Abstract:Gum-based nanoparticles (GNPs) are versatile carriers for drug delivery and therapy. Gums have been used in pharmaceuticals for a long time. In the nanosize range, natural gums demonstrate unique characteristics which are very useful in detecting, diagnosing, and treating various diseases. Recently, GNPs proved their potential in various pharmaceutical and biomedical applications. They are stable, biocompatible, nontoxic, and highly flexible for loading various therapeutic and nontherapeutic candidates. GNPs are potential tools in drug delivery, bioimaging, cancer therapy, cell engineering, brain targeting, and many other applications. They can accommodate both hydrophilic and hydrophobic drugs. Most chemotherapeutic drugs can be safely encapsulated in GNPs for drug delivery. Since GNPs are efficient candidates for various biomedical applications, their usage and research are growing in the biomedical field. This chapter discusses principal gums and their preparation, characterization, and biomedical and cancer therapy applications.
