Abstract:The bright colours of noble metal particles have attracted considerable interest since historical times, where they were used as decorative pigments in stained glass windows. More recently, the tuneable optical properties of metal nanoparticles and their addressability via spectroscopic techniques have brought them back into the forefront of fundamental and applied research fields. Much of the recent attention concerning metal nanoparticles such as gold and silver has been their use as small-volume, ultra-sensitive label-free optical sensors. Plasmonic nanoparticles act in this case as transducers that convert changes in the local refractive index into spectral shifts of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) band. This LSPR-shift assay is a general technique for measuring binding affinities and rates from any molecule that induces a change in the local refractive index around the metallic nanostructures. By attaching molecular recognition elements (chemical or biological ligands) on the nanostructures, specificity and selectivity to the analyte of interest are introduced into the nanosensor. In this review, we will discuss the different methods used to fabricate plasmonic nanosensors. A special emphasis will be given to techniques used to link plasmonic nanostructures to surfaces. While the difference between colorimetric and refractive index sensing approaches will be briefly described, the importance to distinguish between bulk refractive index (RI) sensing and molecular near-field refractive index sensing will be discussed. The recent progress made in the development of novel surface functionalization strategies together with the formation of optically and mechanically stable LSPR sensors will be highlighted.

Abstract:Noble metal nanoparticles show specific optical properties due to the excitation of localized surface plasmons that make them attractive candidates for highly sensitive bionanosensors. The underlying physical principle is either an analyte-induced modification of the dielectric properties of the medium surrounding the nanoparticle or an increase of the excitation and emission rates of an optically active analyte by the resonantly enhanced plasmon field. Either way, besides the nanoparticle geometry the dielectric properties of the metal and nanoscale surface roughness play an important role for the sensing performance. As the underlying principles are however not yet well understood, we aim here at an improved understanding by analyzing the optical characteristics of lithographically fabricated nanoparticles with different crystallinity and roughness parameters. We vary these parameters by thermal annealing and apply a thin gold film as a model system to retrieve modifications in the dielectric function. We investigate, on one hand, extinction spectra that reflect the far-field properties of the plasmonic excitation and, on the other hand, surface-enhanced Raman spectra that serve as a near-field probe. Our results provide improved insight into localized surface plasmons and their application in bionanosensing.

Abstract:Surface plasmon modes originated from various metallic nanostructures possess unique features of strong nanoscale light confinement and enhancement with tunable energy, which make them attractive and promising for a variety of applications such as sensing, solar cell, and lasing. Here, we have investigated the interaction between localized and propagating surface plasmons in a structure consisting of a gold nanobar array and a thick gold film, separated by a silica dielectric spacer layer. It is found that the reflection spectrum of the designed plasmonic structure can be readily tailored by changing the gold nanobar size, array period and the spacer layer thickness. Moreover, the strong coupling between the localized and propagating modes can result in an anticrossing behavior and even induce a Fano-like asymmetric lineshape. Importantly, the sensitivity and the figure of merit (FoM) of this plasmonic system can reach as high as 936 nm/RIU and 112, respectively. Our study offers a new, simple, efficient and controllable way to design the plasmonic systems with desired modes coupling and spectral lineshapes for different applications.

Abstract:By independently tuning the structure parameters of the nanorods in nanohole arrays (NRinNH), the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR)-induced extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) mode and the surface plasmon polariton (SPP)-induced EOT modes can be coupled to introduce a mode splitting phenomenon in a simple one-layer plasmonic nanostructure. We demonstrate that the coupling and energy exchange of the two different types of EOT modes of the NRinNH structure can simultaneously improve the near -field electromagnetic enhancement and spectral resolution of the LSPR-induced EOT peak, while they reduce the spectral resolution of the SPP-induced EOT modes. The hybrid modes of the NRinNH structure can be tuned to the NIR wavelength region by the length of the NR, of which the large resonance wavelength is highly preferred for improving the refractive index sensitivity (RIS) of the plasmonic sensor. In addition, using the difference in the polarization transmission spectra of NRinNH structures, the figure of merit (FOM) of the sensor performance can be significantly improved. The effect of coupling on different EOT modes in plasmonic sensing is systematically studied. A high RIS of 1200.6 nm/RIU and a high FOM of 279.2 RIU-1 are achieved. This provides guidance for the design of LSPR sensors based on complex NH structures with high FOM.

Abstract:The far-field and near-field properties of a spherical nematic liquid crystal (NLC) coated metal nanoparticle (NPs) have been investigated in an external field, basing on the quasistatic theory. The resonant wavelength is tunable by varying metallic material of core, anisotropy extent and thickness of liquid crystals (LCs). Abstract:Doped metal oxide nanocrystals (NCs) provide a highly tunable platform for localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in the near- to mid-IR. This tunability can be achieved synthetically, through the size, shape, and composition of the NCs, or post-synthetically through reversible redox reactions, enabling a host of emerging applications. While the broad strokes of this tunability have been understood for a decade, over the last few years, there has been tremendous progress in understanding the relationships between the electronic structure, defect chemistry, and synthetic and post-synthetic tunability of metal oxide NCs. This article aims to provide an up-to-date picture of the optical tunability of metal oxide NC LSPR, in particular focusing on recent insights into how the NC electronic structure plays a role in LSPR tunability.

Abstract:Gold has always fascinated humans, occupying an important functional and symbolic role in civilization. In earlier times, gold was predominantly used in jewelry; today, this noble metal's surface properties are taken advantage of in catalysis and plasmonics. In this article, the plasmon resonance of gold dumbbell nanorods is investigated. This unusual morphology was obtained by a seed-mediated growth method. The concentration of chemical precursors such as cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and silver nitrate plays a significant role in controlling the shape of the nanorods. Indeed, the aspect ratio of dumbbell nanostructures was varied from 2.6 to 4. UV–visible absorption spectra revealed a shift of the longitudinal surface plasmon resonance peak from 669 to 789 nm. Having the plasmon resonance in the near infrared region helps to use those nanostructures as photothermal agents.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Hybrid metallic nanoparticles (NPs) encapsulated in oxide shells are currently intensely studied for plasmonic applications in sensing, medicine, catalysis, and photovoltaics. Here, a method for the synthesis of Au@Ag@SiO2 cubes with a uniform silica shell of variable and adjustable thickness in the nanometer range is introduced and their excellent, highly reproducible, and tunable optical response is demonstrated. Varying the silica shell thickness, the excitation energies of the single NP plasmon modes can be tuned in a broad spectral range between 2.55 and 3.25 eV. Most importantly, a strong coherent coupling of the surface plasmons is revealed at the silver–silica interface with Mie resonances at the silica–vacuum interface leading to a significant field enhancement at the encapsulated NP surface in the range of 100% at shell thicknesses t ≃ 20 nm. Consequently, the synthesis method and the field enhancement open pathways to a widespread use of silver NPs in plasmonic applications including photonic crystals and may be transferred to other non-precious metals.

Abstract:This paper mainly studies the plasma optical properties of the silver nanorod and gold film system with gap structure. During the experiment, the finite element analysis method and COMSOL Multiphysics are used for modeling and simulation. The study changes the thickness of the PE spacer layer between the silver nanorod and the gold film, the conditions of the incident light and the surrounding environment medium. Due to the anisotropic characteristics of silver nanorod, the microcavity system is extremely sensitive to the changes of internal and external conditions, and the system exhibits strong performance along the long axis of the nanorod. By analyzing the extinction spectrum of the nanoparticle and the electric field section diagrams at resonance peak, it is found that the plasma optical properties of the system greatly depend on the gap distance, and the surrounding electric field of the silver nanorod is confined in the gap. Both ends of the nanorod and the gap are distributed with high concentrations of hot spots, which reflects the strong hybridization of multiple resonance modes. Under certain excitation conditions, the plasma hybridization behavior will produce a multi-pole mode, and the surface electric field distribution of the nanorod reflects the spatial directionality. In addition, the system is also highly sensitive to the environmental media, which will cause significant changes in its optical properties. The plasma microcavity system with silver nanorod and gold film studied in this paper can be used to develop high-sensitivity biosensors, which has great value in the field of biomedical detection.

Abstract:Tunable surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and dipole cavity plasmon modes of the scattering cross section (SCS) spectra on the single solid-gold/gold-shell nanorod have been numerically investigated by using the finite element method. Various effects, such as the influence of SCS spectra under x- and y-polarizations on the surface of the single solid-gold/gold-shell nanorod, are discussed in detail. With the single gold-shell nanorod, one can independently tune the relative SCS spectrum width by controlling the rod length and rod diameter, and the surface scattering by varying the shell thickness and polarization direction, as well as the dipole peak energy. These behaviors are consistent with the properties of localized SPRs and offer a way to optically control and produce selected emission wavelengths from the single solid-gold/gold-shell nanorod. The electric field and magnetic distributions provide us a qualitative idea of the geometrical properties of the single solid-gold/gold-shell nanorod on plasmon resonance.

Abstract:Hollow nanostructures are currently a typical topological structure in plasmonic optics and exhibit excellent surface plasmon resonance control capabilities. This article presents a composite structure model of a hollow cylindrical gold nanoparticle and a gold film. The absorption spectrum is calculated using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. Results indicate that this hollow nano-composite structure exhibits excellent plasmonic resonance and electromagnetic field enhancement effects. The impact of cavity structural parameters on the plasmonic optics of the composite structure is explored, highlighting the influence of inner and outer cavity diameters on the coupling of surface plasmon fields. By introducing symmetry breaking to achieve ultra-sensitive control over the optical properties of the structure, variations in cavity parameters result in more complex coupling effects. The asymmetric hollow nanostructure enhances plasmonic field intensity, allowing precise modulation of resonance peaks and significantly increasing electric field enhancement. This research demonstrates the potential for systematically adjusting cavity parameters and symmetry to achieve precise modulation of plasmonic resonance modes in optical device design and optimization.

Abstract:Because of the geometric features of both rod and shell, dielectric-silver core–shell ellipsoidal nanostructure with 12–40 nm semi-major axis may bring forth four surface plasmon resonance (SPR) absorption peaks at most. Theoretical calculations based on quasi-static approximation show that there is surrounding refractive index-dependent plasmon blending and splitting in the absorption spectra, which makes the number of plasmon band of the silver ellipsoidal nanoshell is tunable. The sensitivity of the plasmon blending and splitting to the surrounding refractive index may be improved by increasing the shell thickness, aspect ratio or core refractive index. This local refractive index dependent-plasmon blending and splitting presents a new sensing picture based on tuning the number of SPR absorption peaks.
Coupling Resonances of Surface Plasmon in Gold Nanorod/Copper Chalcogenide Core-Shell Nanostructures and Their Enhanced Photothermal Effect

Abstract:Dual plasmonic Au@Cu2-xS core-shell nanorods (NRs) have been fabricated by using a hydrothermal method and plasmon-coupled effect between the Au core and Cu2-xS shell in the near-infrared (NIR) region. The extinction spectrum of Au@Cu2-xS NRs is dominated by the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of the Cu2-xS shell, the transverse surface plasmon resonance (TSPR), and the longitudinal surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of the Au NRs. With the Cu2-xS shell increasing (fixed Au NRs), the TSPR peak slightly redshifts and the LSPR and SPR peaks blueshift, owing to competition between the redshift of the refractive index effect and blueshift from the plasmon coupled effect. Although, for Au@Cu2S NRs, only TSPR and LSPR peaks can be seen and a redshift arises with the increasing Cu2S shell thickness, implying that no plasmonic coupling between Au NRs and Cu2S shell occurred. The extinction spectrum of the Au@Cu2-xS NRs with three coupled resonance peaks is simulated by using the FDTD method, taking into account the electron-transfer effect. The dispersion properties of the coupling of Au@Cu2-xS NRs with the LSPR of the initial Au core are studied experimentally by changing the length of the Au NRs, which are explained theoretically by the coupled harmonic oscillator model. The calculated coupled coefficients between SPR of the Cu2-xS shell and LSPR of the Au NRs is 180 meV, which is much stronger than that of TSPR of Au NRs of 55 meV. Finally, the enhanced photothermal effect of Au@Cu2-xS NRs has been demonstrated.
Plasmonic engineering of metal nanoparticles for enhanced fluorescence and Raman scattering

Abstract:We have investigated the effects of tuning the localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) of silver nanoparticles on the fluorescence intensity, lifetime, and Raman signal from nearby fluorophores. The presence of a metallic structure can alter the optical properties of a molecule by increasing the excitation field, and by modifying radiative and non-radiative decay mechanisms. By careful choice of experimental parameters we have been able to decouple these effects. We observe a four-fold increase in fluorescence enhancement and an almost 30-fold increase in decay rate from arrays of Ag nanoparticles, when the LSPR is tuned to the emission wavelength of a locally situated fluorophore. This is consistent with a greatly increased efficiency for energy transfer from fluorescence to surface plasmons. Additionally, surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) measurements show a maximum enhancement occurs when both the incident laser light and the Raman signal are near resonance with the plasmon energy. Spatial mapping of the SERS signal from a nanoparticle array reveals highly localized differences in the excitation field resulting from small differences in the LSPR energy.

Abstract:Because of the interaction between dipole resonances of the inner gold sphere and the outer gold shell, gold-dielectric-gold multishells with sub-50 nm diameter may at most have three hybridization modes of surface plasmon resonance (SPR). Theoretical calculations based on quasi-static theory indicate that there are blending and splitting of SPR bands in the absorption spectra, which makes the number of absorption peak tunable by changing the radius of inserted gold sphere, thickness of gold shell, dielectric constant of middle dielectric shell or outer environment. The two absorption peaks at longer wavelength, which correspond to the hybridization from the bonding shell plasmon and the sphere plasmon, are usually intense and well tunable. The absorption peak at shorter wavelength, which corresponds to the symmetric coupling between the anti-bonding shell plasmon and the sphere plasmon, is relative weak and only occurs with large dielectric constant of the middle shell, small dielectric constant of the outer surrounding, large inner radius of the gold shell, and small radius of the inner gold sphere. Furthermore, the physical origin of these plasmon hybridizations in gold-dielectric-gold multishells nanostructure has also been illuminated by analyzing the local electric field distributions.
Plasmonic mode interferences and Fano resonances in Metal-Insulator- Metal nanostructured interface

Abstract:Abstract Metal-insulator-metal systems exhibit a rich underlying physics leading to a high degree of tunability of their spectral properties. We performed a systematic study on a metal-insulator-nanostructured metal system with a thin 6 nm dielectric spacer and showed how the nanoparticle sizes and excitation conditions lead to the tunability and coupling/decoupling of localized and delocalized plasmonic modes. We also experimentally evidenced a tunable Fano resonance in a broad spectral window 600 to 800 nm resulting from the interference of gap modes with white light broad band transmitted waves at the interface playing the role of the continuum. By varying the incident illumination angle shifts in the resonances give the possibility to couple or decouple the localized and delocalized modes and to induce a strong change of the asymmetric Fano profile. All these results were confirmed with a crossed comparison between experimental and theoretical measurements, confirming the nature of different modes. The high degree of control and tunability of this plasmonically rich system paves the way for designing and engineering of similar systems with numerous applications. In particular, sensing measurements were performed and a figure of merit of 3.8 was recorded ranking this sensor among the highest sensitive in this wavelength range.

The core radius and shell thickness were considered in the range of 2–20 nm and 1–5 nm, respectively. In the case of varied core radius, shell thickness was kept fixed, and in the case of varied shell thickness, the core radius was kept fixed. The optical extinction spectra exhibited by these NPs have two surface plasmon resonance (SPR) absorption bands in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum, one corresponding to the core metal and the other corresponding to shell metal, respectively. The appearance of two absorption peaks is due to the fact that in the core-shell configuration there exists two SPR modes one at the interface between the core and shell, and other at the outer surface of the shell and embedding medium. These two SPR modes interact together and determine the shape of the extinction spectra. The position of the SPR band is found to shift as the radius or the thickness of the shell is increased. The shift of the SPR peak with high range of tunability has been observed in all the cases. Such tunability is beneficial to applications in surface-enhanced Raman scattering, fluorescence, optical sensing, bio-medicine, optoelectronic devices, and others.
