Abstract:Autonomous micro/nanorobots capable of performing programmed missions are at the forefront of next-generation micromachinery. These small robotic systems are predominantly constructed using functional components sourced from micro- and nanoscale materials; therefore, combining them with various advanced materials represents a pivotal direction toward achieving a higher level of intelligence and multifunctionality. This review provides a comprehensive overview of advanced materials for innovative micro/nanorobotics, focusing on the five families of materials that have witnessed the most rapid advancements over the last decade: two-dimensional materials, metal-organic frameworks, semiconductors, polymers, and biological cells. Their unique physicochemical, mechanical, optical, and biological properties have been integrated into micro/nanorobots to achieve greater maneuverability, programmability, intelligence, and multifunctionality in collective behaviors. The design and fabrication methods for hybrid robotic systems are discussed based on the material categories. In addition, their promising potential for powering motion and/or (multi-)functionality is described and the fundamental principles underlying them are explained. Finally, their extensive use in a variety of applications, including environmental remediation, (bio)sensing, therapeutics, etc., and remaining challenges and perspectives for future research are discussed.

Abstract:Soft robot is a novel category of robotics. Possessing the characteristics of high flexibility, high environmental adaptability, high compatibility and multi-functionality, soft robots are quite promising in research and practical appli-cations. The performances of soft robots are largely enhanced by the unique properties of smart materials, which play a crucial role in the design and application of soft robots. This paper summarizes existing soft robots by their actuat-ing mechanisms and functions into typical categories as worm-like peristaltic moving, caterpillar-like bending actuation, fish-swimming soft robotics. Furthermore, by their actuating mechanisms, soft robots are summarized as air pressure powered, shape memory alloy (SMA), ionic polymer metal composite (IPMC), dielectric elastomer (DE), responsive hydrogel, chemical combustion powered robotics. This paper reviews and discusses the fabricating method, the current challenges and future prospects of soft robots.

Abstract:Future robots will effectively interact with the environments, tasks and other agents, either people or robots. Robots with coexisting designs can safely operate with human and environments. Cooperation enables robots to collaborate with other agents. Cognition enables the robots to perceive and predict the behaviour. The concept of Tri-Co (Coexisting-Cooperative-Cognitive) benefits future studies and applications of robots. Professor Guang-Zhong Yang (FREng, FIEEE, FIET, FAIMBE) is Dean of the Institute of Medical Robotics, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU); he was also the co-founder and director of the Hamlyn Centre for Robotic Surgery, Imperial College London, as well as the founding editor of Science Robotics. Currently he is appointed full-time as chair professor of SJTU. Professor Yang's main research interests are in medical imaging, sensing and robotics. Prof. Yang discussed with NSR the interesting fields of Tri-Co Robots, as well as sharing ideas on his own research.

Abstract:Over the past 20 years, there has been considerable progress in the development of research in the micro-/nanorobotics area. Through major, rapid, investment in the field and the use of, for example, correlation techniques, many successes have been seen in both theoretical and experimental work, which have had applications in emerging areas such as clinical medicine. As a result, this article aims to introduce and review some of the most influential and advanced research work carried out over the past few years. To do so, the approach taken has been to categorize micro-/nanorobots by their propulsion modes, analyzing their advantages and drawbacks in detail, looking at medical applications such as such as the delivery of medical supplies, medical imaging and so on. Additionally, the article looks at future directions in micro-/nanorobot development, including important areas such as biocompatibility (as well as biodegradability), autonomy and accurate operation in the complex and dynamic environment of the human body. Abstract:Nanorobots with advanced capabilities that can accomplish various tasks have been the focus of significant research interests. Nanorobots can self-propel in different trajectories, be guided using external fields, and interact with objects and the environment. In recent years, various fabrication techniques, such as physical, chemical, microfluidic, and self-assembly methods, have been employed to integrate specific functions. Microfluidic platforms are utilized to encapsulate individual reactions and reaction networks, providing an experimental testbed system for designing the next generation of nanorobots. Due to significant progress in the field, man-made nanobots have been applied for a wide variety of operations. Today, a convergence between biomedical nanoparticles and nanorobots is apparent. This review discusses the next generation of nanorobots, the range of their fabrication techniques, and introduces integrated functions for bio-applications.

Abstract:We posit that embodied artificial intelligence is not only a computational, but also a materials problem. While the importance of material and structural properties in the control loop are well understood, materials can take an active role during control by tight integration of sensors, actuators, computation and communication. We envision such materials to abstract functionality, therefore making the construction of intelligent robots more straightforward and robust. For example, robots could be made of bones that measure load, muscles that move, skin that provides the robot with information about the kind and location of tactile sensations ranging from pressure, to texture and damage, eyes that extract high-level information, and brain material that provides computation in a scalable manner. Such materials will not resemble any existing engineered materials, but rather the heterogeneous components out of which their natural counterparts are made. We describe the state-of-the-art in so-called "robotic materials", their opportunities for revolutionizing applications ranging from manipulation to autonomous driving, and open challenges the robotics community needs to address in collaboration with allies, such as wireless sensor network researchers and polymer scientists.

Abstract:Microscale robots have been the focus of extensive research efforts resulting in various innovative developments that broaden their capabilities and applications. The rational design of materials has been the cornerstone for developing and innovating microscale robots, and breakthroughs in materials science are expected to further push the boundaries of this field. This Review provides an overview of the design principles and material selection for the propulsion and operation of microrobots. The fundamental mechanisms governing the motion of microrobots are first introduced, followed by the material design strategies enabling efficient and controllable propulsion. We highlight the use of diverse reactive and responsive materials in realizing the advanced functionalities and capabilities of microrobots, cover representative biomedical and environmental applications and discuss how future material innovations will impact the development of next-generation microscale robots.

Abstract:Sustainable robotics is an emerging field of research that aims to develop robotic automation solutions to address the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. The material-centric approach to sustainable robotics focuses on designing robots with novel sustainable materials starting from natural or recycled raw materials, demonstrating self-healing reusability, and eventually recycled, upcycled, or biodegraded with minimal environmental impact. The ultimate goal is to realize a physical robotic embodiment with a circular life-cycle. This perspective highlights recent advances in material science, ranging from self-healing materials to biodegradable and recyclable materials, which serve as the foundation for this emerging class of robots. We then showcase examples of functional material integration in sustainable robotic components and discuss challenges and opportunities towards an entirely sustainable robotic system.

Abstract:Emerging classes of soft robotics with flexible actuation, intelligent sensibility, and biomimetic functionality are driving significant advances in academic researches and commercial applications. Such new generation robotics relies heavily on important breakthroughs in soft matter engineering and flexible actuation systems. Unlike conventional rigid robots, soft robots generally have unique sporting styles and manufacturing strategies. Recently, a series of newly developed soft materials—gallium‐based liquid metals (LMs) are found to display dramatical roles in making soft machines and robotics with their unusual properties in soft robotic actuation and self‐driven field. With superior merits of both high stretchability and electroconductivity over conventional soft materials, LM is increasingly innovated as flexible sensors and actuators in constructing intelligent soft robots. Typical advances in LM enabled soft machines and robotics are summarized and interpreted, herein, with special focus on the driving principles of the LM objects, the preparation methods of LM flexible electronics for making soft robots, and the applications of LM in biomedicines and intelligent robots, together with the consideration of key challenges facing LM‐based soft robotics and its future prospects.

Abstract:Soft robotic systems are human friendly and can mimic the complex motions of animals, which introduces promising potential in various applications, ranging from novel actuation and wearable electronics to bioinspired robots operating in unstructured environments. Due to the use of soft materials, the traditional fabrication and manufacturing methods for rigid materials are unavailable for soft robots. 3D printing is a promising fabrication method for the multifunctional and multimaterial demands of soft robots, as it enables the personalization and customization of the materials and structures. This review provides perspectives on the manufacturing methods for various types of soft robotic systems and discusses the challenges and prospects of future research, including in-depth discussion of pneumatic, electrically activated, magnetically driven, and 4D-printed soft actuators and integrated soft actuators and sensors. Finally, the challenges of realizing multimaterial, multiscale, and multifunctional 3D-printed soft robots are discussed. Abstract:Unlike conventional rigid machines, soft robots generally have unique operation styles that rely heavily on soft matter engineering and smart material systems. Owing to the superior merits of both metals and fluids, liquid metal smart materials are increasingly being innovatively used as soft actuators and sensors to construct soft robots. To promote further development and prosperity in this field, this review organizes and summarizes the typical progress in liquid metal smart materials, with a special focus on their robotic response behaviors. In particular, the article emphasizes the concept of smart composite systems consisting of liquid metals and synergistic substances (e.g., solutions, particles, and polymers). The response behaviors of liquid metal smart materials under the actions of external factors (electricity, magnetism, ultrasound, light, heat, etc.) are examined and the smart properties occurring during these responses, such as motion, transformation, self‐organization, adaptive healing, and autonomous sensing, are identified. Furthermore, soft actuators, control systems, and robots based on liquid metal smart materials are summarized and elaborated upon. Finally, the potential directions worth pursuing and challenges are outlined. It is expected that this review will stimulate further investigations into liquid metal smart materials with the aim of building a new generation of soft robots.

Abstract:Animals exploit the deformability of soft structures to move efficiently in complex natural environments. These soft structures are inherently compliant and enable large strains in components not typically found in robotics. Such capabilities have inspired robotic engineers to incorporate soft technologies into their designs. One goal in soft robotics is to endow robots with new, bioinspired features that permit morphologically adaptive interactions with unpredictable environments. Here, we review three key elements of bioinspired soft robots from a mechanics vantage point, namely, materials selection, actuation, and design. Soft materials are necessary for safe interaction and overall actuation of bio-inspired robots. The intrinsic properties of materials in soft robots allow for an “embodied intelligence” that can potentially reduce the mechanical and algorithmic complexity in ways not possible with rigid-bodied robots Finally, soft robotics can be combined with tissue engineering and synthetic biology to create bio-hybrid systems with unique sensing, dynamic response, and mobility. Bioinspired soft robots have the ability to also expedite the evolution of co-robots that can safely interact with humans.

Abstract:While conventional mechanics of materials offers a passive understanding of the mechanical properties of materials in existing forms, a paradigm shift, referred to as mechanomaterials, is emerging to enable the proactive programming of materials' properties and functionalities by leveraging force-geometry-property relationships. One of the foundations of this new paradigm is nanomechanics, which permits functional and structural materials to be designed based on principles from the nanoscale and beyond. Although the field of mechanomaterials is still in its infancy at the present time, we discuss the current progress in three specific directions closely linked to nanomechanics and provide perspectives on these research foci by considering the potential research directions, chances for success, and existing research capabilities. We believe this new research paradigm will provide future materials solutions for infrastructure, healthcare, energy, and environment.

Abstract:<p>Soft robotics is a growing field of research, focusing on constructing motor‐less robots from highly compliant materials, some are similar to those found in living organisms. Soft robotics has a high potential for applications in various fields such as soft grippers, actuators, and biomedical devices. 3D printing of soft robotics presents a novel and promising approach to form objects with complex structures, directly from a digital design. Here, recent developments in the field of materials for 3D printing of soft robotics are summarized, including high‐performance flexible and stretchable materials, hydrogels, self‐healing materials, and shape memory polymers, as well as fabrication of all‐printed robots (multi‐material printing, embedded electronics, untethered and autonomous robotics). The current challenges in the fabrication of 3D printed soft robotics, including the materials available and printing abilities, are presented and the recent activities addressing these challenges are also surveyed.</p>

Abstract:Bio‐Inspired robotics and actuators make great achievements thanks to the source of inspiration of nature. This paper classifies the sources of inspiration and summarizes the properties of bionic materials. The matching method of bio‐inspiration to mechanical properties is proposed. The authors are looking forward to the bio‐application prospects in the future. Bionic robotics and actuators have made dramatic advancements in structural design, material preparation, and application owing to the richness of nature and innovative material design. Appropriate and ingenious sources of bio‐inspiration can stimulate a large number of different bionic systems. After millennia of survival and evolutionary exploration, the mere existence of life confirms that nature is constantly moving in an evolutionary direction of optimization and improvement. To this end, bio‐inspired robots and actuators can be constructed for the completion of a variety of artificial design instructions and requirements. In this article, the advances in bio‐inspired materials for robotics and actuators with the sources of bio‐inspiration are reviewed. The specific sources of inspiration in bionic systems and corresponding bio‐inspired applications are summarized first. Then the basic functions of materials in bio‐inspired robots and actuators is discussed. Moreover, a principle of matching biomaterials is creatively suggested. Furthermore, the implementation of biological information extraction is discussed, and the preparation methods of bionic materials are reclassified. Finally, the challenges and potential opportunities involved in finding sources of bio‐inspiration and materials for robotics and actuators in the future is discussed.

Abstract:Additive manufacturing (AM) has drawn tremendous attention in various fields. In recent years, great efforts have been made to develop novel additive manufacturing processes such as micro-/nano-scale 3D printing, bioprinting, and 4D printing for the fabrication of complex 3D structures with high resolution, living components, and multimaterials. The development of advanced functional materials is important for the implementation of these novel additive manufacturing processes. Here, a state-of-the-art review on advanced material strategies for novel additive manufacturing processes is provided, mainly including conductive materials, biomaterials, and smart materials. The advantages, limitations, and future perspectives of these materials for additive manufacturing are discussed. It is believed that the innovations of material strategies in parallel with the evolution of additive manufacturing processes will provide numerous possibilities for the fabrication of complex smart constructs with multiple functions, which will significantly widen the application fields of next-generation additive manufacturing.

Abstract:Robots with submillimeter dimensions are of interest for applications that range from tools for minimally invasive surgical procedures in clinical medicine to vehicles for manipulating cells/tissues in biology research. The limited classes of structures and materials that can be used in such robots, however, create challenges in achieving desired performance parameters and modes of operation. Here, we introduce approaches in manufacturing and actuation that address these constraints to enable untethered, terrestrial robots with complex, three-dimensional (3D) geometries and heterogeneous material construction. The manufacturing procedure exploits controlled mechanical buckling to create 3D multimaterial structures in layouts that range from arrays of filaments and origami constructs to biomimetic configurations and others. A balance of forces associated with a one-way shape memory alloy and the elastic resilience of an encapsulating shell provides the basis for reversible deformations of these structures. Modes of locomotion and manipulation span from bending, twisting, and expansion upon global heating to linear/curvilinear crawling, walking, turning, and jumping upon laser-induced local thermal actuation. Photonic structures such as retroreflectors and colorimetric sensing materials support simple forms of wireless monitoring and localization. These collective advances in materials, manufacturing, actuation, and sensing add to a growing body of capabilities in this emerging field of technology.
