Abstract:Eclipse Observation from the Moon and Cislunar Space. The observation of lunar eclipses from the Earth’s surface is quite frequent. The observation of solar eclipses, on the other hand, requires a special expedition to the specific geographical area where one is visible; such expeditions frequently are foiled by weather. Observed on Earth, the duration of totality of a solar eclipse is very short. Even on board a highspeed jet aircraft chasing the fleeting shadow above the clouds, there are only a few minutes in which to perform the most important experiments.This study concentrates on the unique opportunities available for performing valuable scientific experiments on the Moon during the occurrence of eclipses of the Sun and Earth. Complementary observations that can be obtained concurrently from the Earth and from Earth-orbiting spacecraft are also examined. Two time phases are distinguished since progress in this transplanted field of a very old science depends directly on the growth of the space program. In the immediate future, scientific results will be limited and will pertain primarily to solar physics and geophysics. Nevertheless, it can be shown that even very simple observations obtained during the initial lunar landings will reveal astonishingly valuable scientific information.For each of the two phases mentioned above, the study discusses the scientific experiments and observations that will probably be most fruitfully performed on the Moon, on Earth, and aboard spacecraft. The range of instrumentation and equipment extends from simple stop watches, cameras, and geigercounters to sophisticated structures such as radio telescopes on the Moon. Throughout the paper, it is shown that the value to be derived from the observations will be greatly enhanced by simultaneous observations from different locations.The substantive results are essentially three-fold. First, the study illustrates how the obtaining of eclipse observations from extraterrestrial locations creates startingly unique opportunities to conduct a variety of scientific experiments not possible from Earth in a number of diverse disciplines. Secondly, it shows the importance of conducting coordinated, simultaneous observations both with regard to location on the Moon, on the Earth, and in space, and with regard to different disciplines. Finally, it emphasizes the value of international cooperation to such an eclipse program. This cooperation should encompass amateur as well as professional astronomical observations of eclipses from all parts of the earth, at the same time that space scientists perform their observations on the Moon and aboard spacecraft.
