Abstract:Accurately probing the interatomic potential (IP) in crystals is essential for understanding the dynamic mechanisms in phase transitions and chemical reactions. Here, by interrogating laser-induced coherent phonon dynamics, we propose a new kind of optical microscopy for determining effective interatomic potentials beyond the harmonic and adiabatic approximation. This technique is tested against available experimental and first-principles data, by which the interatomic potential of graphene and a few other materials are successfully reconstructed in a large configuration space and beyond the ground state. A significant nonadiabatic effect emerges in nonlinear phonon dynamics and the IP reconstruction, which corrects the anharmonic part of IP much stronger (up to 50%) than the harmonic part. The nonadiabaticity-modulated potentials can lead to ∼10% correction on thermal expansion coefficients and ∼0.3 eV on phase transition barriers. This work offers a new strategy for probing complex interactions in quantum materials and exemplifies the universality of nonadiabaticity, which deserves a full consideration for precisely determining physical properties of quantum many-body systems.

Abstract:The probing of coherent lattice vibrations in solids has conventionally been carried out using time-resolved transient optical spectroscopy, with which only the relative oscillation amplitude can be obtained. Using time-resolved X-ray techniques, absolute electron–phonon coupling strength could be extracted. However, the complexity of such an experiment renders it impossible to be carried out in conventional laboratories. Here we demonstrate that the electron–phonon, anharmonic phonon–phonon coupling and their relaxation dynamics can be probed in real time using high-harmonic spectroscopy. Our technique is background-free and has extreme sensitivity directly in the energy domain. In combination with the optical deformation potential calculated from density functional perturbation theory and the absolute energy modulation depth, our measurement reveals the maximum displacement of neighbouring oxygen atoms in α-quartz crystal to tens of picometres in real space. By employing a straightforward and robust time-windowed Gabor analysis for the phonon-modulated high-harmonic spectrum, we successfully observe channel-resolved four-phonon scattering processes in such highly nonlinear interactions. Our work opens a new realm for the accurate measurement of coherent phonons and their scattering dynamics, which allows for potential benchmarking ab initio calculations in solids.

Probing Phonon dynamics and Electron-Phonon Coupling by High Harmonic Generation in Solids

Abstract:Acting as a highly nonlinear response to the strong laser field, high harmonic generation (HHG) naturally contains the fingerprints of atomic and electronic properties of materials. Electronic properties of a solid such as band structure and topology can thus be probed, while the phonon dynamics during HHG are often neglected. Here we show that by exploiting the effects of phonon deformation on HHG, the intrinsic phonon information can be deciphered and direct probing of band- and mode-resolved electron-phonon couplings (EPC) of photoexcited materials is possible. Considering HHG spectroscopy can be vacuum free and unrestricted to electron occupation, this work suggests HHG is promising for all-optical characterization of EPC in solids, especially for gapped quantum states or materials under high pressure.

Abstract:Abstract Nonlinear phononics relies on the resonant optical excitation of infrared-active lattice vibrations to induce targeted structural deformations in solids. This form of dynamical crystal structure design has been applied to control the functional properties of many complex solids, including magnetic materials, superconductors and ferroelectrics. However, phononics has so far been restricted to protocols in which structural deformations occur within the optically excited volume, sometimes resulting in unwanted heating. Here, we extend nonlinear phononics to propagating polaritons, spatially separating the functional response from the optical drive. We use mid-infrared optical pulses to resonantly drive a phonon at the surface of ferroelectric LiNbO 3 . Time-resolved stimulated Raman scattering reveals that the ferroelectric polarization is reduced over the entire 50 μm depth of the sample, far beyond the micrometre depth of the evanescent phonon field. We attribute this effect to the anharmonic coupling between the driven mode and a polariton that propagates into the material. For high excitation amplitudes, we reach a regime in which the ferroelectric polarization is reversed, as revealed by a sign change in the Raman tensor coefficients of all the polar modes.

Abstract:Processes involving ultrafast laser driven electron-phonon dynamics play a fundamental role in the response of quantum systems in a growing number of situations of interest, as evidenced by phenomena such as strongly driven phase transitions and light driven engineering of material properties. To show how these processes can be captured from a computational perspective, we simulate the transient absorption spectra and high harmonic generation signals associated with valley selective excitation and intra-band charge carrier relaxation in monolayer hexagonal boron nitride. We show that the multi-trajectory Ehrenfest dynamics approach, implemented in combination with real-time time-dependent density functional theory and tight-binding models, offers a simple, accurate and efficient method to study ultrafast electron-phonon coupled phenomena in solids under diverse pump-probe regimes which can be easily incorporated into the majority of real-time ab-initio software packages.

Abstract:The strong coupling between intense laser fields and valence electrons in molecules causes a distortion of the potential energy hypersurfaces which determine the motion of nuclei in a molecule and influences possible reaction pathways. The coupling strength varies with the angle between the light electric field and valence orbital, and thereby adds another dimension to the effective molecular potential energy surface, allowing for the emergence of light-induced conical intersections. Here, we demonstrate in theory and experiment that the full complexity of such light-induced potential energy surfaces can be uncovered. In H$_2^+$, the simplest of molecules, we observe a strongly modulated angular distribution of protons which has escaped prior observation. These modulations directly result from ultrafast dynamics on the light-induced molecular potentials and can be modified by varying the amplitude, duration and phase of the mid-infrared dressing field. This opens new opportunities for manipulating the dissociation of small molecules using strong laser fields.

Abstract:Phonon polaritons hold potential prospects of nanophotonic applications at the mid- and far-infrared wavelengths. However, their experimental investigation in the far-infrared range has long been a technical challenge due to the lack of suitable light sources and detectors. To obviate these difficulties, here we use an electron probe with sub-10 meV energy resolution and subnanometer spatial resolution to study far-infrared surface phonon polaritons (∼50-70 meV) in ZnO nanostructures. We observe ultraslow propagation and interference fringes of propagating surface phonon polaritons and obtain their dispersion relation through measurements in the coordinate space. By mapping localized modes in nanowires and flakes, we reveal their localized nature and investigate geometry and size effects. Associated with simulation, we show that surface phonon polariton behaviors can be well described by the local continuum dielectric model. Our work paves the way for spatial-resolved investigation of surface phonon polaritons by electron probes and forwards polaritonics in the far-infrared range.

Abstract:The invention of laser immediately enabled us to detect nonlinearities of photon interaction in matter, as manifested for example by Franken et al.'s detection of second harmonic generation and the excitation of the Brillouin forward scattering process. With the recent advancement in high power high energy laser and the examples of the nonlinearity study of laser-matter interaction by virtue of properly arranging laser and detectors, we envision the possibility of probing nonlinearities of photon interaction in vacuum over substantial spacetime scales compared with the microscopic scale provided by high energy accelerators. The hithertofore never detected Euler-Heisenberg nonlinearities in quantum electrodynamics (QED) in vacuum should come within our reach of detection using intense laser fields. Also our method should put us in a position with a far greater sensitivity of probing possible light-mass fields that have been postulated. With the availability of a large number of coherent photons our suggested measurement methods include the phase sensitive (contrast) imaging that avoids the pedestal noise and the scheme of second harmonic detection of photon nonlinearities in vacuum over a long co-propagating distance incurring resonance excitation. These methods carve out a substantial swath of new experimental parameter regimes of the exploration of photon nonlinearities in vacuum covering the force range from the electron mass scale to below neV.

Abstract:The generation of high-order harmonics in bulk solids subjected to intense ultrashort laser pulses has opened up new avenues for research in extreme nonlinear optics and light–matter interaction on subcycle time scales. Despite significant advancement over the past decade, a complete understanding of the involved phenomena is still lacking. High-harmonic generation in solids is currently understood as arising from nonlinear intraband currents, interband recollision, and ionization-related phenomena. As all of these mechanisms involve or rely upon laser-driven excitation, we combine measurements of the angular dependence of nonlinear absorption and high-order harmonic generation in bulk crystals to demonstrate the relation between high-harmonic emission and nonlinear, laser-induced ionization in solids. An unambiguous correlation between the emission of harmonics and laser-induced ionization is found experimentally, which is supported by numerical solutions of the semiconductor Bloch equations and an analytical model of orientation-dependent ionization rates using maximally localized Wannier functions.

Abstract:Ultrafast atomic vibrations mediate heat transport, serve as fingerprints for chemical bonds and drive phase transitions in condensed matter systems. Light pulses shorter than the atomic oscillation period can not only probe, but even stimulate and control collective excitations. In general, such interactions are performed with free-propagating pulses. Here, we demonstrate intra-cavity excitation and time-domain sampling of coherent optical phonons inside an active laser oscillator. Employing real-time spectral interferometry, we reveal that Terahertz beats of Raman-active optical phonons are the origin of soliton bound-states - also termed "Soliton molecules" - and we resolve a coherent coupling mechanism of phonon and intra-cavity soliton motion. Concurring electronic and nuclear refractive nonlinearities generate distinct soliton trajectories and, effectively, enhance the time-domain Raman signal. We utilize the intrinsic soliton motion to automatically perform highspeed Raman spectroscopy of the intra-cavity crystal. Our results pinpoint the impact of Raman-induced soliton interactions in crystalline laser media and microresonators, and offer unique perspectives toward ultrafast nonlinear phononics by exploiting the coupling of atomic motion and solitons inside a cavity.

Probing anharmonic phonons by quantum correlators: A path integral approach

Abstract:We devise an efficient scheme to determine vibrational properties from Path Integral Molecular Dynamics (PIMD) simulations. The method is based on zero-time Kubo-transformed correlation functions and captures the anharmonicity of the potential due to both temperature and quantum effects. Using analytical derivations and numerical calculations on toy-model potentials, we show that two different estimators built upon PIMD correlation functions fully characterize the phonon spectra and the anharmonicity strength. The first estimator is associated with the force-force quantum correlators and, in the weak anharmonic regime, yields reliable zero-point motion frequencies and thermodynamic properties of the quantum system. The second one is instead connected to displacement-displacement correlators and accurately probes the lowest-energy phonon excitations, regardless of the anharmonicity strength of the system. We also prove that the use of generalized eigenvalue equations, in place of the standard normal mode equations, leads to a significant speed-up in the PIMD phonon calculations, both in terms of faster convergence rate and smaller time step bias. Within this framework, using ab initio PIMD simulations, we compute phonon dispersions of diamond and of the high-pressure I41/amd phase of atomic hydrogen. We find that in the latter case, the anharmonicity is stronger than previously estimated and yields a sizeable red-shift in the vibrational spectrum of atomic hydrogen.

Abstract:Electron-phonon coupling is an important energy transfer mechanism in solids after ultrafast laser excitation. In this study, we present an extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and infrared (IR) pump-probe photoemission experiment to investigate the electron-phonon coupling in nonequilibrium gold. The energy of IR-laser-emitted photoelectrons is shifted due to the EUV photoemission and oscillates with a ∼4THz frequency. Such oscillation is considered as the effective excitation of the longitudinal acoustic phonon mode in gold through the spectral-dependent electron-phonon coupling. Our study showcases the capability of time-resolved photoemission electron microscopy to monitor the non-equilibrium lattice vibrations with ultrahigh spatial and temporal resolution.
A Superconducting Single-Atom Phonon Laser

Abstract:The development of quantum acoustics has enabled the cooling of mechanical objects to their quantum ground state, generation of mechanical Fock-states, and Schrodinger cat states. Such demonstrations have made mechanical resonators attractive candidates for quantum information processing, metrology, and macroscopic tests of quantum mechanics. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a direct quantum-acoustic equivalent of a single-atom laser. A single superconducting qubit coupled to a high-overtone bulk acoustic resonator is used to drive the onset of phonon lasing. We observe the absence of a sharp lower lasing threshold and characteristic upper lasing threshold, unique predictions of single-atom lasing. Lasing of an object with a 25 ug mass represents a new regime of laser physics. It provides a possible tool for generating large amplitude coherent states in circuit quantum acoustodynamics, which is important for fundamental and quantum information applications.

Abstract:Phonon polaritons (PhPs) are collective phonon oscillations with hybridized electromagnetic fields, which concentrate mid-infrared optical fields that can match molecular vibrations. The utilization of PhPs holds the promise for chemical sensing tools and polariton-enhanced nanospectroscopy. However, investigations and innovations on PhPs in the aqueous phase remain stagnant because of the lack of in situ mid-infrared nanoimaging methods in water. Strong infrared absorption from water prohibits optical delivery and detection in the mid-infrared for scattering-type near-field microscopy. Here, we present our solution: the detection of photothermal responses caused by the excitation of PhPs by liquid phase peak force infrared (LiPFIR) microscopy. Characteristic interference fringes of PhPs in 10B isotope-enriched h-BN were measured in the aqueous phase and their dispersion relationship extracted. LiPFIR enables the measurement of mid-infrared PhPs in the fluid phase, opening possibilities and facilitating the development of mid-IR phonon polaritonics in water.

Abstract:For over a century, x-ray scattering has been the most powerful tool for determining the equilibrium structure of crystalline materials. Deviations from perfect periodicity, for example due to thermal motion of the atoms, reduces the intensity of the Bragg peaks as well as produces structure in the diffuse scattering background. Analysis of the thermal diffuse scattering (TDS) had been used to determine interatomic force constants and phonon dispersion in relatively simple cases before inelastic neutron scattering became the preferred technique to study lattice dynamics. With the advent of intense synchrotron x-ray sources, there was a renewed interest in TDS for measuring phonon dispersion. The relatively short x-ray pulses emanating from these sources also enables the measurement of phonon dynamics in the time domain. Prior experiments on nonequilibrium phonons were either limited by time-resolution and/or to relatively long wavelength excitations. Here we present the first images of nonequilibrium phonons throughout the Brillouin zone in photoexcited III-V semiconductors, indium-phosphide and indium-antimonide, using picosecond time-resolved diffuse scattering. In each case, we find that the lattice remain out of equilibrium for several hundred picoseconds up to nanoseconds after laser excitation. The non-equilibrium population is dominated by transverse acoustic phonons which in InP are directed along high-symmetry directions. The results have wide implications for the detailed study of electron-phonon and phonon-phonon coupling in solids.
