Abstract:LGBTQ+ inclusion in wildlife sciences requires understanding history and ongoing systemic and social barriers. With the growth of recommendations, it's important to have perspective and consider broad‐scale need past individual actions. Through examining history, survival needs, and necessary context for wildlife research, this paper provides a launchpad for adaptive policy and targeted advocacy. Science has a history of excluding marginalized groups, including people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, and other marginalized gender and sexual identities (LGBTQ+), and recent calls urge the wildlife sciences to address disparities. Literature on inclusion in the life sciences generally has focused on personal affirmation and has neglected comprehensive discussion of barriers rooted in historical, structural, and sociocultural context. In our literature review, we construct a narrative highlighting the intersections between historic LGBTQ+ exclusion in society and wildlife science due to current policy trends, pressures of cis‐heteronormativity, and survival barriers on LGBTQ+ people in wildlife sciences in the United States. Wildlife scientists must have competency on LGBTQ+ marginalization topics to advance inclusion in our discipline, and this should include comprehension of historic and current legislation and social perceptions. To bolster inclusion efforts, we recommend thoughtful data collection on experiences of LGBTQ+ people within the wildlife sciences. To address root causes of exclusion, institutions and organizations should address disparities in financial support, housing, and physical and mental health resources as part of LGBTQ+ advocacy, in addition to interpersonal efforts.

Abstract:Sixty-seven countries still criminalize the 2SLGBTQIA+ (two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, plus) community. Some governments are actively pursuing and celebrating anti-2SLGBTQIA+ legislation, and even in places where human-rights legislation protects 2SLGBTQIA+ people, hate crimes are on the rise. The issues facing justice and belonging impact every facet of life for those in the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Although science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields have made advances that better society, they are not immune to the impacts of discrimination. Challenges persist for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community in STEM, starting from the beginning of one's career. For example, STEM students identifying as a sexual minority were 7% less likely to be retained in four-year degree programmes compared with their heterosexual counterparts 1 . For those that pursue a career in STEM, it has also been shown that 2SLGBTQIA+ people were 20.2% more likely to report professional devaluation and consider leaving STEM fields altogether 2 .

Abstract:This inaugural article considers two types of challenges – scientific and cultural – facing researchers who study gender, sexualities, and relationships. For the scientific challenges, I focus on the tension between constructing parsimonious theories while simultaneously accounting for the complexity of gender, sexuality, and relationships. I focus on ambivalent sexism theory as an example that illustrates both the advantages and disadvantages of parsimonious theories before turning to a topic for which achieving parsimony has been elusive: gender identity. Finally, I address the current, highly politicized cultural environment, addressing attempts to suppress gender and sexual diversity, as well as to silence teaching and research on these topics.

Abstract:Modern society is diverse, multicultural, and multifaceted. Because of these characteristics, we are currently observing an increase in the debates about equity, diversity, and inclusion in different areas, especially because several groups of individuals are underrepresented in many environments. In computer science and software engineering, it seems counter-intuitive that these areas, which are responsible for creating technological solutions and systems for billions of users around the world, do not reflect the diversity of the society to which it serves. In trying to solve this diversity crisis in the software industry, researchers started to investigate strategies that can be applied to increase diversity and improve inclusion in academia and the software industry. However, the lack of diversity in computer science and related courses, including software engineering, is still a problem, in particular when some specific groups are considered. LGBTQIA+ students, for instance, face several challenges to fit into technology courses, even though most students in universities right now belong to Generation Z, which is described as open-minded to aspects of gender and sexuality. In this study, we aimed to discuss the state-of-art of publications about the inclusion of LGBTQIA+ students in computer science education. Using a mapping study, we identified eight studies published in the past six years that focused on this public. We present strategies developed to adapt curricula and lectures to be more inclusive to LGBTQIA+ students and discuss challenges and opportunities for future research

Abstract:Disparities for women and minorities in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers have continued even amidst mounting evidence for the superior performance of diverse workforces. In response, we launched the Diversity and Science Lecture series, a cross-institutional platform where junior life scientists present their research and comment on diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM. We characterize speaker representation from 79 profiles and investigate topic noteworthiness via quantitative content analysis of talk transcripts. Nearly every speaker discussed interpersonal support, and three-fifths of speakers commented on race or ethnicity. Other topics, such as sexual and gender minority identity, were less frequently addressed but highly salient to the speakers who mentioned them. We found that significantly co-occurring topics reflected not only conceptual similarity, such as terms for racial identities, but also intersectional significance, such as identifying as a Latina/Hispanic woman or Asian immigrant, and interactions between concerns and identities, including the heightened value of friendship to the LGBTQ community, which we reproduce using transcripts from an independent seminar series. Our approach to scholar profiles and talk transcripts serves as an example for transmuting hundreds of hours of scholarly discourse into rich datasets that can power computational audits of speaker diversity and illuminate speakers' personal and professional priorities.

Abstract:There are widespread calls for increased demographic diversity in science, often linked to the epistemic claim that including more perspectives will improve the quality of the knowledge produced. By distinguishing between demographic and epistemic diversity, we show that this is only true some of the time. There are cases where increasing demographic diversity will not bring about the necessary epistemic diversity and cases where failing to exclude some voices reduces the quality of the scientific debate. We seek to resolve these tensions with an analysis that turns on the way the experience-based expertise of non-scientists can be absorbed into mainstream science. Mostly it has to be done via what we call 'virtual diversity', in which scientists take responsibility for acquiring interactional expertise in the non-scientific expertise-based domains which they consider provide knowledge valuable to the science. We argue that virtual diversity represents the only feasible option in most scenarios, with cases where demographic diversity or full cultural mergers provide the solution being the exception rather than the rule. This analysis is an exercise in the sociology of knowledge, which is considered as being continuous with philosophy. The paper is prescriptive as well as descriptive, and the moral, cultural, political, and educational implications of the argument are drawn out. A main conclusion is that the acquisition of virtual diversity should be a new norm for science, allowing the voices of experienced non-scientist citizens to be heard but without eroding the institution of science, which continues to be a vital foundation of truth in democracy.

Abstract:Psychology and other disciplines have exceptionally documented sexual orientation and gender identity disparities in mental and physical health outcomes with psychological antecedents. Research on sexual and gender minority (SGM) health has seen impressive growth, including the launch of dedicated conferences, journals, and designation as a disparity population for U.S. federal research purposes. From 2015 to 2020, the number of SGM-focused research projects funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) increased by 66.1% (cf. 21.8% for all NIH projects). SGM health research has expanded beyond HIV (73.0% of NIH's SGM projects in 2015 down to 59.8% in 2020) into other domains, such as mental health (41.6%), substance use disorders (23%), violence (7.2%), and transgender (21.9%) and bisexual (17.2%) health. Yet, only 8.9% of projects were clinical trials testing interventions. The need for more research on later stages in the translational research spectrum (i.e., mechanisms, intervention, implementation) to eradicate SGM health disparities is the focus of our Viewpoint article. First, research to eliminate SGM health disparities must move toward multilevel interventions aimed at cultivating health, wellbeing, and thriving. Second, research to test how psychological theories apply to SGM people can inform new theories or extend existing ones, which can spur new areas of inquiry. Third, translational SGM health research would benefit from a developmental lens to identify protective and promotive factors across the life span. Finally, using mechanistic findings to inform, develop, disseminate, and implement interventions to reduce SGM health disparities is crucial at this time. Abstract:Many of the major scientific challenges of the 21st century are likely to require collaborative and interdisciplinary teams. Creating good “team players” who can work synergistically to undertake high‐risk, high‐reward research should be a priority, and demonstrating success in collaborations should be encouraged by private and federal granting agencies, and more highly rewarded by universities in tenure and promotion decisions. Given the challenges that our nation faces, tenure and promotion decisions should no longer be based merely on the number of papers published or overhead dollars generated. Journal editorial boards and foundation peer‐review panels are essential to the highest‐quality science, but they should not be viewed as surrogate members of tenure and promotion committees. Rewarding careers paths should be clearly visible to the nation's newly minted science Ph.D.s, postdoctoral researchers and “tenure track” professors. Allowing these early‐career scientists more expansive opportunities during their most creative years would make the United States, and the academic communities in which they serve, an increasingly more vibrant and creative environments. The heart and soul of American science and enterprise is the willingness to take risks, to learn from failure and to repeat the process until success is achieved. Our early‐career scientists should have the same opportunity.

Abstract:People identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual, or other gender identities or sexual orientations (LGBTQIA+) often face workplace bias or discrimination. Unique dynamics in academic neuroscience, psychology, and psychiatry departments warrant specific investigation. Trainee, staff, and faculty participants ( N = 534) completed an online survey assessing identity and workplace experiences. Many respondents were not out about their identity at work (46%) despite most being out personally (81%). A positive workplace climate is critical to outness, career satisfaction, and mental health. Experiences of exclusionary behaviour (24%) and depression (37%) were common. Qualitative responses called for explicit LGBTQIA+ inclusion in diversity and classroom curricula, structural and financial support for LGBTQIA+ people, and greater support for individuals of colour and/or identifying as trans. Respondents expressed a pervasive sentiment that academic institutions should avoid putting undue, unpaid burden of diversity work on minoritized individuals and should aim to promote meaningful structural change rather than creating the appearance of inclusivity.
