Abstract:Highly oriented zinc oxide nanofibers with a length of several centimeters are fabricated using a newly modified electrospinning method. Very different from the conventional electrospinning process, the fibers are collected between the electrodes. The key to success is the reduction of interelectrode distance and the use of an ultra strong electric field, which is about six times higher than conventional conditions.

Abstract:A general synthetic method has been developed to fabricate and assemble ferromagnetic transition metal nanofibers. By employing the novel electrospinning technique followed by subsequent heat treatment, we have successfully prepared uniform nanofibers of Fe, Co, and Ni with diameters of similar to 25 nm and lengths longer than 100 mu m. Using a specially designed fiber collector, we can conveniently assemble magnetic nanofibers into aligned arrays. The electrospun magnetic metal nanofibers have unique magnetic properties, with much enhanced coercivities relative to bulk materials. The outstanding features of this approach to get one-dimensional magnetic nanostructure are its simplicity, effectiveness, and ease of assembly. Therefore, electrospun magnetic nanofibers can potentially be used in fabrication of high-density magnetic recording, magnetic sensors, flexible magnets, and spintronic devices.

Abstract:Electrospinning can produce nanofibers with extremely high surface-to-volume ratio and well tunable properties. The technique has been widely used in different disciplines. To fabricate fibers with required properties, parameters of fabrication should be well controlled and adjusted according to specific applications. Modification of electrospinning devices to align fibers in highly ordered architectures could improve their functions. Enhanced efficiency have also been obtained through the upscaling modification of spinnerets. With the outstanding efficiency, electrospinning has exhibited huge potentials to construct various nanostructures, such as artificial vessel, membrane for desalination and so on.

Abstract:Electrospinning is a widely used process to produce nanofibers due to the ability to precisely tune fiber morphology and other nanofiber fabric characteristics. A lot of work in the past few decades to study the various factors affecting electrospun fiber morphologies, however there has been no study to date to look at all contributing factors in a statistically systematical way. In particular, limited work has been conducted demonstrating a method to fabricate high quality, ultrathin nanofibers with mean diameter <50 nm, narrow diameter standard deviation, and low percentage of non-fiber areas (defects). We present a method using a series of statistically designed experiments to create high quality ultrathin polyvinylpyrrolidone nanofibers containing FeCo salts. Results from a Plackett-Burman screening experiment show solution surface tension and solution viscosity are the most significant variables to describe fiber morphology and show metal salt concentration, applied voltage, polymer molecular weight, and solution volume are moderately significant. The Plackett-Burman design is used to inform variables and variable ranges for a subsequent 3-factor, 3-level Box-Behnken design. The polynomial model determined from Box-Behnken experiment has close agreement to measured point validation of an optimized solution, which is determined to have 34.8 mN m(-1), viscosity of 42 cS, and metal salt concentration of 3.0% and yielded mean diameter of around 30 nm, with low beads content and diameter standard deviation. This optimized solution recipe is an excellent formulation to make as-spun fibers as precursors for many materials, such as ultrafine FeCo nanotubes or nanorods with mean diameter of around 15 nm.

Preparation and Properties of Poly (vinyl Alcohol) Nanofibers by Electrospinning

Abstract:In the present contribution, ultrafine fibers were spun from poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/water solution using a homemade electrospinning set-up. The effects of the concentration of polymer solution, spinning voltage and collection distance between the tip to target on the morphological appearance and average diameter of the as-spun PVA fibers were investigated. A more comprehensive and systematic understanding of process parameters of the electrospinning was obtained. In this experiment fibers with diameter ranging from 100 nm to 1000 nm were obtained. The results showed that the solution concentration significantly affected the morphology and diameters of the as-spun PVA fibers. Lower concentration tended to facilitate the formation of fibers with beads. With increasing solution concentration, the morphology was changed from beaded fiber to smooth and uniform fiber and the fiber diameter was increased. Spinning voltage also had an important influence on the diameters of fibers, while the collection distance slightly affected the diameters of fibers. Thinner fibers were received on the target with lower voltage applied on the nozzle. The morphology of fibers electrospun from PVA was observed and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
Fabrication of Mn2O3 nanowire with ultra fine morphology via an electrospinning technology

Abstract:Thin Mn2(NO3)2/PVA precursor nanowire was fabricated via electrospinning technology at a low temperature in this paper. After dried at 150°C for 10 hours and then sintered at 450°C for 2 hours, Mn2O3 nanowire was successfully obtained. The nanowire was characterized using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that the nanowire was composed of pure Mn 2O3 phase. The nanowire exhibited smooth surface and continuous sharp with length of tens of micrometer. The diameter of Mn 2O3 nanowire was measured and calculated through SEM, which showed most probable value of about 110 nm and 270 nm. The reason of the diameter separation was also discussed.

Abstract:A novel method named as high pressure air-jet atomized electrospinning was proposed to prepare nanofibers with ultrahigh production. The spinning solution with lower concentration and viscosity was cutted into micron-sized droplets by a 700 mesh filter in the front of nozzle and then was crushed and atomized into massive smaller droplets, which were drawn into nanofibers directly under the electric force and airflow force. Flow field under different air pressure was simulated to study its effect on the formation of nanofibers. The airflow showed the minimum pressure and maximum velocity at a location 2 cm away from the spray nozzle, where small droplets cutted were crushed and atomized into massive smaller droplets by the converging airflow. The velocity and distribution region of the airflow increased with increasing air pressure. It showed a smaller diameter of 150 nm and ultrahigh production of 75.6 g/h for nanofibers prepared based on this novel method at the air pressure of 0.8 MPa. The production of nanofibers almost reached thousands of times of that from conventional needle electrospinning.

Abstract:With the rapid development of human technology, we are continuously facing new problems and challenges. On the one hand are the limited natural resources, and on the other hand are the increasing demands for convenient lifestyle. It is not a good idea to sacrifice one aspect to satisfy the other, but we should seek a balance between sustainable development and the comfortable living concept. Thus, it becomes a very crucial task to explore the low-cost, large-scale, and environmentally friendly fabrication methods for wide applications. Electrospinning is a top-down method in which polymeric or melt components are drawn out from a solution system onto a collector by electrostatic force. In comparison with other methods, including drawing, template synthesis, chemical vapor deposition, and so on, electrospinning offers some attractive features. One of the most important advantages is its industrial scalability, which makes it possible to directly transfer the results from laboratory research to the industry. In general, the unique advantages of electrospun nanostructures, including high spatial interconnectivity, high porosity, and large surface-to-volume ratio, make it a promising fabrication method in a wide range of applications. Effective Method for High-Throughput Manufacturing of Ultrafine Fibres Via Needleless Centrifugal Spinning

Abstract:A nozzle-free spinneret with a flow controller was applied to produce nanoscale fibres of both polymeric solutions and melts by centrifugal field. This centrifugal processing strategy can be used to fabricate non-woven webs composed of fibre diameters ranging from several microns down to 400 nm or less. The fibre morphology and diameter in melt needleless centrifugal spinning (NCS) can be controlled by varying the rotation speed, temperature, liquid properties and collector system. Solution NCS adds the operating parameters of the solution concentration and the solvent. The field emission scanning electron microscope images show that the average diameter of the fibres is approximately 2 +/- 0.8 mu m and 400 +/- 100 nm for polyethylene terephthalate fibres (2400 rpm, 245 degrees C) and polyvinylpyrrolidone fibres (20 wt%, 4000 rpm), respectively.

Abstract:Electrospinning provides a simple and versatile method for generating ultrathin fibers from a rich variety of materials that include polymers, composites, and ceramics. This article presents an overview of this technique, with focus on progress achieved in the last three years. After a brief description of the setups for electrospinning, we choose to concentrate on the mechanisms and theoretical models that have been developed for electrospinning, as well as the ability to control the diameter, morphology, composition, secondary structure, and spatial alignment of electrospun nanofibers. In addition, we highlight some potential applications associated with the remarkable features of electrospun nanofibers. Our discussion is concluded with some personal perspectives on the future directions in which this wonderful technique could be pursued. Current research activities on the electrospinning of nanofibers (see Figure, right) are comprehensively reviewed. After a brief discussion of setups (see Figure, left), the mechanisms and theoretical models for electrospinning are presented, followed by approaches for controlling the diameter, morphology, composition, secondary structure, and spatial alignment. Some potential applications of the remarkable features of electrospun fibers are also highlighted.

The electrospinning process of conducting polymer had marked differences with that of common polymers due to the intractability of the pure inherently conductive polymer. The recent achievements of the conducting polymers micro- and nano fibers via electrospinning technology are reviewed. The emphasis is placed on the electrospinning process, and the applications of the resultant fibers are also addressed.

Abstract:Electrospinning uses an electrical charge to draw very fine (typically on the micro or nano scale) fibers from a liquid. Electrospinning or electrostatic spinning shares characteristics of both electrospraying and conventional solution dry spinning of fibers. The method does not need the use of coagulation chemistry or high temperatures to produce solid threads from solution. This makes the process particularly suited for the production of fibers using large and complex molecules. Because the full potential of biomaterials being used in various applications, field of nanofibers have involved considerable interest in biotechnology and medicine and there has been fast development in this area in recent years.

Abstract:We have successfully prepared nanostructured LiCoO2 and LiMn2O4 fibers using a novel high frequency electrospinning method. These fibers were composed of very small crystalline grains uniformly linked with an average size less than 100 nm. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) were used to characterize their structures and electrochemical properties, respectively. These results suggested that a high frequency electrospinning was expected to be an effective method for the fabrication of inorganic composite fibers.

Abstract:Nanofibers have been developed rapidly owing to their novel properties and wide applications. Scalable manufacturing of nanofibers is important for future applications. This paper provides a brief review on current research activities dealing with the synthesis of nanofibers by solution spinning methods, including electrospinning, blowspinning, centrifugal spinning, and drawspinning. Among these methods, electrospinning is the most widely studied and it allows the production of fibers with the smallest average diameters among the four technologies. Blowspinning and centrifugal spinning possess the highest productivity among the spinning techniques owing to their high efficient driving force. Drawspinning is suitable for producing ultra-long single nanofiber or nanofiber mesh, although it presents the lowest productivity among these methods. In addition, this paper describes some scalable applications of nanofibers in various areas, including filters, flexible electronics, and compressive ceramic thermal insulators.

Abstract:Electrospinning has drawn wide attention for its powerful capacity to produce ultrafine nanofibers (UNFs) from various materials. These UNFs demonstrated significantly enhanced performance, such as ultra-high surface area, more porosity and stronger mechanical properties. Here, we comprehensively review their basic principles, state-of-the-art methods and preponderant applications. We begin with a brief introduction to the refinement theory of polymer jets, followed by discussion of factors affecting fiber refinement. We then discuss the refining strategies from the aspects of solution properties, spinning parameters, auxiliary force and post-treatment. Afterward, we highlight the most relevant and recent applications associated with the remarkable features of UNFs, including filtration materials, supercapacitors, biomedical materials and other applications. At the end, we offer perspectives on the challenges, opportunities, and new directions for future development of electrospun UNFs.

Branched nanofibers with tiny diameters for air filtration via one-step electrospinning

Abstract:Engineering the surface morphology of fibers has been attracting significant consideration in various areas and applications. In this study, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) branched nanofibers with a diameter of less than 50 nm are electrospun directly at a low relative humidity by adding tetrabutylammonium chloride. The effects of the branched structure on the specific surface area and pore size distribution are investigated, and the filtration properties of the air filter based on branched nanofiber webs with different basis weights are studied. The results exhibit that the air filter based on PVDF branched nanofibers with the basis weight of 1 g/m 2 has an outstanding filtration efficiency (99.999%) to 0.26 μm sodium chloride particles under the pressure drop of 126.17 Pa. We believe that this study can be used as a useful reference for the preparation of branched nanofibers through one-step electrospinning.
