Abstract:A novel, eco-friendly nanohybrid solid lubricant additive was synthesized using oleic acid, a readily available green material. By esterifying the 18-carbon chain of ethyl oleate (EO) and subjecting it to hydrosilylation with triethoxysilane (TES), the ethyl 9-(triethoxysilyl)octadecanoate (S2EO) was created. Nanosized Polymethyl silsesquioxanes (PMSQ) particles (P-NPs) were then modified with S2EO to produce the lubricant additive P-NPs-S2EO for enhancing silicone oil’s tribological performance. The synthesis processes were verified by FTIR, H-NMR, SEM, and EDS, while TGA demonstrated the nanohybrid’s superior thermal stability, showing only 1.8% weight loss at 200 °C. Tribological tests using a pin-on-disk tribometer with P-NPs and P-NPs-S2EO in silicone oil revealed a friction reduction of up to 93%, outperforming traditionally used borax and other silicone-based lubricants. The sustainable synthesis of P-NPs-S2EO, confirmed by Density Function Theory (DFT) calculations, underscores its thermal stability and efficiency as a lubricant additive.

Abstract:Liquid phase exfoliated graphene sheets were modified by oleic acid and dispersed in lubricant oils as additives. The tribological behaviours of graphene-contained oils were investigated using a four-ball tribometer. The lubricant with optimized graphene concentrations of 0.02–0.06 wt% showed enhanced friction and anti-wear performance, with friction coefficient and wear scar diameter reduced by 17% and 14%, respectively.

Abstract:Abstract Graphene has excellent mechanical properties with a low coefficient of friction and wear resistance and has a wide range of tribological applications. However, the stable dispersion of graphene in lubricating media is challenging. In this study, graphene is processed via covalent modification. A mild oxidation method selectively grafts carboxyl groups on the edge of the graphene sheet, before connecting tertiary alkyl primary amines through amide bonds. The alkyl chain allows graphene to be stably dispersed in hydrocarbon solvents.. FT-IR, XPS, Raman, XRD, SEM, etc. are used to characterize the covalently modified graphene (MG). Dispersion stability experiments showed that MG exhibited stable dispersion in 500N base oil and 15w-40 commercial lubricants, with stability for over 2 months. Tribological test results show that MG in 500N and 15w-40 significantly reduces the friction and wear of steel-steel friction pairs. The stable dispersion of MG in lubricating oil enables the formation of a stable chemical reaction film and graphene physical deposition film during the friction, protects the worn surface, and reduces direct contact, thereby significantly reducing friction and wear.

Abstract:The prime objective of this study was to extend the application of graphene additive in oil solution via investigating the frictional interaction of graphene and ZDDP composite additives in point contact lubrication. Accordingly, 0.05 wt% graphene, 1 wt% ZDDP and their mixtures as additives were added into PAO4 base oil. The ball-on-disk reciprocating experiments were carried out under the load of 30 N, 80 N, 155 N and 310 N. The tribological performance of the single system containing graphene and ZDDP were evaluated separately to compare the tribological property of the composite system containing graphene + ZDDP. The result revealed that the friction coefficient of the graphene/ZDDP composite system was slightly higher compared to PAO4 oil under high load. Whereas the composite system exhibited excellent wear resistance under all loads, reducing the wear rate by 77% in comparison to that of PAO4 oil under a load of 30 N. The reduction in wear is attributed to the formation of the graphene tribofilm and the protective polyphosphate film, which avoided the direct contact with the sliding surface and effectively inhibited the wear of steel materials.

Abstract:The graphite nanoparticles prepared in water were introduced to lubricating oil by phase transfer. Tribological experiments were performed to determined anti-wear capability, load capacity and friction coefficient of the modified lubricant. The graphite addition reduced the diameter of friction scar from 0.52 to 0.46 mm and the friction coefficient from 0.086 7 to 0.061 2 while having no effect on the load capacity. The graphite layers formed by the nanoparticles prevented the immediate contact between the two sliding sides. The test results demonstrated improved tribological properties of the graphite nanoparticles modified lubricant.
High dispersivity and excellent tribological performance of titanate coupling agent modified graphene oxide in hydraulic oil

Abstract:<p>Achieving good dispersion stability of graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets in lubricants remains a challenge due to its inherent nature. Here, the isopropyl triisostearyl titanate modified graphene oxide (T-GO) was prepared for improving its dispersion stability in hydraulic oil via a simple method, and for further enhancing the tribological behaviors. The chemical and structural features of T-GO illustrate that the titanate coupling agent (T) was successfully grafted on the plane or interlayer of GO via the interaction between T and hydroxy. The high dispersibility of T-GO in hydraulic oil was demonstrated by the sedimentation experiment and UV–vis absorption spectra (good stability and no sedimentation after 30 days). The 0.08 wt% T-GO hybrid hydraulic oil displayed excellent extreme pressure performance (load carrying capacity raises at least 400 N), friction reduction (friction cofficient reduces by nearly 50%) and wear resistance (wear volume decreases by about 20%). The surface/interface analysis on the worn surfaces testified the formation of graphene-based tribo-film on the contact interfaces. Hence, the excellent lubrication function of T-GO hybrid hydraulic oil was attributed to not only high dispersion stability of T-GO, but also the formation of graphene-like tribo-film, thereby reducing the friction and protecting the tribo-interfaces against wear.</p>

Abstract:Abstract Graphene is a promising material as a lubricant additive for reducing friction and wear. Here, a dispersing method which combines chemical modification of graphene by octadecylamine and dicyclohexylcarbodiimide with a kind of effective dispersant has been successfully developed to achieve the remarkable dispersion stability of graphene in base oil. The stable dispersion time of modified graphene (0.5 wt%) with dispersant (1 wt%) in PAO-6 could be up to about 120 days, which was the longest time reported so far. At the same time, the lubricant exhibits a significant improvement of tribological performance for a steel ball to plate tribo-system with a normal load of 2 N. The coefficient of friction between sliding surfaces was ~0.10 and the depth of wear track on plate was ~21 nm, which decreased by about 44% and 90% when compared to pure PAO-6, respectively. Furthermore, the analysis of the lubricating mechanisms in regard to the sliding-induced formation of nanostructured tribo-film has been contacted by using Raman spectra and TEM.

Abstract:Increasing studies have demonstrated excellent tribological properties of graphene as lubricant additive. Thus, extended explanations of the relationship between microstructure and tribological properties are needed. This paper reported the effects of thickness and particle size of graphene on its frictional performance, using a ball-on-plate tribotester under reciprocating condition. Graphene with few-layer (G2) or multi-layer (G10) structure was added to PAO4 as lubricant additive. The particle of G10 was further separated through centrifugation into two types, large size G10 (G10L) and small size G10 (G10S). G10S exhibits excellent reduction in friction (37%) and wear (47%) relative to the neat base oil, indicating the superior tribological properties of graphene with more layers and smaller particle size. Wear scar analysis shows that the surface lubricated with G10 is flatter and glossier than that of G2. It can be hypothesized that the interlaminar shear slip is more likely to occur in multi-layer graphene, leading to better friction reduction and wear resistance performance. Graphene with smaller particle size is not only less prone to structural defects and wrinkles, but also more easily adsorbed onto the sliding surface to form a lubricating film, providing enhanced wear and frictional performance. The present work suggests that the thickness and size may have direct influence on the tribological properties of graphene, providing theoretical and experimental guidance for the application of graphene as lubricant additive.

Abstract:The lubrication performance of graphene is reduced at high frequencies and speeds owing to the agglomeration and poor interfacial adsorption of graphene. In this study, we used a mild oxidation method to prepare graphene oxide, onto which polar nitrogen-containing groups were grafted to prepare covalently modified graphene. The modified graphene retained a graphene structure and exhibited excellent dispersion stability and interfacial adsorption properties. It was stably dispersed in 500 N base oil for more than 60 days. Tribological tests with a steel ball–steel plate friction system (rate: 75 mm/s; reciprocating frequency: 25 Hz) showed that the friction coefficient of the sliding surface was ~ 0.063 when using 500 N base oil with the modified graphene as a lubricating additive, which was approximately 47.1% lower than that when using pure 500 N base oil.Graphical abstractSchematic of antifriction mechanism of MG as 500N base oil additive.

Abstract:As lubricant additive, graphene and/or graphene oxide (GO) has received considerable interest due to its excellent tribological performance. Here, grafting octadecylamine(ODA) onto GO via facile amidation was carried out and hydrazine monohydrate was used as reducing agent to attain ODA-RGO as lubricant additive. The physical, chemical properties and morphologies of ODA-RGO and GO were characterized.Tribological properties were evaluated using a ball-on-plate configuration on a UMT-3 tribometer and then worn surfaces were examined by Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Raman spectra and optical microscope. It was found that ODA-RGO was helpful for lubrication and friction-reduction under the applied load of 10 N. The excellent tribological behavior was contributed to the formation of ODA-RGO protective film which could avoid direct contact between tribological mates. The restacked shape of sheet-like ODA-RGO also plays an important role in friction process.
One-Pot Synthesis of Alkyl Functionalized Reduced Graphene Oxide Nanocomposites as the Lubrication Additive Enabling Enhanced Tribological Performance

Abstract:Recently, aiming for the enhanced dispersibility of graphene-based nanomaterials in lubricating oil matrices to serve as highly efficient lubricant additives, numerous modification approaches have been extensively studied. However, these previous modification routes usually involve a tedious multistep modification process or multitudinous toxic reagents, restricting their extensive practical application. In this work, novel graphene oxide (GO) nanoadditives (RGO-g-BO) featuring excellent durable dispersion capability and remarkable tribological performance were successfully prepared via an environmentally friendly one-step approach consisting of surface grafting of long-chain bromooctadecane (BO) and in situ chemical reduction. Benefiting from the greatly improved lipophilicity (resulting from the introduction of hydrophobic long-chain alkane groups and chemical reduction), along with the miniaturization effect, RGO-g-BO exhibits superior long-term dispersion stability in the finished oil. Moreover, the tribological properties results demonstrated that the finished oil filled with RGO-g-BO nanolubricants achieved an outstanding friction-reducing and antiwear performance. Particularly, under the optimum content of RGO-g-BO (as low as 0.005 wt%), the friction coefficient as well as the wear volume of the composite finished oil were greatly reduced by 13% and 53%, respectively, as compared with nascent finished oil. Therefore, in view of the advantages of low-cost, one-step facile synthesis, desirable dispersion capability, and remarkable tribological performance, RGO-g-BO holds great prospects as a highly efficient lubrication additive in the tribology field.

Abstract:The functionalized graphene/montmorillonite (FG/MTT) nanosheet was synthesized through chemical bonding by a simple, green method, which had remarkable dispersion stability in oil and its lubricating performance was evaluated by a four-ball tribometer. The test results showed that FG/MTT had a preeminent lubricant property when the concentration was 0.4 mg/ml. Compared with the bare oil sample, its average friction coefficient (FC) and wear scar diameter (WSD) decreased by 50.4% and 13.2%, respectively. The synergistic effect between FG and MTT was further explored by comparing the lubricant mechanism of the different additives. After synthetically analyzing worn surface by means of scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the lubrication mechanism of the FG/MTT nanocomposite as oil additive was discussed and postulated: the FG/MTT with weak interlayer adhesion was filled between the friction pairs to avoid contact and clinging of some asperities, and the sliding between the layers played a role in lubrication. Furthermore, FG/MTT would react with the surface of the friction pair to form a repair layer composed of Fe2O3, SiC, SiO2, and aluminosilicate, mending the grinding surface and promoting the hardness after friction.

Abstract:The aim of the present study is to assess and compare the characteristics such as thermal stability, viscosity and frictional and wear properties of graphene nanoparticle (GNP)-enhanced lubricant against the polyalphaolefins-4 (PAO4) base oil. Four samples with different wt.% concentrations (0.075%, 0.1%, 0.15%, and 0.5%) of GNP-enhanced lubricant samples were synthesized. The thermal stability analysis demonstrated that GNP-enhanced lubricant assists to delay the oxidation onset temperature. The sample with 0.5 wt.% GNP addition showed 21.79 °C higher temperature for oxidation compared to pure base oil. The GNP-enhanced lubricant demonstrated an increment of 33% to 56% in viscosity for varying concentration (from 0.075 to 0.5 wt.%) as compared to pure base oil at 100 °C. The findings indicate that when utilized at an ideal concentration of 0.15 wt.% GNP additive lubricants demonstrate notable improvements in reducing friction coefficient and wear depth by 85% and 80%, respectively, compared to pure base oil.

Abstract:In recent years, graphene‐based nanomaterials have attracted extensive attention because of their excellent physical and chemical properties, such as high strength, high conductivity, high thermal conductivity and excellent lubrication performance. Here, the latest research progresses of graphene‐based nanomaterials are reviewed in this paper, and its synthesis method, unique structure, dispersion improvement strategy and wide application in tribology are emphatically discussed. Graphene‐based materials are synthesized by typical chemical vapor deposition and reduced graphene oxide, showing nanoporous structure characteristics and excellent layered structure. Furthermore, through adjusting the chemical structure for the material, the graphene‐based materials with specific lubricating properties can be designed to meet the use requirements under different working conditions. In view of the easy agglomeration of graphene, physical and chemical dispersion methods, such as in‐situ polymerization and functionalization treatment, were introduced, which significantly improved its dispersibility in the matrix. In tribology, graphene‐based nanocomposites present the excellent anti‐friction and anti‐wear properties, which effectively reduce the coefficient of friction and prolong the service life of materials with forming the stable lubricating films. The summary for graphene‐based materials provides theoretical basis and technical support for applications in high‐end manufacturing, energy storage, and protective coatings.

Abstract:<p>Graphene oxide (GO) underwent a single and double-side modification with octadecylamine (ODA) to MGO1 and MGO2 respectively. MGO1 and MGO2 were incorporated into the O/W base emulsion respectively to change the composition of the boundary layer and the oil phase. It was found that the tribological properties of MGO1-emulsion were better than that of MGO2-emulsion. Chemical composition analysis of the worn surfaces suggests that MGO1 nanosheets might adsorb more easily onto the surface and react better with the bearing steel to produce C-N-O-Fe-containing compounds than do MGO2 nanosheets, and that MGO1 nanosheets were more actively involved in the shear process that occurs in the contact area. SEM and nanoindentation indicated that there was a non-uniform softer MGO1-tribofilm on metal substrate.</p>

Abstract:The poor dispersion stability and inferior anti-damage performance of single component graphene limit its industrial application as lubricating oil additives. Herein, titanium dioxide/reduced graphene oxide (TiO2/rGO) nanocomposites were prepared by a hydrothermal method as an oil-based lubricant additive. Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectra verified the generation of interfacial interaction between TiO2 (size of 4–9 nm) and rGO. Among them, the 0.08 wt% TiO2/rGO nanocomposites exhibited prominent thermal stability, high dispersion and excellent tribological performance, achieving 28.4% and 70.7% reduction in average friction coefficient and wear volumes compared with based oils, respectively. The formation process of dense and stable multi-layer tribo-film induces the reorganization of the sliding interface, for reducing friction and wear between friction pairs. More interestingly, through the analysis of worn surfaces and debris, the enhancement on TiO2/rGO stability caused by their interfacial interaction prevents the structure of rGO from being destroyed, forming the tough tribo-film. Meanwhile, TiO2 acting as the nano-bearing mechanism played the crucial role in friction reduction. Environmentally friendly preparation and efficient lubrication make TiO2/rGO a potential compound lubricating additive.

Abstract:A solid-liquid synergetic lubricating system has been designed to develop a novel self-lubricating nickel matrix composite. The graphene-nickel (G-Ni) matrix composite with porous structure was fabricated by in situ growing graphene in bulk nickel using a powder metallurgy method. The porous structures of the composite were used to store polyalphaolefin (PAO) oil for self-lubricating. It is found that the G-Ni matrix composite under oil lubrication condition exhibited superior tribological properties as compared to pure nickel and the composite under dry sliding condition. The prestored oil was released from pores to the sliding surface forming a lubricating oil film during friction process. This lubricating oil film can protect the worn surface from severe oxidation, and help the formation and transfer of a carbon-based solid tribofilm derived from graphene and lubricating oil. This solid (graphene)-liquid (oil) synergistic lubricating mechanism is responsible for the reduction of friction coefficient and improvement of wear resistance of the in situ fabricated G-Ni matrix composite.

The Tribological Properties of Solid Lubrication Graphite Coatings Prepared by a Sol-Gel Method

Abstract:Graphite is an effective solid lubricant due to its self-lubricating properties. However, in practical environments such as ambient air and vacuum, the coefficient of friction (COF) of graphite is still high, resulting in serious wear that limits applications. In this study, two methods are proposed to improve the tribological properties of HPG510, including alcohol-processed two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials as surface lubricating additives and deposition of a diamond-like carbon (DLC) film on the graphite surfaces. The results show that the COF of graphite decreases from 0.25 to 0.06 when lubricated by graphene oxide (GO)-processed alcohol solution. Similar performance is also observed for fluorinated graphene (GF), and tungsten disulfide (WS2) plus graphene (G) processed solutions. The identified mechanism is the combined lubrication effect of anhydrous alcohol and 2D lubricant materials. Meanwhile, the DLC-deposited graphite not only has a lower COF (~0.10) but also possesses a significant enhancement of the wear resistance. An interesting finding about the anti-friction phenomenon is that some bulk DLC blocks are embedded in the lubricating tribolayer. The present work can provide reliable experimental evidence and a theoretical basis to expand the application field of bulk graphite.
Fabrication of 3D porous graphene materials for oil-based lubrication: Tribological and wear performance

Abstract:Micro- and nano-scale carbon materials have been extensively investigated as additives in lubricants owing to their remarkable capability for friction reduction and enhancement of thermal conductivity within lubrication systems. Nevertheless, it is still highly desirable for oil-based lubricants to involve well-dispersed ultrafine carbonaceous particles without complicated chemical modification. Herein, we present a strategy to achieve 3D graphene additive in lubricants based on rapid laser irradiation. Notably, PAO4 containing 3D laser-induced graphene (LIG) additive exhibits excellent tribological properties in comparison with many other unmodified carbonaceous materials, including graphene, graphene oxide, single-wall nanotubes, and carbon black. In addition, the lubrication properties of PAO4 can be significantly improved by manipulating the concentration of the 3D LIG additive. With the addition of only 0.1 wt% 3D LIG-10, PAO4 lubricant system shows a reduction of 22% in coefficient of friction (COF) and a reduction of 95% in terms of wear coefficient compared to the base oil. In this work we provided a new strategy to produce 3D graphene oil additives for excellent tribological and wear performance.

Abstract:Nanofluids have excellent lubrication and high thermal conductivity. However, the agglomeration and sedimentation produced by the large surface energy of nanoparticles in base liquid threaten the long-term dispersion stability and impact the wide application of nanofluid. In this work, based on the self-assemble behavior and continuous network structure formed by low molecular weight organic gelator, the uniform clusters were formed through regulating the kinetics behavior in the gelling process. The dragging effect was demonstrated by oleic acid - sodium dodecyl sulfate (OA-SDS) bicomponent gelator and graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets. The results showed that GO nanofluids dispersed by OA-SDS were stable for more than 12 months. The well-dispersed GO nanofluid exhibited better anti-friction and anti-wear properties under both immersion and electrostatic minimum quantity lubrication conditions. Moreover, the lower contact angle, surface tension and droplet size of nanofluids after charging improved the wettability on the frictional interface. The GO adsorption film formed on the friction interface protected the tribochemical reaction film of iron oxide and prevented the occurrence of sintering of base oil.
