Abstract:Motivated by the recent first-principle discovery of giant perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) in Fe/III–V nitride thin films, we theoretically study magnetic crystalline anisotropy(MCA) in a series of lattices with trigonal symmetry. Due to the trigonal crystal field, MCA in these lattices is dominated by first-order perturbation of the spin–orbit coupling (SOC) in the atomic limit, instead of second-order in conventional transition metal materials. In particular, the proportionality between MCA and SOC is robust in Kagome and pyrochlore lattices due to the flat bands therein. While in triangle lattice the second-order relation is restored under the bandwidth effect. These findings give rise to a new understanding of magnetic anisotropy and provide a guide for the future hunting of high PMA materials.

Abstract:The perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) arising at the interface between ferromagnetic transition metals and metallic oxides are investigated via first-principles calculations. In this work very large values of PMA up to 3 erg/cm$^2$ at Fe$|$MgO interfaces are reported in agreement with recent experiments. The origin of PMA is attributed to overlap between O-$p_z$ and transition metal $d_{z^2}$ orbitals hybridized with $d_{xz(yz)}$ orbitals with stronger spin-orbit coupling induced splitting around the Fermi level for perpendicular magnetization orientation. Furthemore, it is shown that the PMA value weakens in case of over- or underoxidation when oxygen $p_z$ and transition metal $d_{z^2}$ orbitals overlap is strongly affected by disorder, in agreement with experimental observations in magnetic tunnel junctions.

Abstract:Phenomena originated from spin-orbit interaction, such as magnetic anisotropy (MA), Rashba-type interactions, or topological insulators, have drawn huge attention for its intriguing physics. In particular, the search for a novel antiferromagnetic material, with potentially large perpendicular MA (PMA), has been becoming very intensive for next-generation high density memory applications. Here, we propose that substitutions of transition metals Ru and Ir, neighboring and same group elements in the periodic table, for the Rh site in the vicinity of surface can induce a substantially large PMA, up to an order of magnitude of 20 erg/cm2, in FeRh films on MgO. The main driving mechanism for this huge PMA is the interplay between the dxy and dx2-y2 states of strong spin-orbit 4d and 5d orbitals. Further investigations demonstrate that magnetization direction of PMA undergoes a transition into an in-plane magnetization at the antiferromagnetic-to-ferromagnetic phase transition, which provides a viable route for achieving large and switchable PMA associated with the magnetic-phase transition in antiferromagnetic spintronics.

Anatomy of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in Fe/MgO magnetic tunnel junctions: First principles insight

Abstract:Using first-principles calculations, we elucidate microscopic mechanisms of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA)in Fe/MgO magnetic tunnel junctions through evaluation of orbital and layer resolved contributions into the total anisotropy value. It is demonstrated that the origin of the large PMA values is far beyond simply considering the hybridization between Fe-3d$ and O-2p orbitals at the interface between the metal and the insulator. On-site projected analysis show that the anisotropy energy is not localized at the interface but it rather propagates into the bulk showing an attenuating oscillatory behavior which depends on orbital character of contributing states and interfacial conditions. Furthermore, it is found in most situations that states with $d_{yz(xz)}$ and $d_{z^2}$ character tend always to maintain the PMA while those with $d_{xy}$ and $d_{x^2-y^2}$ character tend to favor the in-plane anisotropy. It is also found that while MgO thickness has no influence on PMA, the calculated perpendicular magnetic anisotropy oscillates as a function of Fe thickness with a period of 2ML and reaches a maximum value of 3.6 mJ/m$^2$.

Abstract:We investigated perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) and related properties of epitaxial Fe (0.7 nm)/MgAl2O4(001) heterostructures prepared by electron-beam evaporation. Using an optimized structure, we obtained a large PMA energy ~1 MJ/m3 at room temperature, comparable to that in ultrathin-Fe/MgO(001) heterostructures. Both the PMA energy and saturation magnetization show weak temperature dependence, ensuring wide working temperature in application. The effective magnetic damping constant of the 0.7 nm Fe layer was ~0.02 using time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect. This study demonstrates capability of the Fe/MgAl2O4 heterostructure for perpendicular magnetic tunnel junctions, as well as a good agreement with theoretical predictions.

GdFe-based nanostructured thin films with large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy for spintronic applications

Abstract:In this study, we investigated the impact of geometric factors on the magnetic anisotropy of Gd-Fe alloy thin films deposited on nanoporous alumina membranes. By synthesizing Gd-Fe alloy nanostructure thin films with different hole diameters (ranging from 45 to 90 nm) and keeping the layer thickness and lattice parameters fixed at 45 nm and 105 nm, respectively, we observed a significant perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) in samples with hole diameter above 65 nm. The transition from in-plane to out-of-plane magnetization in Gd-Fe alloy nanostructure thin films occurred at a critical antidot hole diameter of 75 nm. The observed variations in coercivity and remanence with the nanohole diameter are attributed to substantial changes in the magnetization mechanisms induced by the nanoholes. This novel induction of PMA in Gd-Fe alloy nanostructure thin films through the manipulation of geometric parameters in the antidot arrays opens new possibilities for tailoring the magnetic behavior of ferromagnetic metals with pronounced PMA.

Abstract:<p>We propose a method that manipulates the magnetic anisotropy of CoFe/MgO thin films by doping nitrogen (N) into CoFe. First-principle simulations are performed to investigate the magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) and electronic structures of CoFe/MgO thin films. It indicates that appropriate N doping to CoFe thin film can greatly enhance the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA), while excess N doping turns the easy axis of magnetization to in-plane. Layer-resolved MAE reveals that N doping can modulate the MAE of the layers of thin film, and the projected density of states near the Fermi level becomes larger contributing to the PMA. Furthermore, the charges transfer between N atom and Co/Fe atoms leads to charge re-distribution of Co/Fe layers, which is also helpful to improve the PMA. Our findings demonstrate the feasibility of significant enhancements in the magnetic anisotropy of CoFe/MgO thin films through the interstitial doping with nitrogen.</p>

Abstract:Using first-principles calculations, we reveal that the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of NiI2 monolayer can be effectively enhanced via decreasing the interlayer distance of graphene/NiI2 (Gr/NiI2) van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures. Furthermore, by analyzing the atomic-resolved magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE), orbital hybridization-resolved MAE and the density of states we elucidate that this magnetic anisotropy enhancement mainly originated from the electronic states change of 5p orbitals of interfacial I atoms. At the same time, we find that the NiI2 substrate induces strong magnetic proximity effects on graphene and the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) can be acquired by decreasing the interlayer spacing. Our work demonstrates the control of magnetic anisotropy of two-dimensional ferromagnetic materials via tuning vdW interlayer distance, and provides a van der Waals system to realize the QAHE.

Abstract:Antiferromagnetic (AFM) thin films are promising materials for engineering the magnetic anisotropy of adjacent ferromagnetic (FM) films. In this work, we explored the effects of triggering perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) of FM films by applying a series of NiMn-based AFM films with in-plane-oriented spin structures. The vertically expanded face-centered tetragonal Ni50Mn50 films alone could not induce PMA in Co/Ni films. By contrast, PMA was triggered through the application of Mn-rich NiMn alloy films or Ni50Mn50/1-monolayer Mn (Mn/1-ML Ni50Mn50) heterostructures. Detailed analyses of a series of samples indicated that two criteria must be met for a NiMn-based AFM film to trigger PMA in a neighboring FM film: (1) perpendicular interface crystalline anisotropy of interfacial uncompensated Mn moments must be established, and (2) strengthened lateral exchange coupling to volume AFM moments must be made. This paper clarifies how NiMn-based AFM films with in-plane-oriented AFM spin structures trigger the PMA of FM films, thus identifying a pathway to increase control over antiferromagnet-induced PMA through the interface/volume magnetic engineering of AFM layers.

Abstract:The perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) of Tm3Fe5O12 films has been successfully optimized by synergistically engineering the cation stoichiometry and epitaxial strain. By further imposing a strong tensile strain on the TmIG film with optimized cation stoichiometry, an unprecedented PMA value of ∼30 kJ/m3 for Tm3Fe5O12 films is successfully achieved. Establishing a reliable control of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) is challenging but essential for the full utilization of rare‐earth iron garnets in spintronic devices. In this study, a feasible approach to enhance the PMA of ferrimagnetic thulium iron garnet (TmIG) films is presented. This approach involves precise adjustments in cation stoichiometry and epitaxial strain state. By fine‐tuning the pre‐ablation process and oxygen partial pressure during pulsed laser deposition, a series of high‐quality TmIG films can grow with variable cation stoichiometry, i.e., the Tm/Fe molar ratio. The finding reveals that cation stoichiometry plays a crucial role in determining the magnetic properties of the TmIG films. Particularly, the stoichiometric TmIG film has the strongest PMA due to the maximized magnetostriction coefficient. Combining this stoichiometry optimization and strain engineering, an unprecedented PMA strength of ≈30 kJ m−3 for TmIG is achieved. This achievement demonstrates a simple and effective method for harnessing the magnetic properties of rare‐earth iron garnet films, paving the way for their advanced applications in next‐generation spintronic devices.

Significant Enhancement of Perpendicular Magnetic Anisotropy in Fe/MoSi2N4 by Hole Doping

Abstract:This study proposes a novel approach to enhanced the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) of Fe adsorbed on a MoSi2N4 substrate through hole doping. First principles calculations are employed to investigate the PMA of freestanding Fe and Fe/MoSi2N4 complex system. It is found that the PMA of Fe atom slightly increases from freestanding Fe monolayer to the Fe/MoSi2N4 system, which is attributed to the overlap between Fe-3d and N-2p orbitals. More interestingly, it is found that the PMA of Fe atoms in Fe/MoSi2N4 can be further enhanced by hole doping, which enables the PMA to increase significantly, up to four times the original value. This finding provides a promising way to enhance the PMA in two-dimensional spintronic devices. These results offering potential applications in developing advanced Two-dimensional (2D) spintronic devices.

Abstract:Nanostructures with giant magnetic anisotropy energies (MAEs) are desired in designing miniaturized magnetic storage and quantum computing devices. Previous works focused mainly on materials or elements with d electrons. Here, by taking Bi–X(X = In, Tl, Ge, Sn, Pb) adsorbed on nitrogenized divacancy of graphene and Bi atoms adsorbed on MgO(100) as examples, through ab initio and model calculations, we propose that special p-element dimers and single-adatoms on symmetry-matched substrates possess giant atomic MAEs of 72–200 meV, and has room temperature structural stability. The huge MAEs originate from the p-orbital degeneracy around the Fermi level in a symmetry-matched surface ligand field and the lifting of this degeneracy when spin–orbit interaction (SOI) is taken into account. Especially, we developed a simplified quantum mechanical model for the design principles of giant MAEs of supported magnetic adatoms and dimers. Thus, our discoveries and mechanisms provide a new paradigm to design giant atomic MAE of p electrons in supported nanostructures.

Abstract:The discovery of ferromagnetic two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdWs) materials provides an opportunity to explore intriguing physics and develop innovative spin electronic devices. However, the main challenge for practical applications of vdWs ferromagnetic crystals lies in the weak intrinsic ferromagnetism and small perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) above room temperature. Here, we report the intrinsic vdWs ferromagnetic crystal Fe 3 GaTe 2 , synthesized by the self-flux method, exhibiting a Curie temperature (T C ) of 370 K, a high saturation magnetization of 33.47 emu/g, and a large PMA energy density of approximately 4.17 × 10 5 J/m 3 . Furthermore, for the first time, the magneto-optical effect has been systematically investigated in Fe 3 GaTe 2 . The doubly degenerate E 2g (Γ) mode reverses the helicity of incident photons, indicating the existence of pseudoangular momentum (PAM) and chirality. Meanwhile, the non-degenerate non-chiral A 1g (Γ) phonon exhibits a significant magneto-Raman effect under an external out-of-plane magnetic field. These results lay the groundwork for studying phonon chirality and magneto-optical phenomena in 2D magnetic materials, providing the feasibility for further fundamental research and application in spintronic devices.

Two-Dimensional Growth of Fe Thin Films with Perpendicular Magnetic Anisotropy on Gan(0001)

Abstract:The growth and magnetism of Fe thin films on the GaN(0001) surface are studied by scanning tunneling microscopy and surface magneto-optic Kerr effect. It is found that Fe grows in a layer-by-layer mode on the pseudo-1×1 surface at room temperature, and the film develops magnetism at 1.2 ML and shows perpendicular magnetic anisotropy below 6 ML. On the bulk-terminated 1×1 surface, Fe grows in a three-dimensional mode, and ferromagnetization with in-plane anisotropy is observed only above 4.3 ML. Fe-induced √7×√7 reconstruction on the pseudo-1×1 surface plays the key role in reducing the interface reaction and promoting the two-dimensional growth.

Abstract:Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) of CoFeB(1.0 or 0.5 nm)/X(2.0 nm) (X = MgO, Ta, W, Ti, and Pt) multilayers, prepared by magnetron sputtering, has been studied as a function of X layers. The CoFeB/MgO multilayers with Co-O or Fe-O bondings exhibit superior PMA than CoFeB/metal multilayers, whose PMA properties are significantly influenced by the interfacial alloying and metal structures. In contrast to Co/noble-metal multilayers, whose PMA are determined by the interfacial Co atoms, the internal magnetic atoms in CoFeB(1.0 nm)/X(2.0 nm) multilayers make an important contribution to the magnetization normal to the plane and subsequent PMA. These observations and the corresponding mechanisms responsible for the variation of PMA would advance the insight into the PMA in CoFeB-based multilayers and its unique features compared with conventional Co/noble-metal multilayers. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Role of Tbfe on Perpendicular Magnetic Anisotropy and Giant Magnetoresistance Effect in [Co/ni](n)-Based Spin Valves

Abstract:The exchange-coupled [Co/Ni](N)/TbFe nano-magnetic films can display strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) which depends on the Tb:Fe component ratio, TbFe layer thickness and the repetition number N of [Co/Ni](N) multilayer. Perpendicular spin valves in the nano thickness scale, consisting of a [Co/Ni](3) free and a [Co/Ni](5)/TbFe reference multilayer, show high giant magnetoresistance (GMR) signal of 6.5 % and a large switching field difference over 3 kOe. However, unexpected slanting of the free layer magnetization, accompanied by a reduced GMR ratio, was found to be caused by the presence of a thick Fe-rich or even a thin but Tb-rich TbFe layer. We attribute this phenomenon to the large magnetostriction effect of TbFe which probably induces strong stress acting on the free layer and hence reduces its interfacial PMA.
Strong Perpendicular Anisotropy and Anisotropic Lande Factor in Bismuth-Doped Thulium Garnet Thin Films

Abstract:With the development of spintronics, garnet films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) have been attracting the attention of researchers for decades. In this work, bismuth-doped thulium iron garnet (Tm2BiFe5O12, TmBiIG) films of varying thickness having strong PMA effect were fabricated on substituted Gd3Ga5O12 (sGGG) (111) substrates using the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. Crystallographic characterization and magnetic properties of TmBiIG films were investigated using high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, vibrating sample magnetometry, and broadband ferromagnetic resonance (FMR). A high perpendicular anisotropic field of H-perpendicular to = 4,445 +/- 7.5 Oe in a 10-nm-thick film and H-perpendicular to = 4,582 +/- 7.7 Oe in a 30-nm-thick film at room temperature were obtained and analyzed in detail. Surprisingly, an additional spin-wave mode was observed in the in-plane FMR spectra. The discrepancy between in-plane and the out-of-plane Lande g-factors established a correlation with the PMA effect in the TmBiIG films. The Lande g-factor of the TmBiIG films is much lower than that of free electrons, indicating that the strong spin-orbit coupling is caused by Tm and Bi heavy elements. The Gilbert damping factor alpha changed from 0.007 to 0.012 in various thicknesses of TmBiIG films.
Giant interfacial perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in MgO/CoFe/capping layer structures

Abstract:Magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) based on CoFeB/MgO/CoFeB structures is of great interest due to its application in the spin-transfer-torque magnetic random access memory (STT-MRAM). Large interfacial perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) is required to achieve high thermal stability. Here we use first-principles calculations to investigate the magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) of MgO/CoFe/capping layer structures, where the capping materials include 5d metals Hf, Ta, Re, Os, Ir, Pt, Au and 6p metals Tl, Pb, Bi. We demonstrate that it is feasible to enhance PMA by using proper capping materials. Relatively large PMA is found in the structures with capping materials of Hf, Ta, Os, Ir and Pb. More importantly, the MgO/CoFe/Bi structure gives rise to giant PMA (6.09 mJ/m2), which is about three times larger than that of the MgO/CoFe/Ta structure. The origin of the MAE is elucidated by examining the contributions to MAE from each atomic layer and orbital. These findings provide a comprehensive understanding of the PMA and point towards the possibility to achieve advanced-node STT-MRAM with high thermal stability.

Abstract:Understanding the magnetic anisotropy at ferromagnetic metal/oxide interface is a fundamental and intriguing subject. Here we propose an approach to manipulate the strength of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) by varying MgO thickness in the MgO/CoFeB/Ta thin films. We identify that the PMA at the MgO/CoFeB interface is tuned by the crystalline structure of bulk MgO layer and decreases dramatically due to the onset of crystalline MgO forming with the increase of MgO thickness. Our work opens an avenue to manipulate the magnetic anisotropy by the modification of the ferromagnetic metal/oxide interface.

Giant Linear Dichroism Controlled by Magnetic Field in FePS$_3$

Abstract:Magnetic-field control of fundamental optical properties is a crucial challenge in the engineering of multifunctional microdevices. Van der Waals (vdW) magnets retaining a magnetic order even in atomically thin layers, offer a promising platform for hosting exotic magneto-optical functionalities owing to their strong spin-charge coupling. Here, we demonstrate that a giant optical anisotropy can be controlled by magnetic fields in the vdW magnet FePS$_3$. The giant linear dichroism ($\sim$11%), observed below $T_{\text{N}}\!\sim\!120$ K, is nearly fully suppressed in a wide energy range from 1.6 to 2.0 eV, following the collapse of the zigzag magnetic order above 40 T. This remarkable phenomenon can be explained as a result of symmetry changes due to the spin order, enabling minority electrons of Fe$^{2+}$ to hop in a honeycomb lattice. The modification of spin-order symmetry by external fields provides a novel route for controllable anisotropic optical micro-devices.
