Abstract:To investigate the potential of using Barium (Ba) isotopes to trace recycled crustal materials, we report high-precision Ba isotopic compositions for 22 well-characterized samples of Cenozoic basalts from the Taihang Mountains, North China Craton. The basalts have δ138/134Ba [= (138Ba/134Basample/138Ba/134BaSRM3104a – 1) × 1000] of −0.06‰ to +0.03‰(±0.05‰,2SD), lower than the depleted upper mantle (+0.03‰ to +0.15‰). Because Ba isotope fractionation during basaltic magmatic differentiation is negligible, the light Ba isotopic compositions likely reflect the involvement of isotopically light crustal materials in the mantle source. The Ba isotopic variations, combined with the data of elements and SrNd isotopes of the basalts, indicate that the light Ba isotopic compositions mainly resulted from marine sediments rather than altered oceanic crust. The quantitative modeling using Sr-Nd-Ba isotopic compositions suggests that about 0.5% to 3% of marine sediments were involved in generating the continental basalts. Our study here highlights the potential of using Ba isotopes to trace recycled materials in the mantle.

Abstract:Barium (Ba) isotopes can be used as potential tracers for crustal material recycling in the mantle. Determination of the Ba isotope composition of the depleted mantle is essential for such applications. However, Ba isotope data for mantle-derived basalts are still rare. In this study, we reported high-precision Ba isotope data of 30 oceanic basalts including 25 mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORBs) from geochemically and geologically diverse mid-ocean ridge segments and five back-arc basin basalts. The δ138/134Ba values of these samples varied from −0.06‰ to +0.11‰, with no systematic cross-region variation. Together with published data, we constrained the average δ138/134Ba of global MORBs to +0.05‰±0.09‰ (2 standard deviation, n = 51). Based on depleted MORBs that have (La/Sm)N < 0.8, low 87Sr/86Sr (< 0.70263), and low Ba/Th < 71.3, we estimated the average δ138/134Ba of the depleted MORB mantle (DMM) as + 0.05‰ ± 0.05‰ (2SD, n = 16) that is significantly lower than the DMM (≈ 0.14‰) reported previously. If a new estimation of the DMM is applied, it is unreasonable to infer that the Ba isotope signatures of the “enriched-type” MORBs (E-MORBs) could be attributed to pervasive sediment recycling in the upper mantle. We, therefore, conclude that the Ba isotope compositions of the E-MORBs could be sourced from the incorporation of subducted altered oceanic crust and/or sediments depending on the Ba isotope composition and other geochemical information of the local mantle.
Barium isotopes reveal pervasive recycling of oceanic crust in the source of mid-ocean ridge basalts

Abstract:Mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORBs) provide useful information for unraveling the composition and heterogeneity of the upper mantle. However, it is still not clear to what extent the enriched MORB (E-MORB) results from recycling of subducted crustal materials or intra-mantle differentiation [1,2,3]. Here we show that Ba isotope compositions in MORBs can be used to decipher these processes because of the high crust/mantle ratios of Ba contents [4,5] and large fractionation of Ba isotopes in crustal materials [6]. We measured Ba isotope compositions of ~ 25 MORB samples from East Pacific Rise, Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Gakkel Ridge, and South East Indian Ridge. The precision for δ137/134BaSRM3104a is better than 0.04‰ (2SD) based on analyses of standards and duplicated samples. The δ137/134BaSRM3104a of these MORBs range from -0.05‰ to 0.08‰, slightly different from the data in previous study (δ137/134BaSRM3104a of 0.01‰ to 0.11‰) [7]. Nielsen et al. (2018) suggested that Ba isotope variation in MORBs is controlled by sediment addition in the depleted mantle. However, we find that MORBs have larger variations of δ137/134Ba with increasing Ba/Th and radiogenic Sr isotopes, not consistent with a simple mixing model between the upper mantle and oceanic sediments. Because Ba isotopes are unlikely significantly fractionated during mantle melting and basaltic magma differentiation, our observation supports the involvement of recycled oceanic crust with δ137/134BaSRM3104a ranging from -0.17‰ to 0.30‰ in the mantle sources of the E-MORBs. A mixing model suggests that addition of a few per cent of the recycled altered oceanic crust can account for the Ba isotopic signature of the MORBs.
Constraints of Barium Isotopes on Recycling of Ancient Oceanic Crust in the Mantle of the South China Sea

Abstract:As surface reservoirs (e.g. sediments and altered oceanic crust) have extremely high barium (Ba) concentrations and distinctive Ba isotope compositions compared to the mantle, Ba isotopes have the potential to trace crustal recycling in the mantle. The sediment components and fluids derived from altered oceanic crust in arc lavas and continental basalts have been identified using Ba isotopes, while the geochemical behavior of Ba in subducted oceanic crust remains enigmatic. A series of volcanic breccia that temporally evolved from carbonated silicate clasts to alkali basalts in the South China Sea (SCS) drilled by the Integrated Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Site U1431 was suggested to originate from the mantle source contaminated by recycled oceanic crust. To understand the potential of using Ba stable isotopes to trace recycled oceanic crust in the mantle, we report high-precision Ba isotope compositions of these samples, together with alkali basalts from adjacent Hainan Island to constrain the Ba isotope characteristics of the Hainan mantle plume. The carbonated silicate clasts and alkali basalts from the SCS display extremely high Ba concentrations and are thus insensitive to magma evolution during ascent through the thin lithospheric mantle and proper to trace crustal materials in their mantle source using Ba isotopes. These samples have variable Ba isotope compositions ranging from delta Ba-138/134 = -0.10 to +0.05 parts per thousand, implying local mantle isotopic heterogeneity underlying the SCS. The Ba isotope characteristics of some samples, which are much lighter than those of the mantle-derived carbonatites and global mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORBs), in conjunction with trace element ratios and radiogenic isotope compositions, reflect significant incorporation of recycled carbonated oceanic crust after subduction-related dehydration. The rising of the Hainan mantle plume offers the most reasonable interpretation of the entrainment of the recycled oceanic crust in the carbonated silicate magmatism beneath the SCS. Alkali basalts from Hainan Island display Ba isotope characteristics slightly heavier than the SCS carbonated silicate clasts and alkali basalts. It implies that the Hainan mantle plume underlying Hainan Island contains less recycled-oceanic-crust components than that underneath the SCS. This study highlights Ba isotopes as effective tracers of recycled oceanic crust in the mantle.

Abstract:Although deep carbon recycling plays an important role in the atmospheric CO2 budget and climate changes through geological time, the precise mechanisms remain poorly understood. Since recycled sedimentary carbonate through plate subduction is the main light-delta Mg-26 reservoir within deep-Earth, Mg isotope variation in mantle-derived melts provides a novel perspective when investigating deep carbon cycling. Here, we show that the Late Cretaceous and Cenozoic continental basalts from 13 regions covering the whole of eastern China have low delta Mg-26 isotopic compositions, while the Early Cretaceous basalts from the same area and the island arc basalts from circum-Pacific subduction zones have mantle-like or heavy Mg isotopic characteristics. Thus, a large-scalemantle low delta Mg-26 anomaly in eastern China has been delineated, suggesting the contribution of sedimentary carbonates recycled into the upper mantle, but limited into the lower mantle. This large-scale spatial and temporal variation ofMg isotopes in the mantle places severe constraints on deep carbon recycling via oceanic subduction.

Abstract:The compositions of ocean island basalts (OIB) can record signatures of ancient subducted crust that has been recycled through the mantle. Based on their radiogenic isotope, major and trace element compositions, several geochemically-extreme mantle compositions are suggested to host components of recycled crust. Barium (Ba) stable isotopes can serve as a tracer of crustal recycling into the mantle sources of OIB because 1) Ba isotopes are fractionated in surface crustal reservoirs and 2) Ba is highly enriched in crust relative to the mantle. Therefore, the Ba isotopic compositions of the subducted crust could be detected in OIB. Here, we characterized Ba isotopic compositions of fresh OIB from hotspots sampling a range of mantle compositions. We first explore delta Ba-138/134 (permil deviation of the Ba-138/Ba-134 ratio from the standard SRM3104a) in a suite of Hekla samples and demonstrate that magmatic differentiation does not impact the delta Ba-138/134 values of OIB over MgO concentrations from 2.3 to 8.0 wt%, and higher MgO lavas are unlikely to experience delta Ba-138/134 fractionation. After excluding OIB samples that experienced low-temperature alteration-which may shift the delta Ba-138/134 values of samples away from their mantle sources-the delta Ba-138/134 values of Samoan (including EM2 and high He-3/He-4) lavas range from -0.07 to 0.07 parts per thousand, while for Cook-Austral (HIMU) lavas the delta Ba-138/134 values range from 0.00 to 0.11 parts per thousand, and for St. Helena (HIMU) samples the delta Ba-138/134 values range from 0.02 to 0.05 parts per thousand. High He-3/He-4 (> 20 Ra, ratio to atmosphere) lavas from Vestfir eth ir of Iceland (-0.09 to 0.14 parts per thousand) and Samoa (-0.02 to 0.01 parts per thousand) also exhibit Ba isotopic variability. An extreme EM2 lava examined here (Nd-143/Nd-144 = 0.512582) has lighter Ba isotopic composition (-0.07 +/- 0.02 parts per thousand, 2SE) than the depleted mantle sampled by MORB (0.05 +/- 0.05 parts per thousand, 2SD). The Samoan lavas show a possible positive trend between delta Ba-138/134 values and Nd-143/Nd-144 ratios, and can be modeled as a binary mixing between the high He-3/He-4 (FOZO) mantle and recycled heterogeneous continental crust. In contrast, the extreme HIMU composition (Pb-206/Pb-204 > 21.7) shows heavier Ba isotope signatures (0.11 +/- 0.02 parts per thousand, 2SE); delta Ba-138/134 values positively correlate strongly with Pb-206/Pb-204 ratios in HIMU lavas, consistent with a contribution from recycled oceanic crust. Abstract:'Recycled' crustal materials, returned from the Earth's surface to the mantle by subduction, have long been invoked to explain compositional heterogeneity in the upper mantle. Yet increasingly, problems have been noted with this model. The debate can be definitively addressed using stable isotope ratios, which should only significantly vary in primitive, mantle-derived materials as a consequence of recycling. Here we present data showing a notable range in lithium isotope ratios in basalts from the East Pacific Rise, which correlate with traditional indices of mantle heterogeneity (for example, 143Nd/144Nd ratios). Such co-variations of stable and radiogenic isotopes in melts from a normal ridge segment provide critical evidence for the importance of recycled material in generating chemical heterogeneity in the upper mantle. Contrary to many models, however, the elevated lithium isotope ratios of the 'enriched' East Pacific Rise lavas imply that subducted ocean crust is not the agent of enrichment. Instead, we suggest that fluid-modified mantle, which is enriched during residency in a subduction zone, is mixed back into the upper mantle to cause compositional variability.
Recycling of Marine Carbonate Induced Calcium Isotope Heterogeneity of Arc Magmas in Subduction Zones

Abstract:Calcium (Ca) is an essential element constituting sedimentary carbonate in subducting sediments. Ca isotopic characteristics of subduction-related rocks could provide insight into the behavior and budget of carbonate and carbon cycles in subduction zones, due to the distinctive δ44/40Ca ranges of sedimentary carbonate with respect to the mantle. Here, we studied the Ca isotopic compositions of arc magmas from the Northern Luzon arc (NLA), which are evolved from a depleted mantle metasomatized by slab-derived fluids and sediment melts. The δ44/40Ca values range from 0.76 ± 0.04‰ to 1.01 ± 0.03‰ and cover the typical ranges for bulk silica earth (BSE, ~ 0.94‰) and fresh mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB, ~ 0.83‰). The Ca isotopes of NLA volcanics are not dominantly determined by the effects of mantle partial melting or fractional crystallization, nor significantly modified by secondary alteration. Instead, the δ44/40Ca values of NLA volcanics are controlled by the subduction-related metasomatism. The metasomatism by slab-derived fluids (mainly expelled from altered oceanic crust, AOC) dramatically elevated the contents of fluid-mobile elements (e.g., Ba and Pb) with respect to fluid-immobile elements (e.g., Ce). This process, however, rarely modified the Ca isotopes, possibly ascribed to the δ44/40Ca similarity between AOC and the depleted mantle. The δ44/40Ca values significantly correlated with subduction indicators (e.g., Sr-Nd isotopes, Ba/Nb, Ce/Pb, and Nb/La), demonstrating the Ca isotopes of NLA volcanics are mainly controlled by the metasomatism of sediment melts subducting from the South China Sea (SCS). Based on the thermal structures and chemical compositions of sediments subducting into global trenches, we propose that carbonate Ca isotopic signals can only be observed in the arcs with high sedimentary Ca fluxes and temperature-pressure conditions well beyond the solidus of H2O-saturated sediment melting, e.g., NLA, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Colombia, Peru, South Chile, North Vanuatu, New Zealand, and Kermadec. The absence of such signals in other arcs suggests either limited sedimentary fluxes or much of the subducting sedimentary carbonate has been survived during plate subduction to enter the deep mantle.
Highly Unradiogenic Pb Isotopes Revealed by Plagioclase‐Hosted Melt Inclusions in E‐MORB from the South China Sea

Abstract:Mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORBs) can record heterogeneity of the upper mantle. Early crystallized minerals and their melt inclusions commonly record greater isotopic variability than whole-rocks and are powerful tools to investigate the mantle source. In this study, we develop a new in situ Pb analytical protocol for Pb-poor materials (sub-ppm level) and apply it to the plagioclase-hosted melt-inclusions from IODP Expedition 349 Site U1433, South China Sea (SCS). Together with element mapping, in situ major and trace element analyzes and in situ Sr isotopes of plagioclase phenocrysts, we show that unlike the low and uniform whole-rock Sr-87/Sr-86 ratios, the plagioclase phenocrysts record extreme Sr isotopic heterogeneity. Strontium isotopic heterogeneity is observed between crystals even in a single thin section. Based on the high an contents of plagioclase phenocrysts and high Mg# values of their melt inclusions, we propose they crystallized early in the magma chamber and were most likely formed in different batches of mantle-derived melts. The plagioclase-hosted melt inclusions show highly variable Pb isotopes, exhibiting a typical linear variation in Pb-207/Pb-204 versus Pb-206/Pb-204. Such a mixing trend indicates an end-member with highly unradiogenic Pb isotopes. The LREE enrichment and negative correlations between La/Sm and Pb isotopes of the melt inclusions, indicate that ancient cratonic lower continent crustal materials, with low time-integrated U/Pb ratios, are likely present in the sub-ridge mantle of the southwest Sub-basin, SCS.
Continuous Supply of Recycled Pacific Oceanic Materials in the Source of Cenozoic Basalts in SE China: the Zhejiang Case

Abstract:Various enriched recycled oceanic components in the source of Cenozoic intra-plate alkaline basalts from eastern China were identified by previous studies. Due to the existence of a stagnant subducted Pacific slab in the mantle transition zone beneath eastern China, it is logical to connect the stagnant slab to the recycled oceanic materials. However, the recycled oceanic materials could also result from ancient subduction events (e.g., Paleo-Tethyan, Paleo-Asian or Izanagi plate subduction) because enriched geochemical signatures of a recycled slab can be preserved in the mantle for longer than 1 Gyr. Investigating the temporal variations of the recycled oceanic materials in the mantle source is a useful way to trace the origin of the basalts. In this article, we have conducted a detailed geochemical study, including major and trace elements and Sr–Nd–Pb isotopes, on two alkaline basalt groups from Zhejiang, SE China, which erupted 26–17 Ma and after 11 Ma, respectively. In particular, we recovered the H2O content of the initial magmas based on the H2O content of the clinopyroxene (cpx) phenocrysts and the partition coefficients of H2O between cpx and basaltic melts. The H2O contents of the Zhejiang basalts range from 1.3 to 2.6 (wt.%), which fall within the range of back-arc basin or island arc basalts. The older basalts are more alkaline and have lower Si and Al contents; higher trace element concentrations; higher La/Yb, Ce/Pb and Nb/La ratios; lower H2O/Ce and Ba/Th ratios; and stronger negative K, Pb, Hf and Ti anomalies than the younger ones. The co-relationships between Ba/La, H2O/Ce, Nb/La, Ce/Pb and Ba/Th in the two groups of the Zhejiang basalts indicate that a recycled dehydrated oceanic alkaline basalt component is needed in the source of the older rocks, along with a depleted mantle component. Meanwhile, an additional recycled dehydrated sediment component was required in the source of the younger rocks. The temporal change in the recycled oceanic materials in the mantle sources of Zhejiang Cenozoic basalts demonstrates that the recycled components can only originate in the stagnant Pacific slab that is the only plate subducted since 100 Ma in this area.
Oxygen and Neodymium Isotope Evidence for Recycling of Juvenile Crust in Northeast China

Abstract:It has been long recognized from Nd and Sr isotopes that depleted mantle sources consist of recycled oceanic materials, but difficulty was encountered in identifying this signature by means of oxygen isotopes because of significant postemplacement hydrothermal alteration. Zircon is expected to preserve this signature because it is resistant to high-temperature hydrothermal alteration. This effect is illustrated by a combined Sm-Nd and oxygen isotope study of whole-rock and mineral samples from a Mesozoic A-type granite at Nianzishan in northeastern China. The Sm-Nd isotope results show positive epsilon(Nd)(t) values of +0.86 to +4.27 with young Nd model ages of 569-846 Ma, manifesting a significant input of newly mantle derived material. The zircon delta(18)O values of 3.12parts per thousand-4.19parts per thousand are significantly lower than the delta(18)O value of 5.3parts per thousand +/- 0.3parts per thousand. for the normal mantle zircon and thus appear to require remelting of hydrothermally altered oceanic crust. The combined Nd-O isotope studies not only provide compelling evidence for geochemical recycling of young juvenile crust by plate subduction, but also demonstrate that the granitic magmas can result from partial melting of mantle-derived rocks that were subjected to seawater-hydrothermal alteration before magma generation. Disequilibrium oxygen isotope fractionations are observed between common rock-forming minerals with significantly lower delta(18)O values for alkali feldspar than seawater, corresponding to meteoric-hydrothermal alteration after magma crystallization.

Abstract:Barium is a large ion lithophile alkaline-earth element and it is also fluid-mobile. Since Ba is highly incompatible during mantle melting, Ba content in the crust is much higher than that in mantle. Ba isotopes can be significantly fractionated in low-temperature conditions or during fluid processes, but Ba isotope fractionation in mafic-intermediate magmatism is negligible. Therefore, Ba isotopes have been recently used as a novel tool to study recycling of subducted materials, especially in tracing the effect of fluid and sediment on the composition of the mantle. It is a prerequisite to estimate the average Ba isotope compositions before applying Ba isotopes to high temperature geochemistry studies. Ba isotope data for the mantle are still rare and controversial. This study summarizes Ba isotope analytical method, fractionation mechanism, and composition of important reservoirs. We focus on Ba isotope variation on basaltic rocks, behavior of Ba isotopes during magmatism and metamorphism, and potential applications. We believe that the future of Ba isotopes will be quite promising.

Abstract:Oceanic basalts show variation in their iron and magnesium isotope compositions. One hypothesis for the origin of this is source variation: radiogenic isotope and trace element abundance studies have long argued that the Earth's upper mantle is geochemically heterogeneous and that subducted crust is a major contributor to this diversity. In contrast, a recent hypothesis posits that stable isotopes record disequilibrium during melt transport and so provide novel insight into the melting process. In this study we investigate the first of these hypotheses, that source heterogeneity explains global Fe-Mg isotope systematics. We compile a global dataset of oceanic basalt Fe and Mg isotopes and complement this with new Fe-Mg isotope data from locations possessing some of the most extreme radiogenic isotope ratios for their setting: ocean island basalts from the Cook-Austral and Society islands and a Mid-Atlantic Ridge basalt. Despite both Fe and Mg isotope systems having the ability to trace recycled crustal material in the mantle, their global systematics are very different in this dataset. The global compilation of primitive oceanic basalts records heavier Fe (higher δ57 Fe) isotope compositions than bulk silicate earth (BSE), but a mixture of heavier and lighter Mg isotope compositions than BSE. By employing a coupled Fe-Mg equilibrium isotope fractionation model during mantle melting we show that much of this isotopic variability can be generated by the mixed melts produced by melting of peridotite mantle containing moderate amounts of recycled crust as a discrete lithology. The Fe isotope composition of the melts is controlled by the bulk isotope composition of the recycled crust (expected to be considerably heavier than BSE, but variable). In contrast, the Mg isotope composition is controlled by source mineralogy. Olivine-poor lithologies such as recycled crust are able to generate large Mg isotope fractionations during melting, both positive and negative (± 0.1‰) relative to the mantle source, depending on the presence of spinel, clinopyroxene or garnet. These melt Mg isotope fractionations are consistent with the Mg isotope compositions of mid-ocean ridge basalts generated by variable depths of mantle melting. Our equilibrium model provides a baseline to test hypotheses of Fe-Mg isotope variability in basalts: our results show that contributions from recycled crust-derived melts, generated in spinel-, pyroxene-, and garnet-bearing mineral assemblages in the mantle, would be able to produce much of the Fe-Mg isotope variability seen in the global compilation of primitive oceanic basalts, without requiring isotopically extreme mantle components (e.g., carbonate with a light Mg isotope signature) or disequilibrium fractionation. However some basalt variability in ocean island settings may indeed fall outside the paradigm of pyroxenite heterogeneity – whilst we consider carbonates unlikely to be important, disequilibrium processes may in these cases play a role.

Abstract:Continental basalts commonly show ocean island basalts (OIB)-like geochemical compositions, and their origin is geochemically linked to metasomatism of the big mantle wedge by the deeply subducting oceanic slab at postarc depths of >200 km. This linkage is tested by a combined study of Ba isotopes with major-trace elements and Sr-Nd isotopes in Cenozoic continental basalts from eastern China. These basalts show OIB-like trace element distribution patterns and depleted to weakly enriched Sr-Nd isotope compositions, suggesting incorporation of the dehydrated slab component into their mantle sources. Their delta Ba-138 values vary from -0.05 parts per thousand to +0.06 parts per thousand, which are lower than the depleted mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB) mantle but similar to island arc basalts, OIB and OIB-like continental flood basalts. The variation of delta Ba-138 values cannot be ascribed to fractional crystallization and crustal contamination of mantle-derived magmas, but it results from mixing of the depleted mantle with the recycled crustal material of low delta Ba-138 values. In other words, the geochemical deviations from the depleted MORB mantle are attributable to the source mixing at mantle depths rather than the crustal contamination at crustal depths. Although the delta Ba-138 values of the dehydrated oceanic crust would be lower than the initially subducting crust based on the lower coordination number of Ba in liquid phases relative to solid phases in the crust, the low delta Ba-138 recycled crustal material including igneous oceanic crust (IOC) and seafloor sediment is still required to produce the low delta Ba-138 values for the studied basalts. The similarity in delta Ba-138 to island arc basalts not only indicates the similarly low delta Ba-138 values for the recycled crustal components in these basalts, but also suggests the limited Ba isotope fractionation during dehydration melting of the subducting oceanic crust at postarc depths.

Abstract:Carbonate, the major carbon reservoir on Earth’s surface, can enter into the mantle by subduction. However, evidence for recycled surficial carbonates in the deep mantle is still scarce. Ocean island basalts from Cook-Austral islands and St. Helena Island, widely called HIMU basalts because of their high μ = 238 U/ 204 Pb sources, are thought to be fed by mantle plumes originating in the lower mantle. Here we report exceptionally high δ 66 Zn values (δ 66 Zn = 0.38 ± 0.03‰) of these HIMU lavas relative to most published data for oceanic basalts (δ 66 Zn = 0.31 ± 0.10‰), which requires a source contributed by isotopically heavy recycled surficial carbonates. During subduction of the oceanic lithosphere, melting of mixed surficial carbonates and basaltic crust in the deep mantle generates carbonatite melts, which metasomatizes the nearby mantle and the resultant carbonated mantle ultimately evolves into a high-δ 66 Zn HIMU source. High-δ 66 Zn signatures of HIMU basalts, therefore, demonstrate that carbonates can be transported into Earth’s deep mantle.
Sediment recycling by continental subduction indicated by B-Hf-Pb-Nd isotopes from Miocene–Quaternary lavas in the northern margin of Tibet

Abstract:Although it has been argued that sediment recycling plays an important role in the differentiation of the continental crust, boron (B) isotopic data does not support a direct input of subducted sediments into arc magmas. This raises questions about the viability of sediment recycling as a process in the differentiation of continental crust. Here, we report B isotopic data from Miocene–Quaternary lavas derived from different sources in the northern margin of Tibet. These lavas have high B contents and negative δ 11 B values close to those of continental sediments. Strongly peraluminous rhyolites have the highest B (93 to 1559 ppm) contents with negative δ 11 B (−9.7 to −17.9) values. Adakitic dacites and trachyandesites exhibit the lowest B (18 to 29 ppm) contents with markedly negative δ 11 B (−12.0 to −35.7) values whereas olivine leucitites have B (37.2 to 59.3 ppm) contents with negative δ 11 B (−8.3 to −15.6) values. These lavas also have enriched Hf-Pb-Nd isotopic compositions similar to those of sediments. This data, combined with numerical modelling and geophysical and tectonic data for Cenozoic continental subduction in the northern margin of Tibet, indicates that: (1) the strongly peraluminous rhyolites were generated by partial melting of mica-bearing continental sedimentary rocks subducted to the depth of mid-to-lower crust; (2) adakitic lavas were derived by partial melting of sediment-bearing thickened lower crust underwent dehydration and eclogites-facies metamorphism; and (3) olivine leucitites were generated by partial melting of enriched mantle metasomatized by sediment-bearing eclogite-facies crust-derived melts. Thus, at continental convergent margins, continental subduction is an important mechanism for sediment recycling and the evolution of continental crust.

Abstract:This study reports barium (Ba) isotope compositions of intact altered oceanic crust (AOC) recovered from Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Site 1256, East Pacific Rise (EPR), to investigate the behavior of Ba isotopes during both low-temperature seawater alteration and high-temperature hydrothermal alteration processes in the oceanic crust. The Ba isotope compositions of the volcanic section and sheeted dike complex have large variations and are mostly heavier than those of the fresh EPR MORB, with δ138/134Ba ranging from −0.01‰ to +0.39‰, which may be attributed to the modification of Ba isotopes by seawater and hydrothermal fluid during low-temperature and high-temperature alteration. The samples from the plutonic complex display much lighter Ba isotope compositions than the fresh EPR MORB, having δ138/134Ba values of −0.22‰ to −0.06‰, which may reflect the influence of late magmatic fluids. Because of the large Ba isotope variation in the AOC and the obvious difference in Ba isotope compositions between the AOC and the upper mantle, the recycling of the AOC could result in Ba isotope heterogeneity in the mantle and further indicate the application of Ba isotopes for tracing crustal material recycling in the Earth's mantle.

Abstract:The molybdenum (Mo) isotope system is a powerful tool for tracing recycled crustal components in volcanic rocks. Existing Mo isotope data show that intraplate basalts have highly variable Mo isotopes. However, the heterogeneity of Mo isotopes in intraplate basalts was interpreted to be inherited from recycling of different slab components, and its origin remains unclear. Here we synthesize Mo isotope and other geochemical data for global intraplate basalts, which provide insights into Mo recycling in Earth's deep mantle. Global intraplate basalts display highly variable δ 98 Mo values of −0.84‰ to 0.10‰, suggesting mantle Mo isotopic heterogeneity. Most of the basalts have low δ 98 Mo values and high Ce/Mo ratios that are similar to those of the oceanic eclogites, indicating that recycled dehydrated oceanic crustal components were involved in their mantle sources. However, some intraplate basalts have heavy Mo isotopes. This reveals that slab components at shallow depths were dragged by the downgoing slab and have carried heavy Mo isotopes into the deep mantle. Significantly, high δ 98 Mo values of these basalts are also associated with low Ce/Mo ratios, high fluid-mobile element contents, and depleted radiogenic SrNd isotopes. Given that recycled basaltic oceanic crust and sediment are generally efficiently dehydrated during subduction and sequester light Mo isotopes, subducted serpentinised lithospheric mantle is a plausible candidate to transfer heavy Mo isotopes into the deep mantle. Thus, Mo isotope systematics of intraplate basalts record complex geochemical fluxes from subducting slab to the deep mantle, in which subducted serpentinites play an important role in the Mo isotope recycling. Our study highlights the effectiveness of Mo isotopes as indicators for geochemical heterogeneity of Earth's deep mantle.

Abstract:Understanding the compositional heterogeneity of the deep mantle requires identifying the nature of recycled crustal materials in the sources of mantle-plume-related magmas. However, it is still unclear whether or not the deep mantle contains recycled carbonates from the Earth's surface. In this study, we present comprehensive data on whole-rock high-precision zinc isotopes, as well as major- and trace-element geochemistry, and Sr–Nd–Pb isotopes of basalts on Hainan Island to examine the influence of recycled materials (particularly carbonates) on the mantle source heterogeneity of the Hainan mantle plume. The basalts have highly variable δ 66 Zn values ranging from 0.21‰ to 0.42‰. These variable Zn isotopic compositions cannot be accounted for by processes such as post-magmatic alteration and crustal contamination, or by fractional crystallization and partial melting; instead, they reflect mantle heterogeneity. Comparisons of the major- and trace-element compositions (e.g., CaO and TiO 2 contents and Zn/Fe and Fe/Mn ratios), FC3MS and FCKANTMS peridotite and pyroxenite melting parameters, as well as pseudo-ternary projections of the primary Hainan basaltic magmas with experimental data suggest that the primary magmas were partial melts of silica-deficient pyroxenitic lithologies with peridotite residue. The heterogeneous geochemical and lithological compositions of the Hainan basalts indicate that recycled sedimentary carbonates and siliceous rocks were important constituents in their mantle source. Quantitative modeling reveals that the addition of 1–10% subducted sediments into the source of the Hainan basalts closely reproduces their Zn–Sr–Nd–Pb isotopic values. The source component with the heaviest Zn isotopic composition measured for the Hainan basalt samples could have contained more than 9% recycled carbonate. Our findings provide insights into the role of subducted materials to mantle heterogeneity and highlight the contribution of subducted sedimentary carbonates in the deep recycling of oceanic slabs, including—in the case of the Hainan mantle plume—recycled deep mantle (i.e., the mantle transition zone and lower mantle).

Abstract:To test the ability of Mg and Zn isotopes in discriminating between different types of mantle metasomatism and identifying deep carbon cycling, here we present a comparative study on two types of Cenozoic lavas in SE Tibet, that is, K‐rich (potassic‐ultrapotassic) lavas and Na‐rich alkali basalts. The contrasting bulk rock chemical compositions, Sr‐Nd isotopic ratios, and olivine chemistry between them suggest distinct sources in the lithospheric mantle and asthenosphere, respectively. The K‐rich lavas have mantle‐like δ26Mg, slightly lighter δ66Zn relative to global oceanic basalts, high 87Sr/86Sr, and low 143Nd/144Nd, indicating source metasomatism by recycled siliciclastic sediments. By contrast, the alkali basalts possess remarkably lighter δ26Mg and heavier δ66Zn values relative to the mantle that are typically characterized by carbonates. The coupling of high δ66Zn with high‐Zn contents and Zn/Fe ratios further suggests a pyroxenite source containing recycled Zn‐rich magnesium carbonates. This is strongly corroborated by the similarity in major elements between the alkali basalts and experimental partial melts of pyroxenite + CO2. Thus, mantle silicate and carbonate metasomatism contributed to the origin of K‐rich and Na‐rich lavas in SE Tibet, respectively. Notably, the occurrence of the alkali basalts is spatially consistent with a stagnant slab in the mantle transition zone (410–660 km), the latter of which is interpreted to represent the deeply subducted oceanic slab. These observations provide evidence for recycling of carbonates into the deep mantle, which represents a long‐term circulation of subducted carbon compared with that of arc‐trench systems and has crucial significance for global deep carbon cycling.
