silage ginger straw usage instead of 40% whole silage corn as feed for Laiwu black goats can significantly improve the muscle quality, antioxidant capacity, and intestinal flora, with no adverse effects on production performance. In conclusion, our study provides a basis for ginger straw processing and storage and its rational application in the Laiwu black goat diet.

Abstract:Meat quality is important in the meat-production chain. Conflicting reports of the effects of feeding systems on sheep growth performance and meat quality exist. By way of meta-analysis, we reviewed the literature on the growth and slaughter performance, and meat quality of lambs that grazed solely on pasture, those that grazed on pasture but received a dietary supplement, and those were exclusively fed indoors. The relevant literature comprised 28 papers, from which response variables of interest were obtained. Compared with stall-fed sheep, pasture-grazing led to significantly (p < 0.05) lower average daily gain, slaughter live weight, hot carcass weight, cold carcass weight, and similar dressing percentage, but pasture-grazed sheep fed a supplement had similar (p > 0.05) values for each of these attributes to stall-fed sheep. The quality of the longissimus muscle from lambs that grazed either exclusively on pasture or pasture with a supplement had significantly (p < 0.05) lower lightness and intramuscular fat content, and significantly (p < 0.05) higher yellowness, Warner-Bratzler shear force, and protein content than meat from stall-fed sheep. We conclude that sheep that have fed exclusively on pasture have lower carcass yield and meat edibility, but improved meat quality, and that pasture-fed sheep that received a supplement had comparable carcass attributes, but greater meat color and health quality than stall-fed sheep.

The Impact of Dietary Berberine Supplementation during the Transition Period on Blood Parameters, Antioxidant Indicators and Fatty Acids Profile in Colostrum and Milk of Dairy Goats

Abstract:The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of berberine (BBR) supplementation on productivity, antioxidant markers, and the fatty acid (FA) profile in the colostrum and milk of goats. Twenty-four primiparous Saanen goats were supplemented with 0, 1, 2, and 4 g/d (per goat) of BBR in control (CON), BBR1, BBR2, and BBR4 groups (n = 6 per group), respectively, from 21 days before expected kidding to 21 days after parturition. Blood sampling was carried out at -21, -14, -7, 0, 7, 14, and 21 d relative to delivery. Colostrum was collected within the first and second milking (d 1 of lactation), and milk was harvested weekly after kidding. Both BBR2 and BBR4 increased dry matter intake (DMI) (p ≤ 0.05) and energy balance (EB) as well as colostrum and milk production. Both BBR2 and BBR4 decreased (p ≤ 0.05) plasma levels of cholesterol, haptoglobin, and ceruloplasmin, while elevating the plasma albumin and paraoxonase (p ≤ 0.05), which may indicate that BBR mitigates inflammation during the transition period. BBR reduced (p ≤ 0.05) malondialdehyde (MDA) and increased (p ≤ 0.05) total antioxidant capacity (TAC), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and catalase (CAT) in blood, colostrum, and milk. Concentrations of de novo fatty acid in colostrum and milk were increased (p ≤ 0.05) with both BBR2 and BBR4. Free fatty acid (FFA) concentration in colostrum and milk fat were lower (p ≤ 0.05) in BBR2 and BBR4 compared to CON. The concentration of saturated fatty acids (SFAs) in colostrum and milk fat increased (p ≤ 0.05) with BBR2 and BBR4, while unsaturated fatty acids (USFAs) decreased (p ≤ 0.05) in milk. In summary, supplementation with at least 2 g/d BBR may enhance the EB and antioxidant status of dairy goats.

Abstract:This study aimed to determine the influence of body condition score (BCS) on the metabolic and reproductive status of adult female Kacang goats (Capra hircus). Twenty-three local doe goats aged 3–6 years, which were not pregnant and had BCS ranging from 1–3 on a scale of 1–5, were studied. Blood samples were collected before slaughtering for biochemical analyses. After the goats were killed, the ovaries were collected for follicle and corpus luteum (CL) examination. Ovarian follicular fluid was aspirated for biochemical analyses. Most blood biochemistry parameters of the goats with BCS 1–3 did not show significant differences (P>0.05). The ovaries with BCS 1 were acyclic; whereas the ovaries with BCSs 2 and 3 were cyclic. The ovarian follicular fluid concentrations of glucose, Ca, and Mg in the goats with BCS 1 were significantly lower than those of the goats with BCSs 2 and 3. The levels of TP, ALB, and cholesterol in the ovarian follicular fluid were significantly correlated with the blood results (P<0.05). In conclusion, Kacang goats with poor body conditions showed ovarian dysfunction. The levels of TP, ALB, and cholesterol in follicular fluid were related to the blood metabolite levels.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to evaluate the productive performance, carcass traits and meat quality under two rearing system of Jamuna basin lambs. Twenty selected lambs were divided into two treatments like T1 (grazing) and T2 (stall feeding) having ten lambs per treatment. Data was analyzed with unpaired t-test along with GLM procedure of SAS statistical packages. Traits evaluated were carcass traits, proximate components viz. dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE) and ash, physicochemical (Ultimate pH, cooked pH, cooking loss, drip loss, water holding capacity-WHC), sensory analysis (color, flavor, tenderness, juiciness, overall acceptability) and instrumental color value (L*, a* and b*). Average daily gain (ADG), hot carcass, skin, viscera, head, pluck, neck, heart, lung, and spleen wt. were found significantly differed (p<0.05) in both treatments. Dressing% and EE% was significantly (p<0.001) higher in grazing than stall feeding. Instrumental color values CIE L*, a* and b* were found significantly higher (p<0.001) in grazing. It may be concluded that grazing group had positive effects on ADG, carcass traits, proximate components, physicochemical, sensory evaluation and instrumental color value in Jamuna basin lamb.
The Effect of Dietary Supplementation with Resveratrol on Growth Performance, Carcass and Meat Quality, Blood Lipid Levels and Ruminal Microbiota in Fattening Goats

Abstract:This study investigated the effects of resveratrol (RES) supplementation on the growth performance, carcass and meat quality, blood lipid levels and ruminal bacterial microbiota of fattening goats. A total of forty castrated Nubian goats (28.25 ± 0.26 kg body weight) were randomly divided into four groups and provided with diets containing different levels of RES (0, 150, 300 and 600 mg/kg) for 120 d. The results showed that RES increased redness and intramuscular fat content, whilst reducing shear force in the longissimus dorsi muscle of goats (p < 0.05). In addition, the final weight, average daily gain, hot carcass weight, net meat weight, carcass lean percentage and eye muscle area of goats were significantly increased in the 150 mg/kg RES group compared with the other three groups, while those in the 600 mg/kg RES group significantly decreased (p < 0.05). RES significantly decreased serum triacylglycerol and LDL-C contents (p < 0.05), and increased HDL-C content and the HDL-C/TC ratio (p < 0.05). Supplementation with 150 mg/kg RES also increased the proportion of Acetitomaculum and Moryella, genera comprising short-chain fatty acid-producing bacteria. The present study indicated that an appropriate supplemental level of RES could improve the growth performance, neat percentage, meat quality, ruminal microbiota and serum lipid levels of fattening goats.

Abstract:The crude protein content of hybrid Broussonetia papyrifera silage (HBPS) is close to that of alfalfa hay. In the present study, we substituted alfalfa hay with HBPS in diets for Saanen dairy goats, and tested a possibility of using HBPS as a feedstuff to provide protein. Thirty male Saanen dairy goats (6-months old, body weight 18.85 ± 1.44 kg) were divided into three groups of 10, and randomly assigned to three diets: the control group (CN) fed the basal diet containing 600 g/kg (dry matter (DM) basis) of alfalfa hay, and the other two groups fed the diets with 33 % and 67 % of alfalfa hay being substituted with HBPS, so HBPS accounted for 198 g/kg (LB) and 402 g/kg (HB) of the diet respectively. The experiment lasted for 94 days. Compared with CN, feeding HBPS did not change feed intake, body weight gain, and the visceral organ coefficients (P > 0.05), but reduced the feed conversion ratio and the weight gain cost, particularly on the 198 g/kg HBPS diet (P < 0.05). Serum concentrations of total protein, albumin, and urea-nitrogen in both LB and HB groups and glucose in HB group decreased (P < 0.05), but their values remained within the normal range. Ammonia concentration in rumen fluid was reduced by feeding HBPS (P < 0.05). The serum activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) was increased and the concentration of malondialdehyde (MDA) decreased (P < 0.05) in both LB and HB groups (P < 0.05), and the SOD activity in longissimus dorsi muscle (LDM) was increased only for LB treatment (P 0.05). In conclusion, HBPS had similar effects to alfalfa hay on the growth performances, visceral organ development, and water holding capacity postmortem, but reduced the feed conversion ratio and the feed cost, and enhanced the antioxidant capacity of animals. Inclusion of 198 g/kg of HBPS in the diet would be a better choice for growing goats. Reduced ammonia concentration in the rumen, urea and protein concentrations in blood suggest dietary protein digestion in the gastrointestinal tract could be affected by feeding HBPS, which is worthy of further investigation.

Abstract:This study aimed to evaluate the impact of dietary energy and protein levels on the meat quality and metabolomic profile of Yunshang black goats. For this, 80 Yunshang black goats (male, 6 months old, with a mean live body weight of 35.82 ± 2.79 kg) were used in a completely randomized design with a 2 × 2 factorial dietary arrangement. The dietary treatments were (1) high energy (9.74 MJ/kg) with high protein (12.99%) (HEHP), (2) high energy (9.76 MJ/kg) with low protein (10.01%) (HELP), (3) low energy (8.18 MJ/kg) with high protein (13.04%) (LEHP), and (4) low energy (8.14 MJ/kg) with low protein (10.05%) (LELP). The experiment lasted 64 days, including 14 days for dietary adaptation and a 50-day feeding trial. At the end of the experiment, four animals from each treatment were slaughtered to assess their meat quality and metabolomic profiles. The pH value was greater for the goats fed the LELP diet compared with the other treatments. The LEHP-fed group's meat was brighter (L*) than that of the other three groups. The HEHP-fed group had considerably more tender meat (p < 0.05) compared with the LEHP-fed group. Moreover, 72 and 183 differentiated metabolites were detected in the longissimus muscle samples by using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, respectively. The hydropathy and volatilities of raw meat were different (p < 0.05), suggesting changes in the meat flavor because of the dietary treatments. Based on the results, it can be concluded that feeding a high-energy- and high-protein-containing diet improved the tenderness, flavor, and fatty acid contents of mutton.
Long-Term Feeding of Dairy Goats with 40% Artichoke by-Product Silage Preserves Milk Yield, Nutritional Composition and Animal Health Status

Abstract:The aim of this work is to study the effect of 40% inclusion of artichoke by-product silage (AB) in dairy goat diets on milk yield, composition and animal health status during a full lactation period compared to an isoenergetic and isoproteic mixed ration based on alfalfa hay and a cereal and legume mixture. Milk yield was not affected by the dietary treatments, and neither was body weight. AB treatment reduced whey protein (0.38 vs. 0.42%, p < 0.05) and milk urea concentrations (687 vs. 773 mg/L, respectively, p < 0.001), and did not affect total true protein (3.22 vs. 3.24% p > 0.05) or other macro-composition variables. AB treatment showed higher milk concentrations of Ca (p < 0.05), Mn (p < 0.01), Cu (p < 0.01) and Zn (p < 0.001) compared to the control group (C). Slight differences were observed in milk fatty acid profile without any negative effects (p > 0.05) on the blood cholesterol and glucose of goats. The AB group reduced blood urea due to its high dietary total phenol content. However, it had a positive effect on β-hydroxybutyrate (p < 0.05) and nonesterified fatty acids (p > 0.05). It was concluded that 40% artichoke by-product inclusion in dairy goat feed for the whole lactation period (23 weeks) is a sustainable solution, reducing feeding cost by 12.5% per kg of dry matter, contributing to a better circular economy without any negative repercussions on the productivity and health of Murciano-Granadina dairy goats.

Abstract:Objective: Jining Grey Goat is a local Chinese goat breed that is well known for its high fertility and excellent meat quality but shows low meat production performance. Numerous studies have focused on revealing the genetic mechanism of its high fertility, but its highlighting meat quality and muscle growth mechanism still need to be studied.Methods: In this research, an integrative analysis of the genomics and transcriptomics of Jining Grey goats compared with Boer goats was performed to identify candidate genes and pathways related to the mechanisms of meat quality and muscle development.Results: Our results overlap among five genes (ABHD2, FN1, PGM2L1, PRKAG3, RAVER2) and detected a set of candidate genes associated with fatty acid metabolism (PRKAG3, HADHB, FASN, ACADM), amino acid metabolism (KMT2C, PLOD3, NSD2, SETDB1, STT3B, MAN1A2, BCKDHB, NAT8L, P4HA3) and muscle development (MSTN, PPARGC1A, ANKRD2). Several pathways have also been detected, such as the FoxO signaling pathway and Apelin signaling pathway that play roles in lipid metabolism, lysine degradation, N-glycan biosynthesis, valine, leucine and isoleucine degradation that involving with amino acid metabolism.Conclusion: The comparative genomic and transcriptomic analysis of Jining Grey Goat and Boer Goat revealed the mechanisms underlying the meat quality and meat productive performance of goats. These results provide valuable information for future breeding in goats.

Abstract:Objective: This study aims to determine the intake, digestibility of nutriens and growth performance Kacang goats that were given complete feed in terms of sex differences, and castration treatment. Methods: The research took place in the experimental enclosure of the faculty of Agriculture, Timor University from Marh to October 2021. The livestock used were 15 young Kacang goats, which were divided into 3 treatment groups. The three livestock treatment groups were T1 (a group of castrated male Kacang goats), T2 (a group of young male Kacang goats without castration), and T3 (a group of young female Kacang goats). The three groups of goats were given a complete ration consisting of 30% corn straw + 20% gamal + 30% milled corn + 15% pollard bran + 5% rice bran. The variables observed included nutrien consumption and digestibility as well as livestock growth performance. Results: The results showed that the treatment had no significant effect (P>0,05) on the intake of DM, OM and CP; Likewise, the digestibility of DM and OM was relativeely the same, except for the digestibility of CP which showed a significant effect (P<0.05). Livestock growth performance was not much different between young castrated male Kacang goats, non-castrated goats and female goats. Conclusions: Castrated young Kacang goats, without castration and female Kacang goats given complete feed showed similar performance in terms of nutrien intake and digestibility, as well as daily body weight gain.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of body condition score (BCS) of cull cows on carcass characteristics, carcass-cutting yields, profitability, and tenderness development for the longissimus lumborum and psoas major muscles. During a 5-wk period (May-June 2023), 10 boner cull cows (BCS 4 to 6) and 10 leaner cull cows (BCS 1 to 3) were purchased at a commercial auction market. Live conformation, carcass characteristics, weights of fabricated cuts, tenderness, pH decline, and temperature decline were recorded following slaughter. Carcasses were fabricated into the following cuts: knuckle, inside round, outside round, eye of round, strip loin, top sirloin, bottom sirloin flap, tenderloin, flank, ribeye roll, chuck tender, and brisket, whereas lean was separated into lean and fat components. Beef processor returns for boner cows were calculated as the sum of USDA Carlot Report values for the subprimal cuts, trim, bone, and drop value subtracted by actual live costs at the auction market whereas beef processor returns for leaner cows were calculated as the sum of USDA Carlot Report values for the trim, bone, and drop value subtracted by actual live costs at the auction market. Carcass and merchandizing value parameters were analyzed using a completely randomized design with a fixed effect of classification (leaner or boner) and a random effect of slaughter day. Live weight was used as a covariant for all carcass and merchandizing value parameters due to the pronounced effect of live weight for most parameters. Temperature decline, pH decline, shear force, and cooking loss parameters were analyzed using a completely randomized design with a fixed effect of classification (leaner or boner) and a random effect of slaughter day. Boner cows were found to be heavier for both live and carcass weights when compared with leaner cows. In addition, backfat thickness was 0.39 cm greater (P = 0.03), and ribeye area was 9.17 cm2 (P = 0.05) greater for boner cows compared with leaner cows. This resulted in boner cows yielding larger subprimal cuts and a greater amount of lean trim, which in turn generated more beef processor revenue. However, specific consideration should be provided for profitability as the ability to market subprimal cuts is highly dependent on muscle size, fat deposition, meat quality, and market prices for both boner and leaner cows.
