Abstract:Present worldwide difficulties in healthcare and the environment have motivated the investigation and research of novel materials in an effort to find novel techniques to address the current challenges and requirements. In particular, the use of nanomaterials has demonstrated a significant promise in the fight against bacterial infections and the problem of antibiotic resistance. Metal nanoparticles and carbon-based nanomaterials in particular have been highlighted for their exceptional abilities to inhibit many types of bacteria and pathogens. In order for these materials to be as effective as possible, synthetic techniques are crucial. Therefore, in this review article, we highlight some recent developments in the design and synthesis of various nanomaterials, including metal nanoparticles (e.g., Ag, Zn, or Cu), metal hybrid nanomaterials, and the synthesis of multi-metallic hybrid nanostructured materials. Following that, examples of these materials’ applications in antimicrobial performance targeted at eradicating multi-drug resistant bacteria, material protection such as microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC), or additives in construction materials have been described.

Abstract:Nanotechnology is expected to open new avenues to fight and prevent disease using atomic scale tailoring of materials. Among the most promising nanomaterials with antibacterial properties are metallic nanoparticles, which exhibit increased chemical activity due to their large surface to volume ratios and crystallographic surface structure. The study of bactericidal nanomaterials is particularly timely considering the recent increase of new resistant strains of bacteria to the most potent antibiotics. This has promoted research in the well known activity of silver ions and silver-based compounds, including silver nanoparticles. The present work studies the effect of silver nanoparticles in the range of 1-100 nm on Gram-negative bacteria using high angle annular dark field (HAADF) scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). Our results indicate that the bactericidal properties of the nanoparticles are size dependent, since the only nanoparticles that present a direct interaction with the bacteria preferentially have a diameter of approximately 1-10 nm.

Abstract:Background: The world's most common cause of illness and death is still bacterial infections. According to a World Health Organization report, bacterial resistance to antibiotics poses a serious threat to global public health. In recent years, the use of nanoparticles (NPs) as an antibiotic alternative has increased. Results: Due to the nanoparticles' inherent antibacterial activity, metal and metal oxide nanoparticles are the most promising nanomaterials for biological applications. Although nanoparticles have intriguing antibacterial properties, their use in medical applications is currently restricted due to the lack of clear understanding of the mechanisms underlying their action. Conclusion: The main focus of this review was the interactions between bacteria and the antibacterial capabilities of nanoparticles. Membrane contact, cation release, biomolecule oxidation, production of reactive oxygen species, and reactive oxygen species are some ways bacteria can kill themselves. Examining how NP affects gene and protein regulation patterns (transcriptomic and proteomic) is crucial.

Abstract:<p>This review details the antimicrobial applications of inorganic nanomaterials of mostly metallic form, and the augmentation of activity by surface conjugation of peptide ligands. The review is subdivided into three main sections; of which the first describes the antimicrobial activity of inorganic nanomaterials against gram-positive, gram-negative and multidrug-resistant bacterial strains. The second section highlights the range of antimicrobial peptides and the drug resistance strategies employed by bacterial species to counter lethality. The final part discusses the role of antimicrobial peptide-decorated inorganic nanomaterials in the fight against bacterial strains that show resistance. General strategies for the preparation of antimicrobial peptides and their conjugation to nanomaterials are discussed, emphasizing the use of elemental and metallic oxide nanomaterials. Importantly, the permeation of antimicrobial peptides through the bacterial membrane is shown to aid the delivery of nanomaterials into bacterial cells. By judicious use of targeting ligands, the nanomaterial becomes able to differentiate between bacterial and mammalian cells and thus, reduce side effects. Moreover, peptide conjugation to the surface of a nanomaterial will alter surface chemistry in ways that lead to reduction in toxicity and improvements in biocompatibility.</p>

Abstract:The understanding of the interactions between biological systems and nanoengineered devices is crucial in several research fields, including tissue engineering, biomechanics, synthetic biology and biomedical devices. This review discusses the current knowledge of the interactions between bacteria and abiotic nanostructured substrates. First, the effects of randomly organized nanoscale topography on bacterial adhesion and persistence are described. Second, the interactions between microorganisms and highly organized/ordered micro- and nano-patterns are discussed. Finally, we survey the most promising approaches for the fabrication of silver polymeric nanocomposites, which have important applications as antimicrobial materials. The advantages, drawbacks and limitations of such nanotechnologies are critically discussed in view of potential future applications.

Abstract:Nanomaterial‐based antibacterial agents emerge as promising solutions to combat bacteria and inhibit their proliferation. However, selective elimination of specific bacteria remains crucial. This review examines nanomaterial‐based antibacterial agents and their mechanisms, including hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions, protein and nucleic acid leakage, selective labelling and killing, extracellular and intracellular ROS generation, and damage to inner and outer membranes, all contributing to selective antibacterial activity. Bacterial infections continue to threaten public health due to limitations in rapid and accurate diagnostic techniques. While broad‐spectrum antibiotics offer empirical treatment, their overuse has fuelled the emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) pathogens, posing a critical global public health challenge. In this critical scenario, nanomaterial‐based antibacterial agents emerge as a promising solution to combat bacteria and inhibit their proliferation. However, selective elimination of pathogenic bacteria is paramount. This review highlights recent advancements in developing nanomaterials for selective antibacterial activity. We categorize these agents based on their mode of action, exploring how they selectively interact with bacteria and their potential antibacterial mechanisms. This review offers crucial insights for researchers exploring the potential of nanotechnology to address the growing threat of AMR.

Abstract:Carbon nanomaterials like graphene, carbon nanotubes, fullerenes and the various forms of diamond have attracted great attention for their vast potential regarding applications in electrical engineering and as biomaterials. The study of the antibacterial properties of carbon nanomaterials provides fundamental information on the possible toxicity and environmental impact of these materials. Furthermore, as a result of the increasing prevalence of resistant bacteria strains, the development of novel antibacterial materials is of great importance. This article reviews current research efforts on characterizing the antibacterial activity of carbon nanomaterials from the perspective of colloid and interface science. Building on these fundamental findings, recent functionalization strategies for enhancing the antibacterial effect of carbon nanomaterials are described. The review concludes with a comprehensive outlook that summarizes the most important discoveries and trends regarding antibacterial carbon nanomaterials.

The activity of Ag-NPs synthesized by physical method, this study was performed by observing the bacterial cells treated or not with Ag-NPs on bacterial conductivity, antibiotic susceptibility, molecular and morphological cellular structure by transmission TEM as results indicated that E.Coli and S. aureus treated with Ag-NPs can inhibit bacterial growth and significant increase in antibiotic susceptibility to protein, cell wall and DNA inhibitors. Results of dielectric relaxation and TEM indicated molecular and morphological changes. It will be concluded that Ag-NPs could be used as an excellent effective antimicrobial material on microorganisms.

Abstract:Nanomaterials and nanotechnologies have been expected to provide innovative platforms for addressing antibacterial challenges, with potential to even deal with bacterial infections involving drug-resistance. The current review summarizes recent progress over the last 3 years in the field of antibacterial nanomaterials with a photothermal conversion effect. We classify these photothermal nanomaterials into four functional categories: carbon-based nanoconjugates of graphene derivatives or carbon nanotubes, noble metal nanomaterials mainly from gold and silver, metallic compound nanocomposites such as copper sulfide and molybdenum sulfide, and polymeric as well as other nanostructures. Different categories can be assembled with each other to enhance the photothermal effects and the antibacterial activities. The review describes their fabrication processes, unique properties, antibacterial modes, and potential healthcare applications.

Abstract:The emergence and global spread of bacterial resistance to currently available antibiotics underscore the urgent need for new alternative antibacterial agents. Recent studies on the application of nanomaterials as antibacterial agents have demonstrated their great potential for management of infectious diseases. Among these antibacterial nanomaterials, carbon-based nanomaterials (CNMs) have attracted much attention due to their unique physicochemical properties and relatively higher biosafety. Here, a comprehensive review of the recent research progress on antibacterial CNMs is provided, starting with a brief description of the different kinds of CNMs with respect to their physicochemical characteristics. Then, a detailed introduction to the various mechanisms underlying antibacterial activity in these materials is given, including physical/mechanical damage, oxidative stress, photothermal/photocatalytic effect, lipid extraction, inhibition of bacterial metabolism, isolation by wrapping, and the synergistic effect when CNMs are used in combination with other antibacterial materials, followed by a summary of the influence of the physicochemical properties of CNMs on their antibacterial activity. Finally, the current challenges and an outlook for the development of more effective and safer antibacterial CNMs are discussed.

Abstract:The growing increase in antibiotic-resistant bacteria has led to the search for new antibacterial agents capable of overcoming the resistance problem. In recent years, nanoparticles (NPs) have been increasingly used to target bacteria as an alternative to antibiotics. The most promising nanomaterials for biomedical applications are metal and metal oxide NPs, due to their intrinsic antibacterial activity. Although NPs show interesting antibacterial properties, the mechanisms underlying their action are still poorly understood, limiting their use in clinical applications. In this review, an overview of the mechanisms underlying the antibacterial activity of metal and metal oxide NPs will be provided, relating their efficacy to: (i) bacterial strain; (ii) higher microbial organizations (biofilm); (iii) and physico-chemical properties of NPs. In addition, bacterial resistance strategies will be also discussed to better evaluate the feasibility of the different treatments adopted in the clinical safety fields. Finally, a wide analysis on recent biomedical applications of metal and metal oxide NPs with antibacterial activity will be provided.

Abstract:Nano‐antibacterial materials are important in the antibacterial and antibiofilm field because of their excellent physical and chemical properties. This review focuses on new physicochemical antibacterial strategies and versatile antibacterial nanomaterials, especially the mechanism and types of 2D antibacterial nanomaterials. This review also provides guidance on the development direction of antibiotic‐free disinfections in the antibacterial field in the future. Bacterial infection continues to be an increasing global health problem with the most widely accepted treatment paradigms restricted to antibiotics. However, the overuse and misuse of antibiotics have triggered multidrug resistance of bacteria, frustrating therapeutic outcomes, and leading to higher mortality rates. Even worse, the tendency of bacteria to form biofilms on living and nonliving surfaces further increases the difficulty in confronting bacteria because the extracellular matrix can act as a robust barrier to prevent the penetration of antibiotics and resist environmental damage. As a result, the inability to eliminate bacteria and biofilms often leads to persistent infection, implant failure, and device damage. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to develop alternative antimicrobial agents while avoiding the generation of bacterial resistance to prevent the large‐scale growth of bacterial resistance. In recent years, nano‐antibacterial materials have played a vital role in the antibacterial field because of their excellent physical and chemical properties. This review focuses on new physicochemical antibacterial strategies and versatile antibacterial nanomaterials, especially the mechanism and types of 2D antibacterial nanomaterials. Antibacterial and Antibiofilm Activity of Chemically and Biologically Synthesized Silver Nanoparticles

Abstract:Bacterial biofilms are a significant problem in the food industry, as they are difficult to eradicate and represent a threat to consumer health. Currently, nanoparticles as an alternative to traditional chemical disinfectants have garnered much attention due to their broad-spectrum antibacterial activity and low toxicity. In this study, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized by a biological method using a Jacaranda mimosifolia flower aqueous extract and by a chemical method, and the factors affecting both syntheses were optimized. The nanoparticles were characterized by Ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometry, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Dynamic light scattering (DLS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with a spherical and uniform shape. The antibacterial and antibiofilm formation activity was carried out on bacterial species of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus with the capacity to form biofilm. The minimum inhibitory concentration was 117.5 μg/mL for the chemical and 5.3 μg/mL for the biological nanoparticles. Both types of nanoparticles showed antibiofilm activity in the qualitative Congo red test and in the quantitative microplate test. Antibiofilm activity tests on fresh lettuce showed that biological nanoparticles decreased the population of S. aureus and P. aeruginosa by 0.63 and 2.38 logarithms, respectively, while chemical nanoparticles had little microbial reduction. In conclusion, the biologically synthesized nanoparticles showed greater antibiofilm activity. Therefore, these results suggest their potential application in the formulation of sanitizing products for the food and healthcare industries.

Abstract:Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are the most investigated antibacterial agents against multidrug resistant (MDR) pathogens. They can lead to cellular death by means of different mechanisms, damaging several cell compartments, from the external membrane, to enzymes, DNA and proteins; this simultaneous attack amplifies the toxic effect on bacteria with respect to traditional antibiotics. The effectiveness of AgNPs against MDR bacteria is strongly correlated with their chemical and morphological properties, which influence the pathways involved in cellular damage. In this review, AgNPs’ size, shape and modification by functional groups or other materials are reported, both to investigate the different synthetic pathways correlated with nanoparticles’ modifications and to evaluate the related effect on their antibacterial activity. Indeed, understanding the synthetic conditions for obtaining performing antibacterial AgNPs could help to tailor new and improved silver-based agents to combat multidrug resistance.

Abstract:<p>Microbial colonization on material surfaces is ubiquitous. Biofilms derived from surface‐colonized microbes pose serious problems to the society from both an economical perspective and a health concern. Incorporation of antimicrobial nanocompounds within or on the surface of materials, or by coatings, to prevent microbial adhesion or kill the microorganisms after their attachment to biofilms, represents an important strategy in an increasingly challenging field. Over the last decade, many studies have been devoted to preparing meta‐based nanomaterials that possess antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal activities to combat pathogen‐related diseases. Herein, an overview on the state‐of‐the‐art antimicrobial nanosized metal‐based compounds is provided, including metal and metal oxide nanoparticles as well as transition metal nanosheets. The antimicrobial mechanism of these nanostructures and their biomedical applications such as catheters, implants, medical delivery systems, tissue engineering, and dentistry are discussed. Their properties as well as potential caveats such as cytotoxicity, diminishing efficacy, and induction of antimicrobial resistance of materials incorporating these nanostructures are reviewed to provide a backdrop for future research.</p>

Abstract:Nanotechnology has emerged as a cornerstone in contemporary research, marked by the advent of advanced technologies aimed at nanoengineering materials with diverse applications, particularly to address challenges in human health. Among these challenges, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has risen as a significant and pressing threat to public health, creating obstacles in preventing and treating persistent diseases. Despite efforts in recent decades to combat AMR, global trends indicate an ongoing and concerning increase in AMR. The primary contributors to the escalation of AMR are the misuse and overuse of various antimicrobial agents in healthcare settings. This has led to severe consequences not only in terms of compromised treatment outcomes but also in terms of substantial financial burdens. The economic impact of AMR is reflected in skyrocketing healthcare costs attributed to heightened hospital admissions and increased drug usage. To address this critical issue, it is imperative to implement effective strategies for antimicrobial therapies. This comprehensive review will explore the latest scientific breakthroughs within the metal–organic frameworks and the use of mesoporous metallic oxide derivates as antimicrobial agents. We will explore their biomedical applications in human health, shedding light on promising avenues for combating AMR. Finally, we will conclude the current state of research and offer perspectives on the future development of these nanomaterials in the ongoing battle against AMR.

Abstract:The high wave of antibiotic bacterial resistance has addressed an importance for administration of different antibacterial agents, as silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs). However, many investigators still suffer conflict in the mechanistic antimicrobial action of Ag NPs and Ag + ions. In this regard, our study investigated the comparative antimicrobial action of different sizes of Ag NPs as 8 (nAg1) and 29 (nAg2) nm, in comparison with silver nitrate (AgNO 3 ) against five different bacterial species; Aeromonas hydrophila ( A. hydrophila ), Pseudomonas putida ( Ps. putida ), Escherichia coli ( E. coli ), Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ), and Bacillus subtilis ( B. subtilis ) using agar diffusion assay and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). The key role of the size of nanomaterials was detected, as the smaller Ag NPs (nAg1) showed more antimicrobial action than the larger particles. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies demonstrated the different mechanistic antibacterial actions of Ag NPs and AgNO 3 . The effect of combining Ag NPs with antibiotics was also investigated. Synergistic effect of combining Ag NPs with ampicillin was detected against S. aureus , in a size-dependent manner as well. To summarize, our results point towards the major role played by the size of Ag NPs in their antimicrobial effects and the different toxic mechanisms of actions induced by Ag NPs and AgNO 3 .
