Abstract:The conception of experiential learning is an established approach in the tradition of adult education theory. David Kolb's four-stage model of experiential learning is a fundamental presentation of the approach. In his work Experiential Learning, Kolb states that John Dewey, Kurt Lewin and Jean Piaget are the founders of the approach. The article discusses Kolb's eclectic method of constructing his model of experiential learning. It studies how Kolb introduces and uses the Lewinian tradition of action research and the work of John Dewey to substantiate his model. It is concluded that Kolb generalizes a historically very specific and unilateral mode of experience- feedback session in T-group training- into a general model of learning. Kolb's interpretation of John Dewey's ideas is compared to Dewey's concepts of reflective thought and action. It is concluded that Kolb gives an inadequate interpretation of Dewey's thought and that the very concept of immediate, concrete experience proposed by the experiential learning approach is epistemologically problematic. The theory historical approach of the article discusses both substantial questions related to experiential learning and the way concepts are appropriated, developed and used within adult education theory.

Abstract:In this article, the work of John Dewey is recontextualised and proposed as a basis for contemporary early childhood education for sustainability (ECEfS). Five key themes are explored: experiential learning; curiosity and critical thinking; children’s experiences in nature; democracy and participation and classroom as community. In each case, claims are made through aligning the work of Dewey with exemplars from current early childhood practice. The focus is reflection upon the educator as facilitator of dynamic interactions between the learner and her/his experiences, fostering individual growth, influencing social change and, thus, creating possibilities for implementation of ECEfS within early years classrooms.

Abstract:This study explores the role of John Dewey’s educational philosophy before and after World War I. Before World War I, Dewey’s educational philosophy emphasized individualized and socialized development for learners, importance of children’s education, and encouragement of diverse and creative educational measures. Although these views did not change significantly after World War I, Dewey reflected on the connection between education and social life to allow teachers to fulfill their social responsibilities and to integrate various social issues into teaching regimes to inspire children and create a habit of exploring experience. This study concludes that a democratic education allows children to participate in the problem–solving process, that continuous use of real social issues enhances democratic literacy for children, and that the quality of children’s education depends on teachers’ commitment to social responsibility.

Abstract:Abstract This article begins with a brief comparative analysis of John Dewey’s pragmatic naturalism and several prominent themes from Zen and Confucianism often associated with Dewey. These conceptual themes are then used to examine the combined influence of Dewey and Eastern philosophy on two leading 20th Century American avant-garde artists, John Cage and Allan Kaprow. It is then argued that the work of these artists suggests avenues for cultural enrichment and personal growth and renewal through the arts that reject the dualistic and reductionist premises of Western liberal individualism and its excesses; the disembodied and detached subject of Descartes; the invariant “true” or essential self of Plato; de-situated and compartmentalized views of human experience; and the supposition that the arts are superfluous adornments to the more practical affairs of daily living, all of which tend to disrupt democratic forms of life but remain commonplace in prevailing sociocultural norms and institutional practices (including formal schooling) in the U.S.

Abstract:"Experience" is so central to Dewey's philosophy that one must, first of all, understand what he means by the term. Diverging from the traditional conception of experience, Dewey's understanding involves two dimensions, namely, naturalism and historicism; in this, it can be seen as the unification of Darwinism and Hegelianism. Without attending to its dimension of naturalism, one would ignore experience's basic character, namely that of receptivity, while without attending to the aspect of historicism, one would ignore experience's dimension of meaning, its character of spontaneity. Dewey's notion of experience is unique. Its true value can be seen more clearly in comparison with the conceptions of experience advanced by Quine and McDowell.

Abstract:This paper utilises selective writings by John Dewey and Maurice Merleau-Ponty as the conceptual basis for considering how an enhanced synergistic focus on habit and embodiment could support practice gains in schools. The paper focuses on Dewey's belief that established habits can help students to incorporate experiences into evaluations of educational progress and Merleau-Ponty's spotlight on the body-subject, and how it provides a holistic way of conceiving relations that avoid over privileging abstraction and cognition and under-representing the centrality of the body in human experience. We then evaluate the role of language and reflection in relation to habit, embodiment, and education before discussing some of the general educational practice considerations which might improve the quality of students learning experiences. In conclusion, we consider the possibilities for Dewey's pragmatism to function as a theoretical bridge to Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology of perception and the nature of experience. We argue that while it is important to recognise points of difference, in relation to philosophical treatments of habit and embodiment, it is also important to consider the overlap and new connections between Merleau-Ponty and Dewey which are valuable to take forward in contemporary education.

Abstract:John Dewey has had a profound influence on education in America. His indelible mark on progressive education is still infused within American higher education to this present day and will likely continue to influence this system in the future. This paper illustrates Dewey’s contributions to tertiary education in the United States by reviewing his various motivations and philosophies for marshaling progressive education while keeping in mind market forces. Although many argue that progressive education permanently transformed the higher education landscape for the better, this paper also illustrates multiple critiques of this unique way of learning.

Abstract:Dewey's vision for schooling can perhaps be described as an early positive education, a term now attributed to programmes derived from positive psychology. Positive psychology's goals for education share many of Dewey's ideas about community-mindedness and the role of education in nurturing citizenship. Having emerged from positive psychology, however, current programmes under the umbrella of positive education differ in that they are grounded in science rather than philosophy and are sometimes criticised for being morally neutral and individualistic. In this paper, we argue that the work of Dewey may address these challenges by contributing an understanding of the pragmatic connection between philosophy and psychology, as well as a more social view of education through occupations.

Abstract:Dewey’s educational thought was not given due attentions in Germany until the end of the 20th century.In the period of German Empire,although Gurlitt and Kerschensteiner have used Dewey’s i-deas,they mainly translated and interpreted his thought from a nationalistic standpoint.During the period of Weimar Republic,the democratic spirits advocated by the new government and Hylla’s translation of Democracy and Education promoted German reception of Dewey’s thought.Some educators even trans-formed Dewey’s ideas into practice in their school reforms.However,Dewey’s educational ideas did not have a visible influence on German school practice,and were even misused,ignored and devalued during this period,leading to a long-term misunderstanding of Dewey in Germany.To explore its reason,the concept of “languages of education”put forward by educational historian Tr?hler was used as a research in-strument.The finding shows that this phenomenon was mainly caused by the conflicts between Gei-steswissenchaft P?dagogik informed by the language of Bildung that dominated the Germany then and the German understanding of Dewey’s democratic thought.

Abstract:In the literature on citizenship education, frequent references are made to Dewey. However, educationalists do not always interpret him correctly. To provide some counterbalance, I explain Dewey’s views on education and democracy. I base this, not only on ‘ Democracy and Education’, but also on 17 articles that Dewey wrote after ‘ Democracy and Education’, and on his ‘ Ethics’ and two earlier works, frequently cited by educationalists: ‘ Ethical Principles Underlying Education’ and ‘ School and Society’. According to Dewey, democracy and education are two sides of the same coin. Both involve and foster self-determination, self-development and participating in the common good, enlightened by intelligent understanding and scientific spirit. At the present, it is customary to define democratic citizenship education primarily in terms of social and moral learning, sometimes as though it can be distinguished from academic learning, as something extra besides learning subject matter. When such an approach is attributed to Dewey, as it often is, this is unwarranted.

Abstract:This article compares the educational thought of John Dewey and Confucius on the nature of and relationship between subject matter and the learner. There is a common perception in the existing literature and discourse that Dewey advocates child- or learner-centred education whereas Confucius privileges subject matter via textual transmission. Challenging such a view, this article argues that both Dewey and Confucius reject an ‘either subject matter or learner’ thinking that recognises no intermediate possibilities in between. Instead, both thinkers emphasise the importance of both subject matter and the learner, and maintain that educators need to direct learning by integrating appropriate content into the learner’s total experience. The article concludes by highlighting the contemporary relevance and educational implications of the views of Dewey and Confucius for the current trend to promote ‘student-centred education’.

Abstract:Only a few years following the publication of Democracy and Education, from May 1919 to July 1921, John Dewey traveled and lectured in China. He arrived an already famous American psychologist, philosopher, and educator; but over the course of the years after his departure, that fame diminished, turning to infamy in the 1950s and 1960s, only to be somewhat restored in recent decades. The changing attitudes of the Chinese to Dewey and his ideas are associated with the changing, and often tumultuous, cultural and political context for education in China from the time of his visit through the following century. Hu Shi and Tao Xingzhi, PhD students of Dewey at Columbia University, were prominent Chinese educators who adapted Dewey's educational concepts to the Chinese environment, and their work continues to influence educational debate in China today. While there is desire among many contemporary educators for educational reforms that would be in line with Dewey's principles, there are equal or greater pressures for maintaining systems focused on examinations and memorization.

Abstract:ABSTRACT According to John Dewey, education is a process of forming fundamental fundamental abilities, both concerning thinking (intellectually) and feeling power (emotionally), leading to human and ordinary human nature. Education as a rearrangement or reconstruction of various experiences and events experienced in an individual's life so that everything new becomes more focused and meaningful. John Dewey adheres to pragmatism. That is, the educational process is only about ideas that can be put into practice that are correct and useful. Ideas that exist only in ideas are also indecisive about the reality of sense objects, they are nonsense to pragmatism. The philosophy of thinking about education is reflective thinking, which is a way of thinking that starts from the problems that are faced with it to be solved. According to John Dewey, learning should be focused on practice and trial and error. Humans must be active, full of interest, and ready to explore. Therefore education must be restructured not only as preparation for maturity, but education as a continuation of the growth of the mind and the continuation of life light. Education is directed at social efficiency by providing the ability to participate in activities for the fulfillment of common interests and welfare freely and maximally. John Dewey criticized a lot of traditional education patterns, namely education patterns that make children the object of education, not the subject of education. He does not agree with the concept of traditional education, which states that the focus of education is outside children, whether it be teachers, books, infrastructure, or others. Because the concept of traditional education makes school a formal place for listening, for mass instruction, and separate from life. Traditional education patterns will not be able to see children as living things that grow in their own experiences and then develop them in an environment in accordance with their basic potential. Therefore education needs to be organized in a democratic manner. All adult students are encouraged to participate in shaping the values that govern life together. The science of education cannot be separated from philosophy, that the purpose and aim of the school is to generate a democratic attitude to life and to develop it.

Abstract:Provided that the mission of Dewey's philosophy is animadverting on dualism,resuming continuity,and vindicating itself as the aim,as for Dewey,due to the likelihood of continuity and integrality of experience caused by modern scientific revolution,the modern mission of educational philosophy is orientated to criticize the duality-abruption of education in autarchy,renew the continuity and integrality of educational experience,and realize the instructive and democratic life style which itself is the aim.In the sense,Dewey's educational philosophy is just democratic educational philosophy.Education that criticizes autarchy and guards democracy is the start-point and end-result of Dewey's philosophy.

Abstract:John Dewey's lifelong quest for a worthy education was characterized by a fervor for collapsing false dualisms. One such dualism — that between traditional and progressive education — led him to embrace a vision of the teacher as interpreter and guide of the student. Notwithstanding Dewey's emphasis on the salient role of interpretation, there are no comprehensive accounts that explain how Dewey envisioned this very interpretive task that teachers are expected to undertake. In response to this lack, A. C. Nikolaidis draws from the corpus of Dewey's work to reconstruct a Deweyan “theory of interpretation.” This theory brings together hermeneutic elements in Dewey's work — akin to those of Hans‐Georg Gadamer — and his commitment to scientific experimentalism. In doing so, it presents a new perspective on the way we think of Dewey's relation to Continental philosophy, extending similar contemporary scholarship such as Paul Fairfield's. Moreover, it provides important insights on Dewey's pedagogy as this relates to classroom practices, curriculum development, and more.

Abstract:This article examines how Modern theories of mind remain even in some materialistic and hence ontologically anti-dualistic views; and shows how Dewey, anticipating Merleau-Ponty and 4E cognitive scientists, repudiates these theories. Throughout I place Dewey’s thought in the context of scientific inquiry, both recent and historical and including the cognitive as well as traditional sciences; and I show how he incorporated sciences of his day into his thought, while also anticipating enactive cognitive science. While emphasizing Dewey’s continued relevance, my main goal is to show how his scientifically informed account of perception and cognition combats skepticism propagated by certain scientific visions, exacerbated by commonplace notions about mind, that jointly suggest that human beings lack genuine access to reality.

Abstract:Many modern discussions on Vocational education and Training (VET) only consider it's goals in terms of the labor market or social inclusion. This article argues that vocations are an important contribution to the common good of society as whole, and not only a method of securing laborers. In order to acknowledge this contribution there needs to be a reorientation on VET from an educational perspective first and foremost. In order to do this, this article revisits a public debate John Dewey had with two early educational reformers David Snedden and Charles Prosser in the early twentieth century. In this debate, the economic arguments used by Snedden and Prosser, which have found their echoes in the modern VET debates were opposed to the educational arguments of Dewey. This article wishes to show the significant educational nature of Dewey's counter arguments and argue for the relevance of this approach in the modern VET discussion.
