Abstract:Lignin, an amorphous 3D cross-linked aromatic polymer, accounts for 30% of the organic carbon in the biosphere; however, it is categorized as an underutilized material due to its heterogeneity. Nonetheless, the presence of enriched aromatic units present in lignin structure makes it an attractive source for the production of a wide range of value-added products/chemicals that find diverse applications, like food and pharmaceutical preparations, medicinal chemistry, drug design, and coatings. However, the highly stable chemical bonds and the structure’s complexity offer a dynamic challenge during the valorization of potential chemicals (phenolics). Lignin valorization must be based on new materials and green technological approaches to fulfill the necessary environmental and economic requirements. Semiconductor photocatalysis is a profoundly effective technique attributable to the most convenient, green, and cost-effective strategy for a complete degradation or transformation of the recalcitrant lignin. The chapter comprehensively reviews the recent advances in the photocatalytic selective decomposition of lignin and lignin-based compounds to simple aromatic molecules over a variety of photocatalysts and presents as a promising approach to deal with the current energy demand and environmental calamity.
