Abstract:Audio data is a highly rich form of information, often containing patterns with unique acoustic signatures. In pervasive sensing environments, because of the empowered smart devices, we have witnessed an increasing research interest in sound sensing to detect ambient environment, recognise users’ daily activities, and infer their health conditions. However, the main challenge is that the real-world environment often contains multiple sound sources, which can significantly compromise the robustness of the above environment, event, and activity detection applications. In this paper, we explore different approaches in multi-sound classification, and propose a stacked classifier based on the recent advance in deep learning. We evaluate our proposed approach in a comprehensive set of experiments on both sound effect and real-world datasets. The results have demonstrated that our approach can robustly identify each sound category among mixed acoustic signals, without the need of any a priori knowledge about the number and signature of sounds in the mixed signals.

Abstract:The number of publications on acoustic scene classification (ASC) in environmental audio recordings has constantly increased over the last few years. This was mainly stimulated by the annual Detection and Classification of Acoustic Scenes and Events (DCASE) competition with its first edition in 2013. All competitions so far involved one or multiple ASC tasks. With a focus on deep learning based ASC algorithms, this article summarizes and groups existing approaches for data preparation, i.e., feature representations, feature pre-processing, and data augmentation, and for data modeling, i.e., neural network architectures and learning paradigms. Finally, the paper discusses current algorithmic limitations and open challenges in order to preview possible future developments towards the real-life application of ASC systems.

ACES: Evaluating Automated Audio Captioning Models on the Semantics of Sounds

Abstract:Automated Audio Captioning is a multimodal task that aims to convert audio content into natural language. The assessment of audio captioning systems is typically based on quantitative metrics applied to text data. Previous studies have employed metrics derived from machine translation and image captioning to evaluate the quality of generated audio captions. Drawing inspiration from auditory cognitive neuroscience research, we introduce a novel metric approach -- Audio Captioning Evaluation on Semantics of Sound (ACES). ACES takes into account how human listeners parse semantic information from sounds, providing a novel and comprehensive evaluation perspective for automated audio captioning systems. ACES combines semantic similarities and semantic entity labeling. ACES outperforms similar automated audio captioning metrics on the Clotho-Eval FENSE benchmark in two evaluation categories.

Abstract:A classification scheme of a scientific subject gives an overview of its body of knowledge. It can also be used to facilitate access to research articles and other materials related to the subject. For example, the ACM Computing Classification System (CCS) is used in the ACM Digital Library search interface and also for indexing computer science papers. We observed that a comprehensive classification system like CCS or Mathematics Subject Classification (MSC) does not exist for Computational Linguistics (CL) and Natural Language Processing (NLP). We propose a classification scheme -- CLICKER for CL/NLP based on the analysis of online lectures from 77 university courses on this subject. The currently proposed taxonomy includes 334 topics and focuses on educational aspects of CL/NLP; it is based primarily, but not exclusively, on lecture notes from NLP courses. We discuss how such a taxonomy can help in various real-world applications, including tutoring platforms, resource retrieval, resource recommendation, prerequisite chain learning, and survey generation.
The Edinburgh International Accents of English Corpus: Towards the Democratization of English ASR

Abstract:English is the most widely spoken language in the world, used daily by millions of people as a first or second language in many different contexts. As a result, there are many varieties of English. Although the great many advances in English automatic speech recognition (ASR) over the past decades, results are usually reported based on test datasets which fail to represent the diversity of English as spoken today around the globe. We present the first release of The Edinburgh International Accents of English Corpus (EdAcc). This dataset attempts to better represent the wide diversity of English, encompassing almost 40 hours of dyadic video call conversations between friends. Unlike other datasets, EdAcc includes a wide range of first and second-language varieties of English and a linguistic background profile of each speaker. Results on latest public, and commercial models show that EdAcc highlights shortcomings of current English ASR models. The best performing model, trained on 680 thousand hours of transcribed data, obtains an average of 19.7% word error rate (WER) -- in contrast to the 2.7% WER obtained when evaluated on US English clean read speech. Across all models, we observe a drop in performance on Indian, Jamaican, and Nigerian English speakers. A quest through interconnected datasets: lessons from highly-cited ICASSP papers

Abstract:As audio machine learning outcomes are deployed in societally impactful applications, it is important to have a sense of the quality and origins of the data used. Noticing that being explicit about this sense is not trivially rewarded in academic publishing in applied machine learning domains, and neither is included in typical applied machine learning curricula, we present a study into dataset usage connected to the top-5 cited papers at the International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing (ICASSP). In this, we conduct thorough depth-first analyses towards origins of used datasets, often leading to searches that had to go beyond what was reported in official papers, and ending into unclear or entangled origins. Especially in the current pull towards larger, and possibly generative AI models, awareness of the need for accountability on data provenance is increasing. With this, we call on the community to not only focus on engineering larger models, but create more room and reward for explicitizing the foundations on which such models should be built.

Abstract:The electroencephalogram (EEG) provides a non-invasive, minimally restrictive, and relatively low-cost measure of mesoscale brain dynamics with high temporal resolution. Although signals recorded in parallel by multiple, near-adjacent EEG scalp electrode channels are highly-correlated and combine signals from many different sources, biological and non-biological, independent component analysis (ICA) has been shown to isolate the various source generator processes underlying those recordings. Independent components (IC) found by ICA decomposition can be manually inspected, selected, and interpreted, but doing so requires both time and practice as ICs have no order or intrinsic interpretations and therefore require further study of their properties. Alternatively, sufficiently-accurate automated IC classifiers can be used to classify ICs into broad source categories, speeding the analysis of EEG studies with many subjects and enabling the use of ICA decomposition in near-real-time applications. While many such classifiers have been proposed recently, this work presents the ICLabel project comprised of (1) the ICLabel dataset containing spatiotemporal measures for over 200,000 ICs from more than 6000 EEG recordings and matching component labels for over 6000 of those ICs, all using common average reference, (2) the ICLabel website for collecting crowdsourced IC labels and educating EEG researchers and practitioners about IC interpretation, and (3) the automated ICLabel classifier, freely available for MATLAB. The ICLabel classifier improves upon existing methods in two ways: by improving the accuracy of the computed label estimates and by enhancing its computational efficiency. The classifier outperforms or performs comparably to the previous best publicly available automated IC component classification method for all measured IC categories while computing those labels ten times faster than that classifier as shown by a systematic comparison against other publicly available EEG IC classifiers.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose SemanticAC, a semantics-assisted framework for Audio Classification to better leverage the semantic information. Unlike conventional audio classification methods that treat class labels as discrete vectors, we employ a language model to extract abundant semantics from labels and optimize the semantic consistency between audio signals and their labels. We verify that simple textual information from labels and advanced pretraining models enable more abundant semantic supervision for better performance. Specifically, we design a text encoder to capture the semantic information from the text extension of labels. Then we map the audio signals to align with the semantics of corresponding class labels via an audio encoder and a similarity calculation module so as to enforce the semantic consistency. Extensive experiments on two audio datasets, ESC-50 and US8K demonstrate that our proposed method consistently outperforms the compared audio classification methods.

Abstract:This work is a preliminary exploratory study of how we could progress a step towards an AI assisted article classification sys- tem in academia. The proposed system aims to aid the journal editors in their decisions by pinpointing the potential weaknesses or strengths of a submitted manuscript. From a large collection of articles and corresponding author-editor interactions we explore the possible reasons that lead to a paper being not forwarded for review. Our investigation reveals that in most cases either it is be- cause the prospective manuscript is out of scope of the journal or the manuscript does not satisfy the minimum quality requirements to maintain the standard of the journal. We extract several features to quantify the quality of a paper and the degree of in-scope explor- ing keyword search, citation analysis, reputations of authors and affiliations, similarity with respect to accepted papers. With these features we train standard machine learning classifiers to develop a classification system. On a decent set of test data our approach yields promising results across 3 different journals. We believe that our approach is generic and could be adapted to other journals with appropriate adjustments.

Abstract:This paper introduces briefly the history and growth of the Detection and Classification of Acoustic Scenes and Events (DCASE) challenge, workshop, research area and research community. Created in 2013 as a data evaluation challenge, DCASE has become a major research topic in the Audio and Acoustic Signal Processing area. Its success comes from a combination of factors: the challenge offers a large variety of tasks that are renewed each year; and the workshop offers a channel for dissemination of related work, engaging a young and dynamic community. At the same time, DCASE faces its own challenges, growing and expanding to different areas. One of the core principles of DCASE is open science and reproducibility: publicly available datasets, baseline systems, technical reports and workshop publications. While the DCASE challenge and workshop are independent of IEEE SPS, the challenge receives annual endorsement from the AASP TC, and the DCASE community contributes significantly to the ICASSP flagship conference and the success of SPS in many of its activities.

Robust Deep Learning Frameworks for Acoustic Scene and Respiratory Sound Classification

Abstract:This thesis focuses on dealing with the task of acoustic scene classification (ASC), and then applied the techniques developed for ASC to a real-life application of detecting respiratory disease. To deal with ASC challenges, this thesis addresses three main factors that directly affect the performance of an ASC system. Firstly, this thesis explores input features by making use of multiple spectrograms (log-mel, Gamma, and CQT) for low-level feature extraction to tackle the issue of insufficiently discriminative or descriptive input features. Next, a novel Encoder network architecture is introduced. The Encoder firstly transforms each low-level spectrogram into high-level intermediate features, or embeddings, and thus combines these high-level features to form a very distinct composite feature. The composite or combined feature is then explored in terms of classification performance, with different Decoders such as Random Forest (RF), Multilayer Perception (MLP), and Mixture of Experts (MoE). By using this Encoder-Decoder framework, it helps to reduce the computation cost of the reference process in ASC systems which make use of multiple spectrogram inputs. Since the proposed techniques applied for general ASC tasks were shown to be highly effective, this inspired an application to a specific real-life application. This was namely the 2017 Internal Conference on Biomedical Health Informatics (ICBHI) respiratory sound dataset. Building upon the proposed ASC framework, the ICBHI tasks were tackled with a deep learning framework, and the resulting system shown to be capable at detecting respiratory anomaly cycles and diseases.
