Abstract:As pharmacists attach great significance to geographical origins of herbal medicines, cheap, nondestructive and convenient methods for discriminating herbal medicines originated from diverse regions are much in need. This work proposes a method of using electronic nose to discriminate herbal medicines from different origins. With 5 categories of herbal medicines and 3 to 4 geographical origins for each category, 8 pattern recognition algorithms prove the feasibility of the classification task and SVM, LDA and BP neural network have shown better classification accuracy. Additionally, feature engineering approaches are used to facilitate classification, showing that normalization based on each feature and each sensor and centralization prove to be better normalization approaches for classifiers; a proper degree of noise addition help classifiers get better generalization ability; finally, feature selection with SNR could lead to more efficient classifiers by selecting the most meaningful features and disregarding unnecessary features. This work provides insights for future herbal medicine evaluation based on electronic nose with better combinations of pattern recognition algorithms and feature engineering approaches for optimal classification performances.
A pattern recognition method for electronic noses based on an olfactory neural network

Abstract:Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are generally considered as the most promising pattern recognition method to process the signals from a chemical sensor array of electronic noses, which makes the system more bionics. This paper presents a chaotic neural network entitled KIII, which modeled olfactory systems, applied to an electronic nose to discriminate six typical volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in Chinese rice wines. Thirty-two-dimensional feature vectors of a sensor array consisting of eight sensors, in which four features were extracted from the transient response of each TGS sensor, were input into the KIII network to investigate its generalization capability for concentration influence elimination and sensor drift counteraction. In comparison with the conventional back propagation trained neural network (BP-NN), experimental results show that the KIII network has a good performance in classification of these VOCs of different concentrations and even for the data obtained 1 month later than the training set. Its robust generalization capability is suitable for electronic nose applications to reduce the influence of concentration and sensor drift.

Abstract:Fermentation is a crucial step in the processing of black tea. Currently, the evaluation of the fermentation degree of black tea relies mainly on manual experience, which suffers from subjectivity and lacks quantifiability. This study proposed the fusion of hyperspectral imaging and electronic nose to evaluate the degree of black tea fermentation. The self-developed electronic nose was used to acquire aroma information, while hyperspectral imaging was used to obtain color and spectral information during the fermentation process. The samples were collected at different fermentation time including insufficient, moderate, and excessive fermentation. Then, the classification models were constructed based on individual types of information. Subsequently, the electronic nose data were fused with the hyperspectral data using different information fusion strategies (low-level, middle- level, high-level) and the classification models were built accordingly. Six types of classifiers were established. Results showed that with deeper levels of fusion, the accuracy of the model on the test set gradually improved. In the high-level fusion, the accuracy of the test set reached 100 %, with improvements of 10.34 % and 8.62 % compared with that solely based on electronic nose and hyperspectral imaging, respectively. This indicates that the proposed information fusion method is highly effective, providing state-of-the-art insights into and technologies for the evaluation of black tea fermentation degree.

Abstract:The electronic nose (e-Nose) has more and more promising applications in home healthcare. In this paper, we introduce a portable e-Nose intended to satisfy the home healthcare applications. It employs semiconductor and electrochemical sensors to compose an array in a chamber to conduct breath analysis with pre-concentration and multiple desorption procedures. ON e-Nose II supplies a smart and interactive graphical user interface by a colourful TFT LCD and USB host interface. A package of supporting software on personal computer (PC) is also developed for data acquisition and pattern recognition. The results indicate that using multiple desorption methods, our e-Nose system may distinguish lung benign diseases, like pneumonia and pneumoconiosis, especially, healthy controls and lung cancer patients were separated with high accuracy through the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in breath. Our e-Nose instrument demonstrates excellent potential for assist in quick monitoring of respiratory diseases for family members at home in the near future.
The recognition of Chinese spirits using electronic nose with dynamic method

Abstract:This paper describes a method to recognize Chinese spirits using a gas sensor array being dynamically heated. An FFT and an RBF neural network are employed for dynamic signal extraction and pattern recognition, respectively. Four kinds of SnO2 gas sensors were chosen to build a sensor array for our experiments. Three Chinese spirits, which had similar odors were chosen to be recognized. The response signals were collected while the sensor array was periodically heated. After the FFT was applied on low frequency segment in a specific period, we used RBF neural network to analyze the results for pattern recognition. The recognition rate was 98%.
Bionic Electronic Nose Based on MOS Sensors Array and Machine Learning Algorithms Used for Wine Properties Detection

Abstract:In this study, a portable electronic nose (E-nose) prototype is developed using metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensors to detect odors of different wines. Odor detection facilitates the distinction of wines with different properties, including areas of production, vintage years, fermentation processes, and varietals. Four popular machine learning algorithms-extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), and backpropagation neural network (BPNN)-were used to build identification models for different classification tasks. Experimental results show that BPNN achieved the best performance, with accuracies of 94% and 92.5% in identifying production areas and varietals, respectively; and SVM achieved the best performance in identifying vintages and fermentation processes, with accuracies of 67.3% and 60.5%, respectively. Results demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed E-nose, which could be used to distinguish different wines based on their properties following selection of an optimal algorithm.

Abstract:An electronic nose was used to detect the adulteration of sesame oil with corn oil. In order to reduce the dimension of the data matrix, three different variable selection techniques were employed: PCA, step-LDA and Fisher linear transformation. And then the pattern recognition technique of linear discriminant analysis (LDA) and artificial neural network (ANN) were used to check the effect of the three dimension reduction methods mentioned above. In the process of LDA , the Fisher linear transformation is most effective, the error rate was 0.61%, only 1 sample was misclassified; in the process of ANN, the results obtained using the ten variables selected by step-LDA were more acceptable than others, the 95% individual confidence interval is (-4.71%,3.38%), the mean square of error was 4.75, and the correlation between predicted concentration and genuine concentration is 0.998 08.

Abstract:In this study, a portable electronic nose (E-nose) was self-developed to identify rice wines with different marked agesall the operations of the E-nose were controlled by a special Smartphone Application. The sensor array of the E-nose was comprised of 12 MOS sensors and the obtained response values were transmitted to the Smartphone thorough a wireless communication module. Then, Aliyun worked as a cloud storage platform for the storage of responses and identification models. The measurement of the E-nose was composed of the taste information obtained phase (TIOP) and the aftertaste information obtained phase (AIOP). The area feature data obtained from the TIOP and the feature data obtained from the TIOP-AIOP were applied to identify rice wines by using pattern recognition methods. Principal component analysis (PCA), locally linear embedding (LLE) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) were applied for the classification of those wine samples. LDA based on the area feature data obtained from the TIOP-AIOP proved a powerful tool and showed the best classification results. Partial least-squares regression (PLSR) and support vector machine (SVM) were applied for the predictions of marked ages and SVM (R-2 = 0.9942) worked much better than PLSR.

Abstract:An electronic nose (PEN 2) comprising ten metal oxide semiconductor sensors (W1C, W5S, W3C, W6S, W5C, W1S, W1W, W2S, W2W, W3S) were used to detection of five different stored duration wheats (wheats were harvested from 2000 to 2004, and named as W00, W01, W02, W03, and W04, respectively). A few of sensors were switched-off by multivariate analysis of variance and loading analysis. The responses signals of sensor W5C, W1S, W1W, W2S, W2W and W3S were chose for the pattern recognition. Principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to the signal of optimized sensor array, the five different stored duration of wheat were discriminated well and each group has strong convergence. The results obtained by network I (for optimized sensor array) presented the higher percent of correct classifications in comparison to network II (for original sensor array). The optimization of sensor array can improve the recognition performance of the electronic nose. The results obtained indicated that the electronic nose could discriminate successfully wheat of different age.
Tea Quality Detection Basic on Electronic Nose

Abstract:The electronic nose(e-nose) was applied in the tea quality classification,the volatile components of dry tea leaf,tea beverage and wet tea leaf(the dry tea leaf was brewed up,the water and the wet tea leaf were separated) were detected by the e-nose.The collected data were analyzed by principle components analysis(PCA) in order to reduce data dimension and optimize feature vectors.The linear discrimination analysis(LDA) and BP-neural network were applied in discrimination of different tea quality.The results showed that the results of LDA and BP-neural network were accordant,and only some samples of the tea T60 and the tea T100 were classified incorrectly.The analytical result of the tea beverage was better than those of dry tea leaf and wet tea leaf using the two methods.
Measurement of the LongJing Tea Quality by Using an Electronic Nose

Abstract:An investigation was made to determine the four tea samples with different quality grade by using an electronic nose (e-nose). The response signals of e-nose were analyzed under different sampling conditions by variance analysis and multivariance analysis. Analytical results showed that the different volume of vials and the different collection times have significant effect on the response signals of the e-nose. Then the data were processed using principal components analysis (PCA), linear discrimination analysis (LDA) and artificial neural network (ANN). The results analyzed by LDA were superior to that by PCA, which could distinguish all the tea samples completely. However, PCA method could not estimate sample of A280 correctly. Further 90% correct classification was achieved for all the tea samples using the BP neural network.

Abstract:Detection of tea grade by a human taste panel is affected by external factors and usually inaccurate, but it might be promising to use an electronic nose (E-nose). In this paper an investigation has been made to determine the grade of different tea samples using an E-nose. Feature vectors of the teas with different quality grade (Labeled: T120, T600, T800, T1200 and T1800) were extracted from the E-nose response signals, and the data were processed by using the principle components analysis (PCA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA). Using the average and integrated value of feature vectors, 100% correct classification by LDA was achieved for five different tea samples with different qualities. The results indicated that the E-nose was capable of discriminating different grades of green teas.
Detection of Caffeine in Xinyangmaojian Tea by an Electronic Nose

Abstract:Three different grades of Xinyangmaojian tea were detected by an electronic nose system.The optimization of a gas sensor array consisting of four gas sensors was selected by loading analysis and correlation analysis.Principle component analysis of the data provided by the electronic nose completely distinguished all the tea samples.The principle component regression(PCR),multiple linear regression(MLR),and quadratic polynomial step regression(QPSR)models of the caffeine content of Xinyangmaojian tea were created based on the optimization of gas sensor array and were validated by a prediction set.The correlation coefficient,standard error prediction,and average percent error between the predicted content and the measured content of caffeine of these three models were 0.66,0.32,and 3.42%;0.80,0.19,and 2.8%;and 0.94,0.19,and 2.3%,respectively.The QPSR model was better than the PCR and MLR models.The results show that the electronic nose system can detect the caffeine content of Xinyangmaojian tea.
Tea Quality Evaluation by Applying E-nose Combined with Chemometrics Methods

Abstract:Tea is one of the most popular beverage with distinct flavor consumed worldwide. It is of significance to establish evaluation method for tea quality controlling. In this work, electronic nose (E-nose) was applied to assess tea quality grades by detecting the volatile components of tea leaves and tea infusion samples. The “35th s value”, “70th s value” and “average differential value” were extracted as features from E-nose responding signals. Three data reduction methods including principle component analysis (PCA), multi-dimensional scaling (MDS) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) were introduced to improve the efficiency of E-nose analysis. Logistic regression (LR) and support vector machine (SVM) were applied to set up qualitative classification models. The results indicated that LDA outperformed original data, PCA and MDS in both LR and SVM models. SVM had an advantage over LR in developing classification models. The classification accuracy of SVM based on the data processed by LDA for tea infusion samples was 100%. Quantitative analysis was conducted to predict the contents of volatile compounds in tea samples based on E-nose signals. The prediction results of SVM based on the data processed by LDA for linalool (training set: R 2 = 0.9523; testing set: R 2 = 0.9343), nonanal (training set: R 2 = 0.9617; testing set: R 2 = 0.8980) and geraniol (training set: R 2 = 0.9576; testing set: R 2 = 0.9315) were satisfactory. The research manifested the feasibility of E-nose for qualitatively and quantitatively analyzing tea quality grades.

Abstract:Electronic nose (E-nose), electronic tongue (E-tongue) and electronic eye (E-eye) combined with chemometrics methods were applied for qualitative identification and quantitative prediction of tea quality. Main chemical components, such as amino acids, catechins, polyphenols and caffeine were measured by traditional methods. Feature-level fusion strategy for the integration of the signals was introduced to integrate the E-nose, E-tongue and E-eye signals, aiming at improving the performances of identification and prediction models. Perfect results with an accuracy of 100% were obtained for qualitative identification of tea quality grades, based on fusion signals by support vector machine and random forest. Quantitative models were established for predicting the contents of the chemical components based on independent electronic signals and fusion signals by partial least squares regression, support vector machine and random forest. Random forest based on the fusion signals achieved the best performance in predicting the concentration of those chemical components.

Abstract:This research demonstrates a rapid detection method of jointly using electronic nose (E-nose) and computer vision system (CVS) to detect tea aroma and tea appearance for tea quality identification. Feature-level and decision-level fusion strategies were introduced for analyzing the fusion signals of E-nose and CVS. K-nearest neighbors (KNN), support vector machine (SVM) and multinomial logistic regression (MLR) were applied for classification modelling. The results showed that the decision making based on fusion strategies synergistically integrated the advantages of E-nose and CVS and obtained better performance than independent decision in tea quality identification. The decision-level fusion combining the SVM results of both E-nose and CVS was the most effective strategy with the classification accuracy rates of 100% for training and testing sets. This study manifests the simultaneous utilization of E-nose and CVS combined with the decision-level fusion strategy could be worked as a rapid detection method to identify tea quality.

Abstract:Wheat grain of five storage ages were detected by an electronic nose(PEN2) from Airsense Company in Germany.A few of unremarkable sensors were removed by multivariate variance analysis and Loading analysis.Finally,response signals of sensor 1,2,8,9,10 were chose for pattern recognition.Principal component analysis(PCA) was applied to the signal of optimized sensor array,the five different storage ages of wheat grain were discriminated well and each group had strong convergence.The results obtained by network 1(BP neural network for signals of optimized sensor array) presented higher percentage of correct classifications than that by network 2(BP neural network for signals of original sensor array).So,removing unremarkable sensor signals by optimizing sensor array can improve the recognition performance of electronic nose.

Abstract:The electronic nose was widely used in the food area. A single couldn’t assess the quality of odor because its complexity. The sensors array could resolve this problem. The sensors array was different when different food was identified. The adulterate milk were identified by electronic nose, and the signals were analyzed by variance analysis, PCA (principal component analysis) and clustering analysis. The best sensors array made up of 8 sensors was obtained. The new sensors array was applied to identify the adulterate milk. The data was analyzed by LDA analysis (Linear Discriminant Analysis). The plot of 8-sensor array could distinguish the milk adulterated with powdered milk of different proportion. So the electronic nose with 8-sensor array had the ability of distinguishing the adulterate milk well as electronic nose with the 10-sensor array.

Abstract:As a novelty bionic technology, the electronic nose has attracted attention in detection of food and agricultural by-products. Literatures have been reported in the applications of wine, tea, beverage, grain, oil, meat, dairy, vegetables, fruits and so on, showing a well application prospect in food and agricultural byproducts detection by using electronic nose. With the deepening of relevant researches and constantly emerging of new technologies, the electronic nose technology has also been improved. The emergence of new sensor technologies helps to develop electronic noses with completely novelty mechanisms. A more comprehensive detection could be realized integrating the electronic nose with other analytical instruments. A combination of electronic nose and the wireless communication technology, overcoming the limitation that a traditional electronic nose can not be applied to the on-site and mobile environments, expands the scope of applications of electronic nose. This paper aims at making comprehensive discussions and analyses from these three aspects respectively, then summarizing as a reference for the subsequent researches.

Abstract:This study employed electronic nose (E-nose) to detect tea plants with different types of damage (undamaged, mechanically damaged, damages caused by Ectropis obliqua and Ectropis grisescens). Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry was employed as an auxiliary technique for proving the potential of E-nose detection. A new feature extraction method was applied for obtaining comprehensive features of E-nose dataset. Feature selection method based on principal component analysis (PCA) was applied for further feature selection. Four dimensionality reduction methods [PCA, locality preserving projections (LPP), kernel principal component analysis and locally linear embedding] and three classification algorithms [multilayer perceptron neural network, extreme learning machine and support vector machine (SVM)] were employed, and the best combination of dimensionality reduction method and classification algorithm was determined. The results showed that the combination of LPP and SVM was the best, and its correct discrimination rate was as high as 100%, which proved the advantage of the new signal processing method and the feasibility of E-nose in discriminating among tea plants with different types of damage.
