Abstract:The degradation of aqueous Rhodamine B (RhB) was examined using a dual-channel spark switch module designed to regulate the steepness of pulsed high voltage with microsecond rise time. Depending on the energy per pulse, a spark along the water surface (SPWS) or streamer along the water surface (STWS) was formed. STWS was found to have a better degradation effect and energy efficiency toward RhB than SPWS at the same power; however, addition of H2O2 amounts resulted in increased degradation, the effect being more pronounced using SPWS. The initial concentration of RhB also appeared to influence the rate constant of the degradation reaction. Furthermore, TiO2 films doped with Fe, Mn, and Ce were found to enhance the degradation performance of plasma. A possible reaction mechanism of plasma formation along the water surface was concluded by determination of the main inorganic products in the liquid and gas phases.

Abstract:In this manuscript, we have reported a strategy for the synthesis and fine control of the crystal size and morphology of a novel mesoporous faujasite type zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanocrystals in water solution. The synthesized materials are mesoporous faujasite type, highly crystalline, nanometer-sized, and with a high surface area. The materials have been characterized using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron micrograph (TEM), BET-Surface area, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic (FT-IR) analysis. The distribution of nanoparticles is observed through DLS spectroscopy. The thermogravimetry/differential thermal analysis reveals that the material is stable even up to 600 °C. Tetrahedral coordination and 4+ oxidation state of Zinc is found through UV-visible and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies. The NaBH4 assisted rhodamine B degradation at room temperature shows excellent catalytic activity (∼ 95 %) in a short duration (10 min.). A plausible mechanism of degradation on its catalytic activity is also proposed.

Abstract:Nano-sized ZnO powder was introduced to act as the sonocatalyst after the treatment of high-temperature activation, and the ultrasound of low power was used as an irradiation source to induce nano-sized ZnO powder performing sonocatalytic degradation of acid red B and rhodamine B. At the same time, the effects of operational parameters such as solution pH value, initial concentration of dyestuff and addition amount of nano-sized ZnO powder have been examined in this paper. We found that the degradation ratios of acid red B and rhodamine B in the presence of nano-sized ZnO powder were much higher than that with only ultrasonic irradiation. However, the degradation ratio of acid red B was about two times higher than that of rhodamine B for the initial concentration of 10.0mg/L, addition amount of 1.0g/L nano-sized ZnO powder, solution acidity of pH 7.0 and 60min irradiation experimental condition. The difference of the degradation ratios can be illustrated by the difference of chemical forms of acid red B and rhodamine B in aqueous solution and the surface properties of nano-sized ZnO particles. In addition, the researches on the kinetics of sonocatalytic reactions of acid red B and rhodamine B have also been performed and found to the follow pseudo first-order kinetics. All the experiments indicated that the sonocatalytic method in the presence of nano-sized ZnO powder was an advisable choice for the treatments of non- or low-transparent organic wastewaters in future.
Transition-state defect structure: A new strategy for TiO2-based porous materials to enhance photodegradation of pollutants

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to investigate the derived structure and properties of Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 (ZIF-8), and the effect of residual structural on the catalytic properties after loading with Titanium Dioxide (TiO2). For this purpose, we ingeniously prepare C-ZIF-8@TiO2 with a transition-state defect structure and apply it for efficiently degrading organic dye wastewater represented by Rhodamine B (Rh-B). Thanks to the transition-state defect structure loaded with TiO2 and ZIF-8 self-derived Carbon (C) and Zinc Oxide (ZnO), the catalytic performance of C-ZIF-8@TiO2 is superior to that of TiO2 and normal TiO2/ZIF-8 composites, and it is effective in degrading a variety of antibiotics and dyes. The related characterization also shows good photovoltaic properties and long-term durability for C-ZIF-8@TiO2. The mechanism on free radical action is elucidated and the possible degradation pathway for Rh-B is speculated. Therefore, C-ZIF-8@TiO2 provides a new strategy for the degradation of organic pollutants in water bodies.

Abstract:This paper presents a study on the synthesis of iron doped ZIF-8 with different molar ratio of Zn/Fe (Fe-ZIF-8) and sunlight driven photocatalytic activity of obtained materials. The materials were characteristic of X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms, diffusive reflectance UV–Vis (DR-UV–Vis) and atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). The results showed that Fe(II) as iron source could be directly introduced into ZIF-8 to form Fe-ZIF-8. Depending on the amount of iron(II) introduced, the Fe(II) or both Fe(II) and Fe(III) may exist in ZIF-8. Fe-ZIF-8 was selected as photocatalyst to decompose Remazol deep black B (RDB), a model of dye contaminant, under sunlight illumination. Undoped ZIF-8 seems not to catalyze for degradation of RDB while Fe-ZIF-8 exhibited sunlight-driven photocatalytic degradation of RDB. The kinetics of photocatalytic reaction were also addressed. This study suggests iron doped zeolite-imidazole framework Fe-ZIF-8 to be promising catalyst for the heterogeneous photo-catalytic dye degradation technique in visible region.

Efficient rhodamine B dye photocatalytic degradation in aqueous media using novel ZnO nanomaterials co-doped with Ce and Dy

Abstract:Water pollution caused by dyes and industrial wastewater poses a significant threat to ecosystems. The purification of such pollutants presents a major challenge. Photocatalysis based on semiconductor materials is a potential wastewater treatment process due to its safety and cost-effectiveness. In the present work, Zn1-2xCexDyxO (x = 0.01-0.05) semiconductors were prepared by the sol-gel auto-ignition method. The samples are denoted CDZO1, CDZO3, and CDZO5 for x = 0.01-0.05, respectively. The X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy results revealed the formation of ZnO hexagonal phase wurtzite structure for all synthesized compositions. Different structural properties were determined. It was found that the lattice parameters and the unit cell volume increased, while the crystallite size diminished as x varied from 0.01 to 0.05. Transmission electron microscopy observations confirmed the formation of nanoparticles with the desired chemical compositions. The specific surface area (SSA) values are found to be 39.95 m2/g, 48.62 m2/g, and 51.36 m2/g for CDZO1, CDZO5, and CDZO5 samples, respectively. The reflectance spectra were recorded to examine the optical properties of the different nanoparticles. The values of the optical band gap were 3.221, 3.225, and 3.239 eV for CDZO1, CDZO3, and CDZO5 samples, respectively. In addition, the photocatalytic performance towards RhB dye degradation for the different samples was assessed. It was established that the CDZO3 sample with a moderate SSA value exhibited the superior photocatalytic performance among the other as-prepared samples wherein the percentage of degradation efficiency, and kinetic constant rate attained their maximum values of 98.22 % and 0.0521 min-1, respectively within 75 min. As per the obtained findings, it is evident that the Zn1-2xCexDyxO photocatalyst has prominent potential for use in the degradation of dyes and offers a useful route for impeding the recombination of electron-hole pairs of zinc oxide material.

Abstract:Zeolite imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are a novel kind of zeolite materials with regular porous network structures, belonging to mental-organic frameworks (MOFs). Thanks to their high porosity and large specific surface area, ZIFs could have potential applications in the field of photocatalysis. In this paper, visible light responsive photocatalyst of ZIF-67 was synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method under a mild condition. We explored three organic dyes in aqueous solutions were degraded under visible light irradiation. And corresponding photocatalytic performances of ZIF-67 with controllable synthetic conditions were evaluated systematically. It was found that ZIF-67(9 h) had the highest degradation efficiency. Besides, the ZIF-67(9 h) were heated in Ar can maintain their crystal structure and microporous form, but exposed more sites to improve photocatalytic activity with partial bond breakage. More than 75% methyl orange (MO), 85% methyl blue (MB) and 54% Rhodamine B (RhB) can be degraded with a 0.5 g L−1 ZIF-67(9 h)(Ar) under visible light irradiation. Moreover, the ZIF-67(9 h)(Ar) demonstrates a strong pH changing tolerance in both acid and alkaline aqueous solutions, the degradations can be well performed in a wide pH range from 3.0 to 11.0.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the preparation of Li-doped ZnO nanostructures through combustion and report on their structural, morphological, optical, and electrocatalysis properties. X-ray diffraction analyses show that the samples have a structure crystallized into the usual hexagonal wurtzite ZnO structure according to the P63mc space group. The scanning electron microscope images conceal all samples' nanosphere bundles and aggregates. The reflectance spectra analysis showed that the direct bandgap values varied from 3.273 eV (for pure ZnO, i.e., ZnL1) to 3.256 eV (for high Li-doped ZnO). The measured capacitance concerning frequency has estimated the variation of dielectric constant, dielectric loss, and AC conductivity against AC electric field frequency. The dielectric constant variations and AC conductivity are analyzed and discussed by well-known models such as Koop's phenomenological theory and Jonscher's law. The Raman spectra have been recorded and examined for the prepared samples. Rhodamine B was electro-catalytically degraded in all prepared samples, with the fastest time for ZnL5 being 3 min.

Improved Photocatalytic Performance for Rhodamine B Degradation by Porous Zn2SnO4 Prepared with Carbon Black as a Pore-Forming Agent

Abstract:Hydrothermal synthesis followed by a calcination step was used to prepare porous Zn2SnO4 powders using carbon black as a pore-forming agent. The porous Zn2SnO4 was used as a photocatalyst to degrade the Rhodamine B dye from aqueous solution under UV artificial light. X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance were used to characterize the material. The addition of pore-forming agent (carbon black) did not change the crystalline structure of Zn2SnO4 phase. In addition, increasing the surface area and porosity as well as decreasing the band-gap energy was observed. The combination of these characteristics favored the photodegradation of Rhodamine B, reaching 96% of dye degradation at 15 min of reaction time. In addition, the photocatalyst was active after six cycles of reuse. Therefore, the produced material in this work showed to be a potential photocatalyst to remove Rhodamine B dye from aqueous solution.

Sonophotocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B dye using Zr doped ZnO nanoparticles: Kinetic study and toxicity assessment

Abstract:This study investigates sonophotocatalysis for the oxidation of Rhodamine B (RhB) dye using Zr doped ZnO nanoparticles. The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by scanning electron microscope, Fourier-transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, Brunauer Emmett-Teller, thermogravimetric analysis, and photoluminescence. The hybrid sonophotocatalysis system achieved 98.73 ± 1.25% degradation of RhB under the conditions: RhB dye concentration = 10 ppm, 4 wt% of Zr doped ZnO = 0.1 g, reaction temperature = 30 °C, time = 60 min, pH = 7. A kinetic model was developed to predict the efficiency of RhB degradation through intrinsic elementary chemical reactions. The high coefficient of determination (R 2 = 0.96) indicates the model's prediction accuracy in describing the degradation kinetics of RhB within sonophotocatalysis system. The electrical energy per order ( E EO ) analysis demonstrated that US + UVC + 4 wt% of Zr doped ZnO significantly reduced E EO (1055 kWh m −3 order −1 ). The synergy index for this combination was approximately 1.60, demonstrating a significant synergistic effect. Density Functional Theory (DFT) studies were utilized to propose the most probable degradation pathway, identifying reactive sites and potential byproducts. The simulations revealed the central carbon atom (1C site) as highly susceptible to radical attacks, indicating potential decolorization pathways such as N-de-ethylation, chromophore cleavage, and ring opening. Toxicity assessments of both the parent dye and its intermediates were conducted using ECOSAR (Ecological Structure Activity Relationship) to evaluate their ecological impacts. The combination of experimental results and kinetic modeling and simulations offers a deep understanding of RhB degradation complexities, driving advancements in sustainable water treatment technologies.

Abstract:Abstract In this article, Bi2O3@Zn-MOF hybrid nanomaterials were synthesized by supporting Zn-based metal–organic framework (Zn-MOF) through the hydrothermal method. X-ray diffractometer, Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray, N2 physisorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and UV-Vis were used to characterize the physical and chemical properties of Bi2O3@Zn-MOF nanomaterials. The photocatalytic activity of the as-prepared hybrid has been studied over the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB). A catalytic activity of 97.2% was achieved using Bi2O3@Zn-MOF nanocomposite with the loading of 0.18 g Bi2O3, after 90 min of exposure to visible light irradiation, and the high photocatalytic performance was mainly associated with the nanorod structures, larger pore size, and broaden visible light absorption region due to the synergistic effect of the constituting materials. Furthermore, the Bi2O3@Zn-MOF nanocomposite can be reused three times and the degradation rate of RhB was maintained at 77.9%. Thus, the Bi2O3@Zn-MOF nanocomposite can act as a potential photocatalyst for the photodegradation of organic dyes in environmental applications.

Abstract:In this work, hybridization of nonmetal nitrogen-doped carbon dots (NCQDs) with ZnO nanorods (NRs) is utilized towards better photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. The structural characterization is confirmed by XRD, XPS, FTIR and HRTEM measurements, while, optical properties have been investigated using UV–visible absorbance spectroscopy and photoluminescence study. The dye degradation using ZnO NR is recorded as ~69%, while the performance of ZnO/NCQD climbs up to ~90%, after nine minutes of UV irradiation. Furthermore, the reusability test suggests better stability of ZnO/NCQD than bare ZnO under photocorrosion. The cyclic voltammetry study confirms that the photoinduced electron-hole pairs originate from the heterojunction established between the interfaces of NCQD and ZnO. An insight on the photocatalytic excellence of ZnO/NCQD system is drawn from the density functional theory study. This indicates that appropriate band alignment of the heterostructure constituents is the key factor in this experimental attempt towards environment remedy.

Abstract:The photocatalyst 3 N 4 nanohybrids were synthesized successfully by a facile in situ co-precipitation method. It is found that the layered nanosheet degradation efficiency of Rhodamine B reached 98.07% in 90 min under visible light irradiation by photocatalysis. In addition, photo-electrochemical measurements demonstrated that the structure of 5 % 3 N 4 could enhance the separation efficiency and transfer of photogenerated carriers. This study provides a new idea for the development of novel photocatalysts for the high-efficiency and active degradation of wastewater.

Abstract:In this work, it is proposed an environmental friendly sonophotocatalytic approach to efficiently treat polluted waters from industrial dyes exploiting ZnO micro- and nano-materials. For the first time, we deeply investigated the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) under ultrasound stimulation of different ZnO structures by Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (EPR). Indeed, five zinc oxide (ZnO) micro- and nano-structures, i.e. Desert Roses (DRs), Multipods (MPs), Microwires (MWs), Nanoparticles (NPs) and Nanowires (NWs), were studied for the Rhodamine B (RhB) sonodegradation under ultrasonic irradiation. The DRs microparticles demonstrated the best sonocatalytic performance (100% degradation of RhB in 180 min) and the highest OH· radicals generation under ultrasonic irradiation. Strikingly, the coupling of ultrasound and sun-light irradiation in a sonophotodegradation approach led to 100% degradation efficiency, i.e. color reduction, of RhB in just 10 min, revealing a great positive synergy between the photocatalytic and sonocatalytic mechanisms. The RhB sonophotocatalytic degradation was also evaluated at different initial dye concentrations and with the presence of anions in solution. It was demonstrated a good stability over repeated cycles of dye treatment, which probe the applicability of this technique with industrial effluents. In conclusion, sonophotocatalytic degradation synergizing sunlight and ultrasound in the presence of DRs microparticles shows a great potential and a starting point to investigate further the efficient treatment of organic dyes in wastewater.

Abstract:C-doped ZnO particles have been successfully prepared by the calcination using microwave hydrothermally prepared metal–organic framework-5 (MOF-5) as the precursor. MOF-5 was turned into C-doped ZnO through calcination at 500 °C, and its cubic shape was well-maintained. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic studies confirmed the C-doping in the ZnO. The as-prepared C-doped ZnO demonstrated a Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation efficiency of 98% in 2 h under an solar-simulated light irradiation, much higher than that of C-doped ZnO derived from MOF-5 synthesized by the ordinary hydrothermal method. Abstract:Three novel metal organic frameworks (MOFs) including {[Zn 3 (nip) 3 (TPPA) 3 ]·3 DMF·H 2 O} n ( 1 ), [Co(NH 2 -bdc)(TPPA)(H 2 O)] n ( 2 ) and [Cd 2 (NH 2 -bdc) 2 (TPPA) 2 ] n ( 3 ) (TPPA = tri(4-pyridylphenyl)amine, H 2 -nip = 5-Nitroisophthalic acid, NH 2 -bdc = 2-Aminoterephthalic acid) were successfully prepared under hydrothermal conditions. X-ray single crystal analyses revealed that MOF 1 and MOF 3 possess 3D architecture while MOF 2 exhibits a 2D new framework. Impressively, all of them can function as a highly photocatalyst for degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) dye under low-energy irradiation of a 150 W Xenon lamp. Moreover, the photocatalytic performance is significantly improved after the addition of H 2 O 2 , which could be attributed to their high efficiencies in generating OH and O 2 − radicals. In addition, MOFs 1–3 showed very stable activity in the degradation of RhB, and showed no significant loss of activity after three consecutive uses.

Abstract:Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts with excellent redox capability show great potential in the field of environmental remediation. In this research, ZIF-67 and BiOCl were used to construct metal–organic framework (MOF)-based heterostructures, which effectively achieved 97.4% rhodamine B (RhB) degradation and 78.2% tetracycline (TC) degradation under visible light irradiation. The cyclic experiments displayed that 15% ZIF-67/BiOCl remained structurally stable after 4 cycles. Reactive species trapping demonstrates that 1O2 and ·O2 – were mainly responsible for RhB and TC degradation, which were inoculated with EPR results. This work also reveals the degradation path and mechanism of heterojunction, which provides insight into the synthesis of superior photocatalysts for environmental remediation.

Abstract:Industrial dye contamination in wastewater poses significant environmental challenges, necessitating the development of efficient photocatalysts for degradation. In this work, we investigate the In doping effect in the photocatalytic activity of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles for effective RhB degradation. Indium-doped ZnO nanoparticles were synthesized via sol–gel method and x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed a wurtzite hexagonal structure, with the crystallite size being varying from 65 nm to 53 nm with the introduction of In content. XPS measurements on the 3% In-doped ZnO sample revealed distinct core level spectra for In 3d, Zn 2p, and O 1s regions, confirming the presence of indium, zinc, and oxygen. Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis revealed increased surface area and pore size, with specific surface areas escalating from 0.9 m2/g for pure ZnO to 10.1 m2/g for 3% indium-doped ZnO. Photocatalytic experiments exhibited significant RhB degradation, with degradation efficiencies reaching 93% for 3% indium-doped ZnO under visible light irradiation due to the effect of the presence of In, which causing light absorption enhancement, narrow the band gap and improve charge carrier separation. These findings underscore the potential of indium-doped ZnO nanoparticles as efficient and sustainable photocatalysts for wastewater treatment, offering a promising avenue to address environmental challenges associated with industrial dye-contaminated effluents.

Abstract:A series of C-doped ZnO/TiO2 composites with various molar ratios of ZnO to TiO2 were synthesized by one-step controllable pyrolysis of Zn/Ti bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (Zn/Ti-MOF). The Zn/Ti-MOF was prepared using a facile microwave hydrothermal method. Electron microscopic analysis proved that the composites presented regularity cubic morphology with an edge length of about 1 μm and the C atoms were successfully doped into Zn O/TiO2 composites. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurement results confirmed the C-doping in the ZnO/TiO2. Comparative experimental studies showed that 2% ZnO/TiO2 composites prepared with the calcination temperature of 600℃ displayed the best photocatalytic degradation efficiency (94%) of RhB under the simulated sunlight irradiation. Cyclical experiment indicated the high stability and reusability of 2% ZnO/TiO2 composites. Electron spin resonance (ESR) and trapping experiments illustrated that the produced •O2- served as the main active species for the efficient RhB removal. This work provides an efficient way for preparing C-doped bimetal oxides composites, which would have an important application prospect in the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants in environmental water.
