Abstract:Fracture behaves as one of the most fundamental issues for solid materials. As a one-atom-thick crystal, many aspects in fracture mechanics of graphene are of high significance, such as the crack propagation and its fracture toughness. Here we present a method to study the fracture characteristics of graphene using Raman spectroscopy and designed chemical-vapor-deposited monolayer graphene with preset cracks. The dynamic fracture process of graphene was experimentally observed, and its fracture toughness was obtained using Griffith's criterion based on the strain distribution derived from the frequency shifts of Raman bands. The fracture toughness of Kc = 6.1 ± 0.6 MPa[Formula: see text] and Gc = 37.4 ± 6.7 J/m2 are comparable with the previously reported theoretical and experimental values, and we believe that this simple and easy-to-operate approach of characterizing the fracture of graphene using Raman spectroscopy can also be extended to other two-dimensional materials.
A New Sequential Multiscale Model for Interface Failure of Graphene Reinforced Epoxy Nanocomposites Based on MD and SBFEM

Abstract:This study develops a sequential multiscale model to investigate the interface failure of graphene-reinforced epoxy nanocomposites. The molecular dynamics simulations are carried out to track the graphene-epoxy interface behavior through normal opening and tangential sliding modes modeling at nanoscale. Four kinds of functional groups on the graphene including –OH, –NH2, –CH3 and –COOH are considered. The traction-separation law in the normal direction and the shear-lag model in the tangential direction are used to mimic the interface behavior. Furthermore, the scaled boundary finite element method in collaboration with a new hybrid quadtree algorithm is used to discretize the nanocomposite representative volume element at microscale. In addition to the functional group types, the volume fraction and aspect ratio of the graphene nanoplatelets are taken into account in the microscale simulation. The results show that the addition of functional groups to graphene can greatly improve the load-bearing capacity of the interface between nanoplatelets and epoxy resin. Meanwhile, the reinforcement effect of nanoplatelets is related to their aspect ratio and volume fraction. The efficiency and accuracy of the proposed model are validated by comparing the results with traditional finite element method. This study provides a theoretical support and guidance for the design and fabrication of graphene reinforced nanocomposites.

Abstract:Graphene has been reported with record-breaking properties which have opened up huge potential applications. A considerable research has been devoted to manipulate or modify the properties of graphene to target a more smart nanoscale device. Graphene and carbon nanotube hybrid structure (GNHS) is one of the promising graphene derivative, whose mechanical properties have been rarely discussed in literature. Therefore, the mechanical properties of GNHS is studied in this paper based on the large-scale molecular dynamics simulation. The target GNHS is constructed by considering two separate graphene layers that are being connected by single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) according to the experimental observations. It is found that the GNHSs exhibit much lower yield strength, Young's modulus, and earlier yielding compared to bilayer graphene sheet. Fracture of GNHSs is found to initiate at the connecting region between carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene. After failure, monatomic chains are normally observed at the front of the failure region, and the two graphene layers at the failure region without connecting CNTs will adhere to each other, generating a bilayer graphene sheet scheme (with a layer distance about 3.4 Å). This study will enrich the current understanding of the mechanical performance of GNHS, which will guide the design of GNHS and shed light on its various applications.
Definitive engineering strength and fracture toughness of graphene through on-chip nanomechanics

Abstract:Fail-safe design of devices requires robust integrity assessment procedures which are still absent for 2D materials, hence affecting transfer to applications. Here, a combined on-chip tension and cracking method, and associated data reduction scheme have been developed to determine the fracture toughness and strength of monolayer-monodomain-freestanding graphene. Myriads of specimens are generated providing statistical data. The crack arrest tests provide a definitive fracture toughness of 4.4 MPa m . Tension on-chip provides Young's modulus of 950 GPa, fracture strain of 11%, and tensile strength up to 110 GPa, reaching a record of stored elastic energy ~6 GJ m-3 as confirmed by thermodynamics and quantized fracture mechanics. A ~ 1.4 nm crack size is often found responsible for graphene failure, connected to 5-7 pair defects. Micron-sized graphene membranes and smaller can be produced defect-free, and design rules can be based on 110 GPa strength. For larger areas, a fail-safe design should be based on a maximum 57 GPa strength.

Abstract:In this paper the mechanical properties of a series of hydrogen functionalized graphyne are investigated through acting tensile loads on the monolayer networks. Molecular dynamics simulations are performed to calculate the fracture strains and corresponding maximum forces for pristine graphyne along both armchair and zigzag directions. Furthermore, hydrogen functionalized graphynes with different functionalization sites are analyzed to investigate the effect of functionlization on the mechanical performance. Finally, Young's modulus of all the investigated architectures are computed. The obtained results show that monolayer graphyne is mechanically stable with high strength and stiffness, and the mechanical performance can be tuned through structure engineering and functionalization.

Abstract:We report the comparative in situ fracture toughness testing on single-edge V/U-notched multilayer graphenes and boronitrenes in a high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM). The nanostructures of notch tips and fracture edges of the tested specimens are unambiguously resolved using HRTEM. By analyzing the notch tip stresses using finite element method, the fracture toughness of multilayer graphenes and boronitrenes is determined to be 12.0 +/- 3.9 and 5.5 +/- 0.7 MPa root m, respectively, taking into account the notch tip blunting effects.

Abstract:The two-dimensional nature of graphene offers a number of interesting mechanical properties. Amongst these, fracture toughness has received substantial interest, yet computational works have not reached a consensus regarding anisotropy in its fracture energy when graphene is loaded in armchair or zigzag directions. Here, we resolve the steps involved during fracture of graphene by carrying out in situ tensile tests. Embryo cracks nucleated from the graphene edges are observed to deflect into major cracks with local kinking features, as explained by an evolving stress intensity factor during crack advance. Extended finite element analysis with the maximum energy release rate criterion is used to model the fracture process. We determine a weak degree of anisotropy in the fracture toughness, G c(armchair) / G c(zigzag) , of 0.94, which aligns with previous predictions from first-principles calculations and observed growth kinetics of graphene crystals in experiments.
In situ tensile fracturing of multilayer graphene nanosheets for their in-plane mechanical properties

Abstract:The excellent mechanical properties of single- and few-layer graphene have been well-quantified and evidenced by computational methods and local indentation measurements. However, there are less experimental reports on the in-plane mechanical properties of multilayer graphene sheets, despite many practical applications in flexible electronic and energy devices (e.g. graphene flexible electronic display, battery, and storage devices) are actually based on these thicker nanosheets. Here, in-plane fracture behaviors of multilayer graphene nanosheets with thicknesses between ∼10 and 300 nm (∼10-1000 layers) are characterized and quantified by in situ scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy under tensile loading. We found that, generally, the fracture strengths of graphene nanosheets decrease as the thickness (or layers) increases; however, the fracture strain of thinner graphene sheets is less than that of thicker sheets. The fracture process of the thicker nanosheets includes the initial flattened stage, the stable elastic stage, and the rapid fracture with brittle characteristics, while the thinner nanosheets show obvious delamination between the atomic layers at fracture. This work provides critical experimental insights into the tensile fracture behavior of multilayer two-dimensional materials and a better understanding on their realistic mechanical performance for potential flexible device and composite applications.

Abstract:Understanding the fracture properties of graphene sheets is a crucial step towards their practical applications. However, due to the limitations of experimental operations and all-atom (AA) methods, investigating the fracture of large-sized nano graphene sheets remains a formidable challenge. Especially, study on the layer-by-layer fracture of multi-layer graphene sheets (MLGS) is nearly impossible. To overcome this challenge, a peridynamic (PD) model is proposed in this study, which comprises the intra-layer part and the inter-layer part. The proposed PD model is validated by comparing the fracture toughness and the fracture forms of MLGS with existing experiments. It is found that the uniaxial tensile stress-strain curve of pre-cracked MLGS is closely related to the number of graphene layers in MLGS. The fracture property of MLGS can be enhanced by increasing the number of graphene layers, reducing the pre-crack length and blunting the pre-crack tip. Notably, asynchronous crack propagation with independent path observed in MLGS is a unique mechanism for strengthening the fracture property, which is distinct from monolayer graphene sheet. In this work, the PD theory is extended for the first time to investigate the in-plane fracture of large-sized nano MLGS.

Abstract:Fracture is one of the most prominent concerns for large scale applications of graphene. In this paper, we review some of the recent progresses in experimental and theoretical studies on the fracture behaviors of graphene, with discussions touching theoretical strength, mode I fracture toughness, mixed mode fracture, chemical fracture, irradiation fracture, dynamic fracture, impact fracture, and sonication fracture. In spite of rapid developments in experiments and simulations, there are still significant yet unresolved issues related to the fracture of graphene, examples including: (1) Can one enhance the toughness of graphene with designed topological defects? (2) How does grain size affect the strength of polycrystalline graphene? (3) How do the out-of-plane effects (e.g., wrinkle caused by external loading or curvature induced by topological defects) influence the fracture of graphene? (4) Can one develop a continuum model with the ability to capture graphene fracture with complicated modes, such as shear fracture coupled with wrinkling deformation and tear fracture? (5) How does fracture occur when tearing a polycrystalline graphene sheet? (6) Can one control the fracture behavior of graphene by combing the chemical, irradiation and stress effect? (7) How fast can cracks propagate in graphene? (8) What is the behavior of interfacial cracks in graphene, i.e., cracks along the grain boundaries or interfaces of heterogeneous structures? (9) How does a multilayer graphene membrane break under high speed impact and why such structures can absorb a large amount of kinetic energy? (10) Can one tailor/design the graphene structures with controlled fracture? The intention here is not to provide complete answers to such questions, but to draw attention from the mechanics community to them as potential research topics.
Fracture Toughness Characteristics of Stacked Bilayer Graphene via Far-Field Displacement Measurements

Abstract:Mechanical properties of graphene, e.g., strength, modulus, and fracture toughness are extremely sensitive to flaws. Here the fracture properties of stacked bilayer graphene sheets (SBLG) are reported, obtained via stacking two individually grown graphene sheets. The SBLG is presented here as a building block for flaw-resilient nanomaterials. The fracture properties of freestanding SBLG sheets, suspended on transmission electron microscope (TEM) grids, are characterized by stretching the TEM grid inside an scanning electron microscope (SEM) chamber and monitoring the local displacements in real-time. The fracture toughness is measured and expressed as a function of the critical displacement required to propagate existing cracks in the experiment via computational models. This approach decouples force and displacements measurements, and utilizes the known elastic modulus along with the known displacement boundary conditions at the onset of crack growth to estimate the far field force and stress. This strategy represents a breakthrough in nanoscale fracture mechanics for statistical analysis and high throughput experimens on multiple samples at a time. Results demonstrate that the SBLG is markedly tougher than as-grown single or multilayer graphene, with a mode I fracture toughness of ≈28.06 ± 7.5 MPa m $\sqrt m $ . The mechanisms leading to a higher toughness of SBLG are also analyzed and discussed.

Abstract:Carbon-based hybrid nanostructures are believed to entail certain advantages of their parent low-dimensional materials and would serve as building blocks to bridge the nanoscale geometry to the large-scale application requirements. Fullerene, carbon nanotubes and graphene are suggested as ideal 'building blocks' for this kind of bottom-up strategy. In this work a series of hybrid graphene/fullerene architectures, termed graphene nanobuds, are constructed by attaching or fusing C-60 molecules on a defect graphene sheet and the mechanical properties are investigated through molecular dynamics simulations. The elastic moduli are observed to degrade by a certain amount but are still rather high. The obtained Young's moduli are of several hundred GPas and the tensile strengths are above 50 GPa. Furthermore, the intriguing feature of the nearly linear stress-strain response could attract intense follow-up investigations and could be utilized in various application branches such as position sensing.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate, by molecular dynamics simulations, the mechanical properties of a new carbon nanostructure, termed a graphene nanochain, constructed by sewing up pristine or twisted graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) and interlocking the obtained nanorings. The obtained tensile strength of defect-free nanochain is a little lower than that of pristine GNRs and the fracture point is earlier than that of the GNRs. The effects of length, width and twist angle of the constituent GNRs on the mechanical performance are analyzed. Furthermore, defect effect is investigated and in some high defect coverage cases, an interesting mechanical strengthening-like behavior is observed. This structure supports the concept of long-cable manufacturing and advanced material design can be achieved by integration of nanochain with other nanocomposites. The technology used to construct the nanochain is experimentally feasible, inspired by the recent demonstrations of atomically precise fabrications of GNRs with complex structures [Phys. Rev. Lett., 2009, 102, 205501; Nano Lett., 2010, 10, 4328; Nature, 2010, 466, 470].

Abstract:Unidirectional carbon fiber-reinforced composites are widely applied in aeronautical and astronautical structures. However, the weak interlaminar toughness makes composite structures easily being damaged under the low energy impact. Improving composite interlaminar toughness without increasing thickness becomes possible as the carbon nanotubes(CNTs) and graphene possess superstrong-mechanical property and nanoscale. This paper focuses on enhancing the mode I fracture toughness by adding two nano materials of multi-walled carbon nanotubes(MWCNTs) and multi-layers graphene(mG) into interlaminar surface. MWCNTs and mG are sprayed on the central two plies interlaminar surface at the same density 1 g/m2. Double cantilever beam(DCB) standard test is used to investigate the mode I energy release rate with different toughening strategies. Increasing proportion of the mean fracture toughness of crack propagation are 12.3% (MWCNTs) and 101.4% (mG) respectively. According to SEM analysis, the horizontal multi-layers graphene surface peeling and the vertical pull out mechanisms improve the crack growing resistance and result in large amount of fiber breakage and bridging. It is also revealed that the multi-layers graphene relatively-larger surface area compared with MWCNTs makes the interlaminar fracture toughness increasing remarkably. Based on finite element method(FEM) of continuum damage mechanics, the original and mG toughened specimen under DCB mode I fracture are modeled and analyzed. The simulation and experiment are in good agreement.

Multimodal and Self-Healable Interfaces Enable Strong and Tough Graphene-Derived Materials

Abstract:Recent studies have shown that graphene-derived materials not only feature outstanding multifunctional properties, but also act as model materials to implant nanoscale structural engineering insights into their macroscopic performance optimization. In this work, we explore strengthening and toughening strategies of this class of materials by introducing multimodal crosslinks, including long, strong and short, self-healable ones. We identify two failure modes by fracturing functionalized graphene sheets or their crosslinks, and the role of brick-and-mortar hierarchy in mechanical enhancement. Theoretical analysis and atomistic simulation results show that multimodal crosslinks synergistically transfer tensile load to enhance the strength, whereas reversible rupture and formation of healable crosslinks improve the toughness. These findings lay the ground for future development of high-performance paper-, fiber- or film-like macroscopic materials from low-dimensional structures with engineerable interfaces.

Abstract:Perfect graphene is believed to be one of the strongest materials, yet its resistance to fracture is much less impressive. The modest fracture toughness is thought to be related to the general brittle nature in the fracture process of graphene and its two-dimensional (2D) analogous. The brittleness also makes it extremely difficult to assess mechanical properties of 2D materials. The introduction of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into bulk materials has proven to be a widely accepted method for toughening and strengthening materials. To date, such toughening effect of CNTs on 2D materials is largely unknown. A unique material, rebar graphene, has been synthesized that consists of CNTs embedded in graphene. In this study, by implementing a "dry" transfer technique, the freely suspended rebar graphene was systematically tested under uniaxial tension mode inside a scanning electron microscope. Our combined experiments and molecular dynamics simulations confirm that the embedded CNTs divert and bridge the propagating crack and provide a toughening mechanism for the material. Our work identifies a promising extrinsic toughening strategy for 2D materials and provides mechanistic insights into the fracture process of graphene hybrid material.

Abstract:A novel multiscale simulation framework was proposed to investigate the mechanical properties of single layer graphene platelets reinforced crosslinked epoxy. Crosslinking reactions in composites were simulated with the molecular dynamics (MD) method in the nanoscale, and the mechanical properties of bulk epoxy and interfaces between unfunctionalized graphene and epoxy were obtained. These mechanical properties from MD method were used in FEM simulation in the microscale. The crack propagation in composites was investigated with the finite element method (FEM) based phase-field method (PFM). The influence of several morphologic factors of graphene platelets on mechanical properties, including volume fractions, distributions of graphene orientations and waviness of graphene, was investigated. Results showed that the increasing graphene volume fraction would lead to the decrease of mechanical properties of composites due to the weak interfacial strength in the present model. Meanwhile, aligned graphene platelets improve all the mechanical properties simultaneously. In addition, the graphene platelets with higher curvatures provide improvement of the overall mechanical properties of the composites because they can block interfacial sliding. The present research suggested that the interfacial strength can be the bottleneck in the graphene reinforced epoxy.

Fracture Behavior of Graphene Mounted on Stretchable Substrate

Abstract:The fracture behavior of graphene monolayer with the substrate binding effect can be investigated by the indentation response of graphene/poly-dimethylsiloxane (PDMS) nanocomposite (graphene monolayer mounted on super-soft substrate-PDMS) performed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The nonlinear elastic constant of graphene is predicted by the reverse analysis of the experimental results using finite element method (FEM), based on which the intrinsic strength of graphene monolayer is evaluated as 37.6 N/m (corresponding to 112 GPa) and the corresponding strain is -0.23. It is found that the fracture stress of graphene is essentially not sensitive to the substrate binding, effect (-10% lower than their freestanding counterpart). On the basis of FEM, the deformation of graphene in graphene/PDMS under indentation is very similar to that of graphene in free-standing indentation, and the main strain of graphene is not transferred by the graphene/substrate interface but directly applied by the indentation load, which creates a very low deformation mismatch across the interface (or a very low interface stress). Therefore, there is no sliding/debonding occurrence for the graphene/PDMS interface in the indentation tests till the failure of graphene. Abstract:Fracture behaviors of brittle materials are a crucial problem when it comes to reliability, especially for nanoscale devices and systems such as those built based on graphene. This study aims to use a new deep learning model, successfully incorporating data from molecular-level modeling, to predict the fracture path of graphene under the presence of various defects. In the process to build the model we first perform tensile test simulations on various graphene systems using molecular dynamics. The results are then transferred into image-based data for processing in the deep learning model. Based on this dataset we then construct multiple ConvLSTM-based models to learn the spatial-temporal information about crack propagation for each graphene system, respectively. The results show that our ConvLSTM-based models can predict the fracture path of graphene with 99 percent accuracy on a system of different crystallinity and 98 percent accuracy on different sets of defects, demonstrating excellent generalizability and transferability. These models demonstrate the power of exploiting deep learning for nanoengineering, and to specifically confer desired properties of materials based on defect engineering, which has great potential for next-generation materials by design.

Abstract:Graphene (Gr) has ultra-high intrinsic strength and elastic modulus, but it is fragile and has low fracture toughness. It is extremely difficult to evaluate the mechanical properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials because of brittleness. Contrary to expectation, a high fracture toughness of 2D hybrid materials with effective crack deflection is therefore established here by regularly integrating carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Our combined finite element theory and molecular dynamics simulations confirm that embedded CNTs divert and bridge the propagating crack and provide a different toughening effect for the different region of 2D hybrid material. "Toughening zone effect" explain the asymmetric edge elastic properties at the crack tip and edge swapping during crack propagation. The preparation of 2D hybrid materials with CNTs opens up a new idea for other 2D materials, and can be mechanically customized according to the application requirements of its flexible equipment.
