Abstract:This article presents a literature review of sensors for the monitoring of benzene in ambient air and other volatile organic compounds. Combined with information provided by stakeholders, manufacturers and literature, the review considers commercially available sensors, including PID-based sensors, semiconductor (resistive gas sensors) and portable on-line measuring devices as for example sensor arrays. The bibliographic collection includes the following topics: sensor description, field of application at fixed sites, indoor and ambient air monitoring, range of concentration levels and limit of detection in air, model descriptions of the phenomena involved in the sensor detection process, gaseous interference selectivity of sensors in complex VOC matrix, validation data in lab experiments and under field conditions.

Highly Selective Detection of Benzene and Discrimination of Volatile Aromatic Compounds Using Oxide Chemiresistors with Tunable Rh-TiO2 Catalytic Overlayers

Abstract:Volatile aromatic compounds are major air pollutants, and their health impacts should be assessed accurately based on the concentration and composition of gas mixtures. Herein, novel bilayer sensors consisting of a SnO2 sensing layer and three different xRh-TiO2 catalytic overlayers (x = 0.5, 1, and 2 wt%) are designed for the new functionalities such as the selective detection, discrimination, and analysis of benzene, toluene, and p-xylene. The 2Rh-TiO2/SnO2 bilayer sensor shows a high selectivity and response toward ppm- and sub-ppm-levels of benzene over a wide range of sensing temperatures (325-425 °C). An array of 0.5Rh-, 1Rh-, and 2Rh-TiO2/SnO2 sensors exhibits discrimination and composition analyses of aromatic compounds. The conversion of gases into more active species at moderate catalytic activation and the complete oxidation of gases into non-reactive forms by excessive catalytic promotion are proposed as the reasons behind the enhancement and suppression of analyte gases, respectively. Analysis using proton transfer reaction-quadrupole mass spectrometer (PTR-QMS) is performed to verify the above proposals. Although the sensing characteristics exhibit mild moisture interference, bilayer sensors with systematic and tailored control of gas selectivity and response provide new pathways for monitoring aromatic air pollutants and evaluating their health impacts.
Improvement of On-Site Microfluidic Benzene, Toluene, Xylene (btx) Gas Sensor Loaded with Nanostructured Mesoporous Silicate

Abstract:We have developed a gas sensing microfluidic device for the detection and identification of aromatic volatile organic compound (VOC) gases, namely, benzene, toluene, and xylenes (BTX), which are air pollutants. We combined a nanostructured material, mesoporous silicate, as a gas concentrator and separator, and carried out spectroscopic measurement with a microfluidic device for gas identification and quantitative detection. Our method is completely different from conventional methods such as gas chromatography (GC)/mass spectrometry(MS) and provides a portable, highly sensitive and selective gas monitoring system. In this paper, we report an improvement in the performance of our BTX gas sensor that we realized by optimizing the operating conditions and by using the properties of mesoporous silicate with uniform nanosized pores. We also successfully measured mixture BTX gases separately with this device. We were, able to realise better BTX separation with mesoporous silicate than with random-structured silicates. We successfully analyzed the principle behind the improvement in the gas separation owing to the characteristics of the nanosized pores of mesoporous silicate by positron annihilation spectroscopy.

Abstract:In recent decades, monitoring gases across various scenarios has become a paramount concern for all the people around the world. Consequently, substantial attention has been devoted to the exploration of gas-active materials. MXenes, owing to their abundant surface groups, hydrophilicity, tunable electrical conductivity, and excellent thermal conductivity, have emerged as promising candidates for gas sensing. This comprehensive review delves into the recent progress of MXene-based gas sensors. Firstly, we provide a synopsis of the elemental compositions, structures, properties, and preparation methods of MXenes. Subsequently, we review the applications of MXenes in different gas sensing fields, encompassing ammonia, acetone, toluene, ethanol, and nitrogen oxides. Finally, the existing challenges and potential research directions related to the application of MXenes in gas sensing are discussed. This review aims to elucidate the state of the art of gas sensors based on MXenes and to inspire further exploration of their myriad possibilities in this field.

Abstract:Discriminating structurally similar volatile organic compounds (VOCs) molecules, such as benzene, toluene, and three xylene isomers (BTX), remains a significant challenge, especially, for metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensors, in which selectivity is a long-standing challenge. Recent progress indicates that temperature modulation of a single MOS sensor offers a powerful route in extracting the features of adsorbed gas analytes than conventional isothermal operation. Herein, a rectangular heating waveform is applied on NiO-, WO<sub>3</sub>-, and SnO<sub>2</sub>-based sensors to gradually activate the specific gas/oxide interfacial redox reaction and generate rich (electrical) features of adsorbed BTX molecules. Upon several signal preprocessing steps, the intrinsic feature of BTX molecules can be extracted by the linear discrimination analysis (LDA) or convolutional neural network (CNN) analysis. The combination of three distinct MOS sensors noticeably benefits the recognition accuracy (with a reduced number of training iterations). Finally, a prototype of a smart BTX recognition system (including sensing electronics, sensors, Wi-Fi module, UI, PC, etc.) based on temperature modulation has been explored, which enables a prompt, accurate, and stable identification of xylene isomers in the ambient air background and raises the hope of innovating the future advanced machine olfactory system.

Abstract:With the tremendous advances in technology, gas-sensing devices are being popularly used in many distinct areas, including indoor environments, industries, aviation, and detectors for various toxic domestic gases and vapors. Even though the most popular type of gas sensor, namely, resistive-based gas sensors, have many advantages over other types of gas sensors, their high working temperatures lead to high energy consumption, thereby limiting their practical applications, especially in mobile and portable devices. As possible ways to deal with the high-power consumption of resistance-based sensors, different strategies such as self-heating, MEMS technology, and room-temperature operation using especial morphologies, have been introduced in recent years. In this review, we discuss different types of energy-saving chemisresitive gas sensors including self-heated gas sensors, MEMS based gas sensors, room temperature operated flexible/wearable sensor and their application in the fields of environmental monitoring. At the end, the review will be concluded by providing a summary, challenges, recent trends, and future perspectives.

Abstract:Flexible/wearable gas sensor technology is gaining huge interest in the current era of the Internet of Things for its applications in personal environmental monitoring, healthcare, and safety. In this respect, the resistive gas sensor has received a great deal of attention in the flexible/wearable sensing field owing to its easy read-out mechanism, low power consumption, and simple fabrication with miniaturization. In the last few years, two-dimensional (2D) materials have sparked significant attention in the development of resistive gas sensors on flexible or wearable sensing platforms due to their excellent electrical, physiochemical, and mechanical properties. In this review, recent research advancements in the field of flexible or wearable gas sensors using emerging 2D materials including graphene, transition metal carbides, and nitrides (collectively known as MXenes), phosphorene, and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are discussed. The sensing performance of the flexible/wearable gas sensors are explained in detail with the relation between 2D sensing materials and various substrates (i.e. polymer, textile, and paper). In addition, gas sensing applications of 2D materials-based flexible/wearable resistive sensors are highlighted with current challenges to future perspectives.

Abstract:The gas selectivities of highly ordered mesoporous silicates and commercially-obtained porous silicates with respect to benzene, toluene and xylene were studied. After studying the porosities, pore uniformities, and surface silanol structures of the silicates and their relationships to gas selectivity in detail, we found that we could achieve high benzene selectivity by controlling the micropore size (less than 1 nm). Concluding that mesoporous silicate has a suitable micropore size and structure for benzene selectivity, we also observed that mesoporous silicate SBA-16 exhibited a high (>6) benzene selectivity from toluene and xylene even in a pseudo-atmospheric environment. A benzene detection limit of about 100 ppb was achieved by introducing SBA-16 into a microfluidic device originally developed for the separate detection of benzene, toluene, and xylene gases.

Abstract:ConspectusGas sensors are used in various applications to sense toxic gases, mainly for enhanced safety. Resistive sensors are particularly popular owing to their ability to detect trace amounts of gases, high stability, fast response times, and affordability. Semiconducting metal oxides are commonly employed in the fabrication of resistive gas sensors. However, these sensors often require high working temperatures, bringing about increased energy consumption and reduced selectivity. Furthermore, they do not have enough flexibility, and their performance is significantly decreased under bending, stretching, or twisting. To address these challenges, alternative materials capable of operating at lower temperatures with high flexibility are needed. Two-dimensional (2D) materials such as MXenes and transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) offer high surface area and conductivity owing to their unique 2D structure, making them promising candidates for realization of resistive gas sensors. Nevertheless, their sensing performance in pristine form is typically weak and unacceptable, particularly in terms of response, selectivity, and recovery time (trec). To overcome these drawbacks, several strategies can be employed to enhance their sensing properties. Noble-metal decoration such as (Au, Pt, Pd, Rh, Ag) is a highly promising method, in which the catalytic effects of noble metals as well as formation of potential barriers with MXenes or TMDs eventually contribute to boosted response. Additionally, bimetallic noble metals such as Pt-Pd and Au/Pd with their synergistic properties can further improve sensor performance. Ion implantation is another feasible approach, involving doping of sensing materials with the desired concentration of dopants through control over the energy and dosage of the irradiation ions as well as creation of structural defects such as oxygen vacancies through high-energy ion-beam irradiation, contributing to enhanced sensing capabilities. The formation of core-shell structures is also effective, creating numerous interfaces between core and shell materials that optimize the sensing characteristics. However, the shell thickness needs to be carefully optimized to achieve the best sensing output. To reduce energy consumption, sensors can operate in a self-heating condition where an external voltage is applied to the electrodes, significantly lowering the power requirements. This enables sensors to function in energy-constrained environments, such as remote or low-energy areas. An important advantage of 2D MXenes and TMDs is their high mechanical flexibility. Unlike semiconducting metal oxides that lack mechanical flexibility, MXenes and TMDs can maintain their sensing performance even when integrated onto flexible substrates and subjected to bending, tilting, or stretching. This flexibility makes them ideal for fabricating flexible and portable gas sensors that rigid sensors cannot achieve.

Abstract:Abstract Volatile organic compounds are released by different sources causing air pollution. Moreover, some of these carbon-based organic chemicals are considered as biomarkers in the exhaled breath of individuals and can be used to identify various kinds of diseases. Hence, the increasing demand to control air quality and human health has promoted the development of monitoring systems based on high-performance gas sensing structures. This review highlights the achievements in sensing technologies for the detection of volatile organic compounds. Particularly, chemiresistive gas sensors and detection systems based on the terahertz spectroscopy method are outlined. The progress in research studies is discussed and the potential of both techniques is evaluated considering the current challenges. Afterward, a brief summary is also provided along with the advances and issues for future investigations and the manufacturing of highly sensitive and selective monitoring systems.

Abstract:The identification of an unknown gaseous species or the composition of a gaseous mixture can be performed using various experimental techniques such as: mass spectrometry, chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), infrared (IR), X-Rays, or by combining these analytical techniques (in automated analyzers). Unfortunately, these techniques use highly expensive equipment and require the use of qualified personnel. Using gas sensors is a viable and inexpensive alternative. The most commonly used sensors in the field are resistive type chemosensors (chemiresistors), due to their simple detection mechanism and low manufacturing costs. The detection principle of these sensors is based on the catalytic reaction between the sensitive material of the sensor and the target gas. This reaction occurs with the release or consumption of electrons, influencing the overall electrical resistance of the sensor. This review describes various MOX-based chemiresistors, which contain different types of sensitive substrates, such as powders, pellets or films, as well as a clear tendency towards sensor miniaturization and the constant improvement of the fabrication techniques towards greener and more cost-effective synthesis routes over time. The goal of this research was to obtain sensors with high 3S parameters (sensitivity, selectivity, and stability), that can be mass-produced and implemented on a wide scale.

Abstract:Two kinds of toluene vapor sensors with different sensitive film structures, i.e., multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)-polyethylene oxide (PEO) composite film and MWCNTs-PEO bilayer film were fabricated. Both sensors were obtained by airbrushing the sensitive films on interdigitated electrodes (IDE). Response performances of both sensors to toluene vapor at room temperature were investigated. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used for morphology analysis of the sensitive films. The experimental results showed that sensors with bilayer films revealed a larger sensitivity than that with the composite films. The response and recovery times of both sensors were within 8s. Moreover, sensors with bilayer films exhibited a modest selectivity to toluene vapor. The sensing mechanisms of both sensors were studied as well.
Thermodynamically and Kinetically Enhanced Benzene Vapor Sensor Based on the Cu-TCPP-Cu MOF with Extremely Low Limit of Detection

Abstract:As a carcinogenic and highly neurotoxic hazardous gas, benzene vapor is particularly difficult to be distinguished in BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene) atmosphere and be detected in low concentrations due to its chemical inertness. Herein, we develop a depth-related pore structure in Cu-TCPP-Cu to thermodynamically and kinetically enhance the adsorption of benzene vapor and realize the detection of ultralow-temperature benzene gas. We find that the in-plane π electronic nature and proper pore sizes in Cu-TCPP-Cu can selectively induce the adsorption and diffusion of BTEX. Interestingly, the theoretical calculations (including density functional theory (DFT) and grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations) exhibit that benzene molecules are preferred to adsorb and array as a consecutive arrangement mode in the Cu-TCPP-Cu pore, while the TEX (toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene) dominate the jumping arrangement model. The differences in distribution behaviors can allow adsorption and diffusion of more benzene molecules within limited room. Furthermore, the optimal pore-depth range (60-65 nm) of Cu-TCPP-Cu allows more exposure of active sites and hinders the gas-blocking process. The optimized sensor exhibits ultrahigh sensitivity to benzene vapor (155 Hz/μg@1 ppm), fast response time (less than 10 s), extremely low limit of detection (65 ppb), and excellent selectivity (83%). Our research thus provides a fundamental understanding to design and optimize two-dimensional metal-organic framework (MOF)-based gas sensors.

Abstract:Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) with a two-dimensional (2D) structure and semiconducting features are highly favorable for the production of NH3 gas sensors. Among the TMD family, WS2, WSe2, MoS2, and MoSe2 exhibit high conductivity and a high surface area, along with high availability, reasons for which they are favored in gas-sensing studies. In this review, we have discussed the structure, synthesis, and NH3 sensing characteristics of pristine, decorated, doped, and composite-based WS2, WSe2, MoS2, and MoSe2 gas sensors. Both experimental and theoretical studies are considered. Furthermore, both room temperature and higher temperature gas sensors are discussed. We also emphasized the gas-sensing mechanism. Thus, this review provides a reference for researchers working in the field of 2D TMD gas sensors.

Abstract:The identification and determination of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) has always been a formidable challenge for chemiresistive metal oxide sensors owing to their structural similarity and low reactivity, as well as the intrinsic cross sensitivity of metal oxides. In this paper, a temperature-modulated sensing strategy is proposed for the identification and determination of BTEX using a high-performance chemiresistive sensor. Ultrafine Au nanoparticle-loaded porous ZnO nanobelts as sensing materials were synthesized through an exchange reaction followed by thermal oxidation, which exhibited high response toward BTEX. Under dynamic modulation of working temperature, the distinguishable characteristic curves were demonstrated for each BTEX compound. By employing the linear discrimination and convolutional neural network analyses, highly effective BTEX identification was achieved among all investigated volatile organic compounds, which is difficult to realize for single chemiresistive sensors at constant working temperatures. Furthermore, quantitative analysis of BTEX concentrations was accomplished by establishing the relationship between concentration and response at specific points on their response curves. This developed strategy is expected to pave a new way for constructing highly sensitive gas sensors for the identification and analysis of hazardous gases, thereby enhancing their applicability in environmental monitoring.

Herein, based on QCM (quartz crystal microbalance) platform, MOF-14, a metal-organic framework, is first employed to detect benzene vapor by the host-guest interaction of MOF with benzene molecule, as well as Lewis acid-base interaction. By comparing with other three types of MOF materials, it was found that the effect of the ligand on the adsorption is greater than that of the metal point of junction. On the other hand, the different steric hindrance effects in BTEX restrict their adsorption capacity. Thus, the MOF-14 modified QCM sensor exhibits high sensing performance to benzene vapor with a detection limit at the level of 150 ppb. Our studies also indicate that the sensor shows good selectivity to oppose various kinds of interfering gases. Even toluene has a structure similar to that of benzene, it also can be distinguished. And the measurements on repeatability and long-term stability are both approved for the excellent reliability of the MOF-14 modified QCM sensor. By using computational simulation, we explored that why benzene and toluene can be distinguished by MOF-14 modified QCM sensor. This work extended the usages of MOF based QCM for high performance benzene sensing.
Gadolinium-doped mesoporous tungsten oxides: Rational synthesis, gas sensing performance, and mechanism investigation

Abstract:As a typical family of volatile toxic compounds, benzene derivatives are massive emission in industrial production and the automobile field, causing serious threat to human and environment. The reliable and convenient detection of low concentration benzene derivatives based on intelligent gas sensor is urgent and of great significance for environmental protection. Herein, through heteroatomic doping engineering, rare-earth gadolinium (Gd) doped mesoporous WO 3 with uniform mesopores (15.7–18.1 nm), tunable high specific surface area (52–55 m 2 ·g −1 ), and customized crystalline pore walls, was designed and utilized to fabricate highly sensitive gas sensors toward benzene derivatives, such as ethylbenzene. Thanks to the high-density oxygen vacancies (O V ) and significantly increased defects (W 5+ ) produced by Gd atoms doping into the lattice of WO 3 octahedron, Gd-doped mesoporous WO 3 exhibited excellent ethylbenzene sensing performance, including high response (237 vs. 50 ppm), rapid response—recovery dynamic (13 s/25 s vs. 50 ppm), and extremely low theoretical detection limit of 24 ppb. The in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform and gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry results revealed the gas sensing process underwent a catalytic oxidation conversion of ethylbenzene into alcohol species, benzaldehyde, acetophenone, and carboxylate species along with the resistance change of the Gd-doped mesoporous WO 3 based sensor. Moreover, a portable smart gas sensing module was fabricated and demonstrated for real-time detecting ethylbenzene, which provided new ideas to design heteroatom doped mesoporous materials for intelligent sensors.
