Abstract:Lithium (Li) is considered a strategic element whose use has significantly expanded. Its current high demand is due to its use in lithium ion batteries for portable electronic devices, whose manufacture and market are extensively growing every day. These days there is a great concern about the final disposal of these batteries. Therefore, the possibility of developing new methodologies to recycle their components is of great importance, both commercially and environmentally. This paper presents results regarding important operational variables for the dissolution of the lithium and cobalt mixed-oxide (LiCoO2) cathodes from spent lithium ion batteries (LIBs) with hydrofluoric acid. The recovery and synthesis of Co and Li compounds were also investigated. The dissolution parameters studied were: temperature, reaction time, solid-liquid ratio, stirring speed, and concentration of HF. The investigated recovery parameters included: pH, temperature, and time with and without stirring. The final precipitation of lithium fluoride was also examined. The results indicate that an increase in the HF concentration, temperature, and reaction time favors the leaching reaction of the LiCoO2. Dissolutions were close to 60%, at 75 °C and 120 min with a HF concentration of 25% (v/v). The recovery of Co and Li were 98% and 80%, respectively, with purities higher than 94%. Co and Li compounds, such as Co3O4 and LiF, were synthesized. Furthermore, it was possible to almost completely eliminate the F− ions as CaF2.

Abstract:The recycling of cathode materials from spent lithium-ion battery has attracted extensive attention, but few research have focused on spent blended cathode materials. In reality, the blended materials of lithium iron phosphate and ternary are widely used in electric vehicles, so it is critical to design an effective recycling technique. In this study, an efficient method for recovering Li and Fe from the blended cathode materials of spent LiFePO 4 and LiNi x Co y Mn 1- x-y O 2 batteries is proposed. First, 87% Al was removed by alkali leaching. Then, 91.65% Li, 72.08% Ni, 64.6% Co and 71.66% Mn were further separated by selective leaching with H 2 SO 4 and H 2 O 2 . Li, Ni, Co and Mn in solution were recovered in the form of Li 2 CO 3 and hydroxide respectively. Subsequently, 98.38% Fe was leached from the residue by two stage process, and it is recovered as FePO 4 ·2H 2 O with a purity of 99.5% by precipitation. Fe and P were present in FePO 4 ·2H 2 O in amounts of 28.34% and 15.98%, respectively. A Technology of Recovery of Spent Lithium-Ion Secondary Battery Positive Electrode Materials

Abstract:Spent lithium-ion secondary batteries contain amounts of scarce non-ferrous metals as Co,Cu and toxic substance LiPF6,so the recovery of spent lithium-ion secondary battery and innocent treatment are necessary and beneficial.In this paper,a recovery procedure of spent lithium-ion secondary battery is proposed as follows:splitting →pretreating the positive electrode material with NMP →leaching the cobalt in positive electrode material→ removing impurities extracted with P204 →separating cobalt ion from lithium ion extracted with P507,obtaining qualified cobalt chloride solution.The characteristics of this process flow are:the aluminum foil in positive electrode material is recovered as simple substance,and the recovery rate of cobalt in the positive electrode material is 97.33% in form of cobalt chloride solution,which has a good effect on the separation and recovery of non-ferrous metals in spent lithium-ion secondary batteries positive electrode material.

Abstract:Waste lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries consist of various of metallic and nonmetallic materials, with lithium being a critical strategic resource in the new energy era. Therefore, recycling LFP batteries has become a primary means of secondary lithium resource recovery. However, the presence of the strong binder polyvnylidene fluoride during the recycling process hinders the efficient recovery and separation of cell materials. This study proposes an innovative approach for recovery, involving ultralow temperature treatment and mechanical separation. In the experimental setup, the ultralow temperature treatment temperature at −140°C for 120 min, followed by 20 s of crushing, resulted in an impressive 96.5% dissociation rate of the cathode material and a purity of 94.2% for lithium iron phosphate. The physical and chemical changes in the cathode materials before and after ultralow temperature treatment were examined using differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer, X-ray fluorescence spectrometer, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). This method has the advantages of low cost, high efficiency, high environmental affinity and no additional products.

Abstract:Recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries is of great importance for environmental protection and resusing resources. This work proposes a green and environmentally friendly recycling strategy of LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 cathode material for spent batteries by an electrochemical method. In the designed electrolysis cell, the produced gaseous species from oxidation of solvent molecules occurring at the interfaces between electrode/cathode materials and active particles/binder exert the force to separate bonded particles from current collector. Meanwhile, the efficient leaching of lithium (>98%) into electrolyte was achieved under an electric field without additional leaching process. The Al can also be recovered in the form of metallic foil. The separation of active material, the selective leaching of lithium, and recovery of Al foil are conducted by one-step electrolysis in a short operating cycle. The remaining transition metals in residues were reused to synthesize LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 material. As the cathode material, the regenerated active material delivers an initial capacity of 161 mAh g–1 at 0.1 C and 88.3% remains after 200 cycles. The superior cycling stability is comparable to the unused commercial batteries. This innovative approach can be readily extended to recover other types of cathode materials for spent lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:We describe an economical and environmentally advantageous, mechanical/chemical procedure for recycling spent lithium-ion batteries removed from a portable computer. The battery cathode comprises complex Li-based oxides: lithium-cobalt-oxide, lithium-nickel-cobalt-aluminum oxide and/or lithium-nickel-cobalt oxide, while the anode is constructed from a graphite-coated copper foil. Other carbon-containing materials should also be present. The electrolyte, the composition of which is not made available by the manufacturer, is probably a Li salt in organic solvent. Following hand removal of the non-metallic container, the battery elements undergo crushing/milling; no other component separation procedure is performed or required. Sixty minute dilute natural gas (4 vol.% in N 2 ) sintering under reducing conditions (673–1123 K), followed by ice-water leaching, is used to efficiently separate Li from the heavy metals in the form of lithium carbonate at high yield and purity; 0.5 h smelting (1773 K) of the remaining metal clinker in air in a closed ceramic crucible, with sodium tetraborate as flux, allows recovery of the heavy, non-ferrous metals (Ni, Co, Cu and their alloys) as mm-size ingots (39% Co, 32.2% Ni, 26.3% Cu). Iron compounds, remanent Li, Al and unburnt graphite are removed as slag. Neither corrosive acids nor costly reagents are required, and hazardous liquid waste is not generated.

Abstract:Recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has become urgently imperative to address global environmental issues and achieve sustainable development of new energy industries. Prioritizing lithium and aluminum leaching is an ideal path for recovering lithium efficiently from spent LFP and preparing high-purity battery-grade FePO4. Here, a novel ferric ions-assisted air oxidation method was proposed for the simultaneous leaching of Li and Al. Fe3+ was ingeniously introduced playing two roles: acting as a catalyst for air oxidation and leaching aluminum. 98.8% Li and 95.2% Al are selectively leached under optimal conditions. The thermodynamic analysis indicated that the displacement reaction between Al and Fe3+ dominates the leaching of Al. Furthermore, Cl- can promote the leaching of Al by forming a stable complex [AlCl4](-) with Al3+. The reaction course and mechanism were clarified by various characterizations, which indicate that the successful selective leaching of lithium does not destroy the original structure of LFP and the presence of carbon coatings. A cycling process was proposed for enriching the Li+ concentration and reusing Fe3+, and then Li2CO3 with a purity of 99wt.% was successfully prepared. This method demonstrates excellent economic efficiency and environmental friendliness, thus providing a sustainable and low-carbon recycling route for the spent LFP industry.

Abstract:In the industrial practice of spent lithium-ion battery recycling, mechanical separation, pyrometallurgy and chemical dissolution technologies are often used to achieve the separation and recovery of cathode materials, but there are problems such as low material dissociation rate, low recovery rate, high energy consumption, serious lithium loss, and impurity ion embedding. In this paper, supercritical CO2 fluid was used to strengthen the separation of the cathode active material from the aluminum foil in the spent lithium-ion battery to achieve direct and efficient recovery of the active substance. The analysis of charge and discharge, AC impedance and differential capacitance curves show that the electrode of supercritical recovered material has higher ion diffusion coefficient and better redox reversibility, so it has higher charge and discharge capacity and better cycle stability than the traditional high-temperature calcined recovered material.

Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries have become the most widely used electrochemical energy storage device due to their excellent cycling performance, safety and stability. The service life of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is generally 3∼5 years. Therefore, a large number of spent lithium-ion batteries will be generated in the future. Spent lithium-ion batteries will cause serious environmental pollution if not processed properly, especially the electrolyte. Nowadays, the recycling of lithium-ion batteries is mainly on the high-value electrode materials containing non-ferrous metals such as cobalt, lithium, and nickel. However, due to its volatility, toxicity and flammability, the recycling of electrolyte is less studied. The spent electrolyte reacts with water to form fluoride, which may spread into the air and soil. This will cause serious environmental pollution and endanger human health. And the electrolyte contains a certain concentration of lithium salts and organic solvents, which are worth recovering. They have economic value and can be reused. From the perspective of environmental protection and resource recycling, it is urgent to recycle and utilize electrolyte in a high value way. This paper reviews the current situation of recycling of spent lithium-ion battery electrolyte and its development prospects are prospected.

A lithium-ion battery is a combination system of various elements and their oxides. Current recovering technologies focus on the separation of valuable metal elements. They can inescapably bring secondary contamination and cost to the environment due to the addition of leachants and precipitants. To recover valuable materials, in situ recombination of elements in spent lithium-ion batteries can be a more economical and environment-friendly solution. Herein, we developed a technology based on in situ aluminothermic reduction and interstitial solid solution transformation to recover high-value.-LiAlO2 and LiAl5O8 under vacuum and high-temperature (1723 K) conditions. It was found that the process of Li2O filling into the lattice of O-Al-O structure is an energy-reducing process, while LiAl5O8 was an existing high-energy transition-state matter. Since there was no wastewater generated, the process brought a new environment-friendly method for recovering valuable metals from spent lithium-ion batteries. This study also provides new comprehension regarding the design for high-value products' recovery from multi-element mixed wastes on an atomic scale.
Recovery of Li2CO3 from Spent LiFePO4 by Using a Novel Impurity Elimination Process

Abstract:The large-scale implementations of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries for energy storage systems have been gaining attention around the world due to their quality of high technological maturity and flexible configuration. Unfortunately, the exponential production of LFP batteries is accompanied by an annual accumulation of spent batteries and a premature consumption of the lithium resource. Recycling souring critical battery materials such as Li2CO3 is essential to reduce the supply chain risk and achieve net carbon neutrality goals. During the recovery of Li2CO3, impurity removal is the most crucial step in the hydrometallurgy process of spent LiFePO4, which determines the purity of Li2CO3. By investigating and comparing the results of impurity elimination from the purified Li+-containing liquids with strong and weak alkalis under identical pH conditions, respectively, a strategy based on an alkali mixture has been proposed. The purified Li+-containing liquid was, thereafter, concentrated and sodium carbonate was added in order to precipitate Li2CO3. As a result, a high purity Li2CO3 (99.51%) of battery grade was obtained. LiFePO4 prepared with the recovered Li2CO3 and FePO4 as raw materials also displayed a comparative high capacity and stable cycle performance to the commercial product and further verified the electrochemical activity of the recovered materials.

A green and sustainable strategy toward lithium resources recycling from spent batteries

Abstract:Recycling lithium from spent batteries is challenging because of problems with poor purity and contamination. Here, we propose a green and sustainable lithium recovery strategy for spent batteries containing LiFePO4, LiCoO2, and LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 electrodes. Our proposed configuration of "lithium-rich electrode || LLZTO@LiTFSI+P3HT || LiOH" system achieves double-side and roll-to-roll recycling of lithium-containing electrode without destroying its integrity. The LiTFSI+P3HT-modified LLZTO membrane also solves the H+/Li+ exchange problem and realizes a waterproof protection of bare LLZTO in the aqueous working environment. On the basis of these advantages, our system shows high Li selectivity (97%) and excellent Faradaic efficiency (≥97%), achieving high-purity (99%) LiOH along with the production of H2. The Li extraction processes for spent LiFePO4, LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2, and LiCoO2 batteries is shown to be economically feasible. Therefore, this study provides a previously unexplored technology with low energy consumption as well as high economic and environmental benefits to realize sustainable lithium recycling from spent batteries.

Abstract:LiCoO2 (LCO) lithium-ion battery (LIB) is rich in valuable metals (cobalt and lithium), which has high recycling value. The existing process has basically realized the extraction of cobalt, but there are still shortcomings in harmless disposal of fluorine-containing electrolyte, binder and other organic matters, selective extraction of lithium and low-cost extraction of cobalt. In this context, a novel process was developed to realize the full-component recovery of spent LiCoO2 battery via environmentally friendly pyrolysis and hydrometallurgical leaching. The organic matters were recovered in the form of pyrolytic oil and gas, in which the harmful fluorine element was absorbed by Ca(OH)2 solution. The current collectors (copper and aluminum) were recovered after the easy separation of electrode materials due to the degradation of binders. During pyrolysis the cathode material was deconstructed and reduced under the synergistic effect of pyrolytic gas and anode graphite. Selective recovery of lithium and cobalt was achieved through carbonated water leaching and reductant-free acid leaching. The leaching efficiencies of lithium and cobalt were respectively 87.9% and 99.1% under the optimal conditions. Lithium carbonate and cobalt sulfate were obtained by evaporative crystallization, respectively. The remaining residue was only graphite without impurity entrainment. The results in this research suggest that the process consisting of pyrolysis and hydrometallurgical leaching is inexpensive, efficient, and eco-friendly for full-component recycling of spent LiCoO2 battery.

Abstract:Recovering valuable resources from spent cathodes while minimizing secondary waste generation is emerging as an important objective for the future recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries, including lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. This study proposes the use of oxalic acid leaching followed by ferrioxalate photolysis to separate and recover cathode active material elements from spent LFP batteries. The cathode active material can be rapidly dissolved at room temperature using appropriate quantities of oxalic acid and hydrogen peroxide, as determined through thermodynamic calculations. The dissolved ferrioxalate complex ion (Fe(C 2 O 4 ) 3 3− ) is selectively precipitated through subsequent photolysis at room temperature. Depending on the initial concentration, the decomposition ratio can exceed 95 % within 1–4 h. Molecular mechanism analysis reveals that the decomposition of the Fe(C 2 O 4 ) 3 3− complex ion into water-insoluble FeC 2 O 4 ·2H 2 O results in the precipitation of iron and the separation of metal elements. Lithium can be recovered as dihydrogen phosphates through filtration and water evaporation. No additional precipitant is needed and no other side products are generated during the process. Oxalic acid leaching followed by photolysis offers an environmentally friendly and efficient method for metal recovery from spent LFP cathodes. The photochemical process is a promising approach for reducing secondary waste generation in battery recycling.

Abstract:The burgeoning growth of lithium-ion batteries(LIBs)has caused great concern for the uninterrupted supply of lithium.Although spent LIBs are a richer source of lithium than the natural resources from ore,salt lake brine,or seawater,traditional methodology for recycling of lithium in spent LIBs suffers from costly energy consumption and the generation of unfriendly environmental pollutants.

Abstract:In the cathode of lithium-ion secondary battery, the cobalt content is so high as to reach about 45%-50%. Hence, the recovery of the cathodic material of the spent lithium-ion secondary battery can obtain not only environmental but also economic benefits. This paper describes the recovery of cobalt and lithium from spent lithium-ion secondary battery with wet method. The recovery ratio can reach up to 99% by using solvent extraction to remove the impurity and to separate cobalt and lithium. All the primary element in the spent battery, such as cobalt, lithium and aluminum, have safety outlet that is harmless to environment, which will not produce secondary pollution..
