Abstract:Ultralight ceramic aerogels are attractive thermal superinsulating materials, but display a formidable tradeoff between low and high temperature thermal conductivity (κ) due to their low-density features. Embedding carbon species as infrared opacifier in ultralight ceramic aerogels can substantially reduce the thermal radiation heat transfer without compromising the ultralow solid conduction. However, the oxidation resistance of embedded carbon species still remains inadequate to prevent thermal etching at high temperatures. Herein, we report a carbonaceous design and synthesis of ceramic nanofibrous aerogels with amorphous carbon embedded in the yttrium-stabilized zircon nanofibers to achieve a high-temperature thermal superinsulating performance with robust thermomechanical stability. The aerogels display one of the lowest κ of 95 mW·m−1·K−1 at 1,000 °C in air among ultralight material family, as well as robust mechanical flexibility with up to 95% compressive strain, 30% non-linear fracture strain, and 99% bending strain, and high thermal stability with ultralow strength degradation less than 1% after sharp thermal shocks (240 °C·s−1) and working temperature up to 1,200 °C. The combined high-temperature thermal superinsulating and thermomechanical properties offer an attractive material system for robust thermal insulation under extreme conditions.

Abstract:Ceramic aerogels are attractive candidates for thermal insulation systems in spaceships, missiles, and aircrafts. However, the general lack of mechanical stability in conventional ceramic aerogels presents a major challenge for their practical applications. To date, the creation of mechanically robust ceramic aerogels has not made significant progress. Herein, a universal strategy is presented to fabricate ceramic nanofibrous aerogels with both superior bendability and compressibility, by assembling flexible silica nanofibers with a high length‐to‐diameter ratio into a highly continuous interwoven cellular structure. The resulting aerogels, with improved structural continuity, exhibit enhanced mechanical properties including large compression and buckling strain recovery (85%), temperature‐invariant superelasticity (from −196 °C to 1100 °C), and robust fatigue tolerance up to 100 000 cycles. In parallel, the low thermal conductivity (0.0223 W m−1 K−1), as well as exceptional high‐temperature thermal insulation performance enable them to be ideal candidates for thermal insulation in extreme environments. The successful synthesis of this material may shed light on the development of other mechanically robust ceramic aerogels.

In situ Synthesis of Biomimetic Silica Nanofibrous Aerogels with Temperature-Invariant Superelasticity over One Million Compressions

Abstract:Resilient and compressible three-dimensional nanomaterials comprising polymers, carbon, and metals have been prepared in diverse forms. However, the creation of thermostable elastic ceramic aerogels remains an enormous challenge. We demonstrate an in situ synthesis strategy to develop biomimetic silica nanofibrous (SNF) aerogels with superelasticity by integrating flexible electrospun silica nanofibers and rubber-like Si-O-Si bonding networks. The stable bonding structure among nanofibers is in situ constructed along with a fibrous freeze-shaping process. The resultant SNF aerogels exhibit integrated properties of ultralow density (>0.25 mg cm-3 ), temperature-invariant superelasticity up to 1100 °C, and robust fatigue resistance over one million compressions. The ceramic nature also endows the aerogels with fire resistance and ultralow thermal conductivity. The successful synthesis of the SNF aerogels opens new pathways for the design of superelastic ceramic aerogels in a structurally adaptive and scalable form.
Nanofibrous Aerogel Bulk Assembled by Crosslinked SiC/SiOx Core-Shell Nanofibers with Multifunctionality and Temperature-Invariant Hyperelasticity.

Abstract:Nanofibrous aerogels constructed solely by ceramic components with temperature-invariant hyper-elasticity could have broad technological implications in extreme environments. However, creating such materials has proven to be extremely challenging. Despite the results from laboratory, those aerogels are, unfortunately, still plagued with issues that would retard their further application: inferior structural integrity, failure at large compressive deformation, high production cost, and inability to withstand rigorous working conditions. To tackle these challenges, we report a facile strategy combining the chemical vapor deposition process and layer-by-layer self-assembly to construct hyperelastic SiC nanofibrous aerogels with three-dimensional porous architecture and improved structural integrity. The resultant aerogels outperform their natural counterparts and most state-of-the-art ceramic nanofibrous aerogels in their capability to quickly recover from large compressive deformation (50% strain), function in a wide range of temperatures, from -196 degrees C to 1100 degrees C in air, maintain high particle matter removal efficiency of >99.96%, and rapidly absorb various organic solvents and oils with high capacity and robust recoverability. Nanofibrous aerogels constructed by such a versatile method could provide fresh insights into the exploration of multifunctional nanofibrous aerogels for a variety of applications in extreme environments.
Ultrastrong, Superelastic, and Lamellar Multiarch Structured ZrO 2 –Al 2 O 3 Nanofibrous Aerogels with High-Temperature Resistance over 1300 °C

Abstract:Advanced ceramic aerogel materials with a performance combining sufficient mechanical robustness and splendid high-temperature resistance are urgently needed as thermal insulators in harsh environments. However, the practical applications of ceramic aerogel materials are always limited by poor mechanical performance and degradation under thermal shock. Here, we report the facile creation of lamellar multiarch structured ceramic nanofibrous aerogels that are simultaneously ultrastrong, superelastic, and high temperature resistant by combining ZrO2–Al2O3 nanofibers with Al(H2PO4)3 matrices. The resulting ZrO2–Al2O3 nanofibrous aerogels exhibit the integrated properties of rapid recovery from a strain of 90%, high compression strength of more than 1100 kPa (at a strain of 90%), high fatigue resistance, and temperature-invariant superelasticity. Moreover, the all-ceramic component feature also provides the ceramic nanofibrous aerogels with high-temperature resistance up to 1300 °C and thermal insulation performance with low thermal conductivity (0.0322 W m–1 K–1). Abstract:Ceramic fibrous aerogels are highly desirable for thermal management materials due to their high porosity, excellent elasticity, thermal conductivity, and good thermal resistance. However, the fabrication of nanofibrous aerogel with super-elasticity and good shape retention at the same time has remained challenging. To meet the requirements, a novel anisotropy nanofibrous-granular aerogel with a quasi-layered multi-arch-like and hierarchical-cellular structure is designed and prepared by vacuum-filtration-assisted freeze-drying and sintering. The quasi-layered multi-arch and flexible nanofibers endowed the aerogels with excellent mechanical robustness (ultimate stress up to 60 kPa with strain 60%) and super-elasticity with recoverable compression strain up to 60%. The introduced SiO 2 aerogel nanoparticles and nanofibers are assembled into an arch-like structure and become the connection point of adjacent nanofibers, which endows low thermal conductivity (0.024 mW/(mK)) of composite aerogel. This novel strategy provides a fresh perspective for the preparation of nanofibrous aerogel with robust mechanical in thermal insulation and other fields.

Ultralight elastic Al2O3 nanorod-graphene aerogel for pressure sensing and thermal superinsulation

Abstract:Novel nanorod aerogels have gained tremendous attention owing to their unique structure. However, the intrinsic brittleness of ceramics still severely limits their further functionalization and application. Here, based on the self-assembly between one-dimensional (1D) Al2O3 nanorods and two-dimensional (2D) graphene sheets, lamellar binary Al2O3 nanorod-graphene aerogels (ANGAs) were prepared by the bidirectional freeze-drying technique. Thanks to the synergistic effect of rigid Al2O3 nanorods and high specific extinction coefficient elastic graphene, the ANGAs not only exhibit robust structure and variable resistance under pressure, but also possess superior thermal insulation properties compared to pure Al2O3 nanorod aerogels. Therefore, a series of fascinating features such as ultra-low density (3.13-8.26 mg cm-3), enhanced compressive strength (6 times higher than graphene aerogel), excellent pressure sensing durability (500 cycles at 40% strain) and ultra-low thermal conductivity (0.0196 W m-1 K-1 at 25 °C and 0.0702 W m-1 K-1 at 1000 °C) are integrated in ANGAs. The present work provides fresh insight into the fabrication of ultralight thermal superinsulating aerogels and the functionalization of ceramic aerogels.

Abstract:The thermal radiation phenomenon is more crucial than other thermal transportation phenomena at elevated temperatures (>300 °C). Therefore, infrared radiation resistance and its performance on thermal conduction of nanofibrous aerogel with Titanium oxide (TiO2) filler have been investigated compared to control groups (silica nanofibrous aerogels with and without filler). Nanofibrous aerogel has been produced by electrospun silica nanofibers. Later, TiO2 opacifier and a non-opacifier filled materials were prepared by a solution homogenization method and then freeze-dried to obtain particle-filled nanofibrous aerogel. Moreover, the thermal radiation conductivity of the composite was calculated by numerical simulation, and the effect of the anti-infrared radiation of the TiO2 opacifier was obtained. The fascinating inhibited infrared radiation transmission performance (infrared transmittance ~67% at 3 μm) and excellent thermal insulation effect (thermal conductivity of 0.019 Wm−1K−1 at room temperature) and maximum compressive strengths (3.22 kPa) of silica nanofibrous aerogel with TiO2 opacifier were verified. Excellent thermal insulation, compression and thermal stability properties show its potential for practical application in industrial production. The successful synthesis of this material may shed light on the development of other insulative ceramic aerogels.

Abstract:Thermal insulation under extreme conditions requires materials that can withstand sharp thermal shocks as well as extended high-temperature exposure. In this regard, a new generation of elastic ceramic aerogels (CAGs) are attractive for their tunable structure, light weight, low thermal conductivity, high thermal stability, excellent fire and corrosion resistances, as well as mechanical flexibility. Here we review recent progress in elastic CAGs for thermal superinsulation, focusing on elastic deformability, thermal stability, and thermal insulation. In particular, we first summarize various structure engineering strategies, including one-dimensional nanofibrous structures and two-dimensional nanolayered structures to endow the elasticity that can overcome the intrinsic brittle nature of ceramic materials. We next discuss strategies to further enhance the thermal stability by tuning ceramic crystallinity, oxidation resistance, and thermal expansion behavior, and then elaborate on approaches to reduce the thermal conductivity. Finally, we highlight the optimized elastic CAGs with extreme-low thermal conductivity, ultra-high working temperature, and excellent elasticity for a variety of applications in thermal insulation, gas catalysis, energy storage, and environmental remediation.

Abstract:Silica aerogels have attracted significant interest in thermal insulation applications because of their low thermal conductivity and great thermal stability, however, their fragility has limited their application in every-day products. Herein, a self-reinforcing strategy to design silica nanofibrous aerogels (SNFAs) is proposed using electrospun SiO2 nanofibers as the matrix and a silica sol as a high-temperature nanoglue. Adopting this approach results in a strong and compatible interfacial interaction between the SiO2 fibers and the silica sol, which results in the SNFAs exhibiting high-temperature-resistant and tunable mechanical properties from elastic to rigid. Furthermore, additional properties such as low density, high thermal insulation performance, and fire-resistance are still retained. The self-reinforcing method described herein may be extended to numerous other new ceramic aerogels that require robust mechanical properties and high-temperature resistance.Graphic Abstract

Abstract:Emerging fiber aerogels with excellent mechanical properties are considered as promising thermal insulation materials. However, their applications in extreme environments are hindered by unsatisfactory high-temperature thermal insulation properties resulting from severely increased radiative heat transfer. Here, numerical simulations are innovatively employed for structural design of fiber aerogels, demonstrating that adding SiC opacifiers to directionally arranged ZrO2 fiber aerogels (SZFAs) can substantially reduce high-temperature thermal conductivity. As expected, SZFAs obtained by directional freeze-drying technique demonstrate far superior high-temperature thermal insulation performance over existing ZrO2-based fiber aerogels, with a thermal conductivity of only 0.0663 W·m−1·K−1 at 1000 °C. Furthermore, SZFAs also exhibit excellent comprehensive properties, including ultralow density (6.24–37.25 mg·cm−3), superior elasticity (500 compression cycles at 60% strain) and outstanding heat resistance (up to 1200 °C). The birth of SZFAs provides theoretical guidance and simple construction methods for the fabrication of fiber aerogels with excellent high-temperature thermal insulation properties used for extreme conditions.

Abstract:As promising candidates for a wide range of applications, advanced ceramic aerogels with robust mechanical properties are urgently needed. However, the generic structural characteristics of ceramic aerogels, such as brittleness, fatigue failure, and large energy dissipation, present a great obstacle to their practical applications. Herein, we report a universal strategy to demonstrate a ceramic nanofibrous aerogel with superior elasticity and high fatigue resistance, realized by assembling flexible ZrO2-SiO2 nanofibers into fluffy lamellar arch-shaped cellular structured. The as-obtained ZrO2-SiO2 nanofibrous aerogels can rapidly recover from 90% strain, and exhibit high compression strength of 950 kPa (90% strain) and temperature-invariant superelasticity (from −196 to 1100 °C). In particular, the aerogels exhibit a low energy loss coefficient (0.28) and high fatigue resistance with zero plastic deformation after 1000 compression and release cycles, surpassing the performance of previously reported ceramic aerogels. Furthermore, the low thermal conductivity (0.0268 W m−1 K−1) and excellent high-temperature thermal insulation make it a desirable candidate for heat insulators under harsh conditions. The successful synthesis of these structural ceramic materials with high superelasticity, excellent compressibility, and superior fatigue resistance simultaneously opens up avenues for further the development of mechanically robust aerogel materials.

Abstract:Elastic and compressible 3D nanomaterials comprising polymers, carbon, and metals have been prepared quantitatively in different formats. However, creating flexible and elastic ceramic aerogels with high thermal stability remains a significant challenge. In this study, sols composed of highly condensed inorganic molecular chains can be used to prepare ceramic nanofiber aerogels without adding polymers. This strategy prevents many pore defects caused by the thermal decomposition of polymers during ceramization and avoids the stress concentration generated by pore defects, which could lead to irreversible structural damage to the ceramic nanofiber aerogels under external forces. The synthesized ceramic nanofiber aerogel possesses temperature-invariant superelasticity (up to 1300 °C) and fatigue resistance to thousands of compressions with a thermal conductivity of only 0.028 W m−1 k−1. The successful synthesis of such aerogels is expected to provide a foundation for designing flexible and elastic ceramic aerogels with structural adaptability and scalability.

Abstract:The fabrication of insulation materials with ultralow thermal conductivity and excellent thermal stability at high temperatures (higher than 1200 °C) has remained an extremely challenging. In this study, we reported the manufacturing of mullite-based nanofibrous aerogels via the gel-casting and freeze drying methods using the electrospun nanofibers with different alumina/silica molar ratios (3:2, 3:1 and 3:0) as the matrix and silica sols as the high temperature binders. The formation process of the mullite-based fibrous aerogel and effect of aerogel composition on the sample physical and mechanical properties were investigated. All mullite-based nanofibrous aerogel show a similar multilevel pore structure. The minor pores were formed by the overlaps of nanofibers and were the fundamental porous structure of the aerogel, while the major pores was caused by the sublimation of the ice crystal. This unique multilevel pore structure make the mullite-based nanofibrous aerogels exhibit an ultralow density (34.64–48.89 mg/cm3) and low thermal conductivity (0.03274–0.04317 Wm−1 K−1) although the sintering temperature was as high as 1400 °C much higher than the service temperature of the traditional nanoparticle aerogel. In addition, besides controlling the fabrication parameters, the physical and mechanical properties could be also tuned by adjusting the composition of the nanofibers. The research of this work provides a new insight into the development of high efficient thermal insulation materials used at high temperatures.

Abstract:Abstract Ceramic aerogels are highly efficient, lightweight, and chemically stable thermal insulation materials but their application is hindered by their brittleness and low strength. Flexible nanostructure-assembled compressible aerogels have been developed to overcome the brittleness but they still show low strength, leading to insufficient load-bearing capacity. Here we designed and fabricated a laminated SiC-SiO x nanowire aerogel that exhibits reversible compressibility, recoverable buckling deformation, ductile tensile deformation, and simultaneous high strength of up to an order of magnitude larger than other ceramic aerogels. The aerogel also shows good thermal stability ranging from −196 °C in liquid nitrogen to above 1200 °C in butane blow torch, and good thermal insulation performance with a thermal conductivity of 39.3 ± 0.4 mW m −1 K −1 . These integrated properties make the aerogel a promising candidate for mechanically robust and highly efficient flexible thermal insulation materials.

Abstract:Thermal insulation under extreme conditions requires the materials to be capable of withstanding complex thermo‐mechanical stress, significant gradient temperature transition, and high‐frequency thermal shock. The excellent structural and functional properties of ceramic aerogels make them attractive for thermal insulation. However, in extremely high‐temperature environments (above 1500 °C), they typically exhibit limited insulation capacity and thermo‐mechanical stability, which may lead to catastrophic accidents, and this problem has never been effectively addressed. Here, we design a novel ceramic meta‐aerogel constructed from a crosslinked nanofiber network using a reaction electrospinning strategy, which ensures excellent thermo‐mechanical stability and superinsulation under extreme conditions. The ceramic meta‐aerogel has an ultralow thermal conductivity of 0.027 W m–1 k–1, and the cold surface temperature is only 303 °C in a 1700 °C high‐temperature environment. After undergoing a significant gradient temperature transition from liquid nitrogen to 1700 °C flame burning, the ceramic meta‐aerogel can still withstand thousands of shears, flexures, compressions, and other complex forms of mechanical action without structural collapse. Highly‐Buckled Nanofibrous Ceramic Aerogels with Ultra‐Large Stretchability and Tensile‐Insensitive Thermal Insulation

Abstract:A bio‐inspired design and synthesis of ultra‐stretchable ceramic aerogels based on highly buckled nanofibers is reported to solve the formidable fiber fracture in ceramic aerogels. The resulting material features unusual combination of ultra‐large stretchability, excellent thermomechanical stability and tensile‐insensitive thermal insulating property, which addresses the critical and bottleneck problem of low structural stability induced thermal runaway in ceramic aerogels. Ceramic aerogels have exhibited many superior characteristics with promising applications. As an attractive material system for thermal insulation under extreme conditions, ceramic aerogels are required to withstand complex thermomechanical stress to retain their super‐insulating properties but, they often suffer from severe fracture damage that can lead to catastrophic failure. Herein, inspired by the tendrils of Parthenocissus, we report a design and synthesis of ultra‐stretchable ceramic aerogels constructed by highly buckled nanofibers. The buckling of nanofibers is formed by asymmetric deformation through two‐component off‐axial electrospinning method. The resulting aerogels feature an ultra‐large stretchability with a tensile strain of up to 150% and high restorability with a tensile strain of up to 80%. They also display a near‐zero Poisson's ratio (4.3 × 10−2) and a near‐zero thermal expansion coefficient (2.6 × 10−7 per °C), resulting in excellent thermomechanical stability. Benefiting from this ultra‐stretchability, the aerogels exhibit a unique tensile‐insensitive thermal insulation performance with thermal conductivities remaining only ≈106.7 mW m−1 K−1 at 1000 °C. This work promotes the development of ceramic aerogels for robust thermal insulation under extreme conditions and establishes a set of fundamental considerations in structural design of stretchable aerogels for a wide spectrum of applications.

Abstract:To exploit the high-temperature superinsulation potential of anisotropic thermal management materials, the incorporation of ceramic aerogel into the aligned structural networks is indispensable. However, the long-standing obstacle to exploring ultralight superinsulation ceramic aerogels is the inaccessibility of its mechanical elasticity, stability, and anisotropic thermal insulation. In this study, we report a recoverable, flexible ceramic fiber-aerogel composite with anisotropic lamellar structure, where the interfacial cross-linking between ceramic fiber and aerogel is important in its superinsulation performance. The resulting ultralight aerogel composite exhibits a density of 0.05 g/cm3, large strain recovery (over 50%), and low thermal conductivity (0.0224 W m-1 K-1), while its hydrophobicity is achieved by in situ trichlorosilane coating with the water contact angle of 135°. The hygroscopic tests of such aerogel composites demonstrate a reversible thermal insulation. The mechanical elasticity and stability of the anisotropic composites, with its soundproof performance, shed light on the low-cost superelastic aerogel manufacturing with scalability for energy saving building applications.
