Abstract:The article describes the role and place of personalized learning in the development of world scientific and pedagogical thought, paying special attention to the relevance of this approach in modern international education. Personalized education is seen as an approach that responds to the interests of scientific and pedagogical schools around the world. Followers of this concept recognize that the term itself is in the process of formation. Personalized education is considered as an approach that satisfies the interests of scientific and pedagogical schools in various countries of the world. The models described in the article assume a certain control of the student choice by the teacher, that is, each model contains a set of elements of personalized learning, but these elements are combined with elements of individualization. Among the attributes of personalization, the position of the learner as a subject stands out, which is expressed in the ability to choose certain aspects of the educational process, leading to the construction and implementation of an individual educational track. The introduction of personalized education makes it possible to develop a harmonious personality, to increase the student's independence and responsibility in the educational process, which is the basis for the prosperous development of society as a whole.

Abstract:As technology rapidly changes society, cultivating creativity in students is critical, yet traditional approaches focused solely on generating novel ideas are insufficient. This paper proposes that education should foster transformational creativity, which affects positive, enduring change. Transformational creativity combines innovation with wisdom to benefit society. After differentiating transformational creativity from harmful applications, this paper explores strategies to develop it through 1) establishing creativity-friendly classrooms, 2) incorporating holistic education, 3) integrating care, empathy, and ethics into creative projects, and 4) assessing transformational creativity via tailored rubrics and portfolios. Education can nurture generations of ethical, creative changemakers by guiding students to direct innovations toward the common good. The paper provides a framework to foster transformational creativity for building a just, sustainable future.

Abstract:The past two decades have seen the emergence of a global movement that calls for a new model of learning for the 21st century.Multiple sources have identified a variety of competencies and skills that deserve consideration,most of which are absent from current learning processes.This paper explores these skills in depth and highlights several key elements for learning in the 21st century including personalization,collaboration,communication,informal learning,productivity and content creation,etc..It also underlines the importance to the 21st century workplace of personal skills such as initiative,resilience,responsibility,risk-taking and creativity;social skills such as teamwork,networking,empathy and compassion;and learning skills such as managing,organizing,meta-cognitive skills and "failing forward".

Abstract:The requirement for “self-development” through the ceaseless acquisition of skills and credentials has long been central for young adults in China. However, due to the multiple and unpredictable demands of social institutions, many social actors also prime the cultivation of a self that does not succumb to immediate occupational and material impositions. In this article, I describe how young adults in a second-tier city pursue a model of personhood that brings together socio-economic competence and singular individuality. These individuals aspire to expand their range of experiences and their spatial mobility, thereby reifying an image of a self that transcends narrow social roles and networks. Drawing on Jean-Paul Sartre's dualistic philosophy, I analyse young adults’ attempts to realise individualised selves by destabilising their ontological ground. I argue that this phenomenon is magnified in China through widespread notions of a “moral crisis” and its supposable suppression of social actors’ agency.

Abstract:Scaling and sustaining educational innovations is a common problem in the learning sciences. Professional development resources around educational innovations that are personalized to appeal to the needs and motivations of different types of faculty offer a possible solution. The method of developing personas to represent key types of users is commonly employed in user-interface design and can be used to produce personalized resources. Personas are fictional named archetypes of users encompassing generalizations of their key characteristics and goals that emerge from interviews. This method is especially powerful because personas succinctly package information into the form of a person, who is easily understood and reasoned about. Herein we describe the creation of a set of personas focusing on the needs and motivations of physics faculty around assessment and teaching. We present the personas, a discussion of how they inform our design and how the method can be used more broadly.

Abstract:The main actor in the learning process is the learner. The concept of “learner” goes beyond the educational level. The new reality in the educational environment presents challenges for the learning process, which mainly concern the adoption of new technologies in that process. The purpose of this commentary is to try to outline the future of education, taking into account the efforts of learners, the needs of the learning process, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of providing knowledge through technology. We argue that education and technology are not two separate vague and autonomous elements that suddenly sprouted into being. Humankind shapes the development of education and contributes to the evolution of technology, its management, and application in education. Diversity in the learning needs of individuals regarding new technologies is the main discussion of this commentary, while the application of social ecology is considered as a necessary element to ensure equality in, and the sustainability of, education. Educational leadership has a key role to play in social ecology. Leadership in education must be supportive and, most importantly, facilitate the liberation of the learning process from the limited and negatively biased perception of different social values.

Abstract:With the development of artificial intelligence, personalized learning has attracted much attention as an integral part of intelligent education. China, the United States, the European Union, and others have put forward the importance of personalized learning in recent years, emphasizing the realization of the organic combination of large-scale education and personalized training. The development of a personalized learning system oriented to learners' preferences and suited to learners' needs should be accelerated. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the current situation of personalized learning and its key role in education. It discusses the research on personalized learning from multiple perspectives, combining definitions, goals, and related educational theories to provide an in-depth understanding of personalized learning from an educational perspective, analyzing the implications of different theories on personalized learning, and highlighting the potential of personalized learning to meet the needs of individuals and to enhance their abilities. Data applications and assessment indicators in personalized learning are described in detail, providing a solid data foundation and evaluation system for subsequent research. Meanwhile, we start from both student modeling and recommendation algorithms and deeply analyze the cognitive and non-cognitive perspectives and the contribution of personalized recommendations to personalized learning. Finally, we explore the challenges and future trajectories of personalized learning. This review provides a multidimensional analysis of personalized learning through a more comprehensive study, providing academics and practitioners with cutting-edge explorations to promote continuous progress in the field of personalized learning.

Abstract:Despite intense efforts, contemporary educational systems are not enabling individuals to function optimally in modern society. The main reason is that reformers are trying to improve systems that are not designed to take advantage of the centuries of history of the development of today's societies. Nor do they recognize the implications of the millions of years of history of life on earth in which humans are the latest edition of learning organisms. The contemporary educational paradigm of "education for all" is based on a 17th century model of "printing minds" for passing on static knowledge. This characterizes most of K-12 education. In contrast, 21st Century education demands a new paradigm, which we call Ergonomic Education. This is an education system that is designed to fit the students of any age instead of forcing the students to fit the education system. It takes into account in a fundamental way what students want to learn -- the concept "wanting to learn" refers to the innate ability and desire to learn that is characteristic of humans. The Ergonomic Education paradigm shifts to education based on coaching students as human beings who are hungry for productive learning throughout their lives from their very earliest days.

Abstract:This paper is a caution to the overemphasis on STEM in schools. Human talents and interests are extremely diverse for all sorts of reasons (nature via nurture). However, not all talents and skills have equal utility value in all societies. Thus, societies tend to suppress some and support others (via education or social policies). STEM represents the U.S. policy to support a narrow set of skills and talents/interests and suppress non-STEM skills. As the human society enters a different time, we have witnessed the rising value of other talents/skills. This paper brings evidence to show how traditionally undervalued talents/interests (arts, music, entertainment, global competency—translators/interpreters, interpersonal/intrapersonal, etc.) have gained value as human beings acquire more disposal income and leisure time to be able to consume psychological and spiritual products. The paper also discusses the potential danger of an excessive focus on STEM in education.

A Network Science Perspective to Personalized Learning

Abstract:The modern educational ecosystem is not one-size fits all. Scholars are accustomed to personalization in their everyday life and expect the same from education systems. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic placed us all in an acute teaching and learning laboratory experimentation which now creates expectations of self-paced learning and interactions with focused educational materials. Consequently, we examine how learning objectives can be achieved through a learning platform that offers content choices and multiple modalities of engagement to support self-paced learning, and propose an approach to personalized education based on network science. This framework brings the attention to learning experiences, rather than teaching experiences, by providing the learner engagement and content choices supported by a network of knowledge, based on and driven by individual skills and goals. We conclude with a discussion of a prototype of such a learning platform, called CHUNK Learning.

Abstract:This paper, proposes practical teaching recommendations based on the integration of blended teaching and outcome-oriented education through a case study. Through an in-depth exploration of projects such as creating individual resumes, the study reveals that the blended teaching model, while providing a personalized learning experience, complements the philosophy of outcome-oriented education. Utilizing online learning platforms to stimulate students’ interests in self-directed learning and continuously optimizing teaching methods through a comprehensive performance assessment and practical skill development provide students with a more practical and holistic learning experience. This research offers valuable insights and guidance for future educational practices, presenting actionable teaching approaches for schools and educational institutions.

Abstract:In the Internet age, the proliferation of multimedia computer technology (MCT) brings unprecedented opportunities to English teaching in colleges. This paper firstly carries out a questionnaire survey on the current status of personalized teaching of college English, and summed up the main problems with the current teaching mode. On this basis, the authors developed an MCT-based personalized English teaching design, with the aid of information technology (IT) and online teaching platform. To verify its effect, the proposed design was tested through contrastive experiment. The results show that the MCT-based personalized English teaching design could improve the interests and performance of English learning, and cultivate a good learning habit. In summary, this paper explores the personalized teaching of college English from both theoretical and practical angles, laying a good basis for high-quality English teaching and personalized development of students.

Abstract:How can a new generation of students be equipped to take up positions of responsibility in a dynamic global environment, serving as leaders and citizens who will further the good of societies around the world? As the institutions responsible for educating the next generation of citizens and leaders at a formative time in their intellectual and personal development, universities have an important role to play in shaping those who will shape society. While many universities emphasize their desire to raise up future leaders for our challenging times, programmes that actively seek to help students develop qualities of character required for responsible leadership are rare. This article discusses the importance of character in leadership education and draws on a case study programme at the University of Hong Kong, which made use of a creative combination of in-person and online learning to help students grow in their intellectual understanding of leadership as well as in the self-knowledge and virtues of character required to enact responsible leadership in their own lives. The article describes the pedagogical methodology that was employed and presents the results of an exploratory, quasi-experimental longitudinal study of the programme's impact, which was designed to establish proof of concept. The analysis of qualitative data supports the potential of such programmes to make a positive contribution to students' intellectual understanding of leadership as well as their leadership identity and ethical formation1.

Abstract:Positive education is defined as education for both traditional skills and for happiness. The high prevalence worldwide of depression among young people, the small rise in life satisfaction, and the synergy between learning and positive emotion all argue that the skills for happiness should be taught in school. There is substantial evidence from well controlled studies that skills that increase resilience, positive emotion, engagement and meaning can be taught to schoolchildren. We present the story of teaching these skills to an entire school—Geelong Grammar School—in Australia, and we speculate that positive education will form the basis of a ‘new prosperity’, a politics that values both wealth and well‐being.

Abstract:In this chapter, Bernard Yeung raises a controversial issue: that the current stage of industrial and technological revolution creates economic anxiety and doubts on university education’s value. Universities’ response should be sticking to the basics: advance research and train students to be life-long learners. In this context, university and educational institutions need to emphasize principle, data, technology, and human literacy. Yeung also strongly supports the need to emphasize the inclination to ask meaningful questions, to practice critical thinking, and to inculcate in students a sense of responsibility to do good in society.

Abstract:In the search for more effective education, there is a widespread effort to develop better approaches to personalize student education. Unassisted, educators often do not have time or resources to personally support every student in a given classroom. Motivated by this issue, and by recent advancements in artificial intelligence, this paper presents a general-purpose framework for personalized student support, applicable to any virtual educational system such as a serious game or an intelligent tutoring system. To fit any educational situation, we apply ontologies for their semantic organization, combining them with data collection considerations and multi-agent reinforcement learning. The result is a modular system that can be adapted to any virtual educational software to provide useful personalized assistance to students.
