Abstract:P123DA/PEDOT:PSS solid electrodes are developed for dielectric elastomer actuators. The study explores the impact of P123DA/PEDOT:PSS ratios on optical, electrical, morphological, and mechanical properties of the electrodes, demonstrating the importance of tuning these properties for enhanced actuation performances in static and dynamic applications. Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) offer versatile applications including haptics, soft robotics and smart lenses. However, due to the lack of conductive electrodes with low modulus and high stretchability, their use is limited by nonsolid electrodes, hindering integration with other systems. In this study, transparent and patternable solid electrodes, achieving actuation performance comparable to a commonly used non‐solid counterpart (e.g., carbon grease), with a stretchable and patternable conducting polymer composed of PEDOT:PSS and PEG‐PPG‐PEG diacrylate (P123DA) are reported. Varying the ratio of P123DA to PEDOT:PSS enables optimization of electrical and mechanical properties to achieve compliant solid electrodes in static and dynamic actuation. The ratio of P123DA to PEDOT:PSS is found to impact PEDOT:PSS nanofiber formation and the associated electrical and mechanical properties. Moreover, the resulting P123DA/PEDOT:PSS‐based solid electrode shows excellent optical transmittance exceeding 95%. This work highlights the potential of tuning different solid electrode properties to realize transparent, patternable, and stretchable solid electrodes, enhancing their applicability in diverse fields.

Abstract:A comparative study of metal-free air-operated polypyrrole and PEDOT based trilayer actuators is presented. Actuators made of both pure and combined conducting polymers are considered. Trilayer bending actuators, synthesized in similar conditions, are characterized in terms of the structure, electrochemical and electro-chemo-mechanical properties. The characterization was carried out using two popular electrolytes: LiTFSI in propylene carbonate and a room-temperature ionic liquid EMIm TFSI. The results reveal that structure and actuation properties of the synthesized actuators depend on both the polymer chosen for the chemically synthesized electrode layer as well as the electrochemically synthesized working layer.

Abstract:Abstract The application of organic conducting polymers such as poly (3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene): poly (4-styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) is vastly expanding for the development of advanced and flexible organic electronic devices, such as solar cells, light-emitting diodes, and organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs). Also, PEDOT: PSS can perfectly replace high-cost Indium tin oxide (ITO) thin films. In this study, PEDOT: PSS was synthesized via the chemical oxidative polymerization method. The film formation was carried out through a feasible drop-casting method onto a cleaned glass substrate. To further enhance the conductivity of pristine PEDOT: PSS, the PEDOT: PSS thin films were post-treated with different concentrations (3, 5, and 7% v/v) of ethylene glycol (EG). Based on the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis, it was revealed that the post-treated sample had a higher conductivity value compared to the untreated sample (2.48 × 10 -4 S/cm), with the highest recorded conductivity value of 2.67 ×10 -3 S/cm at 5% v/v of EG. This result corresponds to the previous study, which highlighted that the optimum concentration of EG is 5% v/v to achieve the optimum conductivity value for thin film application. Furthermore, the structural properties of the thin films were characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy to confirm the presence of PEDOT: PSS and EG in the samples.
Performance Enhancement of Ionic Polymer-Metal Composite Actuators with Polyethylene Oxide

Abstract:Current ionic polymer-metal composite (IPMC) always proves inadequate in terms of large attenuation and short working time in air due to water leakage. To address this problem, a feasible and effective solution was proposed in this study to enhance IPMC performance operating in air by doping polyethylene oxide (PEO) with superior water retention capacity into Nafion membrane. The investigation of physical characteristics of membranes blended with varying PEO contents revealed that PEO/Nafion membrane with 20 wt% PEO exhibited a homogeneous internal structure and a high water uptake ratio. At the same time, influences of PEO contents on electromechanical properties of IPMCs were studied, showing that the IPMCs with 20 wt% PEO presented the largest peak-to-peak displacement, the highest volumetric work density, and prolonged stable working time. It was demonstrated that doping PEO reinforced electromechanical performances and restrained displacement attenuation of the resultant IPMC.

Abstract:The transparent ionic liquid/polyurethane (IL/PU) gels were synthesized by addition reaction of polyol and diisocyanate in the presence of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide. With increasing the IL content from 0wt% to 40wt%, both ionic conductivity and electric-double-layer capacitance increased from 3.1×10−5Scm−1 and 9.6pFcm−2 to 8.8×10−5Scm−1 and 277pFcm−2, respectively, while the compression modulus slightly decreased from 0.49MPa to 0.44MPa. The IL/PU/PEDOT:PSS composites were fabricated by sandwiching the IL/PU gel between two conductive polymer films made of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) as soft and flexible electrodes. Upon application of an electric field, the IL/PU/PEDOT:PSS composite showed quick and intensive bending toward anode, where the bending displacement attained 3.8mm at IL=40wt% and 2V, corresponding to the strain of 0.32%.

A New Kind of Electro-Active Polymer Composite Composed of Silicone Elastomer and Polyethylene Glycol

Abstract:In this work, a new kind of electro-active polymer composite composed of silicone and polyethylene glycol (PEG) was prepared by solution blending. Two types of PEG with average molecular weights of 600(PEG600) and 1500(PEG1500) were first blended with liquid silicone (DC3481) separately. Then, the dielectric, electrical, mechanical and electromechanical properties of pure silicone and the silicone/PEG composites were investigated. The silicone/PEG600 composite shows an increased dielectric constant and a decreased Young's modulus, resulting in an improved figure of merit (FOM) and an actuation strain of 11.5% at 40 V mu m(-1), which is 64% higher than pure silicone. This indicates that the actuation properties of silicone are largely improved by the addition of PEG600. However, for the silicone/PEG1500 composite, a much higher dielectric constant and an increased modulus due to its semi-crystalline structure are obtained, which lead to a decreased FOM and a smaller actuation strain than that of pure silicone. In addition, a comparison between theoretical strain and the corresponding experiment value was made. And the results indicate that not only the FOM, but the dielectric loss and mechanical loss play an important role in the actuation properties.
Self-Standing High-Performance Transparent Actuator Based on Poly(dimethylsiloxane)/TEMPO-Oxidized Cellulose Nanofibers/Ionic Liquid Gel

Abstract:The sustainable application of cellulose nanofibers and ionic liquids (ILs) in the fabrication of transparent gel electrolyte actuators combined with thin electrodes remains to be explored. Accordingly, this study developed a new actuator on the basis of a 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical-oxidized cellulose nanofibers/IL/poly(dimethylsiloxane) (TOCN/IL/PDMS) transparent gel electrolyte. A casting method was employed to prepare the gel electrolyte film, and spray-coating was used to apply thin electrodes. On the basis of its electromechanical and electrochemical properties, the TOCN/IL/PDMS gel electrolyte actuator had high strain performance. The actuator's operational mechanism is based on both electrostatic double-layer capacitor (EDLC) and Faradaic capacitor mechanisms, with the EDLC mechanism having a stronger influence. The actuator's displacement-response frequency dependency was determined, and we simulated the obtained findings by using a double-layer charging kinetic model. The combined gel electrolyte and electrode resistance resulted in a favorable fit to the experimental data, as did the gel electrolyte resistance alone. The performance of the TOCN/IL/PDMS-electrolyte-based polymer actuators can be improved further by designing electrolytes (primarily) and electrodes to have high ionic and electrical conductivities. The films-which are flexible, robust, and transparent-may have potential as actuator materials within electronic and energy-conversion devices that are required to be wearable and transparent.

Electromechanical properties of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/poly(4-styrene sulfonate) films

Abstract:Free-standing films made of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with poly(4-styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT/PSS) were prepared by casting water dispersion of its colloidal particles. Morphology, water vapor sorption, and electro-active polymer actuating behavior of the resulting films were investigated by means of atomic force microscopy, sorption isotherm, thermal mechanical analysis, and electromechanical analysis. It was found that the PEDOT/PSS film sorbed 60% of moisture at relative water vapor pressure of 0.95. Upon application of 10 V, the film underwent contraction of 2.4% in air at 50% relative humidity (RH) which significantly increased to 4.5% at 90% RH. The principle lay in desorption of water vapor sorbed in the film due to Joule heating, where electric field was capable of controlling the equilibrium of water vapor sorption. The film generated contractile stress as high as 17 MPa under isometric conditions and work capacity attained 174 kJ m(-3), where Young's modulus of the film increased from 1.8 to 2.6 GPa by application of 6 V at 50% RH.
Enhanced Humid Reliability of Organic Thermoelectrics via Crosslinking with Glycerol

Abstract:Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) has shown significant achievements in organic thermoelectrics (TEs) as an alternative for inorganic counterparts. However, PEDOT:PSS films have limited practical applications because their performance is sensitive to humidity. Crosslinking additives are utilized to improve the reliability of PEDOT:PSS film through enhancing hydrophobicity; among these, polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a widely-used additive. However, ether groups in PEG induce water molecules in the film through the hydrogen bond, which deteriorates the TE reliability. Here, we enhance the TE reliability of the PEDOT:PSS film using glycerol as an additive through the crosslinking reaction between the hydroxyl group in glycerol and the sulfonic acid in PEDOT:PSS. The TE reliability (1/Power factor (PF)) of PEG solution-treated PEDOT:PSS film (PEG solution-treated film) was 57% of its initial absolute value (0 h), after 288 h (two weeks) in a humid environment (95% relative humidity, 27 °C temperature). On the other hand, the glycerol solution-treated PEDOT:PSS film (glycerol solution-treated film) exhibited superior TE reliability and preserved 75% of its initial 1/PF. Furthermore, glycerol vapor treatment enabled the film to have stronger TE humid reliability, maintaining 82% of its initial 1/PF, with the same condition. This enhancement is attributed to the increased hydrophobicity and lower oxygen content of the glycerol vapor-treated PEDOT:PSS film (glycerol vapor-treated film), which provides little change in the chemical composition of PEDOT:PSS.
Modulating Surface Cation Concentration via Tuning the Molecular Structures of Ethylene Glycol-Functionalized PEDOT for Improved Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:The sluggish catalytic kinetics of nonprecious metal-based electrocatalysts often hinder them from achieving efficient hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs). Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) and its derivatives have been promising materials for various electrochemical applications. Nevertheless, previous studies have demonstrated that PEDOT coatings can be detrimental to HER performance. In this study, we investigated the alkaline HER efficiency of nickel foam coated with three types of ethylene glycol (EG)-functionalized EDOT. Specifically, EDOT derivatives bearing hydroxyl (-OH) and methoxy (-OCH3) end groups on the EG side chain and molecules containing two EDOT units are interconnected via EG moieties. EG groups are selected due to their strong interaction with alkali metal cations. Intriguingly, improved HER performance is observed on all electrodes coated with EG-functionalized EDOTs. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation, and XPS analysis are employed to explore the origin of enhanced HER efficiency. The results suggest the EG moieties can induce locally concentrated ions near the electrode surface and facilitate water dissociation through noncovalent interactions. The influence of EG chain length is systematically investigated by synthesizing molecules with di-EG, tetra-EG, and hexa-EG functionalities. This study highlights the importance of molecular design in modifying electrode surface properties to promote alkaline HER.
Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube-Reinforced PEDOT: PSS Hybrid Electrodes for High-Performance Ionic Electroactive Polymer Actuator

Abstract:Ionic electroactive polymer (iEAP) actuators are recognized as exceptional candidates for artificial muscle development, with significant potential applications in bionic robotics, space exploration, and biomedical fields. Here, we developed a new iEAP actuator utilizing high-purity single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs)-reinforced poly(3, 4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS, PP) hybrid electrodes and a Nafion/EMIBF4 ion-exchange membrane via a straightforward and efficient spray printing technique. The SWCNT/PP actuator exhibits significantly enhanced electric conductivity (262.9 S/cm) and specific capacitance (22.5 mF/cm2), benefitting from the synergistic effect between SWCNTs and PP. These improvements far surpass those observed in activated carbon aerogel bucky-gel-electrode-based actuators. Furthermore, we evaluated the electroactive behaviors of the SWCNT/PP actuator under alternating square-wave voltages (1-3 V) and frequencies (0.01-100 Hz). The results reveal a substantial bending displacement of 6.44 mm and a high bending strain of 0.61% (at 3 V, 0.1 Hz), along with a long operating stability of up to 10,000 cycles (at 2 V, 1 Hz). This study introduces a straightforward and efficient spray printing technique for the successful preparation of iEAP actuators with superior electrochemical and electromechanical properties as intended, which hold promise as artificial muscles in the field of bionic robotics.
Strategically tailoring ethylene glycol side chains with bridged-carbonyl ester in polythiophene-based organic electrochemical transistors for bioelectronics

Abstract:Organic mixed ionic-electronic conductors (OMIECs) hold great promise in the fields of bioelectronics, optoelectronics, and energy storage devices, and are characterized by unique microregions that facilitate electron and ion transport during electrochemical operations in electrolytes. In particular, conjugated polymers (CPs) can serve as interfaces for OMIECs to facilitate reversible reactions during electrochemically-driven ion implantation. In applications involving organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs), this mechanism greatly enhances the amplification of electrical signals, while the ion transport properties vary depending on the design of the polymer side chains. In this study, we strategically designed the side chains in the synthesis of polythiophene (PT)-based CPs and systematically investigated their effects on the electrochemical properties as well as the modulation of the charge entry and exit characteristics of the films. To gain insight into the material properties and stacking states of the poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) side chains on the CP backbone, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and theoretical calculations of the CP surface energy were performed. In addition, we evaluated their hydrophilicity and protein-repelling properties by wettability tests and electrochemical dissipative quartz crystal microbalance measurements, respectively. The films of P1 (with branched alkyl-bridged carbonyl ester side chains), P2 (with tetraethylene glycol-bridged carbonyl ester side chains), and P3 (with tetraethylene glycol side chains) have distinctly different ion/electron transport properties. Unlike P1 and P3 , P2 reduced film swelling during electrochemical operation in an aqueous NaCl electrolyte and showed a greater ability to repel proteins, especially bovine serum albumin. Subsequently, we integrated these CP films into the comb-like active-layer channels of OECTs. Our results show that the P2 film improves the ion/electron transport properties and adhesion on the electrodes without affecting the carrier mobility ( μ ) and clearly exhibits fully reversible electrochromic behavior at low operating voltages (<1 V). Furthermore, P2 exhibits superior long-term stability during OECT operation compared to P3 . Our findings establish material design principles for bridged carbonyl ester PEG side-chain PTs, which are essential for fine-tuning their suitability for biomedical applications in OECTs.

Abstract:An ionic electroactive polymer actuator (IEPA) was fabricated in this study using a blend of regioregular-poly(3-hexylthiophene) (RR-P3HT) nanofibers, regiorandom-P3HT (RRa-P3HT), and polybutadiene rubber (PBR). The RR-P3HT nanofiber mat, which was reinforced with RRa-P3HT as tie chains and PBR as a flexible matrix, exhibited a large surface area where the nanofibers contacted the electrolyte. Therefore, efficient actuation is expected to synergize with the superior carrier mobility inherent in the nanofibrous architecture. The blended actuator, which preserved the RR-P3HT nanofiber structure, exhibited a substantial bending angle exceeding 80° following the redox reaction while sustaining reversible actuation for more than 30 cycles. An optimal scan rate below 100 mV s −1 was required to obtain substantial actuation. Therefore, the RR-P3HT nanofibers blended with RRa-P3HT and PBR demonstrated remarkable functionality as an IEPA, which was characterized by a significant bending angle and enduring cyclic actuation capabilities.

Electrochemical modulation of mechanical properties of glycolated polythiophenes

Abstract:Electrochemical doping of organic mixed ionic-electronic conductors is key for modulating their conductivity, charge storage and volume enabling high performing bioelectronic devices such as recording and stimulating electrodes, transistors-based sensors and actuators. However, electrochemical doping has not been explored to the same extent for modulating the mechanical properties of OMIECs on demand. Here, we report a qualitative and quantitative study on how the mechanical properties of a glycolated polythiophene (pg3T2) change in-situ during electrochemical doping and de-doping. P(g3T2) Young's Modulus changes from 69 MPa in the dry state to less than 10 MPa in hydrated state and then further decreases down to 0.4 MPa when electrochemically doped. With electrochemical doping-dedoping p(g3T2) Young's Modulus changes by more than one order of magnitude reversibly, representing the largest modulation reported for an OMIEC. Furthermore, we show that the electrolyte concentration affects the magnitude of the change, demonstrating that in less concentrated electrolytes more water is driven into the film due to osmosis and therefore the film becomes softer. Finally, we find that the oligo ethylene glycol side chain functionality, specifically the length and asymmetry, impacts the extent of the modulation. Our findings show that glycolated polythiophenes are promising materials for mechanical actuators with tunable modulus similar to a range of biological tissues and hence opening the pathway for new mechanostimulation devices.

Abstract:Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)—Polystyrene Sulfonate (PEDOT-PSS) is the most widely used conducting polymer as electrode material in organic (polymer) devices. However, commercially available PEDOT-PSS in our experiment has a relatively low conductivity that reduces the device performance when it is used for electrode material. The purchased PEDOT-PSS has been mixed with polar solvent dimethyl sulfoxide, which increases its conductivity from 0.07 to 30 S/cm. The enhanced conductivity has long-term stability at room temperature and short-term stability at high temperature (100 °C) in air ambient. The modified PEDOT-PSS has been inkjet printed and used as source/drain (S/D) electrodes for poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) thin-film transistors (TFTs). Unmodified PEDOT-PSS and gold have also been used as S/D electrodes for comparison. The TFTs with modified PEDOT-PSS electrodes show significantly improved performance over the devices with unmodified PEDOT-PSS electrodes and are similar to the devices with gold electrodes. The difference in device performance mainly results from parasitic series resistance. In the devices with unmodified PEDOTT-PSS, high electrode series resistance has several effects on devices, e.g., restricted current growth at high negative gate voltage, reduced on/off current ratio and current output capability.

Abstract:Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) remains the most investigated conjugated polymer in bioelectronics, due to its biocompatibility, high conductivity, and commercial availability. Despite these advantages, it suffers from structural and electronic instability, associated with the PSS component. Here, a graft copolymer based on ionised sulfonic modified PEDOT, poly(EDOTS-g-EDOT), was electrochemically synthesised with demonstrated structural and electronic stability and enhanced electrochemical performance. The graft copolymer was insoluble in water without crosslinking, and exhibited enhanced ion diffusion upon electrochemical switching, as revealed by its volumetric capacitance (159 ± 8 F cm-3), which was significantly higher than that of spin-coated PEDOT:PSS films (41 ± 5 F cm-3). Similarly, its performance as an active channel material in organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) was superior to the spin-coated PEDOT:PSS, as shown for instance by its high normalised transconductance (273 ± 79 S cm-1) and a significantly high ION/IOFF ratio (19 345 ± 1205). Its short- and long-term electronic stability were also confirmed with no drop in its output drain current, despite its high swelling degree. In contrast, the spin-coated PEDOT:PSS experienced a significant deterioration in its performance over the same operational time. The facile synthesis and improved performance of poly(EDOTS-g-EDOT) highlight the importance of innovative material design in overcoming existing operational shortcomings in electronic devices.

Abstract:The fabrication of a dry type conducting polymer actuator is presented using nitrile rubber (NBR) as the base material for the solid polymer electrolyte. A conducting polymer, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), was synthesized on the surface of the NBR by the chemical oxidation polymerization technique, and room temperature ionic liquids (RTIL) based on imidazolium salts, viz. 1-butyl-3-methyl imidazolium X [where X = BF4 −, PF6 −, (CF3SO2)2N−], were introduced onto the composite film. The effects of the anion size of the ionic liquids on the displacement of the actuator were investigated. The displacement increased with increasing anion-size of the ionic liquids. The cyclic voltammetric responses and the redox switching dynamics of the actuators were studied in different ionic liquids.

Abstract:Solution-processable poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is an important polymeric conductor used extensively in organic flexible, wearable, and stretchable optoelectronics. However, further enhancing its conductivity and long-term stability while maintaining its superb mechanical properties remains challenging. Here, a novel post-treatment approach to enhance the electrical properties and stability of sub-20-nm-thin PEDOT:PSS films processed from solution is introduced. The approach involves a sequential post-treatment with HNO3 and CsCl, resulting in a remarkable enhancement of the electrical conductivity of PEDOT:PSS films to over 5500 S cm-1, along with improved carrier mobility. The post-treated films exhibit remarkable air stability, retaining over 85% of their initial conductivity even after 270 days of storage. Various characterization techniques, including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, Hall effect measurements, and grazing incidence wide angle X-ray scattering, coupled with density functional theory calculations, provide insights into the structural changes and interactions responsible for these improvements. To demonstrate the potential for practical applications, the ultrathin PEDOT:PSS films are connected to an inorganic light-emitting diode with a battery, showcasing their suitability as transparent electrodes. This work presents a promising approach for enhancing the electrical conductivity of PEDOT:PSS while offering a comprehensive understanding of the underlying mechanisms that can guide further advances.
