Abstract:A recently emerged reversible shape memory effect greatly extends the capability of shape memory polymers and their practical potential. Physical confinement and chemical fixation are individually known to be effective in introducing network anisotropy essential for reversible shape memory. Herein, we demonstrate that synergetic combination of these two mechanisms effectively diversifies the shape-shifting behavior. Specifically, we introduce a transesterification catalyst into a network containing two crystalline phases: poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and poly(ω-pentadecalactone) (PPDL). The reversible shape memory behavior of the resulting system can be programmed via the physical confinement by the PPDL phase and the chemical plasticity by the dynamic ester exchange. We illustrate that the two programming mechanisms can operate in a noninterfering way that allows achieving a synergetic benefit, notably realizing a zero-set reversible shape memory behavior. Our study points to a direction in diversifying the behaviors of reversible shape memory polymers and expands the scope for potential engineering devices.

Abstract:Stimuli-responsive materials with sophisticated yet controllable shape-changing behaviors are highly desirable for real-world device applications. Among various shape-changing materials, the elastic nature of shape memory polymers allows fixation of temporary shapes that can recover on demand, whereas polymers with exchangeable bonds can undergo permanent shape change via plasticity. We integrate the elasticity and plasticity into a single polymer network. Rational molecular design allows these two opposite behaviors to be realized at different temperature ranges without any overlap. By exploring the cumulative nature of the plasticity, we demonstrate easy manipulation of highly complex shapes that is otherwise extremely challenging. The dynamic shape-changing behavior paves a new way for fabricating geometrically complex multifunctional devices.
Spatio-temporal Programmable Supramolecular Shape Memory Polymer

Abstract:Owing to the dynamic nature and the rich library of supramolecular interactions, supramolecular shape memory polymers have shown unique benefits beyond traditional thermoset shape memory polymers including multi-stimuli response, self-healing, recyclability, and solid-state plasticity. Thanks to extensive research over the last two decades, the above characteristics have become well-established. Despite that, new material design opportunities beyond those continue to emerge in the recent five years. In particular, supramolecular shape memory polymer has been reported to possess unusually high output energy density via strain-induced formation of ordered supramolecular structures, which are beneficial for use as artificial muscles. In addition, the hydrophobic domain in a hydrogel has been demonstrated to be effective in fixing the anisotropy of the poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) chains, giving rise to two-way reversible shape memory behavior in hydrogels. Intriguingly, the change in glassy transition temperature due to photo-isomerization of azobenzene moieties leads to athermal shape memory polymers for which no heating/cooling is required for the entire shape memory cycle. Rational design of a shape memory network with self-complementary hydrogen bonding interactions endows the material with superior toughness and multi-recyclability. Collectively, these recent progresses have expanded the scope of shape memory polymers, which are summarized in the first half of this article. The above developments typically take advantage of the on-off switch offered by supramolecular interactions, but their dynamic reorganization process has been by and large neglected. Several reports in the last three years have shown that this latter characteristic is uniquely useful in designing autonomous shape memory polymers for which no external stimulation is needed to trigger the shape recovery. These supramolecular autonomous shape memory polymers are discussed in the second half of this article. This class of materials utilize the time- and temperature-dependent exchange kinetics of supramolecular interactions to manipulate the entropic energy stored via spatio-temporal programming, as a way to control the shape-shifting. This autonomous shape-shifting mode differs drastically from traditional stimuli-responsive shape memory polymers and its trigger-free nature can open up new device applications in which access to external stimulation is difficult. We believe that the principle of spatio-temporal programming via supramolecular interactions can be potentially expanded to other molecular mechanisms, which will provide a new perspective for smart material design in the future. Abstract:Solid-state plasticity by dynamic covalent bond exchange in a shape-memory polymer network bestows a permanent shape reconfiguration ability. Spatio-selective control of thermally induced plasticity may further extend the capabilities of materials into unexplored domains. However, this is difficult to achieve because of the lack of spatio-control in typical polymer network synthesis. Metal-ligand interactions possess the high strength of covalent bonds while maintaining the dynamic reversibility of supramolecular bonds. Metallosupramolecular shape-memory polymer networks were designed and prepared, which demonstrated solid-state plasticity. The metallo-coordination bonds within these networks permit facile tuning of the plasticity behavior across a wide temperature range, simply by changing the metal ion. By controlling the diffusion of two different metal ions during preparation of a polymer film, a plasticity behavior with a spatial gradient was achieved, providing a unique shape-morphing versatility with potential in shape-memory devices.

Abstract:The unique capability of topological rearrangement for dynamic covalent polymer networks has enabled various unusual properties (self-healing, solid-state plasticity, and reprocessability) that are not found in conventional thermosets. Achieving these properties in one network in a synergetic fashion can open up new opportunities for shape memory polymer. To accomplish such a goal, the freedom to tune topological rearrangement kinetics is critical. This is, however, challenging to achieve. In this work, two sets of dynamic bonds (urethane and hindered urea) are incorporated into a hybrid network for synthesizing shape memory poly(urea-urethane). By changing the bond ratio, networks with highly tunable topological rearrangement kinetics are obtained. Combining self-healing, solid-state plasticity, and reprocessability in one such shape memory network leads to unusual versatility in its shape-shifting performance.

Abstract:Most shape memory polymers are rigid and exhibit only one way (irreversible) shape memory effect. This work explored the two-way (reversible) shape memory effect for semi-crystalline elastomeric networks. These semi-crystalline networks with various gel fractions and crosslinking densities were synthesized via radical initiated crosslinking of poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate). The thermal, mechanical, and the two-way shape memory properties of the resulting materials were investigated. The critical impact of the gel fraction on the two-way shape memory behaviors was revealed. The results from this study establish the basis for potential applications involving soft reversible actuation.

Abstract:The use of shape memory polymers is demonstrated for deformable, programmable, and shape-memorizing micro-optical devices. A semi-crystalline shape memory elastomer, crosslinked poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate), is used to prepare various micro-optic components, ranging from microlens and microprism arrays to diffraction gratings and holograms. The precise replication of surface features at the micro- and nanoscale and the formation of crosslinked shape memory polymer networks can be achieved in a single step via compression molding. Further deformation via hot pressing or stretching of micro-optics formed in this manner allows manipulation of the microscopic surface features, and thus the corresponding optical properties. Due to the shape memory effect, the original surface structures and the optical properties can be recovered and the devices be reprogrammed, with excellent reversibility in the optical properties. Furthermore, arrays of transparent resistive microheaters can be integrated with deformed micro-optical devices to selectively trigger the recovery of surface features in a spatially programmable manner, thereby providing additional capabilities in user-defi nable optics.

Abstract:Device applications of shape memory polymers demand diverse shape changing geometries, which are currently limited to non-omnidirectional movement. This restriction originates from traditional thermomechanical programming methods such as uniaxial, biaxial stretching, bending, or compression. A solvent-modulated programming method is reported to achieve an omnidirectional shape memory behavior. The method utilizes freeze drying of hydrogels of polyethylene glycol networks with a melting transition temperature around 50 °C in their dry state. Such a process creates temporarily fixed macroporosity, which collapses upon heating, leading to significant omnidirectional shrinkage. These shrunken materials can swell in water to form hydrogels again and the omnidirectional programming and recovery can be repeated. The fixity ratio (R f ) and recovery ratio (R r ) can be maintained at 90% and 98% respectively upon shape memory multicycling. The maximum linear recoverable strain, as limited by the maximum swelling, is ≈90%. Amongst various application potentials, one can envision the fabrication of multiphase composites by taking advantages of the omnidirectional shrinkage from a porous polymer to a denser structure.

Abstract:Spatially heterogeneous distribution of active components is key to the diverse shape‐morphing behaviors of biological species and their associated functions. Artificial morphing materials employing similar strategies have widened the design space for advanced functional devices. Typically, the spatial heterogeneity is introduced during the material synthesis/fabrication step and cannot be altered afterward. An approach that allows spatio‐selective programming of crystallinity in a shape‐memory polymer (SMP) by a digital photothermal effect is reported. The light‐patternable crystallinity affects greatly the shape morphing behavior. Consequently, a pre‐stretched 2D film with spatial heterogeneity in crystallinity can morph with time into designable 3D permanent shapes, achieving the 4D transformation. This approach utilizes a reprocessible thermoplastic SMP (polylactide) and the programming relies on a physical phase transformation (crystallization) instead of chemical heterogeneity. This allows repeated erasing and reprogramming using the same material, suggesting a versatile and sustainable means for manufacturing advanced morphing devices.

Abstract:Abstract The ability to undergo bond exchange in a dynamic covalent polymer network has brought many benefits not offered by classical thermoplastic and thermoset polymers. Despite the bond exchangeability, the overall network topologies for existing dynamic networks typically cannot be altered, limiting their potential expansion into unexplored territories. By harnessing topological defects inherent in any real polymer network, we show herein a general design that allows a dynamic network to undergo rearrangement to distinctive topologies. The use of a light triggered catalyst further allows spatio-temporal regulation of the network topology, leading to an unusual opportunity to program polymer properties. Applying this strategy to functional shape memory networks yields custom designable multi-shape and reversible shape memory characteristics. This molecular principle expands the design versatility for network polymers, with broad implications in many other areas including soft robotics, flexible electronics, and medical devices.

Abstract:Multi-shape memory polymers were prepared by the macroscale spatio-assembly of building blocks in this work. The building blocks were methyl acrylate-co-styrene (MA-co-St) copolymers, which have the St-block-(St-random-MA)-block-St tri-block chain sequence. This design ensures that their transition temperatures can be adjusted over a wide range by varying the composition of the middle block. The two St blocks at the chain ends can generate a crosslink network in the final device to achieve strong bonding force between building blocks and the shape memory capacity. Due to their thermoplastic properties, 3D printing was employed for the spatio-assembly to build devices. This method is capable of introducing many transition phases into one device and preparing complicated shapes via 3D printing. The device can perform a complex action via a series of shape changes. Besides, this method can avoid the difficult programing of a series of temporary shapes. The control of intermediate temporary shapes was realized via programing the shapes and locations of building blocks in the final device.

Abstract:Encoding molecular ordering during liquid crystalline network (LCN) formation endows preprogrammed but fixed shape morphing in response to external stimuli. The incorporation of dynamic covalent bonds enables shape reprogramming but also permanently alters the network structures. Here, an entropic approach that can program complex shapes via directed solvent evaporation from an isotropic LCN organogel is discoursed. Different shapes can be erased and reprogrammed from the same LCN on demand depending on the modes of deformation of the organogel during solvent evaporation. The ability to decouple network synthesis and molecular alignment relaxes the requirements to LCN chemistry and alignment methods, allowing for the realization of a variety of origami/kirigami structures and 4D shape morphing of LCNs printed from the digital light processing technique with unattainable spatial and temporal controls.

Abstract:A shape memory polymer always experiences a large modulus change above and below its transition temperature. Cooling down below its transition temperature leads to a sharp modulus increase. That helps the temporary shape fixing, however, it also gives the material noncompliant character, which may be a harmful factor in some applications. In this work, an approach is proposed to prepare a soft shape memory polymer with low modulus even at low temperature. The realization of this polymer depends on the mixing of two raw materials through nano-latex blending technique. By using styrene, meth acrylate, and n-butyl acrylate as model monomer, two kinds of core-shell latexes are synthesized, which have a triblock structure as polystyrene-b-poly (styrene-co-meth acrylate)-b-polystyrene and polystyrene-b-poly (n-butyl acrylate)-b-polystyrene, respectively. Blending in the unit of nano-latex particle helps them mixing very homogenously and forms co-continuous morphology. The blending ratio is tuned to prepare materials with modulus lower than 50 MPa at 20 degrees C, meanwhile with excellent shape memory performance. Such a soft shape memory polymer shows unique advantage as a compliant thermal-triggered gripper to stick and place objects.

Abstract:Poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL)-based semi-crystalline polymers are shape memory polymers that have been extensively used in various applications ranging from biological, soft robots and flexible electronic devices. Despite the large number of studies aiming at constructing the well-defined crosslinked polymer networks, detailed investigations in terms of structural factors that influence the thermal-mechanical and shape memory properties are still poorly understand and investigated. In this work, PCL crosslinked networks with different molecular weight of diacrylate PCL macromonoter (M n ) are prepared via base-catalyzed thiol-ene Michael addition. The results indicate that the melting temperature, the crystallization temperature and the crystallinity of the polymer networks exhibit an upward trend with increment of M n . Besides that, the tensile strength and shape memory properties are also correlated with M n . Controlled-strain DMA characterization on shape memory properties show that the cPCL-10000 network exhibits the most remarkable shape fixity and shape recovery ratio, indicative of lowering cross-linking density and chains mobility. In particular, permanent shape reconfiguration can also be achieved by triggering transesterification within the same polymer network, and a possible molecular mechanism responsible for the elasticity-based shape memory effect and plasticity-based permanent shape reconfigurability is proposed and combined to present the 2D-to-3D shape-morphing behaviors.
