Abstract:Interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) possessing a wide damping temperature range are commonly employed as damping materials that have been applied in numerous fields. But IPNs will gradually appear to fatigue microcracks and fracture when long‐term in the energy absorption and dissipation. So, the ability for IPNs to recover from damage is necessary which can considerably prolong their service life. Based on polyurethane (PU) elastomer and cross‐linked epoxy (EP), several innovative self‐healing interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) were designed and prepared in this research. The IPNs containing dynamic disulfide bond exhibit favorable damping and self‐healing properties. In detail, the loss factor of IPN‐80/20 is beyond 0.3 at temperatures between ‐0.8°C to 65.5 °C which covers the operating temperature range at room temperature. Multifunctional Polyurethane Networks Combining Strength, Toughness, and Fast Autonomous Self-Healing via the Synergy of Multiple Dynamic Bonds

Abstract:Polymeric materials exhibiting concomitant toughness, strength, and autonomous self-healing at room temperature are attractive in many applications. However, the mechanical strength often compromises the self-healing capability, making development of such materials challenging. Here, we developed multifunctional supramolecular polyurethane (PU) based elastomers of high toughness and fast autonomous self-healing capacity at ambient conditions via the synergy of quadruple H-bonds and dynamic boronic ester bonds. The design involves the use of reversible quadruple H-bonding ureido-pyrimidinone (UPy) motifs and soft olefin side chains to endow the elastomer with toughness and chain flexibility to support self-healing. Further cross-linking of the photoreactive olefin groups via dynamic boronic ester bonds by thiol-ene chemistry provided strength while maintaining self-healing at ambient conditions. The resulting elastomers (PU-Ene x ) showed high toughness (42.8 MJ m–3), strength (11.1 MPa), notch insensitivity, and high fracture energy (23.6 kJ cm–2). Notably, PU-Ene x demonstrated fast self-healing at room temperature, recovering almost 90% of their original toughness within 6 h postinjury. Finally, they also exhibited remarkable adhesive strength (1.0 MPa), high optical transparency, and strong blue fluorescence upon UV irradiation. The work demonstrates the development of a novel, multifunctional PU with outstanding mechanical properties and enhanced self-healing at ambient conditions, enabling an exciting range of new applications.

Abstract:In the recent years, generation of flexible, mechanically tough, shape memory (SM) polymers has gained a remarkable significance both in academic section and in the field of soft robotics, smart textiles, self-deployable structures (especially used in aerospace), actuators, bio-medical devices and so on. But designing of such materials poses a credible challenge to researchers in the field. Hence, in this work, we develop a bis(hydroxyalkyl)-poly(dimethylsiloxane) capped-(3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane functionalized-hydroxy iron oxide anchored-reduced graphene oxide nanohybrid which serves as a reinforcing agent for the generation of nanocomposites with SM, self-tightening and hydrophobic attributes. The prepared polystyrene/thermoplastic polyurethane (PS/TPU) interpenetrating network (IPN) nanocomposites recover their original shape at a faster rate (within 20–40s upon thermal heating and within 100–140s upon exposure to sunlight) compared to other similar type SM materials (require h to min). Moreover, the nanocomposites also showed thermally actuated artificial muscle-like and self-tightening behaviors. In addition, the nanocomposite containing 1 wt% nanohybrid demonstrated >200% increase in tensile strength, >120% increase in initial thermal degradation temperature, and strong surface hydrophobicity (static contact angle >120°). Therefore, the reported nanocomposites have considerable prospect for different smart applications.

Abstract:Self-healing polymers with microphase separation structure typically require external stimuli to achieve self-healing, and their performance often degrades. To solve these issues, we introduce tertiary amine and carboxyl groups into polymer. The intermolecular ionic interactions and H-bonds contribute to the formation of microphase separation structures, endowing polyurethane elastomers (PU-n) outstanding mechanical properties with a maximum tensile strength and toughness of 20.61 MPa and 59.02 MJ/m 3 , respectively. The self-healing of the prepared PU-n can be achieved at room temperature and accelerated significantly by water because hard phases can be dissociated, resulting in enhanced molecular movement. After self-healing with water, the enhanced molecular movement and further ionization of ionic groups lead to stronger H-bonds and ionic interactions, promoting more distinct microphase separation. Thus, the mechanical strength is strengthened and the self-healing efficiency can reach 104.72 %. The enhanced molecular movement and strengthened intermolecular interactions when self-healing with water can also be verified through in-depth analysis of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of the self-healing process. Furthermore, PU-n display remarkable shape memory and can be recycled through exposure to solvents and hot water. This study provides a novel and general method for preparing materials that can self-heal with water and self-strengthen after self-healing.

Abstract:Polyurethane (PU), designed with pre-polymer method involving polyol as cross-linker, has been utilized for shape memory applications. Neat PU or PU-PS (polystyrene) interpenetrating network (IPN) samples have been prepared. Functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (FMWCNTs) have been utilized as reinforcements. PU composites have been studied for shape recovery time and found better than neat PU. 1wt% incorporation of FMWCNTs in PU has reduced shape recovery time to 22 s for 100% shape recovery, in comparison to neat PU with 62 s of 100% shape recovery. PU-PS IPN has reduced 100% shape recovery time to 17s. Superior hydrogen bonding in neat PU has been suggested as per longer shape recovery time against thermal actuation, in comparison to PU composite and IPNs with FMWCNTs. Decreased thermal stability has been observed with FMWCNTs incorporation, indicating enhanced heat dissipation. Field emission scanning electron microscopy analyses confirmed the difference of morphologies in neat PU, PU composite, and IPNs. A distinctive filler-matrix interaction in IPNs has been observed. XRD confirmed the presence of amorphous component. Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry and Thermal Gravimetric Analysis have been utilized for analyses. Shape recovery study has been made by a simple experimental set up prepared in lab.

Abstract:The preparation of functional polyurethane materials with high strength, toughness, and excellent self-healing ability is currently challenging. In this study, a multifunctional bi-dynamic supramolecular crosslinked network PU elastomer was successfully prepared by introducing ionic bonds and aromatic disulfide bonds into a PU matrix. The resulting ionic PU elastomers exhibited impressive mechanical properties, including high tensile strength (39.9 ± 4.4 MPa) and excellent elongation at break (1930 ± 345 %). They also demonstrated efficient self-healing capability (94.4 %), recyclability and processability. The distribution of hydrophilic ion bonds within the polymer networks enabled the elastomers to possess water-induced shape memory and antibacterial activity. Additionally, the hydrophilicity of the elastomers provided a self-cleaning ability when used as a coating material. The covalent bonding of the cations with the PU matrix prevented the leaching of bactericidal substances, ensuring good biocompatibility of the ionic PU. Furthermore, a double-layered self-healing composite flexible sensor was developed using the ionic PU as the substrate and carboxylated carbon nanotubes (CNTs-COOH) as the conductive medium to detect human motion. These multifunctional ionic PU elastomers offer great potential for the design and preparation of robust materials with self-healing ability for various applications across multiple fields.

A Transparent, Highly Stretchable, Autonomous Self-Healing Poly(dimethyl siloxane) Elastomer

Abstract:An innovative self-healing polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) elastomer, namely, PDMS-TFB, is reported by incorporating the reversibly dynamic imine bond as the self-healing points into the PDMS networks. The PDMS-TFB elastomer features good optical transmittance (80%) in full visible light region, high stretchability (≈700%), and excellent autonomous self-healing ability at room temperature. Surprisingly, the self-healing behavior can take place in water and even at a temperature as low as -20 °C in air, showing a promising outlook for broader applications. As a proof-of-concept, this study demonstrates the use of the PDMS-TFB elastomer for preparing anticorrosion coating and adhesive layer, and also the use of such an elastomer to be the platform for fabricating the flexible interconnector and chemical sensor. Remarkably, no significant difference is observed between the pristine and healed samples. Taking full advantage of these unique properties, it is anticipated that such a PDMS-TFB elastomer shows wide applications in the fields of materials science, electronics, biology, optics, etc.

Abstract:Currently, it is a challenge to prepare elastomers with high mechanical properties and high self-healing efficiency. In the present work, by mixing a polyurethane (PU) prepolymer with a PU elastomer containing 2-ureido-4[1H]-pyrimidinone (UPy) groups, we obtained a new PU elastomer based on interpenetrating networks. In this condition, four different structures coexist in the interpenetrating polymer networks: covalent cross-linking network, metal-ion coordination network, multiple hydrogen bond network and flexible blocks. The experimental results demonstrated that the presence of metal-ion coordination network, multiple hydrogen bond network and flexible blocks is beneficial for the improvement in healing efficiency, while the coexistence of covalent cross-linking network, metal-ion coordination network and multiple hydrogen bond network benefits to improve the mechanical properties.
Dual network poly(dimethyl siloxane)–impact hardening polymer composite with autonomous self-healing and soft–stiffness switch abilities

Abstract:Smart protection materials have been widely used in personal and military fields. In this scheme, a series of poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS)–impact hardening polymer (IHP) composite elastomers, with self-healing abilities and soft–stiffness switch abilities, were fabricated. PDMS, a flexible polymer with excellent mechanical properties, can function as a trestle, helping maintain the shape of the IHP, while the IHP can absorb and dissipate the impact energy to play a protective role. Under the joint action of PDMS and IHP, the fracture toughness of PDMS–IHP increased from 359 % to 464 % as the strain rate increased from 10 to 400 mm min -1 , whereas that of the unmodified PDMS elastomer decreased from 392 % to 120 % within the same strain rate range. Furthermore, the impact energy absorption efficiency of PDMS–IHP increased to 85.97 % at an impact speed of 4.43 m s -1 , showing excellent performance in the protection of impact. In addition, PDMS–IHP showed good self-healing ability, with a toughness healing efficiency of 83.09 % within 48 h. These excellent properties make PDMS–IHP composite candidates suitable for applications in both emerging and well-developed fields.

Mechanical Robust, Self-Healable Polyurethane Elastomer Enabled by Hierarchical Hydrogen Bonds and Disulfide Bonds

Abstract:The fabrication of mechanically robust and self-healing polymeric materials remains a formidable challenge. To address the drawbacks, a core strategy is proposed based on the dynamic hard domains formed by hierarchical hydrogen bonds and disulfide bonds. The dynamic hard domains dissipate considerable stress energy during stretching. Meanwhile, the synergistic effect of hierarchical hydrogen bonds and disulfide bonds greatly enhances the relaxation dynamics of the PU network chains, thus accelerating network reorganization. Therefore, this designed strategy effectively solves the inherent drawback between cohesive energy and relaxation dynamics of the PU network. As a result, the PU elastomer has excellent mechanical properties (9.9 MPa and 44.87 MJ/m3) and high self-healing efficiency (96.2%). This approach provides a universal but valid strategy to fabricate high-performance self-healing polymeric materials. Meanwhile, such materials can be extended to emerging fields such as flexible robotics and wearable electronics.

Abstract:By introducing thermoplastic polyurethane as a toughening phase into DA reaction in‐situ polymerization through solution blending, a uniform interlocking polymer network DFB‐TPU can be formed. Due to the reversible covalent chemistry of DA reactions, new functionalities such as self‐healing, shape memory and recyclability are introduced. Covalent adaptive networks (CANs) epoxy based on the Diels‐Alder (DA) reaction usually are commonly used for self‐healing materials. However, poor toughness greatly limits its application in innovative materials. Herein, based on retaining the excellent dynamic characteristics of DA reactive CANs, we introduced thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) in situ during crosslinking, improving the composite material's strength and toughness. A multicomponent polymeric system with advanced performance can be produced by the individual components on the condition of the synergistic hybrid effects. Molecular‐level interlocking polymer networks between the chain entanglement of TPU and the reversible covalent crosslink of DFB were formed by the topological reorganization of these two immiscible polymers. As the gelation proceeds, a homogenous structure instead of conventional phase separation is formed. When the mixing ratio of DFB and TPU is 1:1, the tensile strength of the prepared sample reaches 35 MPa, and the elongation at break reaches 110%. At the same time, the composites possess good thermal stability and solvent resistance due to the presence of interlocking polymer networks. Furthermore, these DFB‐TPU composites show excellent shape memory, self‐healing, and closed‐loop recycling properties.

Abstract:Improvement of toughness is still a challenge for self-healing materials. Most of self-healing materials difficultly balance the mechanical and self-healing property. Here, a molecular design strategy of copolymer is proposed based on three combinations of reversible imine bond, chain motion and thermosensitive hydrogen bond together. The approach initially forms a co-continuous microphase separation structure and then cross-linked by aromatic imine via esterification reaction and Schiff base reaction, which features efficient self-healing, ultrahigh strength and toughness. The resultant elastomer exhibits a high stress at break (≈3 MPa) and high fracture strain (≈600 %). Additionally, the elastomer can reach 95 % self-healing efficiency after healing at 100 °C for 12 h. Extra reversible imine crosslinking displays a doubly promotion for fracture stress, and unchanging strain as well as 1times increase for self-healing efficiency, compared with merely chain motion and hydrogen bonding. This elastomer can be successfully spun into stretchable, conductive, self-healing filaments with core-shell structure by wet spinning and coating methods. It shows excellent corrosion resistance against NaCl, and conductive and self-healing property after coating by PANI polymer. This new type of self-healing polymer is promising to expand the application in future tissue engineering, soft robotics, and biomedical devices.

An intelligent polymer composite with self-lubricating and self-healing functionalities

Abstract:An intelligent polymer composite with self-lubricating and self-healing functionalities is reported. The high strength intrinsic self-healing material that integrated hydrogen bond interactions into covalently linked networks was used as the matrix and the surface functionalized poly-alpha-olefin oil-containing microcapsules acted as lubricant fillers, which integrated the advantages of intrinsic self-healing and external self-lubricating strategies to realize organic combination of lubrication and healing functions in one system. The tensile and compressive strengths of the bifunctional composite can reach 59 MPa and 104 MPa, while the coefficient of friction (COF) and wear rate can reduce to 0.032 and 10 −8 mm 3 /Nm. Besides, the bifunctional composite exhibited an excellent self-healing ability of scratch and the volume self-healing efficiency of 78% was achieved at 100 °C for 3 h. The developed high strength polymer material with self-lubricating and self-healing functionalities is highly expected for engineering applications.

Abstract:A strong and tough self-healing elastomer is prepared based on double reversible networks consisting of ionic interactions and Diels-Alder (D-A) crosslinks. The elastomer is synthesized through one-pot copolymerization of a pair of oppositely charged monomers and furan functionalized methacrylate (FMA), which is then crosslinked with 1,1'-(Methylenebis(4,1-phenylene))bis(1H-pyrrole-2,5-dione) (BMI) via Diels-Alder (D-A) reaction. The oppositely charged monomers form ionic bonds which can segregate into aggregates with a wide distribution of size. Under heating or external force, the aggregates can dissociate from small to big ones to dissipate amount of energy and endow the materials with high mechanical properties (13 MPa in strength, 480% in stretchability). While the D-A crosslinks act as covalent bonds at room temperature and endow the materials with high elasticity and fast shape recovery ability. These two reversible networks with different dynamics contribute to the multiscale self-healing properties of the elastomer. As a result, the self-healing efficiency of the elastomer is as high as 86%.

Abstract:Ionic interactions offer the highest non‐covalent cohesive strength in supramolecular assemblies. In spite of that, they have been consistently underestimated in the development of self‐healing materials due to their lack of directionality and association specificity. In this paper, ionic moieties are introduced as side‐chain pendants in poly(urea‐urethane) siloxane‐based polymers, aiming to obtain a strong yet flexible elastomer with the capability to recover from a damaged state. The synthesis was carried out by a two‐step polymerization involving polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) diamine‐terminated, isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) and a chain extender providing the required ionic functionality. Internal phase separation allowed the material to show its elastomeric behavior. After preparation of the blend by mechanical mixing, the formation of ionic interactions was checked for by FT‐IR spectroscopy, rheological analysis and tensile tests. Healing of notch damage was evaluated both with respect to tensile strength and fracture toughness. At room temperature (21°C) and humidity (30% RH) the maximum recovery measured at 14 days was 47%. Self‐healing dependence on humidity and temperature was assessed, resulting in further improvements (up to 100%) as molecular mobility was increased by both conditions.

However, achieving an optimal balance of these properties within a single material is a formidable challenge. In this study, a polyurethane elastomer, TUPU-75, with excellent performance was prepared using a dual-hard-segment strategy through polycondensation of dihydroxy-functionalized tetraaryl succinonitrile (TASN-diol), ureidopyrimidinone (UPy), polytetrahydrofuran (PTMEG 1000), and dicyclohexylmethane diisocyanate (HMDI). By controlling the ratio of dynamic covalent bonds to quadruple hydrogen bonds, the mechanical properties of the material can be adjusted. When the ratio of the two groups is 1:3, the prepared elastomer exhibits excellent mechanical properties (a mechanical strength of 18.05 MPa and a tensile strain of 1241%) and room-temperature self-healing ability (a healing efficiency of 96.7% for completely fractured TUPU-75 after 24 h of healing at room temperature). Furthermore, the presence of dynamic covalent chromophores confers excellent thermochromic properties to TUPU-75. We hope that this exceptionally durable, color-changing, and self-healing material could offer novel perspectives on the development of multifunctional polyurethane materials.
An ultrafast self-healing polydimethylsiloxane elastomer with persistent sealing performance

Abstract:Silicone waterproofing sealants are susceptible to either rupture or scratches due to their low scratch resistance, leading to reduced sealing performance. Herein, an ultrafast self-healing polydimethylsiloxane elastomer is developed to solve this problem. The novel polydimethylsiloxane elastomer, obtained by crosslinking a long chain of poly(dimethylsiloxane) with a tetra-functional biphenyl unit via an aldimine polycondensation reaction, exhibits ultrafast self-healing properties (can be efficiently healed at room temperature within 60 s) although it is quite tough and strong (with Young's modulus of 120.6 +/- 8.2 kPa, elongation >8000%, and adhesive stress values of 30-700 kPa for various substrates). As demonstrated by water absorption tests and self-designed water bag experiments, this new polymer can completely self-heal punctured holes or scratches in seconds and therefore maintain its excellent sealing property. This unique material will have wide commercial applications not only as a sealant, but also in many other industrial fields, including electrochemical sensors, wearable electronics, and biomedical adhesives.
Autonomous Self-healing and Superior Tough Polyurethane Elastomers Enabled by Strong and Highly Dynamic Hard Domains

Abstract:Self-healing materials shows exceptional applications for their high stability and longevity. However, a great challenge of the application of self-healing materials is the tradeoff between mechanical robustness and room temperature self-healing. In order to address this tradeoff, inspired by the characteristic that small molecules of living organisms self-assemble into large protein molecules by non-covalent interactions, we constructed polyurethane with highly dynamic and strong hard domains composed by the dense hydrogen bonds and π-π interactions between the phenylurea groups at the end of the side chain. The prepared elastomer (PU-HU2-60) exhibits exceptional tensile performance (tensile strength is 18.27 MPa and ultimate elongation is 904.6%) and crack tolerance (fracture energy is 57.78 kJ m-2), surpassing most room temperature self-healing materials. After being damaged, the dynamic change process of hydrogen bonds and π-π interactions enables elastomer a high self-healing efficiency of 92.15% at room temperature. By molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and experiments, we can verify that hydrogen bonds and π-π interactions promote the formation of hard domains and the autonomous self-healing of elastomers. The prepared elastomers can also be recycled and shows ultra-high and restorable adhesion between metals. This work demonstrates a new strategy to balance the mechanical and self-healing properties elastomers to expand their practical application such as metal adhesive.
