Abstract:Speech imagery has recently been introduced as an independent mental strategy in brain-computer interface (BCI). In these systems, the statistical distribution of the data could differ across subjects as well as across sessions for an individual subject. The issue of feature selection for a long time has been addressed in order to enhance the discriminability in features in EEG signal processing as well as the reduction in complexity with all its aspects. Due to biological inspirations regarding how the brain works, CSP-related works have been rooted as special bases among researchers. A simple and effective approach has been proposed to prevent outlier effects and also handle robustness in a spatial filter specification. To attain that, two contributions have been focused on in this chapter. The first is the proposal of a novel approach to deal with mining and extracting suitable spatial filters from large numbers of epochs or sessions while maintaining robustness. And the second is the derivation of a consistent approach for more efficient optimization of the proposed method. The evaluation phase has proved that this novel method based on its context can even outperform previous designs of CSP and other kinds of spatial filters. The performance of the proposed weighted common spatial pattern is evaluated using the vowel speech imagery dataset of 14 healthy subjects, which involves the imagination of four vowels (/æ/, /e/, /a/, and /u/). In the present work, features are classified using an adaptive network-based fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), while for optimizing network weights and determining the optimal values of their parameters, instead of gradient methods, the Krill Herd (KH) heuristic optimization method has been used. The KH algorithm is one of the most recent, attractive, and promising heuristic optimization techniques. Finally, this method has been compared with several other metaheuristic and intelligent methods for classifying four different classes of speech imagery tasks. The results show that the classification based on the features obtained from WgtCSP and the optimization of the ANFIS classifier with KH algorithm leads to an improvement of at least 15% in the results. The validity of this conclusion was assessed by various statistical methods.
