Abstract:Literature on environmental management states that since organizations are the main cause of environmental problems, they also play a large part in addressing those issues and act toward them. Thus, a wide range of eco-initiatives have been launched by organizations as one organizational response to environmental degradation, supported on a developing Green human resources management model. This paper then identifies the elements of environmental management, links them to the green human resource management approach, and outlines avenues for further study in the field, integrating environmental management and human resource management as a subject of research and expanding the scope of strategic human resource management to incorporate sustainability and environmental issues. Implementing an effective corporate green management system implies promoting technical and management skills among all employees in the organization. So, the following processes and practices become vital: strict recruitment and selection strategies based on environmental consciousness, an evaluation process transfiguring into an appraisal and reward systems covering environmental performance, as well as training and empowerment programs on the topic. For today’s organizations, it is crucial to promote a proper alignment of human management principles with green management: the greater the strength of green human resources’ policies, the greater the companies’ intensity to adopt environmental management systems and policies, under the premise of fostering prosperity beyond economic growth, inherently referring to sustainability as an imperative. While some answers concerning human resources’ future seem to be known and shared, much more is still unknown, calling out for the need of further research.
