Abstract:Development of energy-efficient and low-cost desalination techniques is of pivotal importance, and reverse osmosis (RO) is regarded as one of the most promising solutions to tackle the world water crisis and has been widely deployed for large-scale and distributed water desalination. Graphene with nanopores was considered as a promising desalination membrane due to its unique properties. However, the intrinsic complexity of the desalination process, together with the various tunable properties of the membranes/nanopores themselves, makes accurate prediction of the performance or designing of new materials challenging. Machine learning (ML) techniques are superior in analyzing physical processes from multiple aspects, which could facilitate the rational design of high-performance desalination membranes. In this work, it was discovered that salt rejection mainly depends on the pore shape, pore area, and applied pressure and that water permeation mainly depends on the pore area and applied pressure from the ML study. The physical-chemical analysis based on the ion density and water density along the nanopore offers us a deep understanding of the effect of the pore shape on salt rejection and water permeation. In light of the results of ML and the analysis of physicochemical properties, we design the graphene pore with a particular pore shape, which could achieve high water permeation with high salt rejection. ML combined with high-throughput computation methods could help us design the material with excellent performance for desalination.
An Ultrahigh‐Flux Nanoporous Graphene Membrane for Sustainable Seawater Desalination using Low‐Grade Heat

Abstract:Membrane distillation has attracted great attention in the development of sustainable desalination and zero-discharge processes because of its possibility of recovering 100% water and the potential for integration with low-grade heat, such as solar energy. However, the conventional membrane structures and materials afford limited flux thus obstructing its practical application. Here, ultrathin nanoporous graphene membranes are reported by selectively forming thin graphene layers on the top edges of a highly porous anodic alumina oxide support, which creates short and fast transport pathways for water vapor but not liquid. The process avoids the challenging pore-generation and substrate-transfer processes required to prepare regular graphene membranes. In the direct-contact membrane distillation mode under a mild temperature pair of 65/25 °C, the nanoporous graphene membranes show an average water flux of 421.7 L m-2 h-1 with over 99.8% salt rejection, which is an order of magnitude higher than any reported polymeric membranes. The mechanism for high water flux is revealed by detailed characterizations and theoretical modeling. Outdoor field tests using water from the Red Sea heated under direct sunlight radiation show that the membranes have an average water flux of 86.3 L m-2 h-1 from 8 am to 8 pm, showing a great potential for real applications in seawater desalination.

Abstract:Freshwater scarcity has emerged as a prominent bottleneck for global sustainable development, and all countries are sharing a serious reality. Currently, the search for a high-performance, two-dimensional (2D) desalination membrane remains a tremendous challenge. A high-throughput screening involving density functional theory–machine learning (DFT-ML) framework is considered to be an essential avenue to tackle this dilemma. Here, desalination membranes with desirable salt ion retention, water flux, mechanical properties, and service life are selected by particle swarm algorithms. Subsequently, a typical screened-out structure is verified by multiple simulation technology. The results of DFT and ML show that the 2D desalination membranes can be ingeniously singled out by energy density (8.4–8.8 eV/atom), adsorption energy (<−0.5 eV), and mechanical properties parameters (C(θ) > 32 GPa, v(θ) > 0.25). To test the effectiveness of this high-throughput screening method, a 2D desalination membrane (named Dadri-C) was investigated in detail by first-principles and molecular dynamics. We found that Dadri-C has favorable mechanical, thermodynamic, and dynamical stabilities. Dadri-C features sufficient salt ion adsorption sites and flexible electronic structure and confirms excellent selectivity. Further, it exhibits 100% Cl– salt rejection efficiency in the simulation, while achieving a 98.2% Na+ rejection efficiency even at 90 MPa. The maximum water flux obtained while maintaining efficient salt rejection amounts to 525.9 L·cm–2·day–1·MPa–1. Through elaborate screening, we also discovered that the mechanical properties of Dadri-C are acceptable. It also features a self-cleaning function conducive to recycling, indicating that the screening strategy fulfilled the intended target. This proposed research could introduce innovative ideas for efficient screening and design of desalination membrane, which is expected to confer significant opportunities in promoting desalination technology.

Interfacial Ions Sieving for Ultrafast and Complete Desalination through 2D Nanochannel Defined Graphene Composite Membranes

Abstract:The layered graphene membrane has high potential for efficient desalination owing to its frictionless surface and hydrophobic nature. However, it has not been demonstrated so far due to the challenges related to controlling membrane microstructure. Herein, we develop a facile and simple thiol–ene click method to prepare a perfluoro-alkyl grafted graphene (fGraphene) membrane on porous ceramic, which features an ultrahigh antiwetting surface, oriented mesoporous surface entrances, and a well-defined interlamellar spacing of ∼1.1 nm. With vacuum membrane distillation, the fGraphene membranes post ∼100% rejections to the small ions of seawater, at least 1 order of magnitude higher water fluxes than those of commercial membranes and graphene-oxide-based membranes, as well as robust stability in the desalination. Fast NaCl desalinations on the fGraphene membrane were also confirmed by the reverse/forward osmosis tests. The complete rejection of ions and high flux are attributed to the interfacial sieving effect over the 2D nanochannels as well as the vapor-phase transport in the mesoscale channels, which is fundamentally different from the solution–diffusion mechanism of dense polymeric membranes and the size-sieving mechanism of microporous membranes. Abstract:Significance Direct solar desalination, which produces desalinated water directly using solar energy with minimum carbon footprint, is considered a promising technology to address the global water scarcity. Here, we report a solar desalination device, with efficient two-dimensional water supply and suppressed thermal loss, which can enable an efficient (80% under one-sun illumination) and effective (four orders salinity decrement) solar desalination. The energy transfer efficiency of this foldable graphene oxide film-based device fabricated by a scalable process is independent of water quantity and can be achieved without optical or thermal supporting systems, therefore significantly improving the scalability and feasibility of this technology toward a complementary portable and personalized water solution.

Abstract:Two-dimensional materials represented by graphene are widely used to fabricate membranes with nanopores or nanochannels and have shown great promise in the field of mass separation, especially seawater desalination. We review the research progress and applications of graphene and its derivatives, including single-layer graphene, nanoporous graphene and graphene oxide, in the field of seawater desalination. Based on an overview of the intrinsic properties of graphene, the permeability and selectivity of porous graphene membranes with one-dimensional nanopores, and lamellar graphene oxide membranes with two-dimensional nanochannels are first discussed. In addition, different preparation processes and their effects on the permselectivity of graphene-based membranes are compared. Methods for regulating the mechanism of the permselectivity of graphene-based membranes for various solutions are analyzed. The use of graphene-based membranes in seawater desalination and the existing limitations are summarized, and prospects for future developments of this research area are proposed.

Abstract:Solar-driven vapor generation is one of the most promising techniques for seawater desalination, which has attracted broad attention. However, a significant challenge remains for achieving a low-cost and easy-to-manufacture solar-driven steam generation device with higher evaporation efficiency, excellent mechanical performance, and good durability. Herein, we develop a simple and cost-effective method to prepare graphene/cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) lamella network (GCLN) with melamine foam (MF) as the skeleton. Thanks to the excellent light absorption properties of graphene and excellent hydrophilic properties of CNCs, GCLN exhibits an evaporation rate of 1.66 kg m-2 h-1 and an evaporation efficiency of 97.5% under 1 kW m-2 of solar radiation. In addition, GCLN can maintain its structural stability and evaporation performance during a series of harsh condition tests and durability tests. Due to the excellent processability of MF, the 3D-shape GCLN can be easily designed for an enhanced evaporation rate of 1.59 kg m-2 h-1, which is better than the theoretical limit of the evaporation rate. The novel design presented in this work offers a new avenue to develop solar steam generation devices for low-cost and large-scale seawater desalination under natural sunlight conditions, which is especially attractive for the urgent fresh water supply in remote areas.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Evaporating seawater and separating salt from water is one of the most promising solutions for global water scarcity. State-of-the-art water desalination devices combining solar harvesting and heat localization for evaporation using nanomaterials still suffer from several issues in energy efficiency, long-term performance, salt fouling, light blocking, and clean water collection in real-world applications. To address these issues, this work devises plasma-enabled multifunctional all-carbon nanoarchitectures with on-surface waterways formed by nitrogen-doped hydrophilic graphene nanopetals (N-fGPs) seamlessly integrated onto the external surface of hydrophobic self-assembled graphene foam (sGF). The N-fGPs simultaneously transport water and salt ions, absorb sunlight, serve as evaporation surfaces, then capture the salts, followed by self-cleaning. The sGF ensures effective thermal insulation and enhanced heat localization, contributing to high solar-vapor efficiency of 88.6 +/- 2.1%. Seamless connection between N-fGPs and sGF and self-cleaning of N-fGP structures by redissolution of the captured salts in the waterways lead to long-term stability over 240 h of continuous operation in real seawater without performance degradation, and a high daily evaporation yield of 15.76 kg m(-2). By eliminating sunlight blocking and guiding condensed vapor, a high clean water collection ratio of 83.5% is achieved. The multiple functionalities make the current nanoarchitectures promising as multipurpose advanced energy materials.

Abstract:Membrane fouling and scaling are two challenges for efficient treatment of hypersaline wastewater, greatly hindering separation performance and operation stability of desalination membranes. In this work, we report a smooth ceramic-based graphene desalination membrane, exhibiting enhanced anti-fouling and anti-scaling ability and operational performance for efficient treatment of both synthetic and real industrial wastewaters , outperforming polypropylene (PP) membrane. For treatment of hypersaline waters containing organic or inorganic substance , we demonstrate that the graphene membrane exhibits more stable water flux and almost complete salt rejection (>99.9%) during constant operation. Enhanced anti-fouling and desalination performance of graphene membrane could be attributed to the lower attractive interaction force with foulant (−4.65 mJ m –2 ), lower surface roughness ( R a = 2.2 ± 0.1 nm) and higher affinity with water than PP membrane. Furthermore, an anti-scaling mechanism enabled by graphene membrane is evidenced, with a highlight on the roles of smooth graphene surface with lower roughness, less nucleation sites and lower binding force with scaling crystals. Importantly, even for industrial petrochemical wastewater, such a graphene membrane also exhibits relatively more stable water flux and promising oil and ions rejection during long-term operation, outperforming PP membrane. This study further confirms a promising practical application potential of robust ceramic-based graphene membrane for efficient treatment of more challenging hypersaline wastewater with complicated compositions, which is not feasible by conventional desalination membranes.

Abstract:Solar desalination that exploits interfacial evaporation represents a promising solution to global water scarcity. Real-world feedstocks (e.g., natural seawater and contaminated water) include oil contamination issues, raising a compelling need for desalination systems that offer anti-oil-fouling capability; however, it is still challenging to prepare oil-repellent and meanwhile water-attracting surfaces. This work demonstrates a concept of molecularly dispersing functional F and Na sites on plasma-made vertically oriented graphene nanosheets to achieve an in-air and in-water oleophobic, hydrophilic surface. The graphene architecture presents high in-air (138°) and in-water (145°) oil contact angles, with simultaneously high water affinity (0°). Such surface wettability is enabled by oleophobic, hydrophobic -CFx, and hydrophilic -COONa groups of the molecules that disperse on graphene surfaces; low-dispersion (0.439 mJ m-2) and high-polarity (95.199 mJ m-2) components of the solid surface tension; and increased surface roughness produced by graphene edges. The graphene nanostructures pump water upward by capillary action but repel oil from the surface, leading to complete in-water and in-air oil rejection and universal anti-oil-fouling capability for solar desalination. Consequently, stable solar-vapor energy efficiency of more than 85% is achieved regardless of whether the feedstock is pure or oil-contaminated water (e.g., a mixture of oil floating on water, an oil-in-water emulsion), resulting in the efficient production of clean water over several days. This outstanding performance is attributed to the universal (both in-water and in-air) oleophobic wettability, together with high light absorptance contributed by nanotraps, fast interfacial heat transfer enhanced by finlike nanostructures, and accelerated evaporation enabled by sharp graphene edges.
Confined lamellar channels structured by multilayer graphene for high-efficiency desalination

Abstract:As a versatile two-dimensional (2D) material, graphene has attracted an increasing amount of attention from different fields, e.g., Geim et al. (Science 2019, 363: 145–148) experimentally reported artificial graphene capillaries with a 2D slit of a few angstroms in height, where water fully moves through these capillaries and all salt ions are excluded. To understand the phenomenon observed experimentally, here we systematically investigate hydrodynamic properties of the lamellar graphene channels with different interlayer height, such as self-diffusion, viscosity and permeability of waters. Molecular dynamics simulations show that water viscosity decreases with the increasing of channel height, while the diffusion coefficient and flux of water enhance. For the channel with a height of 0.78 nm, the water permeability is far larger than the values of commercial reverse osmosis membranes, simultaneously exhibiting a salt rejection of >95%. Besides, the simulated results show that the flexible channels initially filled with water will not collapse when the channels are formed by more than two layers of graphene sheets on each side. This work highlights the stability mechanism of the graphene channel, which will show its importance for future development of graphene membranes.

Abstract:The multilayer graphene-based membranes have shown well prospect in seawater desalination application owing to their well-defined 2D for rapid water penetration and excellent ion rejection. In this work, the lamellar GRA-X membranes with different hydrophilicity were constructed by stacking functional graphene sheets layer-by-layer. The effect of interlayer spacing and the hydrophilicity of membranes on desalination performance was discussed. The relationship between the hydrophilicity of GRA-X membranes and water flux was also explored by non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations (NEMD). It was found that the water flux in GRA-X membranes increased with the decrease hydrophilicity of graphene membrane, and it could be regulated by adjusting the interaction between water molecules and functional groups or controlling the order of water molecules in the pore channels. The rejection rate was mainly determined by the effective distance of interlayer spacing in GRA-X membranes.

Abstract:Desalination that produces clean freshwater from seawater holds the promise of solving the global water shortage for drinking, agriculture and industry. However, conventional desalination technologies such as reverse osmosis and thermal distillation involve large amounts of energy consumption, and the semipermeable membranes widely used in reverse osmosis face the challenge to provide a high throughput at high salt rejection. Here we find by comprehensive molecular dynamics simulations and first principles modeling that pristine graphyne, one of the graphene-like one-atom-thick carbon allotropes, can achieve 100% rejection of nearly all ions in seawater including Na(+), Cl(-), Mg(2+), K(+) and Ca(2+), at an exceptionally high water permeability about two orders of magnitude higher than those for commercial state-of-the-art reverse osmosis membranes at a salt rejection of ~98.5%. This complete ion rejection by graphyne, independent of the salt concentration and the operating pressure, is revealed to be originated from the significantly higher energy barriers for ions than for water. This intrinsic specialty of graphyne should provide a new possibility for the efforts to alleviate the global shortage of freshwater and other environmental problems.

Abstract:Controlling the pore sizes of graphene-based membranes is essential for exploring their transport properties and related applications such as water desalination. We demonstrated the scalable fabrication of ultrathin graphene membranes with precisely controlled subnanometer pores by co-assembly of graphene oxide nanosheet and polymer on a porous ceramic substrate and subsequent reduction and carbonization. The resulting graphene membranes with an intercalated structure show unprecedented molecular-sieving water evaporation properties, achieving water evaporation flux of 49.8 ± 1.5–472.3 ± 14.2 L m−2 h−1 and 99.99% NaCl rejection at 20–70 °C and a vacuum of −800 mbar. The water flux is remarkably higher than that of conventional microporous membranes and greatly surpasses that of the state-of-the art membranes with various pore sizes. This work provides a new insight into water transport and evaporation through graphene subnanometer pores, and a new strategy for membrane design for water desalination and other evaporation separations.

Abstract:Seawater desalination is believed to be the most promising solution to solve the current crisis of global freshwater deficiency. The applications of nanoporous graphene filters and biological water channels have greatly improved the desalination efficiency. Here, we report the auspicious performance of a tunable nanoporous desalination filter using monolayer r-N-GDY through combination of molecular dynamics simulations and first-principles calculations. In striking contrast to graphene, the r-N-GDY filter can be turned between a high-flux "open" state and a "closed" state by applying tensile strain, yielding a highly tunable nanopore interface. The critical transition between "open" and "closed" states occurs at moderate strain of 4%. For the "open" state, the water permeability reaches 47 L/cm 2 /day/MPa with strong ion rejection which is superior than almost all of previous reported membrane structures. Given these advantages, the r-N-GDY presents great prospects as controllable nanoporous membrane for efficient desalination and other applications.

Abstract:Solar‐driven interfacial evaporation (SIE) is a promising desalination technology that utilizes solar energy and seawater. However, most SIE systems are limited by high cost, complex fabrication, and low salt tolerance. Here, we present a simple method for preparing a 3D graphene/carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/polypyrrole foam (GCPF) evaporator that exhibits high evaporation efficiency, excellent mechanical performance, and stable solar desalination of high‐salinity brine. The excellent processability of MF enables the easy preparation of the 3D GCPF, which exhibits an enhanced evaporation rate of 4.012 kg m‐2 h‐1 and a photothermal conversion efficiency of 97.8 % under one sun irradiation. Compared with the 2D sample, the GCPF‐3 evaporator utilizes solar energy more efficiently and maintains higher evaporation performance even when the light angle changes. Moreover, the 3D GCPF showed remarkable salt tolerance and durability, achieving a stable evaporation rate of 4.005 kg m‐2 h‐1 for 30 h with a salinity of 25 wt.%, which is the best reported result among solar desalination systems. This work provides new insights into the design of 3D graphene composite foams and demonstrates their potential applications in continuous solar desalination. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Interfacial solar desalination has been widely favored as a convenient technology to relieve the prominent lack of clean water. However, it remains urgent and challenging to develop materials that can simultaneously reduce heat loss and provide effective channels for water transport without salt accumulation. In this work, we developed a free-standing Janus 3D graphene based evaporator modified by a wettability-controllable UV-O 3 treatment method. The upper hydrophilic layer of the Janus 3DG plays the role of continuous water supplement for evaporation, while the bottom hydrophobic layer could support material floating on the water surface to ensure effective light absorption and contribute to heat loss reduction. Taking advantage of the synergistic effect of the structure, Janus 3DG delivers a stable water evaporation rate of 1.71 kg m −2 h −1 under 1 kW m −2 illumination, a highly efficient conversion efficiency of 94.1 % and exhibits excellent salt-resistance in high concentration simulated seawater (10 wt%) without salt accumulation. The Janus 3DG had satisfactory availability for solar desalination and wastewater purification. Our study establishes and validates a simple method for fabricating an efficient solar-driven evaporator for desalination.

Abstract:The seawater desalination through porous graphene membrane is considered as promising candidate technology for water purification, but the desalination mechanism is seldom concerned at nanoscale. In this study, the microstructures of pressure driven seawater desalination based on porous graphene membrane was established, and the desalination performance was studied by means of molecular dynamics simulations. Based on the observed dynamic evolution of the water molecules transportation behaviors and microstructures, the salt rejection and water permeation mechanism were proposed. The effects of graphene pore diameter, external pressure and temperature on the desalination performance were investigated. The results indicate that the water flux can be increased by 67.20% when the external pressure increases from 100 MPa to 200 MPa. Under the external pressure of 300 MPa, when the diameter of graphene pore increased from 1 nm to 2 nm and 3 nm, the number of filtered water molecule is increased by 48.83% and 67.33%, respectively. The filtered water molecules can be increased by 4.06% with the increase of temperature from 300 K to 360 K. The possible desalination mechanism was explored and revealed by us, which is expected to be helpful for efficient seawater desalination.
