Abstract:Background The fact that patients with degenerative arthritis, one of symptoms caused by domestic chores, account for 10 ~ 15% of the total population proves the great physical burden of housework. Therefore, this researcher is to contribute to reducing the burden of housework ultimately by enhancing the accessibility of general users through the design study to improve the usability of the wet-cloth vacuum cleaner to replace the conventional wet-cloth cleaning. Methods To find an improvement plan for increasing usability of a water vacuum cleaner, this study asks test participants to use a water vacuum cleaner for cleaning. A series of their work are captured in a video. The main captured scenes are analyzed with the ergonomic analysis tool 'REBA'. With the use of the analyzed data, an improved design for reducing physical workload is suggested. Result First, a water tank is not built in, but replaceable. Second, a charging battery is built in for cordless cleaning. Thirdly, a handle and the main body stand up when a user takes a rest or supplies water, in order to make follow-up work smooth. Fourthly, a motor is built in the main body in order to reduce physical workload at work. In addition, a height is adjustable so that the cleaner can respond to a user's physical condition. Fifthly, a handle can be rotated at 180° left and right in order to respond to a user's move flexibly. Conclusion If the design study to reduce the above-mentioned physical load leads to the overall housekeeping tools as well as the wet-cloth vacuum cleaner, it can contribute to reducing the burden of housework.
