Abstract:A photo/thermoresponsive ABC triblock copolymer-based ion gel exhibiting photoinduced structural transitions accompanied by significant rheological changes is newly developed. The ABC triblock copolymer comprises an ionic liquid (IL)-phobic A block, an IL-philic B block, and a photo/thermoresponsive C block containing azobenzene moieties. The IL-phobic A block forms a rigid micellar core in an IL over a wide temperature range and the photo/thermoresponsive C block undergoes upper critical solution temperature (UCST)-type phase transition in ILs. In concentrated polymer solution, the ABC triblock copolymer can form a percolated micellar network at low temperatures through aggregation of A and C blocks as physical crosslinks, bridged by IL-philic B blocks. In contrast, the ion gel undergoes structural transition to jammed micelles at high temperatures due to the disassembly of the thermoresponsive C block, resulting in significant softening of the ion gel. Importantly, the temperature dependences of the viscoelastic properties of the ion gel differ drastically depending on photo-irradiation conditions as the photoinduced isomerization of azobenzene moieties in the C block modulates the affinity between the polymer chain and IL. Utilizing this feature, photoinduced softening/hardening of the ion gel is realized at constant temperature. This study provides a promising strategy to control the rheological properties of nonvolatile soft materials via contactless light irradiation that could be exploited in various applications such as photoresponsive soft actuators and photo-healable soft materials.

Abstract:Fabrication strategies for photo-responsive ion gels have attracted attention owing to their precise spatial and temporal control with predetermined responses to light stimuli. In this work, a reversible light-driven method was introduced to devise photo-responsive ion gels by harnessing coumarin-based building blocks under 365 nm irradiation. A series of random copolymers composed of N, N-dimethylacrylamide (DMA) and 7-(2'-methacryloyloxyethoxy)-4-methylcoumarin (MAOEMC), namely P(DMA-r-MAOEMC), were synthesized through reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization with sufficient molecular weight (approximate to 100 kDa). The coumarin moieties in those polymers exhibited a reversible photo-induced dimerization and photo-cleavage behavior in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis (trifluommethylsufonyl) imide ([C(2)min][NTf2]). Those polymers - ionic liquid system at high polymer concentration (20 wt%) under suitable wavelength UV light irradiation led to sol-gel transition, which could be functionalized as photo-healable material and photocontrolled adhesion agents. Notably, the photo-controlled adhesiveness was reversible and can be mediated from 1.2 MPa to 0.2 MPa. This work opens new avenues to develop multifunctional ion gels using dynamic covalent bonds.

Abstract:ABSTRACTIn this study, we report the synthesis, characterization, and photo‐responsive properties of a new Y‐shaped amphiphilic azo triblock copolymer composed of two isotropic polyethylene glycol (PEG) blocks and an azobenzene liquid crystalline block. The azo block, with two ending groups suitable for the azo coupling reaction, is polymerized by atom transfer radical polymerization with a synthesized initiator containing two functional terminal groups. The macromolecular diazonium salts are prepared by the diazotization of PEG terminated with an amino group. The triblock copolymer is obtained by the azo coupling reaction between the azo block and macromolecular diazonium salts in DMF under mild condition. The intermediates and the obtained triblock copolymer are characterized by 1H NMR, FT‐IR, GPC, POM, DSC, TEM, and UV‐vis. The photoinduced isomerization behavior of the azo copolymer is investigated by UV‐vis. With the addition of water into the solution of the triblock copolymer, spherical aggregates with an average diameter of about 400 nm can be easily obtained. Synthesis and Self-Assembly Behavior of A Thermo-/Photo-Dual Responsive Triblock Copolymer

Abstract:A novel triblock copolymer containing azobenzene (AZO) and N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) was synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using a poly(ethylene oxide) bifunctional macroinitiator (Br-PEO-Br). The triblock copolymer was characterized by H-1 NMR and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Uniformly distributed polymeric micelles were obtained in aqueous solution by self-assembly method. Transmission electron microscope (TEM), fluorescence spectroscopy and dynamic light scattering (DLS) were used for the investigation of the self-assemblies and their stimuli-responsive behavior. Photoinduced release behavior was achieved with the as-prepared triblock copolymer micelles, which has not been observed in our previously-reported diblock copolymer micelles: the fluorescence intensity of Nile Red trapped in the triblock copolymer micelles dropped by approximately 40% after UV and Vis light alternative irradiation, indicating that a portion of the Nile Red was released to the aqueous media. Besides, the micelles shrank during the heating process.

Abstract:Novel, monodispersed, and well-defined ABA triblock copolymers [poly(dimethylamino ethyl methacrylate)-poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(dimethylamino ethyl methacrylate)] were synthesized by oxyanionic polymerization with potassium tert-butanoxide as the initiator. Gel permeation chromatography and H-1-NMR analysis showed that the obtained products were the desired copolymers with molecular weights close to calculated values. Because the poly(dimethylamino ethyl methacrylate) block was pH- and temperature-sensitive, the aqueous solution behavior of the polymers was investigated with H-1-NMR and dynamic light scattering techniques at different pH values and at different temperatures. Abstract:A novel amphiphilic ABA type triblock copolymer with well-defined glycopolymer segments was successfully synthesized via the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) technique, using a bromo-terminated difunctional polysulfone as macroinitiator. The difunctional polysulfone macroinitiator was prepared by esterifying the phenolic end groups of polysulfone to α-haloesters. This macroinitiator was then used to initiate the polymerization of a glucose-carrying monomer, 3-O-methacryloyl-1,2:5,6-di-O-isopropylidene-D-glucofuranose (MAIpG), resulting an ABA type triblock copolymer. After acidolysis treatment, the isopropylidenyl groups of the protected sugar residues were removed, thus the amphiphilic ABA type triblock copolymer with well-defined glycopolymer segments was obtained. The polymers obtained were identified by FT-IR, 1H-NMR, GPC, and TGA. The self-assembly behavior of the amphiphilic glycopolymer in selective solvent (e.g. DMF/H2O) system was also preliminarily explored. The resultant amphiphilic glycopolymer shows potential applications in the fields of controlled release and delivery of drugs, micro-reactors, nano-materials, medical devices, and so on.
Diblock copolymers composed of a liquid crystalline azo block and a poly(dimethylsiloxane) block: synthesis, morphology and photoresponsive properties

Abstract:A series of diblock copolymers, composed of a soft poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) block with a defined length and a liquid crystalline poly(6-(4-(4'-cyanophenylazo) phenoxy) hexyl acrylate) (POCN) block with different lengths, was synthesized by the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). A homopolymer POCN was also prepared by the same method for comparison. The polymer structures, liquid crystalline phase, microphase-separated morphology, and photoisomerization were then investigated by H-1 NMR, FT-IR, GPC, UV-Vis, POM, DSC, XRD and TEM. The results showed that the well-defined diblock copolymers (PDMSn-b-POCNm) possess four different soft/rigid ratios (n = 58, m = 8, 15, 24, 36) and relatively narrow molecular distributions (PDI <= 1.30). POCN blocks of the copolymers form a smectic-A sub-phase, which is identical to the mesomorphic behaviour of POCN. After being annealed at 140 degrees C in a vacuum for 24 h, the copolymers form a lamellar morphology when WPDMS is 42.3-57.8% and a morphology of PDMS spheres embedded in an azo matrix when WPDMS is 23.3-31.4%. POCN and PDMSn-b-POCNm in solution show typical photoisomerization behaviour of the azobenzene moieties. Although H-aggregation is observed to a certain extent, photochemical processes of the as-cast films of the polymers are similar to those of the solutions. On the other hand, the photoisomerization behaviour of annealed PDMSn-b-POCNm films is significantly different from that of the annealed POCN film, which is closely correlated with the phase-separated morphologies. The observations can provide deep understanding of the phase-separated structures and be used to develop new materials.

Abstract:Symmetric tri-block copolymer as P(DMAEMA-co-CuA)-b-PDMS-b-P(DMAEMA-co-CuA) was synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) in which PDMS was used as bis-functionalized initiator. Moreover, PDMAEMA as multi-responsive hydrophilic segment was copolymerized with coumarin moieties as photocrosslinking agent. Variation of the ratio of hydrophilic/hydrophobic segments in block copolymers was resulted in different morphologies including snowman-like, hollow, spherical, and cubic structures where the morphology was affected by pH of media. The size of self-assembled tri-block copolymers was changed toward external stimuli including temperature, CO2 bubbling, and pH due to multi-responsivity of PDMAEMA block. The presence of photoactive coumarin molecules in hydrophilic PDMAEMA block was utilized for stabilizing the morphology in the self-assembled particles upon UV light irradiation (365 nm). Photocrosslinking of self-assembled particles by UV light-induced dimerization of coumarin molecules via [2π + 2π] cycloaddition reaction was investigated by spectroscopy and microscopy methods, and results indicated that morphology of the particles was stabilized after photocrosslinking. Also, the rate of coumarin dimerization was affected by its concentration, and size and morphology of the particles. According to the advantages of developed self-assembly system considering various UV-crosslinkable morphologies and multi-responsiveness, these structures have potential application in drug delivery systems for controlled release of doxorubicin (DOX).

Abstract:A new class of liquid-crystalline (LC) homopolymers of poly{11-[4-(3-ethoxycarbonyl-coumarin-7-oxy)-carbonylphenyloxy]-undecyl methacrylate} containing a coumarin moiety as a photocrosslinkable unit with various polymerization degrees and their LC-coil diblock and LC-coil-LC triblock copolymers with polystyrene as the coil segment was synthesized with the atom transfer radical polymerization method. All the homopolymers and block copolymers synthesized here exhibited narrow polydispersities, indicating well-controlled living polymerization. Differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy, and wide-angle X-ray diffraction confirmed that all the homopolymers and block copolymers exhibit a monolayer smectic A phase. Coumarin moieties in the polymers can be photodimerized under λ > 300 nm light irradiation to yield crosslinked network structures, which improve the thermal stability of a polymer nanostructure because of microphase separation. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:Photo-cross-linked hydrogels from thermoresponsive polymers can be used as advanced injectable biomaterials via a combination of physical interaction (in situ thermal gelation) and covalent cross-links (in situ photopolymerization). This can lead to gets with significantly enhanced mechanical properties compared to non-photo-crosslinked thermoresponsive hydrogels. Moreover, the thermally phase-separated gels have attractive advantages over non-thermoresponsive gels because thermal gelation upon injection allows easy handling and holds the shape of the gels prior to photopolymerization. In this study, water-soluble thermoresponsive copolymers containing multiple methacrylate groups were synthesized via one-step deactivation enhanced atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMEMA, M(n) = 475), poly(propylene glycol) methacrylate (PPGMA, M(n) = 375), and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) and were used to form covalent cross-linked hydrogels by photopolymerization. The cross-linking density was found to have a significant influence on the mechanical and swelling properties of the photo-cross-linked gels. Release studies using lysozyme as a model protein demonstrated a sustained release profile that varied dependent on the copolymer composition, cross-linking density, and the temperature. Mouse C2C12 myoblast cells were cultured in the presence of the copolymers at concentrations up to 1 mg/mL. It was found that the majority of the cells remained viable, as assessed by Alamar Blue, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and Live/Dead cell viability/cytotoxicity assays. These studies demonstrate that thermoresponsive PEGMEMA-PPGMA-EGDMA copolymers offer potential as in situ photopolyimerizable materials for tissue engineering and drug delivery applications through a combination of facile synthesis, enhanced mechanical properties, tunable cross-linking density, low cytotoxicity, and accessible functionality for further structure modifications.
Azobenzene-Containing Liquid Crystal Triblock Copolymers: Synthesis, Characterization, and Self-Assembly Behavior

Abstract:A series of azobenzene-containing isotropic/nematic/isotropic liquid crystal (LC) triblock copolymers (PBMA-b-PMAazo444-b-PBMA) with different block ratios was synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The central block PMAazo444 is an azobenzene-containing side-on nematic liquid crystalline polymer and PBMA a coil polymer. These azo-triblock copolymers were prepared and studied with the aim of producing, in the future, photoresponsive elastomers with lamellar structure. Kinetic Studies on the polymerization of the azobenzene-containing LC monomer demonstrate that its polymerization is a controlled process. A LC homopolymer with narrow molecular weight distribution (M-w/M-n = 1. 13) was used as a difunctional macroinitiator to prepare the triblock copolymers by ATRP. The triblock copolymers were characterized by NMR, SEC, DSC, and POM. A triblock copolymer with 47 wt % of LC part self-assembles into a lamellar phase as evidenced both by SAXS and by TEM. The surface alignment of this lamellar phase on a silicon substrate was studied by AFM and compared with its nonphotosensitive triblock homologue (PBA-b-PA444-b-PBA). For this nonphotosensitive triblock copolymer the lamellas aligned parallel to the substrate, while for the azobenzene-containing triblock copolymer they organized perpendicular to the substrate.
Quick and Efficient Thermal Stability Enhancement of Micro‐Phase Separated Structure Formed from ABA Triblock Copolymers by Photo Cross‐Linking Approach

Abstract:We here report quick and efficient enhancement of the thermal stability of triblock copolymer‐based bulk morphologies by utilizing photo cross‐linking, which aims for widening the application range of block copolymer‐based materials. First, we synthesized ABA triblock copolymer bearing photo cross‐linkable groups (i. e., benzophenone groups) in the end blocks via two step atom transfer radical polymerizations (ATRP) and subsequent esterification reaction. UV‐light was irradiated for the annealed bulk films at room temperature, and the photo cross‐linking completely progressed within several minutes. Small angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) and the model fitting analysis revealed that the original cylinder morphology of the neat sample was nicely preserved after the photo cross‐linking, which enables investigation of intrinsic effects of domain cross‐linking. The temperature ramp SAXS measurements demonstrated the photo cross‐linked cylinder structure remained up to the temperature (∼320 °C) much higher than the disordering temperature (∼240 °C) of the neat uncross‐linked structure.

Thermoresponsive Star Triblock Copolymers by Combination of Rop and Atrp: from Micelles to Hydrogels

Abstract:Novel biocompatible, biodegradable, four-arm star, triblock copolymers containing a hydrophobic poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) segment, a hydrophilic poly(oligo(ethylene oxide) 475 methacrylate) (POEOMA475) segment and a thermoresponsive poly(di(ethylene oxide) methyl ether methacrylate) (PMEO(2)MA) segment were synthesized by a combination of controlled ring-opening polymerization (ROP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). First, a four-arm PCL macroinitiator [(PCL-Br)(4)] for ATRP was synthesized by the ROP of epsilon-caprolactone (CL) catalyzed by stannous octoate in the presence of pentaerythritol as the tetrafunctional initiator followed by esterification with 2-bromoisobutyryl bromide. Then, sequential ATRP of oligo(ethylene oxide) methacrylate (OEOMA475, M-n = 475) and di(ethylene oxide) methyl ether methacrylate) (MEO(2)MA) were carried out using the (PCL-Br)(4) tetrafunctional macroinitiator, in different sequence, resulting in preparation of (PCL-b-POEOMA475-b-PMEO(2)MA)(4) and (PCL-b-PMEO(2)MA-b-POEOMA475)(4) star triblock copolymers. These amphiphilic copolymers can self-assemble into spherical micelles in aqueous solution at room temperature. The thermal responses of the polymeric micelles were investigated by dynamic light scattering and ultraviolet spectrometer. The properties of the two series of copolymers are quite different and depend on the sequence distribution of each block along the arms of the star. The (PCL-b-POEOMA475-b-PMEO(2)MA)(4) star copolymer, with the thermoresponsive PMEO(2)MA segment on the periphery, can undergo reversible sol-gel transitions between room temperature (22 degrees C) and human body temperature (37 degrees C). Abstract:ABA-type amphiphilic triblock copolymers composed of poly(ethylene glycol)s (PEGs) with different number-average molecular weights as the hydrophilic blocks (B) and poly {6-[4-(4-ethoxyphenylazo)phenoxy]hexyl methacrylate} (PA6C) as the hydrophobic blocks (A) were prepared via atom transfer radical polymerization. These copolymers were prepared from bromo-terminated macroinitiators based on PEG6000, PEG2000, and PEG600, with CuBr/N,N,N',N ",N "-pentamethyldiethylene-triamine as the catalytic system, at 85 degrees C in anisole. The block copolymers were characterized with H-1 NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements were performed to reveal the phase segregation. In contrast to those polymers with similar compositions and structures in previous reports, these amphiphilic copolymers exhibited unusual liquid-crystalline properties over a wide temperature range, being stable even at room temperature. Photoresponsive Carbodiimide-Fueled Transiently Crosslinked Polymer Hydrogels

Abstract:Light- and carbodiimide-responsive hydrogels were synthesized. An “AND” gate was developed using ortho-nitrobenzyl (ONB) protected carboxylic acids in the polymer backbone. Crosslinking was only realized in the presence of both UV stimulus to photocleave the ONB group and carbodiimide fuels to induce anhydride bonds. In the presence of water, the anhydride bonds eventually hydrolyze to carboxylic acids and the system returns to the solution state. The mechanical properties of the out-of-equilibrium hydrogels were investigated using oscillatory rheology to examine the effects of deprotection efficiency, carbodiimide concentration and chain architecture on the hydrogels’ moduli and decrosslinking time. Higher moduli and longer decrosslinking times were found with increased carbodiimide concentration and deprotection efficiency. These discoveries unveil new possibilities for photoresponsive chemically fueled soft materials.

Abstract:Lamellar and hexagonal-coil-cylinder self-assembled structures of ABA type triblock copolymers containing mesogen-jacketed liquid crystalline polymer (MJLCP) as the rod block, and polyisobutylene (PIB) as the coil middle block were discovered. PIB was synthesized by living cationic polymerization of isobutylene initiated by 1,4-bis(2-chloro-2-propyl) benzene (p-DCC), and then a small amount of styrene was introduced at the end of the PIB chains to form the difunctional PIB macroinitiator with -CH2CH(C6H5)Cl end groups for further atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). 2,5-Bis[(4-methoxyphenyl) oxycarbonyl] styrene (MPCS) was block-copolymerized from the difunctional PIB macroinitiators at 110 degrees C. The molecular characterization of the triblock copolymers was performed with H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Their phase structures and transitions were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and polarized optical microscopy experiments. It was demonstrated that the triblock copolymers formed lamellar structures at moderate rod fractions and hexagonal coil cylinders in the rod matrix at high rod fractions. The d-spacing of the microphase-separated structures was influenced by the liquid crystalline phase of rod-like PMPCS blocks.

Abstract:Photoresponsive block copolymers (PRBCs) containing azobenzenes and other chromophores can be easily prepared by controlled polymerization. Their photoresponsive behaviors are generally based on photoisomerization, photocrosslinking, photoalignment and photoinduced cooperative motions. When the photoactive block forms mesogenic phases upon microphase separation of PRBCs, supramolecular cooperative motion in liquid-crystalline PRBCs enables them to self-organize into hierarchical structures with photoresponsive features. This offers novel opportunities to photocontrol microphase-separated nanostructures of well-defined PRBCs and extends their diverse applications in holograms, nanotemplates, photodeformed devices and microporous films.
Synthesis of dual‐functional copolymer with orthogonally photosensitive groups

Abstract:A dual-functional copolymer, poly(4-styrenesulfonyl azide-co-t-butyl-methacrylate), with built-in photoacid labile and photocrosslinkable components was designed and synthesized by radical copolymerization. The mixture of copolymer and photoacid generators was spin coated on aminosilane treated Si wafers and polycarbonate (PC). When exposed to 365 nm UV light, photoacids were generated, which decomposed the acid labile groups, t-butyl- ester, to carboxylic acid in the exposed region, leading to drastic change of wettability from hydrophobic to hydrophilic after devel- oping the film in an aqueous base solution. The patterned polymer film could be subsequently photoimmobilized on the substrate under 254 nm deep UV exposure through CAH insertion via exited azide groups. 1 H-NMR and Fourier transform infrared spectra con- firmed the synthesis of the copolymer, and the photodecomposi- tion and photografting reactions occurred orthogonally at 365 and 254 nm, respectively, without interfering each other. On the pat- terned surfaces, including a hexagonal dot array and a gradient line array, we demonstrated selective wetting in the 365 nm exposed regions. On the gradient line array, we showed an inter- esting ratchet wetting pattern. Abstract:A novel, near-monodisperse, well-defined ABA triblock copolymer, poly[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate]-b-poly(propylene oxide)-b-poly[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate], was synthesized via oxyanion-initiated polymerization. The initiator was a telechelic-type potassium alcoholate prepared from poly(propylene glycol) and KH in dry tetrahydrofuran. The copolymers produced were characterized by Fourier transform infrared, H-1 NMR, and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). GPC and H-1 NMR analyses showed that the products obtained were the desired copolymers, with narrow molecular weight distributions (ca. 1.09-1.11) very close to that of the original poly(propylene glycol). H-1 NMR, surface tension measurements, and dynamic light scattering all indicated that the triblock copolymer led to interesting aqueous solution behaviors, including temperature-induced micellization and very high surface activity.
